    I've grown to appreciate Meshuggah as not just masters of heavy, but as pioneers in poly-rhythmic grooving. Honestly, they play some of the most complicated rhythms this side of Indian or Persian music, yet almost always manage to make it sound groovy as hell while simultaneously heavy as a black hole. They are often credited with inspiring the "djent" genre: essentially bands trying to imitate Meshuggah's sound & complicated rhythm patterns.
    P.S. If you're up a slower Meshuggah groove, try "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion"

    Just the fact that you can appreciate and even enjoy this sound of music puts you firmly in the midst of being a metalhead. Hell.. not even a majority of metalheads (well a majority of them from the 70's and 80's) can fully appreciate and enjoy this style of metal. It is an acquired taste for those of us from back then. Newer metalheads tend to be of two flavors.. Nu Metal metalheads (mostly the type of metal you would hear on a college radio station) and death metal metalheads.. those who like bands like Meshuggah or more extreme types of death metal. A third kind of metalhead is emerging in the current area.. those who enjoy progressive metal.. bands such as Gojira and Jinjer... which take elemets from multiple genres of metal and combine them into a more universal modern metal sound.
    It is a good thing to have a diverse taste in music regardless.
    Too many bands for me to actually make a suggestion. I will just happily enjoy the ride with you. ;)

    • @thawolf5921
      @thawolf5921 4 года назад +6

      Isnt' it sad that metalheads can hate Meshuggah? I think the problem is the evolving time signatures. People are so accustomed to 4/4 and 1/2 time that they don't enjoy the change ups on this level.

    • @uoabigaillevey
      @uoabigaillevey 4 года назад +2

      @@thawolf5921 It's not just that. Many of the 70's and 80's metalheads cannot really get into the whole harsh vocals that permeates metal nowadays. I was on the fence about them for a long time.. having been into the band 'Possessed' back in the late 80's. Granted... Possessed vocals are not quite as gutteral but they are close. It was through watching reactions to Bleed that I began to fully appreciate the vocal style more. Between that and Devin Townsend then Gojira I now have a much better appreciation of the vocal style. I even bought Obzen for my mp3 player to listen to on occasion while at work. That alone being proof positive that reaction videos can and do sell albums for the artists being reacted to. (Hint to any record labels that read this post.. let the reactors... react!)

    • @thawolf5921
      @thawolf5921 4 года назад

      @@uoabigaillevey I can definitely see that as well. I guess I tune them out so well it doesn't bother me too much anymore. Some of my friends that are all about Black Metal only really hate that they change up so often or that it's difficult to headbang. I'm glad you enjoy them now bud.

      Old Metal Head here. In my 50’s. For me it started with Metallica in 1984. There wasn’t a lot to pick from back then. I found some others: great, good, and a lot of crap. I still like old school but I like the unique time signatures as well. JinJer is my current favorite. I just can’t get into the constant growels. I like the tone of Meshuggah’s vocalist as far as growels go but growels are limiting. Having said that, Tatianna from JinJer seems to be more expressive and understandable with her growels in addition to having beautiful cleans. This diversity is what attracts me. Musically what stands out to me the most are guitar and vocals as opposed to drums and bass. Meshuggah is bad ass but I couldn’t enjoy listening to those vocals for extended periods. I often get the same opinions from others when I try to get them to listen to Fates Warning from the John Arch era. One thing for sure, it’s nice to have diversity.

    Meshuggah is distinctively Meshuggah. Few bands can inflect such uniqueness to their style and sound to stand alone.
    So much of music is inspired by other music. You can trace the majority of bands/musicians back to who they liked and listened to, and who influenced what they played. Nothing is like Meshuggah. They are the starting point, where bands have taken their influences from - affecting so many, it effectively created an entire metal sub-genre: "Djent". Not everyone's cup of tea - but a rare and unique leaf for those who do enjoy it.

  • @jimbodavis1944
    @jimbodavis1944 4 года назад +1

    Meshuggah is my second favorite band of all-time (PANTERA is number one and Faith No More is number three). If you listen to this song again - or just about ANY Meshuggah song - you’ll notice the snare drum landing in at least three different spots in the guitar groove/riff even though the same part is looping over and over. The reason for this is because the drummer is phrasing a 4/4 snare groove into a different time he’s playing at the same time, which is likely matching the rhythm guitar. So, the snare creates that driving feel throughout the song while the other timing he’s matching creates that power and intensity. The sophistication of this band, but - especially - the drummer, can’t be overstated.

If I was able to make a suggestion for 'essential' heavy music, I think it would have to be Motorhead. Seminal British band with a 40 year history, led by the late Lemmy Kilmister. As for songs, 'Ace of Spades' is the early anthem, and 'In the Name of Tragedy' is a gem from their later career. Keep up the good work!

    If you want to experience meshuggah in a little bit different way and try to understand their music a bit more deeply, think of them as the world's heaviest jazz band. It's their time signatures and the way they overlap and intertwine the timing of the individual instruments that in my opinion, truly differentiates them from other bands.

    I have suggestion for you: A band called Space of Variations from Ukraine. I saw them live warming up for Jinjer last year and they are fantastic. Not well known but I have a feeling they will be. I suggest either Tibet or Razorblade 🤘😛

    Meshuggah are the great ambassadors of extreme metal. People who normally have no interest in this type of music will listen to their stuff and be blown away by their playful inventiveness and impeccable musicianship. Sometimes it seems people with a jazz, hip hop or funk background, or similar, have an easier time getting into them than old school metal heads.

    I love this song because of it’s almost primitive groove, and I think other people who don’t like metal but are open minded can feel it too

    Future Breed Machine is a must-listen. The beginning is pure insanity, the riffs are al great, and the middle is a fantastic breather that has this wonderful build into one of the most neck-snapping transitions I’ve heard from them.

    Love the positive nature of your reactions. You don't come out and say I'm going to hate this. You also do your research and have the lyrics. Some people I can't watch because thier reactions are already biased and uninformed. And they are introduced to the wrong songs by that band. I don't want to see the same song being reacted to by everyone. I mean God's of rapture anyone.

    Always glad to see a new upload from you. I'd like to request "Heartless Scat" by Ningen-Isu. These guys have been toiling away for a long time and have only recently started to get some recognition. And while I'm on the subject of Japanese music, "Don't Light My Fire" by Otoboke Beaver would be a fun reaction to see. Not many people have reacted to their music, but it's an experience for sure.

    Have you done something of Magnum yet? They're the most underrated British rock band and still playing after 50 years. Magnums' style goes from soft ballads like "The last dance" and "It must have been love" (great video but look it with the 80's eyes) to rock like "When we were younger" to metal stuf and all is great. "Midnight" / "Brand new morning" / "On a storyteller's night" are great too. You can here Roger from Queen singing on "When the world comes down" he produced the album "Vigilante". Wanna have some fun? take a look at The Firm - "Star trekkin' " (not Magnum related)

    Jamel, if you like this sound can you do Converge : No Heroes then please ?
    Really curious to know what you think of those guys and no worries if you can't make out the exact lyrics even with them on a second screen, their singer is known for trying to use his voice like an instrument and sounds different every album but still beyond awesome. (imho ofc)
    Regardless Stay safe and keep up the awesome.
