The only full length album reaction video on the internet - this one’s for the die hards. Enjoy 😉
You legend
I have 2 full length album reviews that are public ya know :P
@@ptbempire But not of Catch 33 😉
You are now ready for the Sol Niger Within 3.33 Album. Some of us were not so lucky but still ended up loving Meshuggah...
My opinion, the 2nd half of this album is thousand times more interesting than the first half. Some of their best riffs peppered throughout.
"one syllable...one vowel...A[unskippable ad plays]AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH"
I've never been so musically blue balled in my life.
That part 39:06 was funny you ask'em to do it, then comes the AAAAH. Your face was priceless.

Love this album. Had the 33 shirt on a day at Yellowstone years ago, and when i was to pay for some snacks at the General store at Mammoth hot springs, the lady behind the counter started laughing at me. Turned out she was jewish, and since meshuggah means crazy/insane in yiddish it made sense.. Anyways, lovely lady.
Off we went to check some geysers out and then a big guy yelled behind me. He saw the Catch 33 print on my back, so there i was talking Meshuggah again :D
Just getting started on the watch/listen, but kudos my man you finally did it! Love this album
entrapment is up there with some of the sickest meshuggah of all time
28:40 so good hahaha i think that all the time
This was an absolute treat haha :D

WHAT A FUCKING LEGEND!!!! Dude literally is the first serious reaction channel to take on this titan
We do it all baby
Right!? I constantly look for reaction channels that react to entire albums or songs from artists that no one reacts to. Or sometimes only their big singles are reacted to. Everyone reacts to Bleed. It's dope to see this happen. Thank you!
This album is everything. It will teach you to be patient when listening as much as it will punch you in the face. It will make you trance out just as much as it will make you anxious. Top 3 album of all time for me.
I'm curious about the other two? ;)
@@synhet84 reign in blood and dark side of the moon.
The last grouping of tracks (from Shed onwards) is like an unstoppable, relentless tornado destroying everything in it’s path.
Meshuggah is straight up guitar trance music. I think their approach to minimalism really solidifies this notion. I don't listen to them as if they were a metal band. Pretentiousness aside, feels goodman™
Yes, exactly. This album has taught me patience and unbelivable restraint. Also gives me a sense of brooding anxiety that is ultimately relieved during certian parts of the tracks.

This is like the "Dark side of the moon" album of metal. A masterwork. The pacing, the lyrics and theme, it never gets old.
Perfectly said! I love both albums and I definitely agree
And it's oddly fitting over most films lol
I guess?
And it was a big FU to nuclear blast
Dehumanization is far and beyond my personal fav Shuggah moment, it literally feels like the end of the world, glad you actually took the time to go through the whole thing
Its because in a sense it *is* the end of the world. Its the moment when the narrator of the story has a full blown identity crisis and renounces his true self.
46:42
Holy shit, this climax is probably the most brutally punishing breakdown I've ever heard.
Man... Soo groovy, yet so immense
I listen to this part every day on my way to work to wake up
I had the same reaction like this guy.
Man, I have to sit down when that breakdown drops.... unbelivable. Hits like a truck every single time!
What song?
@@weedann Dehumanisation
*Starts Catch 33 again for the hundredth time*
Ah, shit. Here we go again...
46:41 is what the end of the Meshuggah journey feels like. I had the same reaction the first time I heard that part! It doesn't hit as hard unless you listen to the rest of the album beforehand, but it's always worth it. I'll always believe that, between the entire setup to that point, the lyrical content, and the riff itself, it's the most mind-numbingly heavy thing ever made.
Glad you finally got around to this! I can't wait to hear what they bring with their next album, whenever that may be.
All spoken lyrics are performed (and written) by Tomas Haake, because his English is like that of a native speaker.
The lyrics are not performed by Thomas Haake, they're performed by Jens Kidman.
@@_Hitechlowlife Only the guttural vocals are by Kidman. The spoken words are by Haake, on every album (I guess). He said this in some interview.
@@svengah Jens performs the vocals. Gutturals and cleans
@@mulejuice4468No offence, but please look it up before claiming. He does all the live vocals for sure, but we are talking about the studio version.

16:03 that riff on entrapment is my favorite riff of all time. It's so heavy and groovy at the same time, it sounds absolutely disgusting, and then the solo just takes it to another level.
I remember it took me a few listens to this album to really understand how incredible it is. Masterpiece.
Most Spastic riff ever and most minimalistic solo ever.
Rhythm and lead guitar switch roles since the former plays a lot of notes while the latter just 2 on 2 octaves.
Unique.
Your journey is mine, 100%
That riff is definitely a highlight....well, the whole album is. This is one of my top albums of all time
I turn into a feral gorilla when It kicks in
Finally, my favourite album. This was my first Meshuggah Record back in 2005. I could'nt believe that 8 String Guitars were a thing back then. Remember folks, this record came out long before Djent was even a thing. There was nothing remotely similar to this. Thank you for digging into the rabbithole even further. I never thought a youtuber would even dare to tackle the entire album. You deserved it. Keep rockin
The 8 strings really showed up even before that when they made Nothing in 2002. For Nothing they started using 7 string guitars but using the top 7 strings of an 8 string guitar. But they did eventually get 8 string guitars made for them by Nevborn (I think). To some of us real old-head Meshuggah fans, the term "djent" really means something else. :) We weren't calling Nothing and Catch 33 "djent" at the time. The term originally came from the guitar sounds that came from the None and DEI albums where they used heavy palm muting on chords and made this huge "djent" sound. It has since evolved into a whole genre which is associated with really tuned down 8 string guitars and has taken on a different meaning.
@@timothydog76 The original release of Nothing had standard scale Ibanez 7 strings tuned down to F Standard. Meshuggah weren’t super happy with the guitar tone, and shortly after their Nevborn 8 strings came in. They re-recorded all of the guitars on baritone 8 strings and Fred remixed the record. That’s why the re-release guitars so much cleaner and brighter.
@@timothydog76they used 7strings in dei and chaosphere too
That whole-tone ascending riff at 31:49 is one of my all time favorites from them. Perfect placement and HUGE energy boost going to a major key sound
Fuck yes
uncontrollable, over driven vibe
Dehumanization drops like hell, but Sum is like the end of everything, like a perfect ending of that trip, the chaos, feels like the reality is fading, is brilliant.
The struggle to free myself of restraints, becomes my very shackles
I'm 90% sure that if this album never existed, Djent would've never happened.
Destroy, Erase, Improve deserves that credit.
@@janpoelkamp4229 i think nothing is more like it, i dont really consider dei to be djent (thus why I love it so much more)
@@progfox yeah i agree, i feel like dei is more like thrash.
@@im_in_immense_pain nah thats contradictions collapse (also great album) dei is more of a really technical groove metal kinda thing
Nothing. other great Djent stuff like After The Burial sounds a lot like Obsidian and Spasm really influenced their sound
i would 100% recommend listening to Concatenation from their Chaosphere album. It’s the centre of chaos. The adrenaline shakes you paralysed. The only word I can describe it with is Chaos. Pure, bloodshot chaos.
EDIT: Although, I’d highly recommend the Rare Trax version, where it is more slow and groovy. The original one is a bit uhh..
Elastic- the last song from that album- he should listen to that one 💯🔥
@@mattdubya1037 pretty much every song of chaosphere that isn't new millenium cyanide christ is underrated.
I don't listen this album! But I will!
Clockworks makes me think of Concatenation in the way it's a full controlled chaos.
@@morganshibby8941 The first I heard it I felt lost and anxious. But the feel to wanna understand this chaos drew me in. I was amazed at how well constructed it is. These guys are absolutely incredible. Tomas is insane!
Also, a bit of trivia for this album.
Because they kept changing the rhythms and riffs so much while writing the album, it was impossible for Haake to learn everything in time to record. So for the first and only time, most of the drumming on the final cut was programmed using Meshuggah's own highly refined software (I forget the name), using Haake's samples of course. They actually write or develop most of their music in programming first anyway, so it was by far the easiest route (and it still sounds amazing).
Drumkit From Hell.
@@janpoelkamp4229 Yeah!!
Just to add to that, using programmed drums was not a usual thing to do in 2004/2005 at all. Especially since barely anybody could make programmed drums sound so good. They still sound super good even today.
atta boy, that breakdown in dehumanization and then the build-up on sum just gives chills every single time
46:41 I wish I could re-live this moment once again. Just erase it from my brain and let me hear it again :(
Build-up is insane tho
Ha, for me the most brutal part of the album is just before that - 45:56. It's like death in a car crash replayed over and over or getting stabbed in the heart.
I remember it made me stop what I doing and I just sat there frozen in awe of what I just heard
Shed/Personae/Dehuminization/Sum might be the best stretch of music Meshuggah has written but that's just me
Personally, minds mirrors thru in death is death might be my favorite djent song ever. But recently I got a massive appreciation for the last 4 tracks once I really realized what the albums about. It's so darn good.
naw bro best piece of music period
idk why this album isn't talked about as much it's sooo good. everything after minds mirrors is a literal spiral into insanity.... and the screams on shed dehumanization and sum are so good. not to mention probably the most unsettling meshuggah track ever made imo (sum)
I wish I could erase my memory of the countless hours that I've listen to this album, and hear it for the first time again. A god damn masterpiece.
They actually play Mind's Mirror, In Death - Is Life and In Death - Is Death live. They were featured in the Ophidian Trek live video, played a bunched of shows in 2007 and 2012-2016. To say it was spectacular is an understatement. And to see Jens just walking around hyping the crowds and aggressively bops his head up and down because he has very few lines to sing.
They were playing that section in 2005, not 2007 (I saw them live in both years)
@@guitaristssuck8979 they play it on their actual europe tour, we got it live yesterday, i was blown away to hear some catch 33 live theses days
@@lionheart01 I just saw them in London
good on you. this is a stone cold fucking classic from front to back.
Now this is a fucking reaction video!!!!!
This album was my first experience with Meshuggah so this album holds a special place for me.
I would recommend checking out After The Burial, their guitarist is related to Fredrik of Meshuggah.
Collapse would be a great first song to check out
Have heard collapse man!
Man you're in for an amazing journey if this got you into Meshuggah. Also After The Burial are amazing. Check out some of their tracks Drew.
@@APieceOfLiquid i meant back when the album came out. I bought it as my first Meshuggah album. Since then I have heard all of their music
So it’s actually true that they are related?!? Cousins?
That drop in dehumanization is why I choose to continue breathing lmao
This mans doing things no person should ever be doing. Surviving a straight listen-through of the entirety of *Catch 33* , arguably Meshuggah's most mind-meldingly conceptual and Lovecraftian album of all time. An album maybe as legendary as the epic that is ObZen in terms of complexity, paradoxically intertwined with simplicity, and its almost fractally mathematical compositions completely revolutionising the Sound of Metal itself.
Bravo, man. Fekkin bravo. I cannot give you enough praise.
🤣🤣 my pleasure bro!
You made me hate meshuggah with this post
@@MrBaronCabron Woah there, calm down, bud. Try to take things in life a little easier, kay? The comment was meant to be over the top and corny lol.
@@khoile4271 u typed that shit out like it was a part of minds mirrors
@@khoile4271 Not far from the truth though, I totally agree with what you said, Meshuggah is in fact the epitome of metal, some bands come close but no one goes as hard while being original and groovy.
I still don’t understand why some Meshuggah fans rank this album low. (Probably bc of the programmed drums). This album still has some of the best riffs the bands has ever put out.
A lot meshuggah fans didn’t like the move away from the older, thrashy stuff they were doing like chaosphere. Old heads felt like it was a step backwards lol
@@michaelthilges2604 Agreed
I fn love it. I don't understand that either.
i much prefer older meshuggah, but this is the last album that i love with a burning passion, each one had an identity up until obzen were i found they stopped making new songs and started trying to make new *meshuggah* songs, and starts to feel forced (bleed still kickass tho)
i loved it from the moment i first heard it. but i was a huge stoner back then. also, i think after listening to it (easily) 100+ times.. the recurring riffs kinda get bit old. still a great album though and one that definately broadend my horizons.
For me it's always the part at 51:50 that gets me. This album is a monumental masterpiece, especially for it's time. I was first drawn to it shortly after it's release because of it's cool album art, but i was a wee lad and couldn't compute this music until years later. I didn't really like it at first but somehow kept coming back to it - then all the sudden it reaaally clicked...
Everyone always seems to overlook this one, but for me the riff at 43:31 in Personate non Gratae is the pinnacle riff of this album, I just wish it was longer.
This album is CRUSHINGLY god tier. So glad you did the whole thing man! Next up: “Måsstaden under vatten”, you must 😄

The dehumanization breakdown is a neck breaker for me
The brown note at 46:43 started and entire genre of extreme metal...possibly the most brutal tone and riff ever created in rock...I'd love to hear Patrick Batemans take on it. Also, the roar would make Leonidas himself cower...

Catch-33 is something special. The song structure, tone and general atmosphere is a masterclass of songwriting. The album also matches it's concept perfectly. From In Death - is life to the end of the album specifically is probably my favorite piece of music ever written. I remember ripping this album from Kazaa when it came out and had never heard anything like it. Listening to it semi-regularly throughout the years has only made me appreciate it more.
43:30 yes, my face is always like this in that riff
46:45 is when Drew had to change his jocks afterwards.
'tis my favourite part of the entire album. Such a crankable moment.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Unquestionably the most sonically awe-inspiring thing I’ve ever heard and will ever hear. Hands down my favourite Meshuggah moment.
HD video is still processing!! If you want the full experience and the best quality video - give it 30 minutes or so and it should be fully processed & 1080p will be available! 🔥
When Mind's Mirror hits 😏😏
That bit in Entrapment is one of my all time favourite Meshuggah sections, the riff and the solo(?) are just ridiculous.
The mighty badass yet super fucking musical SOLO by the always Mighty legendary Thordendal
Might be my favorite solo period. It is not complex but it just has so much stank on it. Starts with whiplash then hits that catch that gets your head bobbing.
Didn't know thomas haake did a vocal part on this, but i think he did it on "mind's mirror"
Also for the programmed drums, they said that during the reccording process, they keep changing the riff/tracks every times so to avoid Thomas learning new riff every day, they made the drums with a drum machin call "drumkit from hell" wich is basically 600 sample from Thomas drums. and at the end, they keep it cause they though the sound was good
Bruh and your face during mInds miror LMFAO XD
Drumkit from hell was also used by Devin Townsend in the first Ziltoid album, and what a masterpiece it was!
19:45 when they played that at Graspop my ankles actually collapsed and had to lie down for a while... All the time shouting the words ofcourse.
Oh damn, is that TesseracT behind you? Altered State was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Normally I prefer a screamer but they really made that album work with clean vox. Great taste mate.
Yessir. My favourite album man!
I remember liking Meshuggah before Catch 33, but this is the album that made it for me around 05, 06. After that I went back in their catalogue and fell in love. Even to this day.
I purchased Chaosphere in November 2003 because I heard NMCC on the Ozzfest 2002 cd
The best thing about it all, I still remember you struggling to find the groove, asking us what to look for, what to listen to, and here you are, bobbing your head in straight 4/4 to frickin' Catch 33.
All my wishes granted!
Cheers brother! Much love from Hungary!

Yeah especially in the end of dehumanization that's very confusing with all the layers above layers and the guitar changing the pattern in the middle of it...
I definitely wouldn’t recommend Catch 33 for a shroom trip

final boss of polymeters
This is easily my favorite Meshuggah album. It's a journey, and each time is different.
Hilariously, I put on Catch 33 to fall asleep almost every night. :)
Just a side note. As I understand it, with "one long song" albums like these, the main reason they split the piece into so many smaller tracks is so that the album can still qualify as an album and not an EP (which earns reduced revenue in many cases). I think artistically, Meshuggah would have wanted to put the record out as one long piece of music, like "I".
That's exactly what happened. Meshuggah wanted to release it as one track but the record label demanded they split it up into tracks
@@02SplinterCell02 Don't know if you know The Mars Volta, but their album Frances the Mute had (I think) five songs, of which one was 32 minutes long but also split into parts. Very interesting band btw!
@@Diesel_Budgie I heard it a few years ago and it reminded me of Red Sun Rising on crack. Honestly wasn't a fan of it

This is the record that completely made me love Meshuggah!! I had listened to Nothing and I, but I was all in with this one. Obzen is definitely my favourite, but In Death Is Life/Is Death are by far my favourite Songs! When they played them live, I lost my shit!!!
Edit: Wrote the initial comment before your reaction to Is Life!! Hahahaha. Your reaction says eveything about those tracks! Meshuggah showing why they are their own entity!!...

Having experienced it, can't believe I'm still breathing!!

The clean section on “in death is death” is nightmare fuel and I love it. Lmfao
Do not do acid and listen to it. You'll never recover
Awesome! Please revisit Between the Buried and Me
Full album react to Colors and Colors II? A man can dream lol
Entrapment is my favourite track on this record. The weird leads over that absolute monster of a riff is like the actual nastiest thing in existence. Shits fuckin viiiiile dawg
I really really like the piece of music at 35min. Its like a morbid woozy walk though a nightmarish nocturnal landscape from a horror movie. An eerie lucid dream of melted memories and painful premonitions. I think too, it sounds both super chilled out like your floating aimlessly in haunting deep space, or underwater in a deep icy abyss. Its very cinematic, haunting, and evoking. I appreaciate the heavier side of the band, but that creepy interlude was it for me.
Yeah man it’s creepy as fuck
Best section of the album for me. That and the wall of guitars that occur on Sum.
Finally you foking did it!
Oh man this album, as much as I love Meshuggah, some part are a descent to hell that makes me so uncomfortable, but then I go through it and what a brutal journey!!

That doggo was feeling the groove 😆
9:10 I have fallen asleep to catch thirtythree so many times. The insane rhythmic patterns start to feel like a whirlpool in my brain.
It’s quite mesmerising, could definitely fall asleep under the right circumstances for sure. In the video I was more so referring to the fact that I was so hyped to listen to the album that I couldn’t possible fall asleep, lol
Same! People think I'm insane because I fall asleep to Meshuggah, but the beat and rhythm of (some of) their songs are really relaxing to me.
I've fallen asleep listening to Bleed lol.
I've fallen asleep to Cradle Of Filth, during the loudest parts, but the rare quiet parts were waking me up... I think it's all about the dynamics
Hahaha, I love you guys. The droning mids just take me to sleep.
I knew after the 39 min mark he was going to react that way lol
Every band can do metal but no one can groove like Meshuggah
Your mind is gonna be blown by their light show in Dublin. Fingers crossed it goes ahead in June!
Alright, now do Vildhjarta - måsstaden under vatten, the whole 80-minute thing!
On more than one occasion I've seen Thordendal's solos referred to as "Holdsworthian". Alan holdsworth, jazz fusion guitarist, is def worth checking out
"My brain is trying to process these signatures." 😅 Well technically it's the odd groupings, the time signature remains 4/4, but their riffs are odd groupings that cycle over that, creating metric displacement/polymeters. They're mental on this record. 😅
A magical album! So glad you enjoyed it (certainly not for all....)!
Truly original (ever for them) and a bit of a slow starter but then... oh my god!... Favorite track(s) In death is life/is death.
Chaosphere album next ;)
First comment..long time viewer: you legend. Now you know. Really enjoyed this!
Love it man, thank you! Glad you enjoyed 🙌🏻🙌🏻
You did it first man, now this is dedication, I was impressed with "I" and now a full album? Let's go!
You should check the album "8" of Uneven Structure. It's also the one long track album like Catch 33 and it's also blowing mind!
Amazing reaction video as usual! That is a tremendous album, unbelievable. Next stop: Sol Niger. Please 😄🤟🏼
This whole album is kind of an extension off their 20+ minute song "I". Even though these are separated into tracks, this whole album is just one song to me.
It took what was good about “I” and made it better (the screams and the riffs)
The reason why they went with programmed drums was because they wanted to give the album a cold mechanical feeling. The drum parts are fully playable.
Yes! Good man. Glad you did a long vid reacting to them all. I missed out on Meshuggah tickets for Dublin.
Actually there's still tickets I think. I may have to buy one haha.
