    Those are the BEST iron Magnum style head made, as far as potential. They have the roughest cast ports I believe I have ever seen, but when professionally ported, only a W-2 (also ported) will outflow them. I have some of the 2.02" versions I bought new in 2004 (had them ported and flowed) and a 1.92 set I bought used about a year ago. I want to get the used set ported and bumped to a bigger intake valve (maybe 2.05"?) with Crower double springs. I had the new ones set up with Howards single springs for a custom Engle flat tappet cam on a 365" with KB quench pad pistons. Really a killer street setup!! Many avoid the MoPar castings, iron and aluminum, but they all have some interesting features and great potential. We used the Magnum Aluminum heads on a 408" flat-top stroker and ran deep 6sec 1/8mi times on motor in an A-body chassis. They have a 52cc chamber so you don't need a domed piston to get 12.5:1+ compression, better flow and lighter weight!! This was all with a no maintenance hydraulic roller Comp Cam with only 242/248*@.050" and .575" lift with 1.6 roller rockers.

      WOW! Very nice! I didn’t cc the chamber, my bad, I should have but didn’t think of it until you mentioned it.
      Nice build

    Some potential there for sure.

    The best upgrade I've done to both my sets of RT heads now has been using a 1.476 X.625 spring seat cutter and getting rid of the stupid lip that Mopar left in the spring pocket using your 2.2/ Mopar performance retainer that come on those cylinder heads. Heads you compare that with a set of crower 68405 valve springs which makes a really nice upgrade over the stock, spring or spring options available

      Thanks Aaron! Where did you pick up the spring cutter?

    Hensley Racing always told me these heads were hands down best small block head besides W2's. This was 25 years ago of course.

    • @Robs-Garage-experiments
      @Robs-Garage-experiments  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hensley would know! Everything “Best” has a shelf life. There is a very good chance these heads could go 300+ cfm as I have been told. No plans for that though. Today, the HEMI head does that as delivered.

    I have a set on my 1995 Ram. Probably put 140k miles in them. That engine makes around 340 hp, with a small cam. Impressive heads, even though the intake port is a little big.
    BTW, pretty sure they are 5/16 stems, not 8 mm.

    • @Robs-Garage-experiments
      @Robs-Garage-experiments  10 месяцев назад +1

      5/16 not 8mm? Thanks. You’re probably right. I’ll whip out the measuring tool later on. I’ll be cleaning up the valves soon.
      What cam & kind of tappers did you install?

    • @v8packard
      @v8packard 10 месяцев назад

      @@Robs-Garage-experiments I used a custom ground Comp cam, using their lobe 3311. It was on a 112 degree lobe separation angle, with 34 degrees of overlap giving 258 degrees duration @ .006 tappet rise. Installed on a 108 degree intake centerline. It came to 206 degrees @ .050 intake/exhaust, and .486 lift with 1.52 rockers. At the time, there were one or two roller rockers on the market for a Magnum, but they weren't great. I wanted to make the valvetrain adjustable, so I found a rocker stud and rocker that worked, and put it together with those parts with a 1.52 ratio. I used stock replacement Sealed Power roller lifters. It worked well but I would do a very different cam today.

    Thanks for the follow up on the RT heads. Time for me to start searching for this needle in the haystack if they are out there somewhere. I sure would like to find a set! What might be the limited brands of intakes that can fit these heads? Love your videos as I always learn from them!

    • @Robs-Garage-experiments
      @Robs-Garage-experiments  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks DrGo. These heads are a needle the haystack. They are out there but owners are not letting them go.
      MoPar had (key word- HAD) a dual and single plane intake for these heads. Currently made are the Chink dual pattern Edelbrock knock off, the Edelbrock RPM & Indy has intakes. There big bad ass race single plane and the ModMan intake with several tops to choose from.
      FWIW - Edelbrocks own Magnum head is a good choice to use if these iron gems can’t be found when the time comes. I don’t know how the flow rates stack up against each other. Only what Edelbrock lists. A talented head porter will make ether one move air really well. Who comes out on top or just the simple comparison between the heads would be really interesting to see and not so much who flows more at a high lift but the over all curve.

      Thank you so much Rob for the helpful information. I need just a little patience. I suppose the hunt is half the joy and a good part of the story one can tell when their build is finally completed. I will see how parts hunting goes this spring and if needed, I can look at those alternative heads you suggested. You and Charlie share information and educate me that has helped me understand better and already avoid potential bad decisions of buying parts that would not be well suited for my intended mild street build. I have a small block Mopar, so I am hooked on watching videos from you and Charlie!

      My best advice for power, afford the best cylinder head you can.
      Hopefully all goes well here and I can get to the dyno for some Tom Foolery testing of various heads and cams.

      You’re going to find out soon n a little while. I have to order up valves as 5 of the valves that came in the head are bent. I’ll be looking at Chevy +.100 valves for more valve spring installed height will h better springs.

      How are those Edelbock heads treating you?
      They should have cleaned up fine and basically be abolt on and go. They seen very little usage.

    Nice video. Do you know what the possible power gains with a direct bolt on RT 1.92 head be over the stock 1.92 heads?

    • @Robs-Garage-experiments
      @Robs-Garage-experiments  2 месяца назад

      @@clifff6597 Soeey but no. Port flow numbers would be helpful though. That of which I do not have. The other thing is not taking advantage of the ports increased flow. If you’re not lifting the valve up into a higher flow range, generally speaking, there is no point even though there would be a power gain. I just can say how much It would be though.
      IMO, if you have a set of 1.92 heads, flow tested or not though it’s a good idea to actually know how well they flow and there characteristics. Just bolt them and and try them out!

      @@Robs-Garage-experiments I was curious of the HP gains. I was on of the "lucky ones" to get the Mopar Magnum M1 intake many years ago....Do you have an email address that can contact? I have other questions about those heads and a 360 to a 408 stroker conversion.

      @@Robs-Garage-experiments thanks for the reply. I don't have access to a flow bench to test that. When I had the engine built many years ago, the heads were supposed to ported, polished and gasket matched by a Performance shop in Phoenix ,Arizona area. The heads sit on top of a 408ci built Stroker. Forged Rods, pistons and Mopar performance crankshaft. I was curious about what gains i would expect to see from changing to the R/T heads

      No shit. I own 2 sets of W2 & W5’s thank you very much and while there are not the same they are similar and against the LA head ports, not even close.
      Awfully quick response by you miss understanding what I’m trying to say.
      Perhaps you should watch the video again and relax, take a valium and probably don’t post while intoxicated.
      The sentiment expressed by head porters I personally spoke with along with forum boards that span the nation, they all said there W2 like. Not the same as W2’s.
      So I’ll not look anything up but you can watch the video again and see where you’re not paying attention. The. Go look up stuff for yourself.
