    How to tear down a junkyard engine and see what parts can be salvaged for the rebuild. Ours is a 1998 5.9L Dodge Magnum engine which, once rebuilt, will drop into a '99 Dodge Dakota replacing the existing 5.2L. Throughout the tear down we do a little engine CSI (crime scene investigation) to see how badly the engine was mistreated and find out what parts may have been replaced or modified. We've listed the steps in the timeline so you can jump to the appropriate section to follow along during your own teardown.

    These 5.9's are great engines. Parts are easy to come by, and they just do not have many issues. I have a near mint condition 2000 ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9, only 106k miles, and it has never let me down. 3 years of daily driving with minimal issues.

    I really love my dodges. I have the 5.9 in a 3/4 ton truck. Its a great engine. People just need to realize that the 5.9 in a 3/4 ton truck is not intended for speed, but when i need to tow or haul something, its plenty of power. When i want speed, ill take a charger rt with the hemi.

    Personally as a Dodge Durango SLT with a 5.9 owner I am in heaven with this video. I have worked on my past cars all chevys sadly (family brand loyalty pressure) :( and have quite a bit of knowledge of working on cars and have worked as a Jr mech in a few shops as well as doing most of my own work except transmission work (won't touch that at all lol) and this video is exactly what I needed. I do plan on upgrading my 5.9 one day and had already planned on a 408 stroker. Love they guys on this team and the approach, just a couple of everyday guys in a garage at your house, not some pretty boys in super shop wich normal people will never see the inside of or have access to. Don't get me wrong I love watching those shows, have been watching them since I could watch tv and I am 55 going on 56 soon. Have learned a ton from those shows as well. But as someone who will one day do what these guys are doing now is perfect. Out of everything I have done I personally never tore down and did a rebuild on a engine. Have helped others do theirs just not my own. Can not wait to see where this goes. You have definitely got a new subscriber and will pass on the word about this to others. Thank you all very much.

    You can drill the oil galley a little bit larger in the block and run a higher volume pump to help with better crank shaft oiling. Which is particularly helpful if you are going to use it with a manual transmission. That is what we did for our 3500 duely.

    As soon as you said dakota I said ugh...lol my dodge 1500 ram with the 5.9L (360) engine is a pulling beast not for speed which it was never meant to be. Mine is in great shape, but I'll tell you something amazing my Dad took care of his 78 Dodge Ramchager it has the precursor LA318 in it it has 879K miles on it and that was 25yrs ago when the speedometer broke!! My Dad passed and I inherited the ramcharger. It needs work but the engine is glorious! Anyway if good and done yeah a 360 in a Dakota would be amazing. My ram magnum must be a lucky one it's trouble free. Good luck guys.

    I've got 2 in my garage. One has 187k on it the other has about 200k. Both need timing chains, both have shot main & rod bearings. One has 1 cracked head,the other has 2 cracked heads. The one with 187k came out of a 2000 Durango that my uncle used to own. He never beat on this rig,he's a senior citizen and he's got a CDL. So I know he doesn't drive like a maniac. They're probably good engines when they're newer but.... Both of those engines still seem to run ok even though they have some issues. The only reason I pulled the engine out of the Durango is that it began making a clunky noise. One of the skirt broke off the #1 piston
    And it was loosing coolant here and there. That was leaking rear freeze plug behind the bell housing. I found it more cost effective to buy a remanufactured engine with a 3yr no fault warranty rather than throwing money at an old engine that might not last too long.

    Been awhile since I've been inside a mopar. Learned a good bit here. I've got a 98 ram 1500, short box with the 5.2. The 318's were always the little workhorse motor's as we say 'back in the day'. I'm just guessing the 'roller's are part of the 'magnum' upgrade? I like that fact. Just dianosed mine having the famous plenum bottom plate gasket failure a couple days ago. The money light coded an excessice number of misfires on #8. Crankcase has 8-9# vaccumn. I dont drive the truck daily but not going to put off the repair. Of course I'll know more when I get a look inside as to making the decision of upgrade gaskets or replacing steel plate with aluminum upgrade, we'll see. Other than the current issue the motor runs great, got a feeling I'll see a bit of difference once the gasket issue is resolved. Would be nice to see a little improved fuel mileage, lol. Its doing around 14-15 mpg now, not the greatest for a 318. Got the truck for 1500$ about 7 years ago, used it as a daily driver work truck, laid out a lot of miles with it. It's got 185K on the clock and other than standard maintaince it has only cost me a waterpump. Not bad. Since I was paid mileage the truck more than paid for itself. I like it and plan on keeping it around. Did all the body work, hand sanded to the zinc coat and primed it is now waiting for me to do the top coat. Then the gasket showed its ugly head. Spraying is going to be pushed back 2-3 weeks as Im on a tight budget now. The truck has been great therapy helping me recover from the ill effects of chemo and radiation treatments to DEFEAT stage 3 lung cancer. Kinda adds a bit of sentamental value there....for a time I had thought I would loke to get my hands on an old 340 carburetor'ed and do a build but no more than its driven now decided to keep it original. I was a big mopar fan back in the 60's-70-s and found myself liking on the bowtie's, had and 88 short stepside w/ 350. Nice, but after 10 years or so I'm back on the mopar train...going to take more time than normal on the plenum repair, trying to get over a pulled muscle in my back and bending over under the hood is rough on us older guys these days, lol. You guys keep on hammering, love your shows, lots of good clear knowledge to be learned.

      Ive got a 98 Dakota with the 5.2..a cheaper and effective repair for the gasket is this...buy the thick yellowish gasket paper from the parts store. Purchase flat washers for the bolts..nice wide ones that are bigger than the bolt heads..Torque to specs..Been on this repair for 4yrs now.

    • @jamesmoore3346
      @jamesmoore3346 3 года назад +1

      @@billcat1840 I did the repair couple+ months ago. Bought an upgraded gasket kit supplied by Dorman for $38.00. It included all gaskets, lower plenum bolts with wide flange washers, intake bolts, coolant bypass hose, even a 185° thermostat. Ran the motor about an hour after I cranked it up and changed the oil and filter. Did some other little maintiance things to it while it was easier to get to while it was apart. Its not a difficult job, just took me longer as I was seeing a chiropractor for a bad lower back issue (pinched nerve). All is good now. Motor runs extremely smooth, noticed a mild power increase and especially in the lower rpm torque. I did not realize how much motor oil was being sucked through the rotted gasket. Before the repair I was using a quart of oil every 1200 miles, just figured old motor wear amd weak rings. Since doing the fix and changing oil and filter it has not used any oil, still on the full mark after better than 1600 miles. I still can't understand where dodge labeled it a 'MAGNUM', the only thing I see they changed was went to a roller cam and lifters and I got to say, in all my years mechanicing the 'kegger' style intake has got to be the most restrictive intake I've ever seen...lol. Since fixing the intake gasket, I bought a set of used michelin tires and hadca set of 17" chrome factory wheels from a newer dodge. Got rid of the skinney little 16" wheels that was on it and finished up the body work I started on over 3 years ago. Even put a fresh paint job on it. Its now a satin black finish, looks pretty good. I'm getting back into doing things that got put on hold while I went through chemo and radiation treatments for stage 3 lung cancer. I BEAT the cancer but not the effects of the chemo and radiation treatments, lol. Doctors had give me 'about 90 days', that was over 5 yrs ago and I still alive, just not 100% but I'm alive and able to enjoy life with my family and friends. Just a lot slower now, lol.

    I just got done doing the entire top end on mine. Timing set, cam, cam bearings, lifters, push rods, rockers and heads, and another tune. Did the rear seal too since the motor was out of the truck.
    Went with a recommended set of lifters from Hughes, variable rate, and looks like I'll have to go back in and swap them for an OEM style High Performance lifter, maybe from Rhodes. I've had the variable rate lifters readjusted twice now and STILL can't get the preload right on them. They really make a racket at idle.

    Excellent video, I want to put a 4 inch stroker kit in my 360 LA, ( truck engine)
    I am more interested in making torque rather than HP.
    Operating range is basically from idle to 3,500. With the rare, but occasional trip to 4,500.
    I am installing a 5.2 liter magnum in the truck until the LA is completed.
    I am undecided on what style heads to use, LA or magnum, but am leaning towards LA, I am not overly concerned about top end flow rate or high compression. I am more interested in velocity and being able to run 87 to 89 pump gas.
    I subscribed and am looking forward to see this build, and see what your final product ends up being.

    I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9 an I'm having some issues it has no spark but has fuel. She won't start unless you give her gas and keep giving it gas as soon as you stop it dies. I have checked my pick up coil, tps, the distributor cap along with the roater and sensor underneath I've checked my fuses and they all are fine.

    I just recently bought a 1996 ram 2500 with a 5.9
    Original engine had 330,000 on it, but it got swapped for another 5.9 with only 100,000.
    Runs good, bit think it needs new injectors, found the 4 hole Bosch ones for a good price.
    Also will be putting a "new" rebuilt transmission in it, unfortunately it's an automatic.

    If I can't get the fan clutch off. I use a strap wrench or a cloth around the pulley and a chain wrench then I use a large wrench or an adjustable wrench ( crescent wrench) adjustable hammer 😆 to loosen the fan clutch. Note that they usually have reverse threads. Turn the big nut on the clutch fan to the right to loosen it.

    When dropping my oil pan to replace a rear main seal, can I take off the other bearing caps on my 318 5.2 L Magnum? Just to assess crankshaft bearing health and look for scoring on this 1993 with 192,000 on it? Are all the bearing caps just torqued to 80 foot pounds?

      Yes..I did this to change my main bearings. makes changing seal easier as the crank slighty drops. The flywheel/flexplate and timing chain keeps it from falling on your head.

    A bit off on the usage of cross hatching, it’s important because as the piston moves up and down, the piston rings rotate because of that cross hatching pattern. That rotation is essential because it assures that the gap in the rings don’t align which would cause the pressure in the combustion chamber to escape, aka blow by

    • @bradleynelson5915
      @bradleynelson5915 7 месяцев назад

      So when the engine gets alot of miles on it's belt, and the cross hatching is gone, does the rings still rotate to keep the end gaps from lining up? Asking for a friend.

      @@BSIncorp Guess that could be true but I would of thought Mopar engineers would have taken care of that rather than let it go on for years. IMO from experience with a flat plate on another mfg engine with a split intake they just end up flexing from the intense vacuum anf or from 1000's of cycles(metal fatigue). The edge that the plate has to seat against isn't that wide either. Surprised they didn't put a reinforcing rib down center. We just built one out of 0.375 thick 6061. Did it for under $50 but time will tell if it works / lasts.

Its coming up on a year, next week, since this video, so I'd like to make an observation in form of suggestion - post a video on the engine upgrades/rebuild stuff that you are waiting on and the plan. Many of us do our work on vehicles/engines during these cold inclement months so we can't wait to see what you did. With Covid many have to stay at home for that reason as well. Its too late for me I've already gotten my parts and done 80% of my budget stroker rebuild. If you guys had said 'we decided on doing this, or getting that, or are planning to yada yada'' that can be helpful to us. Maybe you can at least do that now for others while you are waiting for the borders to open.
