  • It's been a while since we began our 5.9L Magnum engine rebuild for our Dodge Dakota snow wheeling 4x4. Covid has prevented us from getting all the parts we need but we haven't been completey idle. Here's an update on the products we have received, why we chose them and what alternate options are available to you.

    The 360 and 318s are very underrated and for mopar guys we know what they can do and the rest of the world still pushes the 350 chevy. Great engines but the 360 is another animal. Truely a little known beast that easily beats the 350. Love these engines

      It really comes down to the copyright of parts. A water pump for 318/360 is 3 times as much

    Great to see you guys back on this project.
    My project reminder from last year:
    "This is a timely project. I have a 1995 Jeep Grand with a 5.2L that I purchased new for my wife; I've been saving it for my daughter's first ride; we are starting a resto-mod this winter. The engine has 225K on the clock but runs great; what I understand from your statement 5.2 and 5.9 are almost identical. I may need to freshen up the engine, or maybe not; would you consider highlighting the difference between the 5.2 and 5.9 as you go along. Odd as it seems, I also have a 97 dodge with a 5.9 outback the barn; I don't know what I want to do with it, but this may give me ideas. Thanks for sharing..."
    Our Project has stalled but not stopped, I'm still planning the 5.9 swap, but this last year and a half have been a challenge for us; we/I am back up to speed (mostly), and I'm slowly getting my shop ready for Winter projects.
    I'm definitely going to pull the 5.9 this winter and tear it down; with luck next winter, it will go into the Jeep.
    Thanks again for the update and the parts list, looking forward to your next video.
    Stay well...

    90% of people driving around with these small block Magnum Motors have small cracks in their heads at the values. If the values seat like they are supposed to, then it doesn't even effect performance at all as a normal everyday driver.

    5.9 cylinder heads cracking between the valves isn’t an issue. They will work just fine. Just an FYI. The crack doesn’t effect compression or water jacket at all.

    Glad to see you have finally given your base a long over due update. The underlying reason for delay was legit. Hope you will be able to continue doing at least this but with less time between them. Year was a little bit long.. course ours are starting to drag too so we can't be too critical LOL

    • @BSIncorp
      @BSIncorp 3 года назад +2

      They don't crack into a cooling passage, so no point pulling the motor apart to repair them! If the motor's already apart, might as well replace them to ensure a good valve seal.

    I really like this build. That being said you are going to be a good 100 HP shy of 500 RWHP. Using the stock intake is a fools errand at this power level and with those heads, also your cam is way small for 408 CI.

    What kind of cylinder heads did you get

  • @stevenmitchell6347
    @stevenmitchell6347 2 года назад +1

    How was the oiling issue from the block to the heads addressed? I must have missed it. The Magnum oils through the pushrod tubes and the LA/shaft through holes in the block from the main gallery...holes that don't exist in the Magnum block.

    • @BSIncorp
      @BSIncorp Год назад

      You are 100% correct. the rocker arm we used from Harland Sharp are designed for this Magnum Block and Trick Flow Cylinder Head combination. Stock roller lifters and hollow pushrods from Comp were used as well.

  • @yutub561
    @yutub561 2 года назад +1

    Was I understanding correctly that the jog you made was for drilling the LA bolt pattern into heads made for the magnum? Or were they LA style heads drilled to Magnum intake bolt pattern?
    I'm building a Magnum right now from an 01. Converting it to coil near plug on a holley terminator. Not sure if heads are in my budget so I'd like to re-use my factory heads which are still in good shape, but I do want to have the LA intake pattern.

    • @BSIncorp
      @BSIncorp Год назад

      The jig was designed to be used either way. we used it for drilling the Magnum pattern in the LA heads.

  • @sidewyndersshed1676

    With the LA shaft style rockers, how are you oiling them?
    Are you drilling open the oiling boss in the magnum block and using solid pushrods (like an LA)
    Or is the magnum style of oiling through hollow pushrods sufficient for shaft style rockers?

    • @BSIncorp
      @BSIncorp 3 года назад +2

      Harland Sharp sells shaft rockers that using the magnum pushrod oiling system to lube everything. That's what's going into this motor. there is a passage through the rocker cup and into the shafts which lube the shaft bearings. T&D performance make a very nice set of shaft rocker with oil guides to direct oil the springs. TrickFlow said that splash oiling the springs with the Harland Sharpe unit would be just fine for this build.

    What is the plan is for the rockers and bottom end components?

    • @BSIncorp
      @BSIncorp 3 года назад +1

      With the LA style heads and magnum block, we went with a set of Harland Sharp shaft rockers designed for this. T&D machine make a bad ass set too, but were over our budget. The bottom end we will go into detail on once it's here, but a stroker kit from Eagle is waiting at the boarder.

    The 1st video made a lot of sense and was very helpful. Now You keep talking about LA series even though this video is supposed to be about a magnum. You have said both that your new head Is a magnum head and an LA style head. In short you confused me even farther than I already was. I have a wrist pin issue I need to rebuild my truck which will be my 1st vehicle rebuild. I've done motorcycles even been to school for aviation maintenance. But you seem to keep contradicting yourself and I can't seem to follow you. But you seem to keep contradicting yourself and I can't seem to follow you Can explain better but why do you keep referencing and LA engine if we are only working on and concerned about Dodge magnum? Will that head work on my 2003 5.9 magnum? Or is it an la head like you Contradictorily said at around 7:08 min? Please advise.

    • @BSIncorp
      @BSIncorp 3 года назад +2

      The Magnum/LA intermeshing is confusing, no matter how you slice it. This head is designed to work PRIMARILY with the LA motor, but with additional aftermarket parts (the rocker shaft system) can work with Magnum blocks as well. IF you use a stock Magnum intake manifold, you need to redrill the heads to match the bolt pattern. if you are going with an aftermarket intake manifold with the LA style bolt pattern, no need to drill the heads. I hope that clears things up a bit.

    Use 5.2 heads, bigger valves...... knock down the flash on the runners, nothing overboard, round off the guide ends, and deshroud the valves..... huge increase in flow without extensive porting...... that and a next stage cam, wakes em right up
