      I have a 5.2 Dak and when I first got it the owner told me about the knock in park and drive… tore the heads off inspected bottom end and it was fine… reinstalled new gaskets and still knocking… found out it didn’t do it in neutral XD took the trans down and boom. Warped+cracked flex plate

    If those are the stock stamped rockers every 5.9 I've had my hands on had movement when the valves were fully closed. Thats actually normal. You have to make sure the cups on the stock rocker arent blown out also.

    as you know videos dont do a sound any justice... only thing i can add without hearing it in person is did you try pulling the serpentine belt
    to see if the noise goes away?? to me it sounds like it could be an accessory or possibly timing chain slap

    Cut oil filter open and look for metal. It seems to me to be a cracked flexplate. Remove the transmission bellhousing lower cover, make sure the converter bolts are not hitting the cover. Look for flexplate cracks.

    You drove it back from Vagas unless it's a thrust bearing its not a bearing issue but anything really can be used as a stethoscope wrench long extension screwdriver pry bar 2x4

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  Год назад +1

      Used stethoscope today it’s louder when on the transmission bell housing but I’m not ruling out bad rod bearings and it amplifying through the crank

  • @richardblair5671
    @richardblair5671 Год назад +4

    Stethoscope that timing chain cover. It'll be taping on the left side 2/3 of the way down

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  Год назад +1

      It’s loudest with the stethoscope on the transmission bell housing but also similar audible level at the rear of the engine block. Haven’t been able to narrow it down between the two yet unless I start ripping things apart

    • @richardblair5671
      @richardblair5671 Год назад +1

      Ooooo, I would definitely lean toward torque converter as theres nothing in the motor that can make that noise. Rod knock would be unmistakable during cold start. And has a distributor drive shaft back there and that's it. Easier to pull motor and trans together in that truck. Me and my son's do it on a Saturday morning.

  • @think1stproductions
    @think1stproductions Год назад

    My 95 Lightning sounded a lot like it. Ended up being loose rocker arms and I adjusted them all down to 3/4 turn past zero lash and it all went away but I don't think yours are adjustable. If they aren't then it could be some bad lifters that won't prime up under acceleration etc. It could possibly be a loose flex plate or one that lost a counter weight maybe.

    Could be broken tourqe converter or front pump in transmission...the tick kinda is not with the engine RPM till it's reved up had a Mopar with broken converter sounded like a rod knock/wrapping..and had one sound like a dead lifter tick.👍👌✌️🇺🇸🇺🇲

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  Год назад

      This is interesting. On part 2 of this I just finished filming today I used a stethoscope and it’s loudest when I prove the bell housing on the transmission. When I probe the back of the block it isn’t as loud but it’s either rod bearings or the torque converter I’m just trying to narrow it down rather than just replacing either one hoping it’s the issue. Can you tell me more about how you figured out it was the converter?

  • @blabla903
    @blabla903 Год назад

    I'm surprised that you didn't immediately recognize it as a valve-train issue. You even pulled the valve cover and noticed the loose rocker arms. Unless the piston is top dead center, the rocker arm should be nice and tight.
    My suggestion is this: Pull those valve covers off again, remove the rocker arms, push rods, and lifters being extremely diligent in remembering which rocker arms, bolts, push rods, and lifters go in which position (you may need a special lifter removal tool to get the lifters out). Inspect all of the valve train components for any excessive wear or grooving and replace all of them if even one of them is failing. Attempt to compress the lifters while they are still full of oil. If you are able to compress the lifter at all while it is full of oil, then you may have a failing lifter and it should be replaced. You might be able to get away with bleeding the lifter and cleaning it, but lifters are often very cheap so its easier to replace them. It is very common for engines of all types to have lifters or rocker arms that fail and they will often make a "ticking" noise. Please try out what I suggested and let me know if it worked for you. Good luck!

    To test the flywheel crack just let the truck idle on the lift and spray wd40 through the inspection cover onto the flywheel, if the noise goes away you have a crack in the flywheel

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  Год назад

      No visible cracks that I can see

    • @jcbrtr86
      @jcbrtr86 Год назад +1

      The crack will be around the flywheel to crank bolts and will not be visible from the inspection plate.
