When he called Draco 'ballsy' and applauded during his sorting ceremony I thought: 'Yeah this one's a Slytherin'. My next thought: 'He's gonna be so pissed at how Slytherins are treated in this series.' I'm not a Slytherin but it's my favourite house and I was so disappointed how they were represented.

And I have to agree, Tom Felton was the best child actor in the series. His performance is so underappreciated.
Rupert Grint was also an amazing actor, very expressive in a natural way, just what the role they gave him needed.

One of my favorite things in the book that they didn't show in the movie was Fred and George used to enjoy in the winter time bouncing snowballs off the back of quirrell's head. They were actually hitting Voldemort in the face with snowballs.

The 3rd floor corridor on that side was only forbidden this one year because of the stone. As to injuries, your perception of what's dangerous is different when you have a spell or potion to fix most things fairly easily.

in the books Harry picked the owl as a pet. Hagrid told him he is gonna buy him a pet as a birthday present and told him that Toads are no longer 'in style', so he picked an owl. He later named her Hedwig, name he found in one of the books he bought for school.
@@stefanbre92 Harry did not actually pick an owl. Hagrid told Harry that he would buy him an owl because toads were no longer in style and he didn't like cats because they made him sneeze. Harry may or may not have picked Hedwig - the book does not depict the scene in the pet shop, we can only "see" Hagrid and Harry leaving the pet shop with Hedwig - whether Harry picked her or whether Hagrid picked her for Harry is unknown.
@@peceneprase i know, but it says something like "20 minutes later, they left the store and harry was carrying a cage where white snow owl slept" or similar. he was there for pet picking, not like in movie where Hagrid just appears with it.

When Harrys mother Lily received her Hogwarts letter his aunt Petunia was jealous and wrote a letter to Dumbledore asking if she could go there too. He kindly told her she can’t study there because she was a muggle and from that point on she resented witches & wizards. One of the reasons she treated harry so cruelly.
She also knew about the Dementors -- when Harry and Dudley were attacked, she was able to corroborate Harry's dementor story

The houses are about traits - Gryffindor is about bravery - Ravenclaw is about intelligence - Hufflepuff is about empathy and Slytherin is about ambition

@@DarksideGmss0513 I suppose that many people would fit into several houses, Hermione is definitely very intelligent, but she is also brave - perhaps, like with Harry, the sorting hat responded to her own wishes ... also, while the houses are summed up with a single word, I'm sure there is a much greater detail for each, so perhaps her intelligence was not the most important aspect.
All that said, let's face it, mostly the author wanted her in the same house as Harry and needed her character to be smart so there was someone to guide Harry.

Maggie Smith Is fantastic in this series, and she is definitely one of my favorites. I especially love the scene where she gets Harry his broom before his first quidditch match.
- Yes, I read that she was actually very sick in the making of some of the later films, but she refused to skip out on work and made sure to do her lines and never missed a day of doing her role. She is as bad ass as her character.

When I went to the Harry Potter world at Universal Studios and got a wand it was Maggie's. It isn't as flashy or as popular as others but I adored her. She was one of my favorite characters and a badass 🥰

It's so funny how annoyed Ash is by Hermoine. I didn't watch these movies until I was 24-ish but as a non-book reader that didn't know her impact on this story, I felt the same way initially.
Honestly as I grew older I found her more annoying in the first movie 😂 as a kid that was still in school I think we strive to be more like her so we’re not as bothered but now I see her as a snobby pain in the arse lmao
Nobody who doesn't know her full story likes her in the beginning, that's the point. Harry and Ron don't like her either. She is trying too hard to impress and spoiling the fun for the boys who just want to explore a world "new" to them. Harry comes from an abusive muggle family, Ron is practically invisible at home with so many siblings. It's the first time they are out on their own and Hermione is acting like she is their mom or something. It's even worse in the books. (btw like your name "Arch Stanton" ;D)

The thing about Hermione is yes she is a little bit of a know-it-all at the beginning but she feels that she has to be because she comes from Mogul parents she has something to prove in that world she is going to be looked down upon because she has no magical heritage. That's why she feels she has to be better than everyone else to prove she belongs.
As a book reader, my biggest issue with Hermione is they gave a lot of Ron's best lines and moments to her in the movies. Ron is the one that grew up in the wizarding world, so, in the books he knows some useful information that Hermione doesn't. The worst example of Hermione stealing Ron's thunder is in the 3rd movie. When Hermione stands up to Sirius it's actually supposed to be Ron standing up on his injured leg to protect his friend. The movies elevated Hermione and made Ron mostly comedic relief. The movies also overplay the potential love aspect of Harry and Hermione's relationship, they're supposed to be like brother and sister

In the late 1960s, Maggie Smith was arguably the most beautiful woman on Earth. Her film "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" is phenomenal acting. I had the privilege of seeing her on stage doing Shakespeare, and I've never recovered.

Funny thing about the actor that plays Draco (the blonde kid). From what I understand the actor that played him (Tom Felton) is one of the nicest and down-to-earth people you'll ever meet. LOL, love how Ash has the infinity for the Slytherin characters!

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with everyone in all of these threads and go with Ash being either a Ravenclaw or a Gryffindor.
-- Ravenclaw: He's observant, intelligent, excited about learning -- about a wide variety of things, their deeper meanings, and how they connect to other things and the bigger picture. Remember, he didn't even want to go back to the muggle world because he would be bored due to all the new and different things he learned and could learn in the magical realm.
-- Gryffindor: He's smart, brave, intrepid, and has a huge sense of humor, which he finds in places a lot of people wouldn't/don't.
Thinking Draco is confident and funny, liking Snape, and being interested in fame and glory doesn't make him a Slytherin.

Why did Hermione lie? Because she wanted friends, and she thought - correctly - that by putting her goody-two-shoes self in trouble to get R and H out of it, that they might respect her more. She was right.
That and she her whole life had to compensate in a harsh world whilst being a muggle born. Having to prove herself. And soon. Very soon she became a progeny of her entire generation. There's a reason why Harry has to live with the Dursleys which is never explained in the movies. It was explained in the 5th book I believe.
(Only read below if you want to know)
At the end of this movie, Dumbledore explains to Harry that when his mother sacrificed herself to save him, the love protection spell is what kept Harry alive when Voldemort tried to kill him. However, Dumbledore knew that Voldemort would find a way to return so Harry still needed protection. Dumbledore then proceeded to use a very powerful spell that extends that sacrificial love protection to Harry's last living blood relative, his Aunt Petuna who is his mother's older sister. Despite being a muggle, her blood was powerful enough to prevent Voldemort from harming Harry.

modern technology doesn’t work in the wizarding world, too much magical interference…also the reason both ron and hermione were placed in Gryffindor even though they are completely different “on the surface” is that the sorting hat looks for your most dominate character trait and the most important character trait for all Gryffindors is courage/bravery

To answer Hannah's theory on why the Dursleys don't want Harry to go to Hogwarts.
They treat him badly because they know he has the capability of magic powers, but they're afraid if he learns his full potential he'll get revenge on them

@@GenerationalDisappointment The books go into more details about the strained relationship between Harry’s aunt and his mother(her sister).They mistreat him because Petunia has always had a deep envy and resentment towards Lily for being born a witch and their parents praised their youngest daughter for it, which made her feel left out and feeling inadequate. When she was a young girl, she secretly wrote to Dumbledore begging to let her attend Hogwarts along with her sister, and while he kindly explained to her why she couldn’t attend, she was crushed and decided she wanted nothing to do with magic, wizards, or Lily ever again. She abused and neglected her own nephew because he was a constant reminder of his mother, her parents perceived favoritism, and the world she felt rejected by. His uncle on the other hand was simply a small minded bully who didn’t like anything remotely out of the ordinary.

I absolutely LOVED Ash's reactions throughout this whole video. He was so entertaining.
I think the reason these movies are so easy to get into is because we see everything and learn everything through Harry who is also learning everything at the same time we are! So we’re thrown in, but not into the deep end. More into the shallow end.
I love that Ash picked up on some of the iffy shit like the favoritism, which like when you're blowing through the books/movies as a kid you're like WHATEVER WOO LETS GO HARRY and then as an adult you're like hey that's kinda shitty. And rowling was DEFINITELY influenced by Tolkien, most modern fantasy was because he really set the bar for it. Annnnnnnd I do agree with Hannah, I do think it's important to say please and thank you to your partners etc no matter how long you've been together or what the mundane task is. I think it helps in the long run making each other feel appreciated :)

53:47 it's not really cringe because there is real magical technicality behind it. Dumbledore said that love saved Harry as just a more general explanation of his mother's sacrifice and how it worked. But in reality, there is a lot more to it, you'll see that later in the series
Watching Harry Potter through someone else's "first time" eyes is quite the experience 💗 Hannah was the representation of the nostalgia trip I was feeling. You two are the best!
Love is one of the prevailing themes of this entire series. You can say cringe all you want but this concept is vital to understanding the franchise. “Do not pity the dead. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love”.
Hope you two continue with the whole series. It just get so much “older” and “darker” as the series goes on. It’s bittersweet when u watch them all. U just want it to keep going
It's not all destiny with magic. Harry actually chose Gryffindor House even though the Sorting Hat was seriously considering Slytherin House. The hat let Harry's preference have the last word.
And they do get to pick their pets, Hagrid just picked Harry's for him as a birthday present.
I love how Ollivander's shop is reminiscent of old music stores, where you go back to find replacement reeds for your woodwinds or sets of drumsticks. I'm sure others can substitute the music store for something they grew up with long ago.
The store in my town was called SQUILLERS years ago, but after some letters fell off it became QUILL S with blank spaces where the E and R used to be. Everyone began calling it QUILLS and a few years later the owner actually moved the S to eliminate the space. It was a true odds and ends store with penny candy, electrical parts, TV tubes, and Army ration 5 ct cigarettes.

Just a little thing about the sorting hat:
It doesnt make the decission of the house alone.
There are multiple factors and one of the most important is the choice of the child.
The dialogue between harry and the hat happens with every child. Its just telepathic.
And if, like harry, a child says "not slytherin" it want send him slytherin.
The 4 houses represends the most cherrished attribute for each founder:
Gryffindor - bravery and loyalty
Slytherin - raw talent and a hunger for power(especially pure blooded wizzards)
Ravenclaw - knowledge and intelligence
Hufflepuff - strong work ethics and fairness
So, most children fits in more than one house.
Like hermine who is clearly as much ravenclaw as gryffendor.
Robbie Coltrane himself is 6 foot 1,but Hagrid is 8 foot 6,he's half giant and half human which is why he's so damn tall
I remember watching these as a child and having no clue what anything meant, just being amazed by it. What I would do now to watch them for the first time to actually be able to comprehend it. Makes me so emotional
Something they cut out of the movies (other than one character in particular that you meet in the second film) are house elves. They keep Hogwarts running in the background, cooking the meals, handling baggage and belongings, etc. They play a much bigger role in the book series and the wizarding world in general.

Heads up ASh, Every Fantasy book or movie is influenced by LOTR. HE literally created the genre.
The look of most wizards comes from Tolkein. The elderly man with a long white beard and pointy hat is basically Gandalf/Dumbeldore.
Tolkien got the idea of Gandalf from the Arthurian legends about Merlin. Tolkien didn't create the genre, he made it commercial.
Lotr is influenced by nordic mythology. So is Silmarillion and the rest. That means everything is influenced by nordic mythology.

@@denizkenger52 Its a mix of Nodric myth, Catholicism and his love for language. He may have also unknowingly be influenced by his time in the first world war tho he never mentioned it as a direct influence.
Also worth noting most of the time when you see elves in fantasy, elven language comes from Tolkien. He "invented" it and everyone just uses that. Pretty sure they use his elven language in the Witcher games.

Loved your reactions, so nice to see a Slytherin fan. There's a lot of bias towards the other houses, so it's cool to hear the hypocrisy called out. For an overly simplified sum up of the houses, Griffindor are brave, Slytherin are ambitious, Ravenclaw are bookworms, and Hufflepuff love everyone even if they were getting stabbed by them at the time.

This was the first Harry Potter movie I saw in theaters with my classmates a week after it's release and it was fun and adventurous! Then I saw Prisoner Of Azkaban and Goblet Of Fire years later, and Goblet and Azkaban are more darker than the first film.

Really liked the reaction. And I have to agree with Ash, I remember being so disappointed and annoyed (and still do) when they use the "power of friendship/love" trope. So I don't remember it completely and perfectly, but I think there was a better explanation for the "you defeated Voldemort because of love" bit. So as we know there are multiple types of magics in this world like, curses, charms, enchantments, transfiguration, etc. But a lesser known and more ancient type is sacrificial magic, which gets even stronger when it's done willingly. So when Lily (Harry's mom) willingly jumped before Harry to take the spell from Voldemort onto herself (willingly sacrificing herself for Harry) this triggered the sacrificial magic which put a very powerful protective spell on him from his attacker (Voldemort). This spell is still active, which is why Voldemort can't touch him in his current form. I hope this might be a little better and more satisfying answer to the "because of love" trope.
People might want to read the books afterwards. Don't spoil it so badly!

If they want to read the books afterwards then perhaps they should not read the comment section of a reaction channel about a series which has been released for years. And it's not like I'm spoiling a plot, a character, or any future events, I'm just clarifying the meaning behind "because of love".
As someone who hasn't read the books, but has seen the movies, I appreciate your clarification of this detail.

The concept you're talking about with the characters progressing with you (as in you're both clueless about the world within the story) is called the blank slate character. The main character is a blank slate of information; just like you. Neither you nor the character are aware of all the details of this new world you're experiencing so you experience it together. It allows you to be sucked in to the character and see yourself in their place. It's incredibly effective in engaging the viewer as the main character is seen as much more relatable. It's a common, but very effective trope, and I love it personally. Can't wait for both of your journeys through this series, it's one of my absolute favorites. Plus, the acting, production, and storylines get much better and more complex as the series goes on. So excited for the future reactions! All the best!
P.S. as for dressing up Hannah should be Hermione or Ginny Weasley and Ash should be snape, harry, or malfoy. That'd be hilarious!!

Every one of these movies just get better and better (there are 8 of them btw) as the kids get older the story and acting get better and better. If you jumped from the first movie straight to the last one you’d probably die of shock lol
