How Would You Save The Maldives? (The 7 Choices)
The Maldives, 2119 - in the Indian Ocean. Children play on the streets, as worshipers enter the city mosque for their morning prayer. Fresh fruit & vegetable stands line the alleyways, as nearby fishermen with their buckets of entrails gut their morning catch on the sidewalk. This is the city of Malé, the capital of the Maldives, and in 2119 (aside from some advanced architecture) it appears life in the Maldives isn’t so different from a hundred years earlier.
But the closer you look, the more you may miss, because you should in fact be looking from afar - far back enough to see that the nation of islands, formerly known as the Maldives, has actually long been evacuated. In place, a nation of oil rigs - because this is the NEW Maldives...

Such quality videos :’)
Kento is my dad
I'm from Maldives. I've lived here all my life and its scary to think that everything I've ever known will be under water in a relatively short time. It all sounds like some sort of sci-fi movie. But it's not, its real, its a very real future that me and future generations of Maldivians will have to deal with. Over the realitively short period of time I've been alive I can see the effects of climate change already. The ocean is coming.
Anyway, I found the video real interesting, waiting for part 2 :v

Sure you will. Im from Malè.
I'm a maldivian, just saying that this information might be outdated, but I could be wrong. Yeah ignore my name, its fake. Like everything on the Internet.
Essentially the point about getting the tether funding by renting islands for long periods of time, was known as the SEZ (Special Economic Zone if I'm not mistaken) bill which was heavily criticised by the people as it gave near sovereign authority similar to embassies, and not merely the rights of private property ownership. And then we heard about that leasing the island to a saudi prince for 99 years deal. Naturally this irked locals as it felt our government was selling our land. Our people are, unfortunately at least Gen Z and older are not as educated at least on current world issues. They are not savages or anything, simply that there is a lack of awareness about how global warming is a threat to us despite Nasheed's best efforts during his regime. They are more of a minding their own everyday lives kind of people. It probably didn't help that the president at the time, the one after Nasheed and the coup vice Waheed, President Yameen elected in 2013, is known for money laundering and corruption. There's even an Al Jazeera report on it, can't recall the name at the time. So naturally they felt it was to line their own pockets, and before this video, I thought the same. I still have doubts about Yameen committing any acts of altruism but perhaps, who knows. I suppose it might not even be altruism. Single-handedly masterminding a plan to save the nation would have all of his shady deeds erased and raised to near saint status.
I digress. Long story short, said Yameen, the man negotitating that deal, lost in the September 2018 elections, to Solih, who is a member of Nasheed's party, and I would say a loyalist. Earlier this month, they have also as a single party, obtained supermajority in the Parliament with around 67 out of 82 overall members. Yameen is being investigated on counts of corruption and money laundering, and the current government has promised to undo many of the legislation and investigate Yameens actions in power. So I suppose it's back to Nasheed's solution now, and while back in 2008 he was being held back by the opposition controlling the Parliament. But that's not the situation anymore. The opposition has essentially been eradicated simply because of how tyrannical yameen was. Nasheed's party has essentially annexed up the key political figures of a lot of the parties before. He can set up a dictatorship if he wants at this point. I would say he is a good individual, but I also don't agree that so much power should be at the hands of one party. The opposition exists to keep things in check. There's no accountability if we trust them to regulate themselves.
*PENIS.*
If only i had enough money to go live at the maldives i would have been a teacher then. Now i am an old bald ass man that cant help you guys
Every single political person in Maldives has corrupted, even Nasheed to some point. I never particularly liked him or his party Heck i remember stuff being expensive and riots increasing during his time. And of course we people of F.Atoll were not going to give it to the Saudis. Its my home. Its where I lived. And to see that home, being turned into a resort is just... wrong.

Solutions #2 and #4 have been done before to great success. One example is Galveston, Texas; prior to the Great Hurricane of 1900, Galveston was in a similar position to the Maldives, a major port city sometimes called "The New York of the Gulf", but with its highest point resting only about 8ft above sea level. Storm surges from the hurricane were easily able to flood the entire city, briefly joining the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay while completely destroying the city and resulting in the loss of 6,000-12,000 lives, still the deadliest storm in US history. After the hurricane, the decision was made to build a seawall along the Gulf coast and raise the island as much as 15ft above its original elevation. What few buildings survived the storm were jacked up and landfill was poured behind the concrete wall. The results were seen when in 1915 another hurricane of almost equal strength to the 1900 storm struck Galveston, and while severe damage was still done, the city was not annihilated and only 53 lives were lost in Galveston proper, still tragic but well below the thousands killed by the 1900 storm. Ironically though, the construction of the seawall ended up costing Galveston its status as Texas' premier port; much of the earth used to raise the island came from the construction of what would become the Houston Ship Channel, a massive canal that allowed freighters and especially oil tankers to come inland directly to warehouses, refineries, and rail links rather than needing to offload their cargo in relatively out-of-the-way Galveston. Today, the city stands as a sleepy seaside resort town and cruise ship terminal, still fun for a weekend visit, but a far cry from the bustling metropolis it was before the 1900 storm.
Option 7 looks amazing

Hey, I actually thought about this and came up with an idea. They can build skyscrapers in Malé and decades later when the water rises, the lower floors of the buildings will be submerged, and the city will become something like Venice, where you navigate through tiny canals and boats instead of road and cars. The ruins underwater can be made a tourism resource.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people here seem to have a preconceived idea that Maldivians aren’t really fluent in English and we have a lack of awareness in general regarding various areas. We have a solid educational system that teaches us English as a second language and some schools even offer to teach English as a first language. We have subjects like literature, history etc... We have Igcse, gcse and edexcel based educational systems as well. This is the era of the internet, where everyone has excess to everything just a click away. We are well informed on worldly news and yes just as everyone else we use social media apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook etc We have Netflix, we watch anime, we read novels and we watch series/movies. I hope you get the gist of what I’m trying to say here 😂 I get that we are a small nation compared to others and people seem to be misinformed and stereotypical as we are all “islanders” Mental health awareness is also a stepping stone for us just as any other country due to the fact that older generations had a hard time embracing sth they regarded as abnormal and embarrassing. I hope this gave you a different perspective regarding Maldivians and you guys should definitely visit our beautiful resorts here once the pandemic calms down.
Am proud to see that the comment that bought most awareness to some misconceptions about us on here in the most informative way that I've seen so far in this comment section is from a weeb.

The education system could be better from my experience.
