So about the Dutch and French border, there are a couple of things you missed out on which also explains the situation a little more. The border is technically not with the country of the Netherlands but just with the Kingdom of the Netherlands which the country of the Netherlands is also part of but also a couple other nations. This also explains why Saint maarten (the Dutch one) isn't part of Europe, since this is an independent island state only being part of the monarchy. Hence their use of a different coin and the extra border patrol.
"like this one, that the British still decided to claim and build something on anyway" describes pretty much every place in the world, please be more specific
Britians the worst of all May I know "every place in the world" except UK, Russia, France, Portugal, China, US, España, and pretty much west europe except luxembourg, switzerland and liechenstein cause nobody cares about them??
The point of that rock is that it was the building site for the eddystone lighthouse which was made to help prevent shipwrecks so it did actually serve a very important purpose not just a random example of colonialism, plus also it's a few miles from the uk and in the uk's international waters so not very colonial seeing as it is literally part of British territory
As a citizen from Southern Cyprus it's not as bad as he makes it sound, we can go through British territory whenever we want but if something happens it's up to the British police to decide what happens, that's just it. About northern Cyprus we can go there through Nicosia which is the capital city by showing our ID.
I'm glad that you mentioned us La Hispaniola and you handled it pretty good. I would like to add something though: although we, Dominican Republic, might be "10x richer than Haiti" remember we're still a underdeveloped country, with most areas being very poor, some very so that no one from a first world country could even imagine. So yeah, our hatian brothers have it much worse unfortunately, and compared to them this sounds like a rich country, but we're not... At all.
I remember watching his video on Haiti vs the Dominican republic and being shocked at him saying that the Dominican side was rich. I've been to that country... I helped pour concrete floors for people so that they wouldn't get diseases from sleeping in the dirt. I guess if Dominica is considered "rich" then that should really be an eye opener for how underdeveloped most of the world really is. Though, I wonder if wealth is just spread unevenly? I've heard that the country has tons of luxury resorts and wouldn't be surprised if there are isolated pockets of tourist money surrounded by poverty. Would make the country look rich on paper but not in practice.
The Dutch side of Saint Martin is an independent country that is part of the kingdom of the Netherlands. It is more similar to Canada and the UK in that they share the same Royal family.
Not at all! Dutch SXM residents hold dutch passports. 8:26 It's not about national pride, and there never was any argument between Finland and Sweden about the border. It's about international treaties, since Åland island are demilitarized zone. Bureaucracy was mainly the issue. Citizens of both Finland and Sweden can move freely without passports between borders and live and work in both countries without permissions, and there's no border control between them.
Its quite funny about the island of Märket. The name just means "The Mark" And the reason for the strange border is so none of the countries would have to change their size and shores. It would just be to much paperwork for something insignificant. Both countries actually wanted some form of sign/lighthouse on the island but Finland just did it first... on the wrong side but in the best position.
I don't get why foreigners make a deal about that..? Take a look at the two territories. Which one would be called Northern Ireland and which one would have been called Southern Ireland? Do you think the Republic should be renamed Northern Ireland because of a random bit of Donegal going more north than the Causeway coast?
Just call it Ulster, rename the country to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ulster and voila, no more long name Northern Ireland. Everybody wins. No controversy whatsoever.
@@Yamezzzz I don't think that anyone's "making a deal" about this; it's just an interesting 'factoid'. (And not all that uncommon - e.g., in the U.S., Virginia extends farther West than West Virginia.)

@Will I Am because people imply that without European interference, the rest of the world would have no issues with borders and everyone would be coexisting in absolute harmony with their neighbors
@Will I Am The moment other countries inherited spoils of imperial conquest of other countries and didn’t give it up. It became their problem. Like how is that European problem that people from Java don’t want to release other islands in their empire? That’s no longer Dutch problem. Brazilians don’t want to give back Amazon to native tribes. That’s no longer Portuguese problem. Syria and Egypt joined together. And that Syrians bailed out because they felt like Egyptians were treating them bad. . So clearly countries are free to give up territories with some disgruntled minorities that want to be independent. And they are free to join together to greater greater whole. Nobody is holding gun to Nigeria telling it has to own that oil rich land with tribes that want to be independent from Nigeria. . Every single post-colonial border is there because those who profit from it like it that way. Which makes it their problem. They don’t want to give up their possession.

We just opted to protect our elderly, which is good because we owe our elderly for building the nation to what it is today. The scars of war are still visible and we just couldn't ignore the most vulnerable during this pandemic and we felt that our approach was the right thing to do for them.

Well that was a few months ago
I always figured that Märket's zig-zag border was a case of "no change in territory: less paperwork". We don't have genuine disputes in Northern Europe; we have friendly hassles.
slight correction: they built a bridge between both halves of Brunei
Wait actually?
@@EBGamez1 Yes. The part of the bridge that crosses water is about 9 miles long. The total length is about twice that. Despite what the video suggests, the existing boat service doesn't have to travel a massive distance to connect the two halves.
Eric Amick thanks (can you use kilometres instead of miles next time btw please?)

The thing about the checkpoints in St. Martin isn’t really true, they basically just let you cross
And, while the official currencies are as stated in the video (Netherlands Antilles guilders and euros in the Dutch and French sides, respectively), US dollars are accepted everywhere throughout St. Martin.
There were absolutely zero border controls between the French and Dutch sides when we were there in 2016
Signs only. No border controls between the two sides of St. Martin.

1:55 there’s actually a sea bridge connecting the Two parts of Brunei... no need to fly or cross Malaysia
"like this one, that the British still decided to claim and build something on anyway" describes pretty much every place in the world, please be more specific
Britians the worst of all
May I know "every place in the world" except UK, Russia, France, Portugal, China, US, España, and pretty much west europe except luxembourg, switzerland and liechenstein cause nobody cares about them??
The point of that rock is that it was the building site for the eddystone lighthouse which was made to help prevent shipwrecks so it did actually serve a very important purpose not just a random example of colonialism, plus also it's a few miles from the uk and in the uk's international waters so not very colonial seeing as it is literally part of British territory

Basically my life as someone who lives up north. Everytime I'm asked where I live online I just go "eEEeEEeeEhhhh"
I would like to add something though:
although we, Dominican Republic, might be "10x richer than Haiti" remember we're still a underdeveloped country, with most areas being very poor, some very so that no one from a first world country could even imagine.
Check your info
Also there is no checkpoints at the border since you can cross it as much as you want without control, pretty much like enter in NJ from NY.
Last thing, despite not being official, the US dollar is by far the most used on the island
Two words: cruise ships.
Sint Maarten is a major cruise port. When you get off the ship, everyone speaks English and takes USD.

@@Takkion As a finn, I agree with u (:
8:26 It's not about national pride, and there never was any argument between Finland and Sweden about the border. It's about international treaties, since Åland island are demilitarized zone. Bureaucracy was mainly the issue. Citizens of both Finland and Sweden can move freely without passports between borders and live and work in both countries without permissions, and there's no border control between them.
Its quite funny about the island of Märket.
The name just means "The Mark"
And the reason for the strange border is so none of the countries would have to change their size and shores.
It would just be to much paperwork for something insignificant.
Both countries actually wanted some form of sign/lighthouse on the island but Finland just did it first... on the wrong side but in the best position.
When the most northern part of Ireland is much north than the entire "Northern Ireland"....
I don't get why foreigners make a deal about that..? Take a look at the two territories. Which one would be called Northern Ireland and which one would have been called Southern Ireland?
Do you think the Republic should be renamed Northern Ireland because of a random bit of Donegal going more north than the Causeway coast?
It would be more correct to call it North-Eastern but that's odd
Just call it Ulster, rename the country to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ulster and voila, no more long name Northern Ireland. Everybody wins. No controversy whatsoever.
@@Yamezzzz I don't think that anyone's "making a deal" about this; it's just an interesting 'factoid'. (And not all that uncommon - e.g., in the U.S., Virginia extends farther West than West Virginia.)
@@MustraOrdo you cant call it Ulster, because there are two counties of Ulster that are a part of the Republic of Ireland. Not all of Ulster is Northern Ireland.

Strange island borders: exist
Everyone: blame the Europeans
*english
@Will I Am true
@Will I Am because people imply that without European interference, the rest of the world would have no issues with borders and everyone would be coexisting in absolute harmony with their neighbors
So we should blame the Bosniaks or Albamians for post-colonial problems, eh?
