      Brilliant is going to put Universities out of business eventually. Literally anybody on the internet, if they wanted to, could receive a college education at less than a fraction of the cost!
      That being said, the problem with linking Europe to North Africa, by way of the Mediterranean, is damn near impossible to even think about doing. Even if you know all of the math, geography, and science, required for such a construction to even be more than a "daydream," no one with burnable income will really want to do it, because the Mediterranean Sea is one of the world's most ACTIVE geological fault-systems (almost as active as the Pacific Rim, when you look at the sheer number of earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, that have happened in the Med, in the past 100 years alone)!
      In short, even if you could get a tunnel/bridge built in one of these two proposed areas... it wouldn't last very long. And any loss of life during a major seismic event would be CATASTROPHIC! In short, boats already make transition between the two continents normal, and feasible. They are far safer for casual travelers. And they just make financially, economically, and scientifically, a billion times more sense!
      Tunneling the Mediterranean is a fantasy. It will never be anything more than that. Besides, in about a thousand years, Europe and Africa will be connected above sea-level anyway, when Morocco slams into the southern tip of Spain, after a massive catastrophic Earthquakes squishes the two continents together.
      So really... all mankind as to do is WAIT...

Onlu way into Alaska is via Canada; Hawai'i is dead center in the ocean; Puerto Rico is in the Carribean surrounded by a numerous chain of islands, so saying Sicily with mainland Italy is the correct way of explaining things

    I think it would be feasible to build damn/reclaim land at that ~300m deep ~25km part of the ocean, it would be robust enough to not be effected by earthquakes to dangerous levels, and would also give a protection from rising sea levels, and it should cost similarly as tunnel or bridges because of cheaper material and easier construction, and mediterranean sea would be usable as big water battery if there was ever a need. There was even a crazy proposal before of building a damn and draining part of the sea to reclaim land, but it was scraped because of obvious reasons.

    After the migration crises in 2015 it's fair to say any potential bridge (even if economic and engineering sides are met) just wouldn't sit well with the citizens of Southern Europe. Spain, Italy and Greece already struggle with undocumented migrants, a majority of which get through via short crossings from North Africa. Why would any functional and responsible government ever consider linking up with such a region?
    As stated in the video, there really isnt any economic advantage to such a bridge, meaning the transportation of people in one direction would be the principle purpose.

    • @MysteriousFigure
      @MysteriousFigure 3 года назад +2

      well, that and the fact that one of the 2 bridges would have many diplomatic tensions to deal with (i.e. Gibraltar and Spain, even if the tunnel does not go through Gibraltar itself, they have territorial waters, and Morroco and Spain, due to Ceuta and Melilla), so your only option would be to try and build between Italy and Tunisia in what is a massively busy shipping channel.

      I highly doubt a bridge or tunnel between Africa and Europe would make much difference to illegal immigration. Migration control on a bridge or tunnel is relatively easy - there is a single point of exit. It would almost certainly still be far easier, and more cost-effective, for people smugglers to pile people onto old boats and make the trip over the Mediterranean.

      That is an issue with every single tunnel going under water.
      Funnily, I don't think it has ever actually happened. Not on a proper road. That's because they try to prevent things like that from happening, and they have pumps to pump out any water that does seep in.
      I have many times driven through a tunnel that goes about 200 meters below sea level. I have never worried about water there.

    Here is an idea on how to deal with the depth at Gibraltar. Only dig deep enough to avoid problems with surface traffic, waves, etc. Then connect the two ends with a "floating" tunnel. It would need shock absorption and expansion joints at the ends, but the main section would be shielded from the worst of the shaking of earthquakes. It would probably also need cables and buoyancy control to properly control its position. Even with these requirements, it seems much easier than either tunneling all the way under or building a bridge over the straights. So engineers, is there some major problem I am overlooking?

  • @nilsdock
    @nilsdock 3 года назад

    a submerged floating anchored tunnel would be a solution to avoid seismic problems, shock absorbers could be in the cables and the tunnel could "snake" a little bit to allow for a variable distance between continents.
