I live in HK. I think of my grandma when i watch this video. She’s well over 90 now. When she was younger, she worked in the field and as you can imagine, it’s very hard work. Before the pandemic, she used to go to the park downstairs every morning to exercise. Many people in the neighbourhood know her. Due to the pandemic, she can’t go exercise anymore. I feel so bad for her because there isnt much physical activities she can do and she doesn’t get to see other people as often. I occasionally play mahjong with her too because it’s fun and it does keep her sharp. She used to go to tea houses with us but now again with the pandemic, it’s not possible. I’m quite worried about her being stuck at home all the time and sitting the whole day.

Just like Singapore is only polluted when smog from palm-oil production in Indonesia and Malaysia drift over the city, once every year or so, yet it gets labelled as heavily polluted :/
I feel you, but it is true, the wind is coming from the mainland and is polluting our air. I have the asthma to prove it. When the wind comes from the Philipines, the air is clear, hence why the air is so clear before a typhoon.
Yes we have the best healthcare in the whole wold and how accessible is it and how cheap it is. But the one point is that if you want to see a doctor in a public hospital you may have to wait from 4-8 hours a day. That happens to me every time we don’t have enough doctors and not enough beds in our hospital that’s the only downside
Universal healthcare wouldn’t work on a global scale. Medicine takes billions of dollars to produce. If all get that medication for free or at subsidized rate, there is no initiative to produce it.
I was born in Hong Kong (but no longer live there). I find this video very interesting, informative, and surprisingly insightful for someone who doesn't live there. Hong Kong's pollution is indeed terrible and the living condition of the majority of the population is extremely substandard. Yet the long life expectancy is indeed legendary. I myself couldn't figure out why. But I believe you've provided a pretty insightful analysis.
I think you're missing one of the most important and obvious reason of the long life expectancy in HK -- look at how small the city is, a hospital is never very far away. For acute life threatening conditions, e.g. strokes, heart attacks, prompt hospitalization is vital for saving the patient.
Sure it can be think of it as part of accessibility and the author mentioned one reason which is universal health care, hence I brought up the time to hospital issue which is a reason not mentioned in the video.
I am sure that Hong Kong is one of the most blessed places on earth, far from earthquakes and volcanoes, far from political instability (at the moment), with great natural harbours and hills, and with great institution. I am feeling so lucky that I was born in Hong Kong.
cant wait to see how the global age increases with electric cars especially in norway with 51% of total cars being electric in fact, i would love a vid about this somehow

urf808 some are gaing ( other are losing to competitors by them now being less competative now with higher c02 levels. C02 are also not so great for us( global warming and climate change). Eletric cars really wont do anything about life expectancy( their purpose is to move peolpe around not increase age).
electric cars won't help if the electricity is fossil-fired. switching to nuclear and renewables all round would have a far, far greater impact on the environment and our health.
I was born in Hong Kong. My parents came to Hong Kong in the 70s, and they are the most resilient people I know. It's insane how hard working they are. They redefine the term "hard-working".
我都係香港人,條片整得好好。 +FarisTheKuepow Not all of us are anti-Chinese but we have started to emerge a new mix of Western and Chinese culture among teenagers and they like to call themselves 'Hongkongers' which is not wrong
Ayyyy! From HK here! Maybe its the tea, soup and love for choisum/kai lan (steamed green veggies). Also, the healthcare system is quite flawed due to a shortage of doctors, nurses and medical staff. But the government ensures a basic, free healthcare & dental checkup from kindergarten to grade 9 (if you go to public school)
The foggy condition in Hong Kong shown in the video is not due to pollution, but simply humidity. Hong Kong is highly humid and surrounded by tropical forest mountains. When sun rises in the morning, the heat evaporates the water vapour trapped in the forest and hence forming a thick fog which is mostly water. Hong Kong itself produces very little pollution as there is virtually no factories in its territory and Hong Kong has the highest public transport usage in the world (90% of all trips are made on public transports). Hong Kong does suffer from air pollution but mainly in the winter when the wind blows from the north, bringing pollution from China into Hong Kong. But this problem has improved a lot in recent years as Southern China is transforming from low cost manufacturing into hi-tech innovative industry.
coming from a hong kong resident hong kong is not that polluted as mainland china but i totally agree that hong kong has a long life expectancy a lot of old people in hong kong maybe even more than teenagers and children
Donald trump and Rich piana ya a lot of Hong ppl living space r really small to nothing. Cuz land is very important and expensive to HK. But maybe that's why ppl work so hard to get a good grades and work hard to get money to get a home
Donald trump and Rich piana not true at all. The current government is to blame for high property prices and low availablity of public housing, due to uncontrolled immigration from mainland China and lack of projects being built/ redeveloped. This is an issue that has emerged in the last 10-20 years SINCE the British left.
I'm born in Hong Kong and you really nailed the pronunciation of the city :P Also pollution has been reduced actually. in the 70s and 80s, HK had a lot more industries that contributed to pollution. That's gone now. All that remain are ones from mainland that gets blown over. But even mainland China is lowering pollution due to decreasing factories and trying to use renewable energy sources.
Aah you finally have a video just about Hong Kong!!! As a hong konger, I'm truly happy about it. But Hong Kong isn't always as foggy as the pictures you've shown in this video. Anyways, good job!
As a Hong konger with my parents also hongkongers, I think the Chinese medicine aspect is also very popular over here. Not only is Qigong popular, but also regular massages from professionals to open up on acupunture points
Quite an interesting analysis Hong Kong life expectancy, I myself been to HK last month for a uni field trip and I was thinking to move over there someday to see what's it like, it's probably my favourite places to visit.
I am from Singapore and when I go to HK what I notice is to get around you have to walk a lot more than here. Certain parts of the city is very hilly too, compared to the flatness we have. The Cantonese are famous for herbal soups and tonics. The last point in a very interesting one, it hadn't occur to me.
As a Hongkonger, thank you for making this video. In response to your video, my city can be polluted, since HK is densely populated, so all those smog or particulates can easily accumulate in the urban areas. Yet, I believe that HK is far from being one of the most polluted cities in the world. In fact, the air quality has been improving over the years. Also, if you compare HK to some Chinese industrial cities or Indian cities, you can clearly see that HK is very “clean”.
Very true. I went to Macau and Hong Kong just a few weeks ago and people walk more there. But you can also ride buses. But you can do everything and go everywhere just by walking.
18:15 East Germans Crossings over to the west for opportunities . They were "skilled labourours" who were were paid by the west to DO SO . In the East , everybody were considiered equal . However it was not so in the west . So it attracted "skilled labourours" to the other sides as they were paid by the damn West . Also , if we look at a map , we can see that the FRG got the portion that had historically more cities and was richer while the GDR got the portion of Germany that was not only devasted by the Soviets but also historically the poorer and the Breadbasket region of Germany . It is actually impressive that the East , despite having disadvantages, had a higher growth rate than the West . Otherwise , the people in the GDR had no problem . It was the people who would have a higher status if they were in a kapitalist society who "escaped" .
Thanks for researching into my city, really appreciated. This actually surprised me, a lot. It makes me think that Culture plays a huge role of life expectancy. 1 extra thing is that people in Asia normally sees health as a big thing. Soup (it is not really a soup.....It's more like a juice or some sort) plays a huge role for health, because it's basically Chinese medicine but basically tastes 10 times better. However, it makes me feel bad that other stuffs such as political system, educational system, etc. are a huge mess. Otherwise, people in there will live much longer :/
The determination factor may just prove Hong Kong's top status as a temporary one. Unless, of course, their descendants have...let's just say, other reasons to remain determined.
I am from Hong Kong and I've also lived in Beijing for 5 years and Shenzhen for 10+years. I would say that Hong Kong is far less polluted compared to most cities in mainland China.
My grandparents came to Hong Kong when they were around 10 years old. When they registered for their ID here, they have lied about their age and said they were 14-16, so that they will be permitted to work. Both of them passed few years ago with their official dying age few years older than their actual.
Nice pronunciation of 香港! As an Asian who often watches English RUclips videos, I was often bothered by how English-speaking RUclipsrs tend to mispronounce Chinese or Japanese names. I'm glad that you're not one of them. Also, it's nice that you paid attention to the "fragrant harbour" contradiction. In fact, when HK people complain about how the city is deteriorating, they often say that the government "turn the fragrant harbour into a stinky harbour" (搞到香港變臭港).
Its a torture to have a long life in nowadays hk. One can not imagine to have their life end up in the eldery home in hk where people are treated as animal.
Fellow Hong Konger here, and I would say your analysis is quite accurate. However, on the "Social Support" criteria, as far as I can tell, there are quite a few senior citizens living alone in their old homes because their sons and daughters just chose to give up their parents simply because the stress of working in Hong Kong is very high. Other than that, great video! Hope you're proud to have Hong Kong in your heritage! (Although the politics is just a mess right now and who knows what's goin' to happen after 2047)

I feel you, but it is true, the wind is coming from the mainland and is polluting our air. I have the asthma to prove it. When the wind comes from the Philipines, the air is clear, hence why the air is so clear before a typhoon.
Not really, the city of Shenzhen in mainland China next to Hong Kong is less polluted than Hong Kong.
Lovely video
Yours Truly your reply has literally nothing to do with this comment lmao
That last point made me cry. It's so humbling to be reminded of what people will go through just to live free lives.
Same here, I'm a Hong Konger and I waited two hours after I got hit by a car four years ago, that says a lot.
Go Hong Kong!! 🇭🇰 I’m proud to live here!
Edit : and yes I’m Asian
Me too
Im half asian
Am from Hong Kong man
Healthcare for everyone is so important.
agreed........ that's not even a debate, in all countries with universal healthcare, life expectancy is higher
Health and heducation are priceless. It is the most important.
The debate lays on how this heathcare should (or not) be paid.
Bobbius Shadow Germany lol
Universal healthcare wouldn’t work on a global scale. Medicine takes billions of dollars to produce. If all get that medication for free or at subsidized rate, there is no initiative to produce it.

I was born in Hong Kong (but no longer live there). I find this video very interesting, informative, and surprisingly insightful for someone who doesn't live there. Hong Kong's pollution is indeed terrible and the living condition of the majority of the population is extremely substandard. Yet the long life expectancy is indeed legendary. I myself couldn't figure out why. But I believe you've provided a pretty insightful analysis.
flyingzone go to 重慶,you ain’t seeing the real shit yet.
Went there before, next stop Beijing, wish me luck.
Actually, there is a more important factor that you have forgotten: they have to pay off their mortgages (before they die) by working for Li Ka Shing
Damm kento the points are on point? Great video!
I think you're missing one of the most important and obvious reason of the long life expectancy in HK -- look at how small the city is, a hospital is never very far away. For acute life threatening conditions, e.g. strokes, heart attacks, prompt hospitalization is vital for saving the patient.
I would have embedded that criteria into "Accessibility", just my opinion though.
Sure it can be think of it as part of accessibility and the author mentioned one reason which is universal health care, hence I brought up the time to hospital issue which is a reason not mentioned in the video.
He mentioned it
Except this somehow has not affected the average lifespan of other major cities as much
I am sure that Hong Kong is one of the most blessed places on earth, far from earthquakes and volcanoes, far from political instability (at the moment), with great natural harbours and hills, and with great institution. I am feeling so lucky that I was born in Hong Kong.

cant wait to see how the global age increases with electric cars
especially in norway with 51% of total cars being electric
in fact, i would love a vid about this somehow
Mauri QHD - Try ...actually you got it wrong. The more C02 in the atmosphere, the more trees grow,. The more trees grow the more oxygen is produced. So using more C02 actually helps the trees grow. What scientist does tell everyone that all forest around the world are gaining and growing becuase of C02 emmisions

urf808 some are gaing ( other are losing to competitors by them now being less competative now with higher c02 levels. C02 are also not so great for us( global warming and climate change). Eletric cars really wont do anything about life expectancy( their purpose is to move peolpe around not increase age).
urf808 Any benefit to trees is negated by pollution and logging. And C02 isn't the only thing made by vehicles
electric cars won't help if the electricity is fossil-fired. switching to nuclear and renewables all round would have a far, far greater impact on the environment and our health.
I was born in Hong Kong. My parents came to Hong Kong in the 70s, and they are the most resilient people I know. It's insane how hard working they are. They redefine the term "hard-working".
THANK YOU for pronouncing Hong Kong in Cantonese but not mandarin

Hhhh sad for Chinese peeps but good for Cantonese peeps
Cantonese people are still Chinese..
My friends talk of Hong Kong like its some kind of paradise when it comes to food there. after watching this video makes me want to take a trip there.
Quite weird for Hongkonger to watch thisssss
But good one bento
hongkongers walking more than any other places(mrt or bus walking is must) ,that keep them more healthy.
Hongkonger? Wtf
@faris never heard about it? the hong kong localist groups are growing. you will hear more about it, we are hongkonger, instead of chinese
我都係香港人,條片整得好好。
+FarisTheKuepow Not all of us are anti-Chinese but we have started to emerge a new mix of Western and Chinese culture among teenagers and they like to call themselves 'Hongkongers' which is not wrong
hongkongers gather!
My uncle is Japanese and is about 70 years old but still strong
Honestly you deserve more subscribers! Great video :)

Your videos are such high quality, I love watching them!
Nice pronunciation of 香港。I appreciate it.😀
And I gotta say your pronunciation of Hong Kong in Cantonese was by far the best I've heard from someone who (I think) is not Cantonese
coming from a hong kong resident hong kong is not that polluted as mainland china but i totally agree that hong kong has a long life expectancy a lot of old people in hong kong maybe even more than teenagers and children
Roderick_playz It is true.
When the Birth Rate and the Death Rate drop, it causes a aging population.
Donald trump and Rich piana ya a lot of Hong ppl living space r really small to nothing. Cuz land is very important and expensive to HK. But maybe that's why ppl work so hard to get a good grades and work hard to get money to get a home
Donald trump and Rich piana and working that hard might mean longer life expectancy
Donald trump and Rich piana not true at all. The current government is to blame for high property prices and low availablity of public housing, due to uncontrolled immigration from mainland China and lack of projects being built/ redeveloped. This is an issue that has emerged in the last 10-20 years SINCE the British left.
TheAmazingWorld OfVidhi if you live on the island it's expensive but if u live somewhere else it's pretty cheap
I'm born in Hong Kong and you really nailed the pronunciation of the city :P
Also pollution has been reduced actually. in the 70s and 80s, HK had a lot more industries that contributed to pollution. That's gone now. All that remain are ones from mainland that gets blown over. But even mainland China is lowering pollution due to decreasing factories and trying to use renewable energy sources.

Same but maybe a doge
I'm still moving to Japan for anime.
Aah you finally have a video just about Hong Kong!!! As a hong konger, I'm truly happy about it. But Hong Kong isn't always as foggy as the pictures you've shown in this video. Anyways, good job!
The most important reason is HK is small and the hospitals are near and the ambulance service is fast and free.
You forgot the wait time for the emergency room. Currently this is the only major problem with HK healthcare.
6:05 No wonder why I hate smokers despite living out of HK for more than half a decade.

That life expectancy is going to plummet as soon as hong kong is returned to China for good
Why? Which of these factors would change if Hong Kong's autonomy ended?
I am from Singapore and when I go to HK what I notice is to get around you have to walk a lot more than here. Certain parts of the city is very hilly too, compared to the flatness we have. The Cantonese are famous for herbal soups and tonics. The last point in a very interesting one, it hadn't occur to me.
Wow I never realized this! Very educational
Quality and sharp delivery. Very well done. Kudos to you and your team.
Thank you for the free 2 months of Skillshare, Kento Bento! Subbed!
Yay
This is VERY GOOD CONTENT, I wish TV had been like that when I was younger.
18:15
East Germans Crossings over to the west for opportunities .
Its probably gone down a bit from the recent protests sadly.
Otherwise, people in there will live much longer :/
why such quality videos have such less views? WHY? This channel is so underrated.
One reason Hong Kongers live longer is cause they have determination.
*Frisk wants to know your location*
*Frisk found your location*
FINALLLYYYYYY!!!!! Ive been looking for a video about HK's life expectancy for so long XD
6:10
*chuckles* I'm in danger.
Once again a very interesting video!
I like the style of your videos :)
The determination factor may just prove Hong Kong's top status as a temporary one. Unless, of course, their descendants have...let's just say, other reasons to remain determined.
What a beautiful video! Super interesting! Love the edits too!
Learning Cantonese and planning my life span trip to Hong Kong ? Yep
most people know English too, especially the younger generation.
@@andersyu4464
Because schools are legally required to teach English in HK. Do not expect perfect grammar though.
I am from Hong Kong and I've also lived in Beijing for 5 years and Shenzhen for 10+years. I would say that Hong Kong is far less polluted compared to most cities in mainland China.
proud of being a hong kongese

The last fact is very true, both my parents and their family came down to Hong Kong from China. Their very grateful for that
Aye! I’m from Macau!
All the 4 top city/countries have only red and white in their flags. Ironic.
Yes! Hong Kong has the best food! I call it food paradise.
it makes sense, they may live in a big air polluted city, but their other qualities in life is so much higher. Value family and your own health.
I didn't expect that....
Living in HK for 6 years now. Love this place!
You should also explain where do hong kong get all those pollution from
Stanley King - marine/air traffics, density and weather.
nearby Guangzhou/Shenzen, plus the coal plants. cars probably make up a very small percentage of the air pollution.
Most pollutants in Hong Kong are from mainland China.
If you can make it in Hong Kong, you can make it anywhere
Europe, Australia (Continent), East Asia and North America are the best regions in the world
CRIS WTF 34 the content which Australia is on is called Oceania
Why tho
My grandparents came to Hong Kong when they were around 10 years old. When they registered for their ID here, they have lied about their age and said they were 14-16, so that they will be permitted to work. Both of them passed few years ago with their official dying age few years older than their actual.
"Live long and prosper"
Nice pronunciation of 香港! As an Asian who often watches English RUclips videos, I was often bothered by how English-speaking RUclipsrs tend to mispronounce Chinese or Japanese names. I'm glad that you're not one of them.
Also, it's nice that you paid attention to the "fragrant harbour" contradiction. In fact, when HK people complain about how the city is deteriorating, they often say that the government "turn the fragrant harbour into a stinky harbour" (搞到香港變臭港).
Kento Bento's location according to his google account is Hong Kong.
Any Cantonese Hong Kong peeps here?
Guess I'm dying young, lol
Great video man, this was a very interesting topic!!
Its a torture to have a long life in nowadays hk. One can not imagine to have their life end up in the eldery home in hk where people are treated as animal.
not just a walkable city,it's also super hilly. which makes walking a legit exercise.
This video is quite accurate describing my home except the smoking part 🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰
Fellow Hong Konger here, and I would say your analysis is quite accurate. However, on the "Social Support" criteria, as far as I can tell, there are quite a few senior citizens living alone in their old homes because their sons and daughters just chose to give up their parents simply because the stress of working in Hong Kong is very high. Other than that, great video! Hope you're proud to have Hong Kong in your heritage! (Although the politics is just a mess right now and who knows what's goin' to happen after 2047)
