Will get some numbers and some videos on why I decided to go this way. I'm still really not sure what it will do yet. So we'll all figure this out together!
I have a similar set up in my Stinson 108-2. It is a great upgrade. Not as smooth as a Franklin for sure. But is far easier to get parts and service. Also, I trust it. Mine has two oil coolers and runs way too cool in winter if not blocked off.
Mine runs one cooler and I need to block most of it off in the winter. I'm wondering how it will do in the summer. The trust is where I'm at with this engine. I didn't trust the Franklin any longer and there was no way a Franklin could earn my trust again. It's good to hear you like yours, I'm hoping after a year I feel the same.
My inspector put this engine on his 172 and with 4 big adults in it that thing will climb like I couldn't believe. I had to get used to the torque when applying full power at the stop. Thing wanted to pull us left right off the runway without full rudder and a bit of right brake!
You should feel the pull this setup has on a tailwheel :-) It's amazing how horsepower makes pilots excited. Stay tuned for more videos on this conversion.
Hi Scooter, congrats! She certainly climbs enthusiastically! 🙂Please tell me you are going to give Blue a spinner ?? That modern prop hub spoils her classic good looks ! Always great to see new videos from you 🙂
The first of many. This was just showing what happened. Now we're going to talk about what it changed. Looking forward to your video. I really enjoyed the Great Lakes stole video!
No, I used the Coopers Landing STC. It looked to be more complete and has a tuned exhaust. People who use the Univair STC seem to like it. Good luck with your conversation in the you will love the plane!
@@GreatMichiganBushCo I wasn't aware of that one but will check it out. I'm anxious to hear how well it performs compared to the Franklin 165. Love your videos-- keep posting please.
@@paulintexas thanks for watching the videos. So far I have only recorded one Vy takeoff and I was getting 1750 FPM with 1/2 tanks and me in the aircraft. I'll have more videos coming out going over the numbers and even respond I went with this particular STC. Hope to see you in the skies!
This will come in future videos. I'll go over why I choose this engine option. I'll go over the aircraft specs before and after, and Ill figure out the performance changes. Give us a thumbs up and subscribe to be notified when these videos post.
It was a Cooper's landing kit. I purchased it with most of what I needed. There's obviously some hardware and some wire but all the major components are included. It made installation easy or at least easier than I thought it was going to be
Aviation Center in Ann Arbor did the work. The turn around time was a couple months. I purchased a core from Wentworth. This project took me 2 years to complete. I had been gathering parts and STC's so when the plane went down I knew it would be back up quickly. I didn't want it to turn into a 5 year project.
@@ACOGJESUSSCOPESif you're looking for an easy to fly and fun Tailwheel the 108 should be on your radar. I'm going to put some performance numbers and reasoning for the change later this week.
Looking forward to seeing more of it! Looks like a great conversion👍

Congrats Scooter on I’m leaning towards a super Stinson. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you for sharing
I'm putting together a video on the reason I call the 180hp Lycoming a Super Stinson.

Changed out the Franklin for a Lycoming 0-360 one of the most reliable engines in aviation. Good move.
That was the idea. Thanks for noticing.

@GreatMichiganBushCo I can Imagine, a 172 with 800 lbs of men in it weighs quite a bit more than a 108. Lol

I'm glad you liked the videos. Thanks for watching and keep an eye out for a spinner. It might happen. :-)
wilco ! 🙂@@GreatMichiganBushCo
Was wondering when the vid was coming, Scooter! (I still haven't finished my Brodhead video LOL)

Getting ready to do the same on a straight 108 (fuel lines and rudder bungee setup of course). I'm assuming this is the Univair STC?

This STC is really worth a look. It had quite a few engine options and good directions for the A&P.
Can you share some specs like weight -horse power - climb -cruise before and after ???

Glad you enjoyed the video.
What is the approximate empty weight of this aircraft extension 108
It's empty weight is 1319
Who did the O360 overhaul and what was the turnaround time? Did you provide the core or buy something off the shelf?

Your going to miss the sound of the Franklin.
That's all I miss so far 🙂
How long did it take to break in the new engine?
I'm 25 hours so far and still "Breaking" it in. I figure I'll switch to AD oil at 50 hours.
@@GreatMichiganBushCothat’s a brand new engine you installed there?
It is a fresh overhaul. I'm hoping it works out well.@@ACOGJESUSSCOPES
@@GreatMichiganBushCohope you have more videos for us soon. You have me almost convinced on the route to take on my own 108.

Oil filter is safety wired backwards
Maybe look again.
The Lycoming is a great engine but the Franklin sounded better.
The Franklin has a sound. It was awesome!. And then all of a sudden it was an awesome 😂
