      Part of why I enjoy it is because these classic aircraft still feel like machines. They are not hiding behind computers and plastic facades, just plain old flying machines.

    That’s a slick set up. Perfect match for what you do. I’m sure on floats it would be great as well. I have a 470 metalised 108-3. With floats but it’s on 850 wheels. Anyway was thinking of the AV-30. Did you get an adapter plate made or can you buy it?

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  9 месяцев назад

      The 470 would be a great choice for a float plane. I didn't need an adapter plate, if fit right in the hole, That was one of the attractive features of the AV-30. Thanks for watching!

    Glad to see the Stinson back in the air!
    I have a 470 in my " Super Stinson" and it is thirsty! If I was doing one I'd probably go with the lycoming. On floats it's nice to pull up to a marina and buy fuel. If I was on wheels still I'd say come test them back to back. I don't live far from you. But it will now be a float plane for the foreseeable future.

      I think on water the extra HP would be advantageous. That is the one role I see the O-470 being the better choice. If you want to come for a ride and see how the 360 works let me know.

    Mine has an Continental IO-360. 210Hp is plenty of fun an will still cruise 7.8 GPH. Engine is a minimal weight increase with the fixed pitch prop. Similar climb rate. I know mine is a "super" at this point! 🙂These are fantastic airplanes with an alternate powerplant.

      whats the weight difference between ly 0360 and the con IO-360 and would you stick with the IO-360 or do you wish you had the ly 0-360? my gut says more HP lol

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  10 месяцев назад

      I liked the loss of weight with the O-360, but the #35 might be worth 30 horsepower. Lucky for me IO-360 wasn't an option for the -2/

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  10 месяцев назад

      The difference in weight is 30 pounds. Now that being said weight on the nose is problematic due to CG shift. It would be interesting to see the difference side by side or to fly both on the same day.

    • @user-ju3ns2cz1u
      @user-ju3ns2cz1u 10 месяцев назад

      From what I read . The agreements for both are competitive. See if you can link up with the comment or with the IO-360 and do a comparison vid that would be rad

      @@GreatMichiganBushCo i think there are positives and negatives to both engines. A negative is the added expense of maintaining 6 cylinders, the flip side is the 6 is smooth and to me,sounds awesome. The original stc was for a CS prop which does add more weight but also achieved a 2000 ft / min climb. The macauly prop used on mine is the same combination used in the Cessna mescalero back in the late 60’s. It seems well matched and has a great climb rate. I cruise around 2250/2300 rpm. The fuel consumption gives me enough endurance. I do like the injected fuel system. I also have the madras droop tips fitted. I have never flown without them so i can comment on their effectiveness.

    I had 85 hours in a dash one 7:08 with a 165 Franklin before I bought my dash three Stinson it was OK down low but as soon as you go into Idaho in the backcountry it was a dog even after putting VG's on it it really didn't help much.
    You're Ground adjustable prop has as much to do with your airplanes performance as the engine which I think is a great combination. Years ago when I looked at the Lycoming upgrade I was not impressed installation materials that they were using at the time. I would love to get a good look at yours.
    I think you made a good airplane great and it is a super Stinson now !

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  10 месяцев назад

      First off the Cooper STC has great installation materials, high quality stuff. You're correct the Franklin started to falter quickly with altitude. Still breaking it in I've only had this above 3000' once and I was really impressed with the ROT to 7,500' I'll talk about this a bit more in another video, in the end I was still holding a 700fpm. The Franklin would have been down to 300-400fpm at this altitude. I bet I'd keep 500fpm+ up to 10K. Thanks for watching the video and keep the dirty side down.

    Are these all new upgrade/mods you added recently? I know its been awhile since Ive had your video pop up in my feed.

      @GreatMichiganBushCo 😆 what's not to like ! 👍 I am a big fan of Blue...she is a beautiful plane....a classic! The prop is cool...its a bit "resto-mod" (if your into cars), and I love the modern tweaks youve done to her....However the prop hob is incongruous looking and spoils Blue suede shooes classic good looks ! • @davidspeyers5740
    @davidspeyers5740 10 месяцев назад +1

    I think the most pressing question most want to know is... how much? 😀
    Having flown both a 108-2 w/ 165 Franklin and 108-3 w/ 0-470 this week... the big bore engine just bludgeons the air and the climb angle at 80 MPH is almost scary!

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  10 месяцев назад

      I'm not sure how much. I have put these pieces together over two and half years and didn't keep records, probably because I don't want to know. I'd sure like to hear more about the -3 with the O-470. The Lycoming O-360 with the propeller pitched for climb is also scary climb angle it points towards the sky and levitates. I think the Franklin is a smooth running, great sounding engine and probably good for the time, but today it's not the best choice for this airframe.

      Absolutely over time the instrument continues to improve and problems that early instruments had have been solved, now they even have magnetic flux sensors for the AV30. It's a great instrument and both are some of the best values for avionics on the market.
