How To Add Darts To A Dress Shirt (Beginner Friendly!)

  • We are taking this baggy dress shirt from Target and are in the process of tailoring it to give it a nice slim fit. This is step three in the process. In step one and two we measured and took in the side seams of this shirt.
In step three we're going to be adding some darts to the back. Shirt darts are an incredible way to slim the back of the dress shirt, whereas taking in the side seams just addresses the front and the sides.
For this step we need a sewing machine, some sewing pins, and an iron. Take your measuring tape and measure your shirt from armpit seam to armpit seam. On my shirts I like my darts to start 7 inches from the seam, but your mileage may vary. Then make a line with your pins, and put a pin at the bottom of your shirt. Pinch your shirt at those points and fold it over. That line is going to be the line we use to pin and dart our shirt. Measure it out and see how you feel about those measurements by trying your shirt on. Do you like it? Then take it off, flip your shirt inside out and re-pin it. Now just sew a straight stitch on the back where your pins are. Boom shirt darts! Easy huh?

Great vid SD! I've been tailoring my shirts for 5 or so years and darts were the one thing that gave me the most trouble at first. This is a great tutorial.
Anyway, I noticed a long time ago when looking at most of my custom made shirts that the darts are widest in the middle of the back and tapers off both at the top and bottom. I find that this gives a better result for both comfort and fit since the shirt drapes better below your waist. Try this out and let me know!

Thx for the dart tutorial. Very useful (I too am more V-shaped than average). I was wandering though, is it exactly the same technique/measurements for short sleeve summer shirts? Those that you let loose and do not tuck in the pants? Are there variations for the different shirt bottom endings (flat, rounded in the back, rounded in back+front...).

I like the straight look, not the taper on me due to large hipbones. Not even large lats help that much. Because of that it makes it a little harder to measure 100% in a straight line. Before i just took off for example 2cm on each side. Now i need to take of more at the chest and a little less uderneath, i like it kinda tight at chest and more loose on stomach area.

Every time I tailor a shirt the armpits look weird. What can I do to make sure they come out right?

Ok dude, I like your channel, but I spent quality time (16 mins) with my shirt and sewing machine and ended up with a straight jacket. There's a lot of skill and experience required to properly do what you show, in 16 mins!
