Hey brother! Love your work. Could you tackle button up shirts and the gap at the chest area? As someone who wears bras but like the men’s button up shirts, I don’t like the gap between the buttons when I wear the shirt. People can see my bra you know? @@paulmorton4319 is this even a thing?! As far as I can tell, some of the best tailors of all time were men. Bespoke suits, alterations in general and denim. Literally all types of tailoring/sewing. Hell, even a lot of the big designer names are men.
I’m also a man, btw. Been tailoring my clothes for the last couple years. Mostly because of extreme frustration with my local tailors always getting the taper on my pants wrong. I’d have to always make 2-3 trips, for each pair of pants, just to get them right. And this becomes extremely time consuming and aggravating, when you have multiple pairs of chinos that need to be altered . Especially, when you get new clothes and want to wear them immediately. But, the tailor is backed up and it takes a whole 1-2 weeks just to get your clothes back the first time. For them all to be wrong. And then, 2-3 more trips after that for each pair, to get them right. I said fuck that! Bought a sewing machine and started doing it myself and now I get it right typically the 1st, or, 2nd try and it only takes me about 20-30min for each pair. Depending on how long it takes to measure my lines, draw a guide and do the actual sewing.
Thank you so much for such a great tutorial! My tailor was going to charge me $140 to fit 5 of my favorite shirts, so I used that money to buy all the sewing material needed! Thanks Stylish D!!
I use my tailor's chalk with all sorts of projects. Highly recommend his suggestion to use that for guiding your stitch line. Get BOTH white and blue (the blue is for marking white or really light color fabrics). And use a utility knife or sharp pocket knife to scrape the drawing edge of the chalk to refresh the surface and sort of sharpen the chalk. Tailor chalk will get burnished by handling it and rubbing it on fabric. Burnished chalk doesn't draw well, the same way old burnished pencil erasers don't erase well. They both need to have the burnished surface scraped away (for the chalk) or abraded away (for the eraser). Nobody ever taught me about sharpening the chalk for each project, but it makes a world of difference.
As a tall (6'4") but slim dude, it's literally impossible to find shirts that fit me probably. Even shirts that are already supposed to be slim fit end up being super baggy around the waste in sizes that are long enough. But yeah, this actually looks relatively easy to do, so I'll have to give it a shot (I'll definitely have to start with some cheapo shirts first though lol).

One extra caution for safety, and avoiding frustration. Before "sewing" on a machine, using the wheel to move the needle through a few stitches without power to make sure you set it up properly. There are feet and throat plates for sewing machines that will not allow a zig zag stitch. They just have a narrow hole for a strait stitch, in the centre position. This isn't the default, but if someone else also uses the machine, it's possible they had a reason to change it out. Turning the wheel by hand gives you the chance to check everything lines up safely and accurately, before adding electricity - which can cause the needle to shatter, which is at best an annoying waste of time and means you have to replace the needle. At worst, it could send a broken piece of needle flying towards your face - lets save risking injuries for when we're saving lives please. ;)

As someone with 15 years sewing experience, I can safely say this is not the correct way. The t-shirt was not made with a straight stitch. It was made with a 1 stitch cover stitch machine- a cover stitch machine allows for stretch in the fabric seam, a straight stitch does not. It will snap with tension, eliminating the purpose of using a stretch fabric. If you were wanting to do this at home, the best way would be to zig-zag the seam (not the edge) or use an overlocker/serger. I would never recommend a straight stitch on a stretch fabric. Unfortunately all this tutorial is going to do is ruin your t-shirt.
Not everyone has an overlock/serger, I make my videos easily accessible for the average person. However yes, you could use a zigzag stitch if you wanted but it isn't necessary. I've never had an issue using a straight stitch on t-shirts. Stretchy workout shirts on the otherhand...

hey im going back to highschool in a week and I've been trying to re-invent my style, bad news, don't know how to tailor and I need serious help, could you make a beginners guide?
This is such an amazing resource and RUclips channel. You are an incredible presence and teacher. When you show the zig zag stitch little mishap and fix I was so impressed. The close ups are so helpful. Thank you!!!!
This was great, especially all the oopses. I watched 100s+++ videos and nobody gets to the real life fixes that I've learned the hard way! Great video.
That was awesome! I’m also female but I’ve been wanting to learn how to do this. I hate baggy shirts. It should look tailored to fit precisely. I just found you. Loved this video. I will check out more!
I hate commoner clothing (walmart, target, jcpenny, etc). It's always the "One Size Fits All" kinda thing. They make them boxy and hang off the shoulders bcuz they have to consider fat people If it weren't for fat people, we wouldn't have the need for tutorial vids like this
Maybe don't blame fat people for existing, blame the people who even came up with one size fits all clothes, there are so many body types so having regular clothing sizes is important.
@@celestialhumanoid I guess that's also a fair point. But fat ppl still started it I also blame the people who don't bother to make more sizes. I wouldn't mind my sweaters, coats, and shirts to be tighter/take shape around my abdomen. Fit and Unfit shirts instead of 1-size-fits-all. Errywhere I go, erry brand ever just makes 1 shape only There's not a shirt out there that'll fit Fit people properly. Unless you spend a fortune with custom tailoring or risk doing it yourself, all shirts are made with fatties in mind. Accomodating the Unfit. It's the Fit that have to wear clothes made for the Unfit
So many years later, but THANK YOU for this! I've tried to watch most sewing videos, and I'm a chic, and most sewists are chics, and I swear, every single one, even beginners, are like, "next get our your serger..." Bite me lady! LOL In this case dude, I'm so happy to be "mansplained" to! So many shirts are about to go under the needle....
Thank you for making this seem doable. I found you through Reddit on a six year old post that you updated and I cannot comment on. I can't wait to try.
Maybe just do the flip inside out move first, then do everything including the try-on part. Cuz we are not going to wear it somewhere, but it could save us from doing the measurement and pinning thing again.
I stumbled upon your video & i really liked it. I have ZERO experience in sewing, so I'm lucky to have found your video. Thanks for the tutorial. You got a new subscriber

Man, I wish we could hang out sometime. I think you'd be a lot of fun to just kick it with our kids playing together and wrecking your house. Oh, wait. Okay, wrecking the park then. Cool. Hit me up.
This is very useful for me. I have a hawaiian shirt party to go to and my shirt has magically disappeared so I did an emergency thrift and all the shirts are gigantic. Waiting on a few friends response on which one looks best before attacking them.
Thank you for for such an energetic an to the point video. Also thank you for making mistakes and showing how to fix them. By being real, you also saved me from having to watch multiple videos trying to solve those mistakes. I can finally make my favorite loose clothes fit better on me.❤
Love your content, but don't think I've seen you explain how to shorten t-shirt sleeves, only reduce their circumference. I'm kinda assuming its the same process as reducing the length of the shirt overall, just... a smaller... tube?... In any case, there's a video idea for you.
From one nicely tailored shirt make a cardboard pattern. Mark the shirt inside out with chalk. Sew the zigzag using a side cutter foot. DONE. Steps reduced from like 6 to 2 and the template can be used on all your shirts.
This is a good skill to have for sure. Being a short guy, I have to tailor all my pants. However I feel shirts should be a bit baggy so people aren't starting at my fat.
I grew up in the Philippines where I watched my mother sew using an old school Singer sewing machine powered by feet using an oscillating pedal LOL that's how I learned how to sew... In the early 90s I was lucky enough to be taught by teachers in High School class called "Home Economics" and not only they taught us how to sew using a machine we also sew by hand which improved my sewing skills. (Plus home economics class taught me canning food, cooking food, growing food and hunt/gather for food) I'm glad I did because in our home, I am the one hemming pants and wife's scrubs and shirts and we saved some money LOL we are an endangered species bro LOL
Haha nice. My wife is an apparel production and design professor (she has a PhD in it) and runs the production lab at a major national university. I'm going to do this and surprise her with the new skill. Might try using her serger instead of the straight up machine. Great video!
LOVE the the vid! Im experiencedish at sewing, but nobody explained this in a way that gave me the confidence to try it myself! One issue i have, is a long torso, do u have any tips for that? I always assumed id have to buy xl shirts and re-tailor every single seam so that they didnt end up looking like half shirts on me!
This is gr8, but I cant have a sawing mashine, *but* I'm in India, many tailors all over the place, but often they do get it, so I'll draw the line myself, I have a great shirt but looks like a box, I hope I'll get it right
Never in a notable amount of time would i have guessed that the most enjoyable video of the day would be about making a t-shirt fit perfectly. Good stuff 💪🏻

Exactly, like my day is always made when he uploads!
Agreed!
What an agreeable man. Out of all the not just sewing video's, but craft video's in general, your's is so wonderful to follow! Thank you so much for talking about every detail, and going through all the possibilities that could go wrong!
hey im going back to highschool in a week and I've been trying to re-invent my style, bad news, don't know how to tailor and I need serious help, could you make a beginners guide?
This is a beginners guide lol
Love the effort you put into these videos, keep it up :)
Thanks a ton!
Glad it helped! I hate how people can just edit out their mistakes, makes it seem way easier than it is.
That was awesome! I’m also female but I’ve been wanting to learn how to do this. I hate baggy shirts. It should look tailored to fit precisely. I just found you. Loved this video. I will check out more!
Super well explained, thanks so much man!
I hate commoner clothing (walmart, target, jcpenny, etc). It's always the "One Size Fits All" kinda thing. They make them boxy and hang off the shoulders bcuz they have to consider fat people
If it weren't for fat people, we wouldn't have the need for tutorial vids like this
Maybe don't blame fat people for existing, blame the people who even came up with one size fits all clothes, there are so many body types so having regular clothing sizes is important.
@@celestialhumanoid I guess that's also a fair point. But fat ppl still started it
I also blame the people who don't bother to make more sizes. I wouldn't mind my sweaters, coats, and shirts to be tighter/take shape around my abdomen. Fit and Unfit shirts instead of 1-size-fits-all. Errywhere I go, erry brand ever just makes 1 shape only
There's not a shirt out there that'll fit Fit people properly.
So awesome to read! Glad it was helpful for you! And I totally know what you mean about the Serger comment, it’s like umm how about no…
Such a great teacher! And I love your delivery.
My cat, Luna, sat on my lap and watched this entire video with interest. I'm going to use your technique to tailor some shirts. Thanks!!
Hi Luna! Wasn't the cat in Sailor Moon named Luna as well?
How to leadis T-SHirt fitting. Sir
You’re so cool! Love your energy and your great sewing tips!
Thanks for the awesome comment!
any possibility of doing no- sew improvements?
Solid video idea, thanks!
Love the sewing machine noises lol
Excellent explanation ..... very educational and entertaining .. Congratulations.-
dude, sewing tips for men... it is cool and weird ...
Funny how that works huh??
Thank you for making this seem doable. I found you through Reddit on a six year old post that you updated and I cannot comment on. I can't wait to try.
I love that you explain what and WHY in your steps, not enough people do this! Great video
Glad you liked it!!
Extremely informative excellently presented and i could follow you with my ADHD. Awesome awesome I’m following
You have to try on what you sew afterwards. We love to see the finished products on TV land. Please and thank you!!
It's at the beginning of the video friend!
@@StylishDTailors damnnn! 🤣😳😁 now I have to rewind the entire video 🤦🏻♀️ ty sir!!! 💗
Thank you for this!!! All the vids I’ve watched before this keep the seam straight. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience
Maybe just do the flip inside out move first, then do everything including the try-on part. Cuz we are not going to wear it somewhere, but it could save us from doing the measurement and pinning thing again.
I love this video! I’m a small girl that needs to tailor everything. I like the video better than one geared for women.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I stumbled upon your video & i really liked it. I have ZERO experience in sewing, so I'm lucky to have found your video. Thanks for the tutorial. You got a new subscriber
This is such a good channel. Every man should learn how to sew. It's a valuable skill!
I'm just here for the sewing machine noises
ENG ENG ENG ENG ENG ENG!!!!!!
Good Stuff! My shirts look fit me like that singer dude with the Talking Heads, David Byrne. I know what I'm doing this weekend - Thanks Sew Bro.
HEY MAN! YEAH YOU!! STYLISH D!! Man I love your channel. You're so real and give the real scoop on how to do stuff and even when you mess up you're all good with it.
It's coming soon! I'm going to remake both shortening videos actually.
(Plus home economics class taught me canning food, cooking food, growing food and hunt/gather for food) I'm glad I did because in our home, I am the one hemming pants and wife's scrubs and shirts and we saved some money LOL we are an endangered species bro LOL
been watching this for 1 minute and i already love this channel, subbed
I always assumed id have to buy xl shirts and re-tailor every single seam so that they didnt end up looking like half shirts on me!
man i hate when you buy a nice fit but just too dam Long like if short peoples didn't exist Puh'ah 🤜POW-POW💥💥
Hey thank you so much, I appreciate that!
Maybe this is just me, but I actually like them baggy, I usually go one-size larger than what actually "fits" me.
Inches ???? so you only want american audience ? do the global Centimeters and i'll stay tuned. I can't be bothered using inches and that. It's not precise enough.
The title lured me in because I've lost plenty of weight so I have lots of baggy T-shirts, and then when the presenter says he wants his shirt to fit like THIS and shows it off and the only thought in my mind is, "That started out as a mens' shirt?!"
You are good D...😘😘😘, I ll definitely buy them big for this tutorial even if u said no...😃😃😃
