From one of SD's biggest fans, in response to folks looking to lengthen, rather than shorten. That is a bit more complicated, because you have to add, instead of subtracting. Whatever you do to lengthen is going to show. So the idea is to get decorative. You can insert a strip of cloth across the width of the sleeves, in a contrasting colour, it will be a design feature. Same with lengthening the body, you can add a horizontal stripe across the chest. The best thing to do, though, is learn how to sew clothes with a pattern, and adjust before you even cut the fabric, lengthening where you need to. A lot of patterns even have that printed on the tissue paper. And a P.S. to this-- the inexpensive machines SD recommends, can be used for sew-from-scratch projects, too. If you have a straight stitch and zig zag stitch with adjustable length and width, you're pretty much covered except for heavy outerwear or leather.
I just took a dress shirt that I paid less than $10 for at a thrift store and transformed it into something that looks like it was custom made just for me all thanks to this video. Thanks SD!!!
Starting to dress more businesses gothic, so thes have really helped me get all my thrifted clothes to fit. I appreciate all your hard work so much 🔥🔥🔥
Great channel, great info, great voice! I bought a sewing machine at a thrift store and have started to hem and taper all my thrift store clothes. And it works. Keep making the videos!!!
SD just wanted to say I started watching your videos a month ago when I got tired of my T shirts not fitting the way I wanted. I’m short but athletic build so either the shirts fit chest and shoulders too tight or they are way too long. Anyways my girl got me a sewing machine for my bday yesterday and I’m excited to get started. Just wanted to say thanks for all the tips and videos. Keep it up 👍🏼
This video is right on time! I have several shirts that need to be altered like this. I have broad shoulders, so I have to size up, then have the bust and sides altered to fit.
That's a great idea! Whats awesome is there are very few hard and fast rules about all of this. At the end of the day if you find a method that works for ya then go for it!
Thanks for adding a new how- to. I love your videos. I've altered maybe a couple dozen shirts using your methods. I too am an extra- medium. I'd love to see you do a live stream altering something in real time. (Hard to do close ups like that, tho.)
You make watching this so entertaining. Makes me want to pull out my sewing machine just because. ❤❤ Keep up the good word. I really enjoy your content.
Nice SD, thanks for your sharing. Do you mind one day you care share how to alter shirt shoulder too? I like thrift stores but usually got stuck with wide shoulder shirt. Thanks again
Excellent videos, direct and to the point 👍 Thanks for all info and fun stuff 🙂 Regarding fitting shirts, would it be a good idea to make a template of what fits you instead of measuring each shirt or are they too different?
You COULD use a template but I've noticed it's just easier to do this to one shirt and reuse the measurements. Even if it isn't the same brand shirt the measurements should still be close. And if they aren't you can try it on first and adjust accordingly. For instance this shirt was from Kohl's, and it was so big and baggy that I'll probably never have to be this aggressive with a dress shirt ever again. My usual measurements wouldn't do anything to this shirt. So it's an outlier.
Do you have tips on lengthening sleeves, bodices, and pant legs? I’m tall and long limbed so much of my closet would be better served if the length was there. ESPECIALLY with pants and jeans. I’m a woman by the way.
Hey D, Any tips on lengthening sleeves? 😂 I have longer than average arms so, unless I spend a little more, I struggle to find shirts with long enough sleeves
Every time i take a dress shirt to my tailor she takes in the sides and armpits too tight. 1. When do you use darts vs just taking in the sides. 2. She told me she had to take in the armpit with the sides - i only want the sides taken in.
That's gotta be annoying thats for sure, you don't have to touch the armpits if you don't want too. In your case what you can do is taper your stitch back out before you get to your armpits as opposed to after. And you can JUST take in the sides if you want, but darts give you a much more sleek look in the shirt IMO.

Heck yeah! Let the tailoring addiction begin my friend!

Dude marry her, best birthday gift ever!! Good luck and reach out with any questions!
short but athletic is basically mandatory tailor land lol

Nice work. I usually measure dart placement from the center back. Unlike side seams, that landmark is always in the same place.

@amierichan1428 answered this perfectly for ya! I'm on desktop so I can't tell if it's in the same comment thread but I'll pin it at the top.
I am not sure if i missed it or not. was the part where you sewed the dart from the inside like the side seems or the outside?
Yup you sew the darts on the inside of the shirt
I bought this same shirt at Walmart, it wasnt even $9 when it was new.
That moment when you realize you got ripped off by Goodwill haha!
Go BUCS!
i am looking for a solution to common problem, stretchet tshirt neckline. Something without boiling it or any other creaziness.
Do you mean like bacon neck?
@@StylishDTailors yes exactly , this is the word i was looking for :)

Been ordering a lot from online websites and of course nothing fit perfect. I might of found a new Hobbie
