The most commercially successful band in the world in both ticket sales & album sales from 1969- 1976 was indeed Grand Funk Railroad. The first band in AMERICA in any music genre to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums was again Grand Funk Railroad. People forget how big this band was.
I am a Black female and credit this group with one of the main crossover music revelations in our music back in the day. Love them always. Still have my large silver round album that looks like a huge silver dollar. Will never cash it in, ever. Mark Farner was a sexy dude.
Mark Farner was a true rock musician, musicians. He sang, wrote songs, played lead and rhythm guitars, played keyboards and harmonica. So glad I got to see him in his hey days of 1973 and 1975. But I'd give anything to have seen him in that iconic Atlanta Pop Festival where the greatness of Grand Funk first shown.
@PackedFunk Yea, by this time in late '72, GFRxR had been the number one band in the world in album & ticket sales. And the most unusual thing about this is it happened without radio airplay. It was their incredible live shows that made them famous. Grand Funk Railroad was a "PERFORMANCE VEHICLE!!!" Their concerts were major events, not merely shows. Some of the ticket sales records they set were never broken. (Shea Stadium July 1971)
Sure wish we could see this in 1080P! Wicked group! Those people there at the concert were witnessing history...GFR led and all other rock bands tried/try to emulate them. Rock on!
Without Mark, GFR..Isn't what they used to be.....I've seen Mark live solo a few times and he still kicks major ASS...Funk on the other hand doesn't have that same energy w/o Mark...Mark was GFR....
Absolutely!! Wish Don Brewer would figure that out!!!! These guys had some kind of magic on the stage together that is just not there without all of them together!!
I saw the modern incarnation of Grand Funk perform at a Nascar event and aside from Don Brewer singing American Band they sounded like a garage band. Mark Farner makes the band.
This channel has surpassed 2 million views of our Grand Funk Railroad videos. Thanks to everyone who supports our effort to induct GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
Wow, this is awesome and to think that I was even there that night makes it even doubly awesome!!! One of the best live bands I've ever seen, just pure Rock & Roll energy which is the way it's supposed to be!
A GFR album was the first album I ever bought. I lived in SE FL in the late sixties and one time a friend came to visit after a James Taylor / Carol King concert. He said as James stepped on stage the crowd roared for so long James finally said "Christ man, I ain't Grand Funk" and finally began his show. Does that not say something about this fabulous band?!?!?!
I was sitting in front of the television watching this when it was originally broadcast ... It sounds even better now than it did then. Grand Funk Railroad Forever!!
The fact remains that no band dared to or could follow GFRxR in their heyday. Remember what happened to Zeppelin in '69? Can you imagine trying to take the stage after this????
(uploader) The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971. Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. Whe the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2. Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!
Awesome sound! I've always loved GFR's immediacy and their simple, rough patterns. the very essence of rock is made out of this. Also, there's always been a bluesy element underneath their music. Thank you so much for posting!! P.S. You should have specified in your title that there's "Footstompin' music" too . Great song as welll)))
Thanks lobofan. So many GFRxR concerts from the early to mid '70's ended in riots. Mark Farner says, "we were the voice of the people in the songs I wrote." I personally think Mark Farner & Co. are still paying the price for being outspoken in those war years.
This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.
I think so too vinny. The joys of life for sure. I love watching this performance. Such power & talent & style. GFRxR was at their peak at this time. They didn't take a backseat to any band in the world at this time.
I saw this lineup on 12/2/1972. It was a couple of weeks before this concert. I was in 9th grade in Tucson. Same stage layout, Mark had the same guitar and same red pants too. They were so Great. Freddie King and band were the support.
Good to hear from you Bill. My back is better now. It stabilized finally. Being a big Buddy Holly fan, I must recognized his death 51 years ago tonight. The day the music died Feb. 3, 1959. I got a private tour of Norman Petty Recording Studio in Clovis, N.M. last August. I got to hold the mic in my hands that Buddy recorded Peggy Sue with. Also got one of his guitar picks from Travis Holly, his brother. One of the coolest events of my life for sure. T.J.
Well all you Funk Fans, that is one million views of our Grand Funk Railroad videos. Thanks to everyone who has supported our efforts with the petition in the video's description. This is not only The People's Band, This is America's Band! Here's to the next one million views & God Bless Everyone!!! T.J.
The Magic That Was Mark Farner & GFRxR! This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it. People are still in awe of this great but misunderstood American Band
It really is bbmusic1. There was not a band in the world that could follow them at this time. GFRxR was the number 1 band in the world in album sales & concert ticket sales from 1970-1976. This captures some of the magic.
The best live band ever, bar none! You've got that right tnuc4. This is what a Rock Concert should be. The roof of MSG is about to be blown-off! Farner switching from lead guitar to keyboards & singing lead. People had a smile on their face after a GFRxR Event. Their concerts WERE events!
This is my fave song of theirs. Great band and they were great live. The video catches a piece of Railroad before this starts. Railroad is a song that has to be seen live. Hard to believe what the drummer does to create the sound of a train.
They are truly like a run-away freight train. For music to be considered great, there has to be passion, talent, energy, & showmanship. This band had all 4 in abundance. GFRxR was a performance vehicle.
I agree Rawhide. When the band is enjoying themselves, that energy is felt by the croud. GFRxR was a "Performance Vehicle." I still to this day receive personal messages from people telling me they were shocked at the energy & passion this great band displayed live. Something they will never forget.
Probably the most intense performance GFR ever delivered. They were really at their peak here....their energy and electricity is beyond compare. Loved them then and love them now.
Their music did make people feel good. Their concerts were major events that no one wanted to miss. The showmanship of this great band was second to none. GFRxR was indeed a "Performance Vehicle".
I saw this show in Des Moines, IA around Christmas 1972 (16 yrs old). It was the most powerful show I've seen to date. Notice Mark playing the (now rare) MicroFrets Signature guitar and the West Fillmore Amps. I'm fortunate to own a similar MicroFrets model. Thanks so much for sharing this.
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!!
Never in the history of any genre of music has one band been so dominate. People forget just how big Grand Funk Railroad was in the early seventies. Everyone please sign our petition in this video's description.
I hear that Parker! There are several GFRxR videos that I can never get enough of & this is one! I love the way each member is yelling at other members to challenge them. This is truly a great concert! When "The Band" is in to it, so is "The Crowd"! None was better at this than GFRxR!
I remember hearing about that GIGANTIC billboard @ Times Square while living in Texas as a teenager & the record breaking concert that would follow. Mark, Don, & Mel ruled the entertainment (anti-establishment) world at that time. People seem to forget over time just how big this band was. They only played major venues (stadiums) & sold them out in record time. This was done without radio airplay or any help from music critics, further adding to the legend of GFRxR.
I am so glad I went to see the real Grand Funk in Rockford, Michigan at the tail end of their Live in Bosnia tour. It was so freaking great and real treat. My 15 year old son loved it to pieces too! God bless Mark Farner and the boys.
Hey Ting. I do know something about this. In the fall of '72 ABC had Kirshner be creative consultant & executive producer on a show called "In Concert." A year later, Sept. 27, '73 he went on his own money & started "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, which was syndicated." This is one of those early ABC shows that Kirshner was involved in, but not his show. If you notice, it says "In Concert" in the video. Wikipedia has this info. Few would notice this Ting!

This might possibly be the best live performance of a band just in its prime and in the zone that ive ever seen. I am so smoked buy this performance. I love how the drummer is so much like animal from the muppets the way he yells all the time...hahahaha. Farner is so fricking good and the band is so in to one another its unreal to capture this...great video.
Many young bands could learn from watching this great video of GFRxR in their prime. No band could even come close to their live performances. All the energy, great voice & multi-instruments of Farner, Best drummer in the world Brewer, Mel playing that Fender Jazz Bass with a pick & Frost jamming the keyboards. No band could follow GFRxR in their prime. Their great 3 hour concerts is really what made them famous.
Hello chichymama. Forever people have said that the magic of GFRxR live performances could never be captured on audio only. This video does capture some of that magic. These guys were a touring machine. Being constantly dogged by music critics & almost no airplay of their songs, GFRxR became famous from their great 3 hour plus concerts. GFRxR was a performance vehicle that no band in the world could follow.
I hear that rixta50! Mark Farner is one Bad-Ass Front Man!! All things considered, his sonwriting, his incredable voice, lead guitar, keyboard, harmonica, & even drums makes him hard to beat as a front-man. THE BEST EVER!

Hello flammaster. Mark was playing the (now rare) MicroFrets Signature Guitar and the West Fillmore Amps. Mark tryed many different guitars after putting the Messenger on the shelf right before this period. Myself, I liked the MicroFrets. He now plays a Parker Fly Guitar that has a carbon fibre body (extremely light weight).
This was the first concert I ever went to with my boys Ray and Steve and it was the loudest thing I ever heard in my life. Freddie King opened up for them and also rocked it. An experience I'll never forget! Peace.
@TOPOFFMAN I remember those Weekly Reader magazines. What a cool memory. That "EPluibus Funk" album is the hardest to find in mint condition of all the GFRxR albums. Having a signed one is pryceless.
I couldn't agree with you more Annalee69! I was 12 in 1971 when I saw GFR on TV and they left a HUGE impression on me. From Kiss to VanHalen, Manowar to Maiden, Stones to Chili Peppers, you name it; no other band has ever since left the same impression. What I like about GFR(Farner)is that they are pure positiveness!
You are so right there Fattdaddy! I have a GFRxR poster from '71 with Rod Stewart, Eric Burdon & War, & Elizabeth as opening acts. Tickets $4, $5, & $6. Those were the days!!
These kind of numbers can not be ignored any longer. Everyone sign the petition in this video's full description. It only takes seconds to do & please leave a comment.
Hey T.J.,Good to hear from you.Hope your back is better as I'm still doing P.T. twice a week. I think some pain we just have to live with. Hope everything is well with you....Bill
Yea Cougar, Destitute & Losing. That song was ogiginally the B-Side of The Locomotion. It was re-released on the 30 Years Of Funk three disk set. One of my fav. GFRxR songs for sure.

I don't forget...I owned every album and these guys were my favorite band as a teenager back in the early 70's and they still are. :)
В 1976 году у меня появился магнитофон и первой группой был Гран Фанк и Эмерсон! И по сей день я их слушаю
One of the best and most underrated bands of all time. Mark Farner's vocal and musical brilliance is second to none.
I am a Black female and credit this group with one of the main crossover music revelations in our music back in the day. Love them always. Still have my large silver round album that looks like a huge silver dollar. Will never cash it in, ever. Mark Farner was a sexy dude.

Immortal music! Grand Dunn's music was more soul based. They had a deep groove that was danceable. They went beyond riffs...they were soul!
great tracks brings me back to when i was a kid jumping off the couch playing air guitar.....whew

By any chance, someone has recorded the Grand Funk live Album (the black and white) the song "In need"? That version is AMAZING!!!
Luckily we have live footage of grand funk i am now a huge fan
I hear that rixta50! Mark Farner is one Bad-Ass Front Man!! All things considered, his sonwriting, his incredable voice, lead guitar, keyboard, harmonica, & even drums makes him hard to beat as a front-man. THE BEST EVER!
Mark Farner wow what a talented guy it's why we love him
The fact remains that the most successful Rock Band in the world from '69-'76 in album & ticket sales was Grand Funk Railroad.
To continue to be shunned by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is unacceptable!

I NEVER get tired of watching this and believe me I've watched it ALOT! What a band and what a performance! Thanks for having this up
Many GFRxR concerts ended in riots with cop cars turned upside down.

thanks a lot for the post - these guys were just amazing. Not so much anymore. Saw them in '99 with the original line-up and STILL impressive.
NOJODA!!! ESTO SÍ QUE ES CABILLA!!
Mark Farner is so talented, guitar, drums, harmonica, writing, singing & such stage presence. Without him there is no Funk!

God Bless Funk Momma bekki! Her love & understanding is making the world a better place.
A cool walk down memory lane...Thanx!
Hello flammaster. Mark was playing the (now rare) MicroFrets Signature Guitar and the West Fillmore Amps. He now plays a Parker Fly Guitar that has a carbon fibre body (extremely light weight).

Yea Cougar, Destitute & Losing. That song was ogiginally the B-Side of The Locomotion.
It was re-released on the 30 Years Of Funk three disk set. One of my fav. GFRxR songs for sure.

This one & the "Into The Sun" above in video response are my favorites.
