Crowded House. The lead singer was also part of a band which is one of my favorites called split endz with songs like 6 months in a leaky boat and I got you. And one step ahead and Hope I never y'all should check them out
RIP Paul Hester (the drummer). I used to watch The Wiggles with my son when he was little and when I saw Paul on the show it made me so happy! I saw Crowded House play in Boston when I was in college and it was such a fun show, they ran around the stage and changed instruments with each other. It was so fun! So much talent and one of my favorite bands.
Crowded House put out some great music. I think Neal's brother Tim is on background vocals but not in the video. They were in Split Enz together. "Something So Strong" "Better Be Home Soon" "Fall At Your Feet" "Private Universe" Many more!
My favorites by them: For Rocking out, Locked Out. For grooving, Pineapple Head. For sheer beauty, Walking on the Spot. But all their songs and albums are studied perfection (Hmm…wonder which record is my favorite….)
You're opening up such a rich seam of treasure with Crowded House. They have so many wonderful songs in their back catalogue. Distant Sun, Locked Out, Private Universe, Four Seasons in One Day, Together Alone. The main songwriter is Neil Finn and he had a solo career at one point. He did a great solo song called She Will Have Her Way.
Crowded House are one of those bands who've always flown under most people's radars. Here in the UK they occasionally troubled the Top 20 of the singles chart but this was their solitary Top 10 hit. Yet they have a canon chock-full of some of the most timeless, exquisite pop/rock songs ever recorded. It still says a lot that when their compilation _Recurring Dream: the Very Best of Crowded House_ was released in 1996, the marketing for it in this country said "You know more of these songs than you think you do". Becaue it was true: people suddenly realised that they _did_ - and bought it by the shedload: it was an instant Number One album, spent six months straight in the Top 20 and went quadruple-platinum. Unfortunately, the band were in the process of breaking up so never got the chance to really capitalise on it. Perhaps it's for the best; if they'd ever become massively, truly mainstream-popular then they wouldn't to this day feel like a beautiful, cherishable, well-kept 'secret'. Everyone in the know, though, tends to agree that Neil Finn is a stone-cold genius of pop craftmanship. And of course they did, after much time and tragedy had elapsed, eventually reform after more than a decade apart. And they've since released four more albums to go with the four they put out in their original existence, and are still garnering critical plaudits, devoted fans and general public indifference. Which, I guess, is how it was always meant to be. I don't even know if it's worth recommending other songs of theirs to react to, because they're almost always so understated it's hard to imagine what reaction they'd provoke beyond, maybe, "Oh that's nice," or "Oh that's lovely". And you've already done what is otherwise the most 'obvious' one, the mighty Don't Dream It's Over. But try listening, if you get the chance, and perhaps even just privately, to the wonderful Fall At Your Feet, Four Seasons In One Day, Private Universe, Into Temptation, Distant Sun, Pineapple Head, Not The Girl You Think You Are - and marvel, and maybe fall in love.
Very well put and I totally agree. I think they get damned with faint praise as you alluded too by being seen as "nice", "pleasant" and inoffensive, but if you dig deeper especially lyrically you will find things differ quite considerably. Temple Of Low Men is where I came in and that album has it's dark moments which is probably why it killed them in the US. Luckily here in the UK they have had some modest success chart wise, but live I think is where things they're at their best and the music is at it's best. I'm fortunate enough to be able to see them for a second time in four months in October in London and it will be a joy as always. I've seen CH 7 times and I wish it had been more. :)
The story behind Pineapple Head is one of my favorites. I encourage everyone to seek it out so you can treasure this on your own without my biases attached. Seriously, parents will especially appreciate it.
@@jamesboyce4000 Ahh thanks for responding, yes they're definitely one of those bands where the sunniness of the tunes can mask the darkness of the lyrics very effectively aren't they? I'm glad that despite their plunge from success in the US they kept getting their songs into the psyche of us UK listeners. Hope you have a fantastic time when you see them again next month!
I am from Australia and Crowed House are Icons. They had so many big hits. Not a little know secret. One of the best things to ever come out of Aus/NZ. You don't get asked to join Fleetwood Mac by being a little known gem. Crowed House were well known around the world but mega big down under. They are still going. I saw them 2 years ago in Australia. Still amazing. Please choose your words wisely as you might anoy a lot of people from my part of the world. We truly love Crowded House and they did not just have one or 2 big hits the had 20 or more. Sorry, but get your facts fight. Blur were never very big in Australia and US but were huge in the UK.
Growing up in Australia in the 80s was incredible with the bands Australia 🇦🇺 and New Zealand had,try out,Its only Natural,Fall at Your Feet, World Where U Live,Mean To Me,Distant Sun and Sister Madly are just a few of Crowded House's ripper songs. And only last year Paul McCartney actually came out and said Niel Finn was the greatest song writer of all time. Absolutely incredible from a guy who knows how to write a couple decent songs😂🇦🇺
Love a bit of Crowded House, Neil Finn's lyrics are always spot on. Love the line in this "do I lie like a lounge-room lizard, or do I sing like a bird released?" Distant Sun and Fall at Your Feet are great songs of theirs too.
This was is regarded in the UK as the best release from Oz's best band. Memorable track beautifully constructed and impossible to get out of your head.
For those interested in the Bass. Crowded House's Nick Seymour is such a worthy Bassist to study and emulate for supporting role, pocket playing foundation. His bass lines tastefully serve the music, are sophisticated, intelligently written, without overplaying
This is in my top 5 bands of all time. I've loved them for decades, and Split Enz too, which was a band before them by some of the same guys. For Crowded House, you want: (other that what you already reacted to): Fall At Your Feet, Something So Strong, Distant Sun, Sister Madly, Better Be Home Soon, She Called Up, Locked Out, I Feel Possessed, Into Temptation. Some of Neil's solo work is good too... like She Will Have Her Way, and Split Enz has I Got You, Six Months in a Leaky Boat... gosh, there's more, but there's a start. I have seen them live too and met Neil, and it was an amazing experience. Loved it.
Crowded House are one of my all time favourite bands, I've loved them since I was a kid. I finally got a chance to see them in the UK when they toured a couple of years ago. It was probably my last chance to see them and it was nearly scuppered by Covid but when I eventually got to see them they were amazing. So funny and friendly, they really engage with their audiences. It was a wonderful performance which I will never forget.
Yes , finally a New Zealand band ( Kiwi here). Voted more than once as Best Live Show. Neil Finn is basically NZ royalty . He was part of the Legendary Split Enz ( loved by Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder, who has preformed along side Finn). Message to my Girl is a must listen beautiful song. Other Kiwis to check out Lorde, Benee , Broods, Dave Dobbyn , Kimbra ( with Gotye) and Bic Runga just to name a few 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
I've watched this many times and this is the first time I've noticed the the two sailors to the immediate right look like they are could break at any time with sadness. But very bravely hold it together in the line of duty.❤
Amber's smile around 2:36 is what I love to see. I highly recommend ANYTIME, Distant Sun, She Will Have Her Way, World Where You Live, Pineapple Head, Mean to Me (this was my morning jam as I drove to work. While I loved every single song on this album, I HAD to hear this first and last before I got out of my truck), TURN AND RUN (stunning), Sister Madly, She Goes On, Amsterdam, Instinct, The Climber, ANGEL'S HEAP, Cry Wolf, When You Come, Don't Dream It's Over, THROW YOUR ARMS AROUND ME, BETTER BE HOME SOON, Oh Hi, Elephants...and, I have to stop or I'll end up listing every song, including songs he performed, but didn't write yet still made so very much his (with no slight to the songwriters and original performers). Also, check out the song he and Shawn Colvin performed together, What I Get Paid For. I love that his fingerprints are all over it, but he's only subtly present. Mad props to Neil and Sharon for being married 42 years, raising great kids who are also musicians and now part of Crowded House. They've recorded together (on 7 Worlds Collide [Little by Little] and their project Pajama Club). Pretty dang amazing, if you ask me! I also can't end this comment without adding this: Don't Dream It's Over, as sung by Tim Minchin (Rob, Amber, if you haven't delved into the genius of this man, you must!). Tim's version is beautifully heartbreaking. It was recorded for the Australian campaign for Motor neuron disease (ALS aka Lou Gehrig's disease). I recommend you watch the Crowded House version first. Then, when you see the video for the campaign...it'll hit you like a ton of bricks. Thank you for giving time to Crowded House and the genius of Neil Finn. I'm so glad you found this music! P.S. please let us know on the next Crowded House song you share which of their songs you've been playing for you and your family. (Kids loooove Crowded House.) Sending you love, curiosity, joy, and contentment
Crowded House were HUGE in the 90s. Their free "Farewell to the World" charity concert on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House was EPIC! You will also know Neil Finn from the closing credits of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" when he sings "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold."
Absolutely. I’ve been at a live show of Neil’s in a small club where the entire audience sang the chorus at him and his solo band, and the whole room was magic. And if you know how beautifully melancholic that song is, to say that it was a *joyful* moment is saying something.
I moved from NY to Australia 15 years ago. Great concerts are few and far between down here. Crowded house a few years ago was one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen. Neil Finn now has his two sons in the band on guitar, drums and backing vocals… and they simply getting better with age. Try “Locked Out”, “It’s only natural”, “Four seasons in one day”, “ Better be Home soon, “Sister Madly”… they have dozens of classics. And it’s worth hearing Neil’s earlier band Split Enz … start with “One Step Ahead”. You have stumbled into a NZ/Aus rabbit hole of wonders.
Yes, I remember Paul McCarthy was once asked what it was like to be regarded as the best singer-songwriter of all time .. He replied, "I don't know , you need to ask Neil Finn.
Love that you guys have covered some Crowded House. Neil Finn is an amazing singer/songwriter. One Crowded House song that is a stand out for me is Instinct. ❤️
I was only listening to this yesterday. I’m glad you’re delving into this great band. There are 3 members of this band, lead singer Neil Finn, Nick Seymour on bass. RIP to the drummer, Paul Hester. 🕊
You should check out Neil's earlier stuff with Split Enz a New Zealand band he was in with his brother Tim, it's another rabbit hole worth diving into.
Adding to the songs to listen to are: It's only natural, in to temptation, when you come, distant sun, fall at your feet, world where you live, pineapple head and Four seasons in one day. Four seasons in one day probably one of my favourites.
Be sure to check out House Martins song Caravan of Love from the same era as Crowded House and similar in vocal style. It was the first band of Paul Heaton of Beautiful South and Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim. Also the band James were massive around this time. Their song Sit Down was an anthem at the time in the early 90s UK.
The Finn brothers have made such amazing music either as Crowded House or Split Enz. One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard is by Tim Finn (solo) and called Persuasion.
This was the only Crowded House CD with both Finn Brothers, that's why the harmonies are so exceptional. In fact this was originally going to be a Finn Brothers CD, but instead Tim joined the band and turned it into a Crowded House CD.
I got to see them live last week, because they are touring the US. Fantastic show. They played "Into Temptation", which is my favorite Crowded House song.
I was 5 years old,(1967), the first time I heard this song. 68 A.M WRKO in Boston had solid gold Saturday night, that's where I heard All the great music from the 50's and early sixties. Something about this song got me at that tender age, and even in my.Van Halen Led Zeppelin teens I still enjoyed this song, and other "soda pop shop" oldies, I just wouldn't admit it to my cool buddies 😂.
Takes me back. My Mum had the album this was on, Woodface. One of the albums that got a lot of play in the CD changer in her car, so always remember this song very fondly.
Better be Home soon, Four Seasons in one Day, Fall at your Feet, … and then farther along in their amazing catalog. Can‘t wait to see them live again next year in Cologne.
Australia has a lot of people who were born overseas, like the US. The groups or artists below either formed or started their professional careers in Australia. Some moved overseas for larger audiences or later on for tax or lifestyle purposes. Aussie performers you have covered: AC/DC (3 members born in Scotland, moved over while children. Phil (drums) is Aussie born, Brian is English) Air Supply (formed in Australia with one of the two members from England) Andy Gibb (this is probably the most arguable along with Natalie. Andy moved back and forth between Australia and the UK, his first single was in Australia) Bee Gees (3 brothers born on the Isle of Man, Barry was ~12 when they moved to Australia) Cold Chisel (singer born in Scotland, moved when 5, drummer born in England, moved when 17) Crowded House (formed in Australia with one Kiwi and two Aussies) Divinyls Helen Reddy Icehouse INXS John Farnham (English born, moved when he was 10) John Paul Young (born in Scotland, moved when he was 11) Keith Urban (born New Zealand, moved when he was 2) Kylie Minogue Little River Band (Included English and Dutch born founding members) Men at Work (Colin born in Scotland, moved at 14) Midnight Oil Natalie Imbruglia (didn't start singing career until she was in England, was Australian soap actress before that and widely known in the UK because of it) Olivia Newton-John (born in England, moved when she was 5) Rick Springfield Savage Garden (Daniel born in England, moved when a year old) The Seekers (Keith born in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka) Peeps let me know if I have missed any.
so i was prompted to google Neil Finn (because obviously he's nz born) and figure out where he lives now (thought hw as living in Australia but I think he's in the UK). Turns out his mother is Irish.
One of my favorite songs by a truly outstanding band. Neill Finn is an incredible songwriter and while they're mostly known for "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Something So Strong" in the US, they have a deep catalog of fantastic songs. Just skimming the comments, a lot of other people have named some - you won't go wrong with any of them. Also, check out his previous band, Split Enz - he and his brother, Tim, had some great songs there including "I Got You" and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat." Great review.
"Better be Home Soon", "When You Come", "It´s Only Natural" or "Pineapple Head" are some of their best. You should watch their final concert at Sidney 1996 video. Its amazing seeing their live.
Neil Finn used to be in an iconic New Zealand band with his brother Tim, the band was Split Enz and they had some awesome music from the 80's such as "Poor boy", "I see red", "History never repeats" "Six months in a leaky boat"
Neil Finn is one of the unsung greatest singer songwriters ever. I've followed him since Split Enz a band way ahead of its time. Him and brother Tim have incredible voices that go together as well as Lennon/McCartney's or Simon and Garfunkel's. From the self titled Crowded House, or my personal favorite Temple of Low Men, to the magnificent Woodface, or his two great solo records, Neil is a musical treasure. There is so much material you can react to, which is great and i hope you will.

@@JoanieBC This is a great point 😄👶
Absolutely incredible from a guy who knows how to write a couple decent songs😂🇦🇺
grew up with this song on the radio all the time.
Four seasons in one day is still on my car playlist.....
“Not the girl you think you are” will make you cry in the best way
Love a bit of Crowded House, Neil Finn's lyrics are always spot on. Love the line in this "do I lie like a lounge-room lizard, or do I sing like a bird released?" Distant Sun and Fall at Your Feet are great songs of theirs too.
"Distant Sun" and Fall at Your Feet"
Pineapple Head!
This was is regarded in the UK as the best release from Oz's best band. Memorable track beautifully constructed and impossible to get out of your head.
Never heard this group before . Thanks for introducing me to their music. They sound great and I like them . 😃
What a band neil finn a songwriting genius and amber just rocking that hairstyle 🔥🔥
For those interested in the Bass. Crowded House's Nick Seymour is such a worthy Bassist to study and emulate for supporting role, pocket playing foundation. His bass lines tastefully serve the music, are sophisticated, intelligently written, without overplaying
This marvelous song is so evocative of my childhood's Summer memories. Everytime i hear it, i am transported to those good, simple, happier times.
Their band was basically Split Enz before evolving to Crowded House...
Check out Split Enz ' message to my girl '
Loved it.
Four seasons, fall at your feet and distant sun. Love them all.❤ Also fall at your feet has those good harmonies that we all like
Crowded House are one of my all time favourite bands, I've loved them since I was a kid.
RIP Paul Hester
Such a fun, beautiful and talented soul
💯♥️🇦🇺
Great band with some of the best songs ever written. Wonderful live.
Yes!! This is one of my favourite songs ever, and almost nobody is ever reacting to it!! So underrated! Thank you so much, glad you liked it 😊
You need to check out their previous band - Split Enz and the song "I Hope I Never" It is one of the most beautifully written songs ever!
Four Seasons in one day, is stunning by them!
Absolutely. I’ve been at a live show of Neil’s in a small club where the entire audience sang the chorus at him and his solo band, and the whole room was magic. And if you know how beautifully melancholic that song is, to say that it was a *joyful* moment is saying something.
@@grampafitness9732 oh cool! Sounds amazing 😍
Private Universe is amazing.
Another we’re seeing right after you watch them. One of my favorite bands. On constant rotation in my car’s cassette player.
My absolute favorite by them is private universe.
Yes, I remember Paul McCarthy was once asked what it was like to be regarded as the best singer-songwriter of all time .. He replied, "I don't know , you need to ask Neil Finn.
One of my favorite songs.....live it
Love that you guys have covered some Crowded House.
Their song Sit Down was an anthem at the time in the early 90s UK.
the whole album was just fantastic!!!! "Hole In The River" always gets me in the heart!
Awesome! I saw them in concert last weekend!
I got to see them live last week, because they are touring the US. Fantastic show. They played "Into Temptation", which is my favorite Crowded House song.
Love Crowded House. The album this is from is top tier. Happy to see you appreciate this band too ❤❤
Jay is so right about the airyness and lightness of this song.
Mi-Sex - "Computer Games". From 1979. A New Zealand band.
Love this tune ❤
I was 5 years old,(1967), the first time I heard this song. 68 A.M WRKO in Boston had solid gold Saturday night, that's where I heard All the great music from the 50's and early sixties. Something about this song got me at that tender age, and even in my.Van Halen Led Zeppelin teens I still enjoyed this song, and other "soda pop shop" oldies, I just wouldn't admit it to my cool buddies 😂.
I saw Crowded House and came running!
One of my favourite bands growing up. Such a summery sound, reminds me of childhood holidays.
In time, after discovering more of the ' Crowdies',you could go back a little further to the band that Neil and co. started out from Split ENZ
Yes Splitenz was a quirky, cool group... Both have awesome songs.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs in the world! They are fabulous live!
Australia has a lot of people who were born overseas, like the US. The groups or artists below either formed or started their professional careers in Australia. Some moved overseas for larger audiences or later on for tax or lifestyle purposes.
Aussie performers you have covered:
AC/DC (3 members born in Scotland, moved over while children. Phil (drums) is Aussie born, Brian is English)
Air Supply (formed in Australia with one of the two members from England)
Andy Gibb (this is probably the most arguable along with Natalie. Andy moved back and forth between Australia and the UK, his first single was in Australia)
Bee Gees (3 brothers born on the Isle of Man, Barry was ~12 when they moved to Australia)
Cold Chisel (singer born in Scotland, moved when 5, drummer born in England, moved when 17)
Crowded House (formed in Australia with one Kiwi and two Aussies)
Divinyls
Helen Reddy
Icehouse
INXS
John Farnham (English born, moved when he was 10)
John Paul Young (born in Scotland, moved when he was 11)
Keith Urban (born New Zealand, moved when he was 2)
Kylie Minogue
Little River Band (Included English and Dutch born founding members)
Men at Work (Colin born in Scotland, moved at 14)
Midnight Oil
Natalie Imbruglia (didn't start singing career until she was in England, was Australian soap actress before that and widely known in the UK because of it)
Olivia Newton-John (born in England, moved when she was 5)
Rick Springfield
Savage Garden (Daniel born in England, moved when a year old)
The Seekers (Keith born in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka)
Peeps let me know if I have missed any.
so i was prompted to google Neil Finn (because obviously he's nz born) and figure out where he lives now (thought hw as living in Australia but I think he's in the UK).
Crowded house message to my girl is a great song
"Better be Home Soon", "When You Come", "It´s Only Natural" or "Pineapple Head" are some of their best. You should watch their final concert at Sidney 1996 video. Its amazing seeing their live.
Neil Finn used to be in an iconic New Zealand band with his brother Tim, the band was Split Enz and they had some awesome music from the 80's such as "Poor boy", "I see red", "History never repeats" "Six months in a leaky boat"
Thank you both!!, for reacting to this group 😂....
Cheerio from Down Under 🌺
"Love This Life" is another great one not listed below.
These boys have so much talent, proud to be a Kiwi and I live in Waikato too, magic, Thanks for listening to them as New Zealand is a very special place to be.
YAY! you guys are gonna love this
The Finn brothers are brilliant 👏
