I just bought this a couple of days ago and it rides really well. I've ridden it on paved bike trails, and a little bit of dirt and mud. It holds up really well so far. The brakes are phenomenal; never afraid to start peddling down-hill. I've been told to not to do jumps on this bike due to the wheels being prone to bend, but any easy down-hill rides without too difficult of an obstacle, it'll do just fine.
Ride it til the parts wear out. Replace shocks with XCR or TK30. Upgrade drive train with Acera 8 speed. Done. Tourney will wear out in one winter from salt, dirt from being made of cheap steel and plastic. Works, but not forever.
The marlin 5 cannot have more than 7 speed because of the hub i have the 2019 and its a freewheel not cassette if i swap to a cassette can i get more gears?
Great review. My suggestion to anyone looking at buying one is to look at the 6 too. It just has a few nicer bits and pieces really and it’s not that much of a price jump. As soon as lockdown is over in the uk and we’re back to normal, I’m gonna go buy one. My brother bought the 6 a few weeks ago and I’m in love
The 6 is a nice parts upgrade. Slippery slope when going up the food chain. There is always something "better" and for "only a little more". Lol, guilty of doing this myself!
I think Trek could at least bump the group set up to Altus or Alivio. IMO there’s no excuse for LBS to offer bikes with WM level drivetrains. That being said, the Hydraulic brakes are a nice touch over the usual shifter/break lever combo usually found on “tourney” level bikes. Great review, JTBG!
Brakes, fork, drivetrain, and wheels. Luckily all of those can be upgraded to turn your normal marlin 6 into a xcaliber9 level bike. It's cheaper if you buy the higher end marlin 8 instead of upgrading the 5 or 6 but with current shortage good luck finding even the marlin 4.

Plus a orginal 8 stem. I prefer to build my own around a frame so I could push the frame to it max build. I do love the frame. It is a lot lighter than my schwinn boundary and my mongoose xr.
@Gerald Powell Which Alivio derailleurs did you get? I've got a 2019/2020 Marlin 5 as well and would like to upgrade the TY300 derailleurs to Alivio but keep the 3x7 drivetrain... would it be possible to just slap in an RD-M4000 and call it a day without touching anything else?
TREK needs to up it's game. The drivetrain is big-box material and the straight head tube is heading in the same direction. I considered this bike as a cheap way to start MTBing and upgrading it down the road, but even if you upgrade every single component, the frame will still be a straight tube...
The drivetrain is way above big box, let's not generalize a 3x7 as big box. This is a cassette, hydro brakes, full Shimano shifters, and crankset. As far as the steerer is concerned. 99% of riders either won't care for their usage nor would they upgrade the bike's fork. Keep in mind a fork is significant in cost and you could be in an x-caliber for the cost of an air fork and install.
