    I just bought this a couple of days ago and it rides really well. I've ridden it on paved bike trails, and a little bit of dirt and mud. It holds up really well so far. The brakes are phenomenal; never afraid to start peddling down-hill. I've been told to not to do jumps on this bike due to the wheels being prone to bend, but any easy down-hill rides without too difficult of an obstacle, it'll do just fine.

    Ride it til the parts wear out. Replace shocks with XCR or TK30. Upgrade drive train with Acera 8 speed. Done. Tourney will wear out in one winter from salt, dirt from being made of cheap steel and plastic. Works, but not forever.

    Great review. My suggestion to anyone looking at buying one is to look at the 6 too. It just has a few nicer bits and pieces really and it’s not that much of a price jump. As soon as lockdown is over in the uk and we’re back to normal, I’m gonna go buy one. My brother bought the 6 a few weeks ago and I’m in love

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  4 года назад +2

      The 6 is a nice parts upgrade. Slippery slope when going up the food chain. There is always something "better" and for "only a little more". Lol, guilty of doing this myself!

    I think Trek could at least bump the group set up to Altus or Alivio. IMO there’s no excuse for LBS to offer bikes with WM level drivetrains. That being said, the Hydraulic brakes are a nice touch over the usual shifter/break lever combo usually found on “tourney” level bikes. Great review, JTBG!

      Brakes, fork, drivetrain, and wheels. Luckily all of those can be upgraded to turn your normal marlin 6 into a xcaliber9 level bike. It's cheaper if you buy the higher end marlin 8 instead of upgrading the 5 or 6 but with current shortage good luck finding even the marlin 4.

      @Gerald Powell Which Alivio derailleurs did you get? I've got a 2019/2020 Marlin 5 as well and would like to upgrade the TY300 derailleurs to Alivio but keep the 3x7 drivetrain... would it be possible to just slap in an RD-M4000 and call it a day without touching anything else?

  • @julieleenaers313
    @julieleenaers313 4 года назад

    TREK needs to up it's game. The drivetrain is big-box material and the straight head tube is heading in the same direction.
    I considered this bike as a cheap way to start MTBing and upgrading it down the road, but even if you upgrade every single component, the frame will still be a straight tube...

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  4 года назад +1

      The drivetrain is way above big box, let's not generalize a 3x7 as big box. This is a cassette, hydro brakes, full Shimano shifters, and crankset. As far as the steerer is concerned. 99% of riders either won't care for their usage nor would they upgrade the bike's fork. Keep in mind a fork is significant in cost and you could be in an x-caliber for the cost of an air fork and install.

    • @julieleenaers313
      @julieleenaers313 4 года назад

      @@Jamesthebikeguy I don't see any company using 3x7 as standard, unless on cheaper bikes. On a 500USD bike, they should at least stick with a 2x8 or even a 1x9 or 1x10.
      So yes, to me, this is bigbox stuff. Shimano, sram, plated in gold, it's old tech.

    Some people complain about trek pricing. From what I’ve found they are priced very well. Some competitors of certain models may be a little less expensive, sometimes more. Maybe better components on one part, but not as good on another. Sometimes it differs bike to bike too. The 2020 roscoe 7 is one of the best values I’ve seen.
    The stache is a little over priced, but the geometry is amazing. I don’t want to go on a rant so I’ll stop now.

    Don't buy this for mtb, you are gonna regret not paying more for something better for mtb. I know you are probably getting in the sport but within months you are gonna wish you paid for something better. I made the mistake last year. There's basicaly no upgrade logicaly possible on the 5 (free wheel hub). Really bad fork, change the derailleur asap, need something with a clutch. You are gonna hate this bike for mtb. Excellent commuter though, confortable on long run, and alright on a little bit of off road. If you are not sure you like mtb, buy this and be prepares to buy something else next year. Just dont use this bike as a reference if you like mtb or not.

      Depends how hard core you are going. For dirt streets and family trail rides this is great.

    Today 8/11/2020 was the last time i will use my Trek Marlin 5. its a very slow and heavy bike. even though i change the size of tires from the 29 it brings to a 700x38
    the fastest speed on that bike on gravel is 10 miles. changing the 29 tire to a 700 jump bump the speed to 11 miles per hour.

    How much it costs in US? This is a crap bike! Trek's bikes are expensive with crappy basic specs. I own the Cannondale Trail 5 2020, which comes with 9x2, bolted crankset where I can also change chainring easily without buying a whole new crankset again like the Trek which is riveted, XCM 30 fork with remote lockout and preload adjuster, MT200 Shimano hydraulic brakes, 2 bottle cages, equipped with Acera and Altus and rear hub is compatible with a 10 speed cassette and costs $675 in my country. I use it as my XC bike. So, if the Trek costs around $500, better go with the Cannondale Trail 5 2020.
