Amazing! I'm downtown PHX. Just got my Marlin 5, 3 weeks ago. My first upgrade, day one, was the pedals. I saw the stock ones and knew. I got metal w/spikes. I can tell tires are next. I'm already shopping, but first, I'm wearing the stock down on the streets. I haven't ridden in 20 years, so I'm running and gunning in traffic to clear the cobwebs. Grips, maybe next, but I'm having trouble with the squishy shifter. It's soft and loose. I'm having no problem with the saddle or post, but the spike peddles have bitten my shins a bit. It's all good.
Thanks for this post. I just purchased this bike on Sunday. I’m 42 and I was 14 when I last had a bike. This entry bike is a bit over my head. I am over the weight limit but my fitness journey should have me under the weight limit by spring. I am easing into this and I appreciate the videos and knowledge you share!
Thank you, my friend, for taking the time to watch our video and leave your comments. Both are very much appreciated. Please keep us posted as your journey unfolds and always adventure safe.
Bought that exact same bike in 2021 when the bike shortage was still a thing. Switched out the drivetrain, seat, grips and tires. Hated those tires. Put 7k on it in the two years I rode it before upgrading to the Roscoe 8 last year. I totally agreee about the need for a dropper post. It's one of the main reasons I hate riding my Marlin when my Roscoe isn't available. Overall I believe the Marlin is a great starter bike. Great video.
@@bigelvis1485 we certainly appreciate you adding to the conversation, my friend. I’m glad to hear the Marlon and Roscoe have served you well. Thank you for your feedback as well as your support. Adventure safely.
Got the gen 2 m 5 last April. First non department store bike for me. Our riding season is a little different in Canada, another month waiting for the snow to go. This winter I replaced the saddle and the grips, pedals are next to take care of the contact points. Tires I may have a year or two left with our short season. Shoveled the driveway yesterday, an hour later it needed to be done again. Calling for a foot on Thursday, hopefully the last blast, so I can trade the shovel for the bike and check out the upgrades.
Man, at least you are getting after when you can, which is awesome. Thank you for taking the time to watch our video and add to the conversation. Please, keep us posted on how the upgrades work for you and adventure safely.
That is awesome, Brent. I'm sure he will have miles of enjoyment. Thank you so much for watching the video. We appreciate your support and apologize for our related response. It has been a bit crazy around here lately. Tell Brandon I said hey, when you see him Friday! Keep us posted on how your son likes the bike.
Yup, have that exact bike. Did the seat first and did the pedals and Maxxis Ardent race tires when the old ones wore out. And I also did the Deore 1x10 drivetrain as I really wanted a Marlin 7 but the wait list was a year and I didn't wanna wait for it.
I appreciate you taking the time to add to the conversation, my friend. I'm sorry it took so long to respond. I'm glad to hear that. You are enjoying your Marlon. Adventure safely.
Wow. They actually came down since we bought my son one last year. We paid $700. It actually smokes my 5 year old Marlin 7 because the industry as a whole has changed since. Also. +1 on the Chesters and the XR2s are basically a coarse gravel tire with minimal grip on anything loose.
The industry has changed a lot over the last several years. Today's technology and advancements are far superior to what we had even five years ago. It will be interesting to see what is released over the next 2 to 3 years. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our video and leave your feedback. Both are sincerely appreciated.
Great list! I've got a Rockhopper I've been riding that's had all of these upgrades except for a dropper post. Honestly, though, I was afraid you might suggest converting to a 1x. I'm glad that that fad of making everything a 1x for no reason is settling down again.
Thank you for watching Katt and sharing your experiences with upgrades. And we agree not everything has to be a 1x. In some instances, it's prudent, but there are better places to allocate your funds. Thanks again for watching, and adventure safe.
Hi, I was wondering what tires i should get for my 2023 Trek Marlin 5? I'm currently considering the Maxxis Minion DHF (29x2.3) on the front and the WTB Trail Boss (2.25x29) on the back. I'm relatively new to the world of mountain biking (only been riding for a couple of months) and aren't sure if these will fit correctly. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Love your vids btw.
I'm sorry it took so long to reply, my friend. We appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback. I am a Maxxis guy, and I ride the Ardents front and rear on my Fuel EX with a slightly larger one in the front. Now, depending on your region, you may need something else. I would stop by your local shop and ask them what they recommend for your riding style. I don't believe you'll ever be disappointed with Maxxis.
Interesting! I just bought a Roscoe 9, which obviously isn't the same bike, but since it's also a hardtail from Trek, I thought this list might be useful! Unfortunately, other than new grips, the rest doesn't really relate 😅
Yeah, your Roscoe 9 is fully equipped out of the gate. I do want to say thank you for taking the time to watch and add to the conversation. I apologize for the lateness in my response. I've been traveling the last several days.
I remember Pineapple Express. I’m up in here tryna get a mother f***in scholarship! lol cool information. I did do all of those upgrades except for drooper post. It made a difference believe it or not.
lol, it's actually from the "Breakfast Club." Please take a look at the link below. ruclips.net/video/7VIG3SdCiSA/видео.htmlsi=pvmSVhftKqUix_LO Thank you for watching the video and giving us your feedback. I am happy that these upgrades made a difference for you.
I would skip the dropper post and install a nice air Fork instead.... I would set the tires up tubeless instead of replacing the stock saddle .... pedals and grips yes replace them and when you wear out the stock tires upgrade to a nice set
The rims that come stock with the marlin five are not tubeless-ready. He would have to purchase a whole new rim set. This is why we didn't suggest going to tubeless tires. Although, I do like where you were going with that. I am a firm believer that the entire world should be tubeless, lol. Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave your feedback, my friend. Both are sincerely appreciated.
Got my marlin 5, 2 years ago. Not riding trails as much as i thought but i want to keep it around for when i do get the urge. Until i can save up for amother bike, does it make sense to change the marlin to a 1x? And maybe switch to a hybrid tire for the time being?
Great question, and thank you for asking, my friend. You can switch it to a 1x. This is basically personal preference. Understand, though, if you do this, you will need to make adjustments to the rear cassette. Other than that, I see no reason why you can't. As far as tires go, yes, by all means, change it to a style that is suited to what you are writing at the moment. You can always switch to a more aggressive tread later if you start hitting the trails.
I have a Marlin 5 in my bike fleet and I’m going balls to the wall on the upgrades. The lifetime guarantee on the frame is a great thing and honestly I like to piss off the Marlin haters. 😂😆😜🤘✌️
I am about to get a Marlin but can't decide between the old and new version. Would you recommend getting Marlin 5 Gen 2 (2023) for $800 cad or Marlin 5 Gen 3 (2024) for $930 cad?
Hey Ross, thank you for taking the time to watch our video and ask your question. With all the refinements of Gen 3, it really is the way to go. The front suspension is the biggest one, in my opinion. Either way, you'd get a fun bike that provides miles upon miles of fun and adventure. I hope this answer is helpful for you.
I have a Marlin 5, same color as in the video. Biggest issue on the trail is shifting the front derailleur, a 2X. If I could do it again, would have paid another $50 for the 6 and got a 1X in front and 10X in back. With a 2X in front you have to plan well ahead.
I have a marlin 5 and am thinking about getting that pine dropped post, which one would give me the most drop in the seat the 100mm or 90mm? Also is that something you guys would install in store if brought in?
Yes, if you were to purchase any dropper post, Brandon and his team would be happy to install it for you. Bring the bike by the shop so they can measure your seat tube and give you the best options to maximize your drop.
correctamundo my friend. Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave your feedback. Both are appreciated. I apologize for the delayed response, I've been traveling a lot lately and I've had limited access.
