    Corrections / Updates to video:
    1) The Marlin 5 and 6 actually both use the SR Suntour XCT 30 fork. The Marlin 5 uses the XCM only in the XXS frame size.
    2) The 2022 Marlin 7 is the same bike as the 2021 model, but has another color option and uses tubeless ready Bontrager Kovee TLR rims instead of the Bontrager Connection rims.
    3) All Marlins have 1-1/8'' head tubes, so they are not tapered.
    4) Technically none of these frames are internal dropper post compatible, but I have made a full video on that if you want more details.
    5) Some 2022 Marlins have been coming with MAXXIS Ikon tires, but this is likely only due to the shortage related to COVID. These tires have a more aggressive tread pattern than the Bontrager ones and also have a higher tpi, which essentially means they are a higher quality tire.

    • @TalalipopMTB
      @TalalipopMTB  3 года назад +4

      @@amBullseye They have a more aggressive tread pattern and are 60 tpi so they are higher quality. Not sure if they are tubeless ready but either way they are better in my opinion.

      not sure if you will see this, but one of my subscribers just mentioned that his brand new 2022 marlin 7 came with the connection rims that the 2021 marlin 7 came with. I went back to the trek website and now it shows that the marlin 7 comes with kovee or connection in all size frames except xs, but it does not mention why or how you would get one or the other. Have you seen this? Do you think it's also shortage issues?

    Thank you! Here in Costa Rica there is zero collaboration from the guys who sell Trek, they never respond to questions or deny information, for example, last year I asked for a Marlin 7 on M/L, they told me it was not possible as there is only M or L, I payed for the M and asked what model is the best (they never mentioned the M8) waited for months, once it was delivered it came with scratches and no lubrication, also, loose stem, they never provided any support (they only respond over whatsapp and normally after a couple of days as there is no email or phone number), asked for replacement parts and told me that they do not sell replacements for lower end bikes, I trust Trek but because of my experience here, videos like yours are the best way to really know what we are getting and you do it in a very professional way, I would love to have a guy like you working in my local shop

      He also mentioned that he would just go up to the GX derailleur as the SX just generally aren't great.

    Thank you for a great comparison! I have Marlin 7. It is not a bad bike, but I think that bike at this price point should have better frame. The frame should be with axles and a conical steering cup. And the welds must be processed. For the Marlin 4-5, this is excusable, but 6-8 must be devoid of these shortcomings in order to be competitive in 2023.

    This will be my first hybrid/mountain bike. I haven't ridden in years and coming off a road bike this will be a huge change for me. I want to stay off the streets and stick to trails, some paved, some gravel, some dirt to ride with friends. I looked at the Dual Sport and the Marlin. I have test ridden both (only very limited) and have decided to go with the Marlin 7. I liked the Marlin 5 but was intrigued with the crank on the 7. (I really like simple). My only reservation are the tires on the Marlin. That's a lot of tire for me and I asked about switching out to a less aggressive tire like on the Duel Sport. What would you suggest? Or, should I just suck it up and chalk it up to getting a better workout? btw - I'm a 77, 5'1" female. If I kill myself, the bike will be a nice item in my will. :-) Thanks in advance for your advice. PS. Love your analysis of the Marlin line.

    My 2022 Marlin 5 came with the brand "Radius" for the brakes instead of Trekfro. It definitely feels a lot more flimsy and I have to pull on it more to get the bike to stop. We called Trek support and they said they have changed it temporarily because of the supply chain issues but it is really infuriating that they substituted the brakes for an inferior product that doesn't even have a website online. Do you have experience with Trek substituting components? And is there any way to get them to exchange the brakes for the original? I'm contemplating if I should return the bike and wait for one to appear in a few months with the correct components as they are currently sold out in my area.

    GREAT video.. Please do a review on the 2022 Roscoe Lineup, especially since they now have a Roscoe 9 and it appears the frames are different. THANKS! 🇺🇸

    Forgive me if you mentioned this and I missed it, but the Marlin 8 only comes in XL, not XXL, for us tall guys!!

      Thank you!! And those rims and tires are not tubeless ready / compatible. There are ways to make rims and tires tubeless ready but these do not come ready

    I just bought my son a new Trek Marlin 5 and the bike shop said it was ready for trail riding, it's not.
    I now need to replace the front shock and brakes, I would have bought the Marlin 8 if I was told the truth, the Marlin 5 is not trail ready.

    Love your videos! New subscriber. This video helped me decide on a marlin 5, thank you! But LBS all out of stock, and they had some insane requirements on non refundable deposit I couldn't accept. I ordered a Polygon MTB instead. I'd love to see you do a video like this, comparing the polygon models, even though I've already ordered. They appear to be the most readily available bikes right now, and I read that they are the behind the scenes developer for other brands people love and trust already

      Thanks!! And hopefully I can get to Polygon soon; those bikes are pretty cool!

    In regards to the derailer, would I be better off getting the 7 and upgrading the tires if I don’t really need the air forks?

    Best summary/comparison anyone could ask for, well done! I picked up an M8 a few weeks ago and am still trying to get used to the SRAM shifter, but I love the bike. Do you think the derailleur is the weakest link?

    • @TalalipopMTB
      @TalalipopMTB  3 года назад +1

      Thank you!!! And yeah the derailleur in my opinion is the weakest link for sure

    i have a marlin 4. although this video says it is not for mountain biking, the midwest i can handle it fine. i was thinking of upgrading to a 5, would it be worth it?

    • @TalalipopMTB
      @TalalipopMTB  Год назад +1

      Awesome! And I feel like if you already have the 4, the 5 wouldn’t be a huge upgrade. I think the 5 is a noticeably better bike overall. What’s the price difference between the two for you?

    • @bacorny5980
      @bacorny5980 Год назад

      @@TalalipopMTB The price difference for me is sizable. I thought the marlin 4 was more on the expensive side even. Still affordable compared to other hardtails i have looked at.

      @@TalalipopMTBAlso what kind of trails can i take this thing up to? Would you think that it could handle a blue or should I stick to greens until I could upgrade?

    Great video, waiting for this, I was planned to buy Marlin 5 2022 model, but unfortunately in India, they hike the price up to 80$ to 100$ for various models. Last week I bought the Marin Bobcat trail 3, the price is very similar to 2022 Marlin 5, and have more features and more trail oriented (67.5 degree HT angle), also it have 120mm suspension and have XCM 30. I'm totally satisfied with my Marin Bobcat Trail 3. I hope you can do some video on Marin bikes as well. Thankyou..
