Updates/Corrections to video: 1) For the frame geometry, I accidentally swapped the bike names and images. The measurements are correct as stated in the video, but the order of the bikes in my geometry table should be, from left to right: Trek Marlin, Specialized Rockhopper, and then Giant Talon. Sorry about that error! 2) All of the Specialized Rockhopper models have increased in price by $100, so the Rockhopper Sport now costs $700 3) The Marlin 6 actually uses 100mm of travel in its size small as well, and only uses 80mm of travel for the xs size.
These are the best videos I’ve seen yet that do comparisons of the most popular models of the big brand bikes. Please continue with them .....great work.!
I can only agree with what KK has written, I only discovered your videos by chance. I am looking to buy an entry level hardtail and then fit a Bafang 1000kw Mid-Drive ,hopefully the bottom bracket on the bike I choose will be a ‘straight-through ‘ with no complications. Your videos are extremely good, simple and informative to a novice that wants to get into MB but only wants to bike British roads and off -road fire-tracks.Covid has given me more time to study this but there are so many videos it gets confusing to try and make a final decision, but I think yours will help me more than any others. The Talon 2 is the clear winner for me. I think I’m going grab it when my local bike shop gets its next shipment. Your videos have been so helpful for trying to buy a bike. Thanks!
I got the marlin 6 here in Phoenix, AZ. I wanted the marlin 7 but the availability right now is not there. Even the marlin 6 was hard to find. I called atleast 10 stores and finally landis cyclery had it lol.
Because of the pandemic it's not easy to get your hands on any bike nowadays. However, I was able to get a base Rockhopper back in August and I'm loving it. It does really well in rough terrain and hardcore trails.
Rockhopper has always been an iconic exception of "budget", lower level bikes. Nobody can be ashamed of a rockhopper. Capable, balanced and Upgradable.
I had Rockhopper and Talon, both are amazing bikes, even you are beginner or intermediate ciclist, very oriented to be upgraded whit better components.
Just got my marlin 7 yesterday I’m so pumped on it it’s a beautiful bike I have a marlin 6 too but I’m inexperienced in mountain biking so I’m learning about it and how these bikes work
Great video! I've been bikepacking for 8 years and evolved a Boardman 27.5 hardtail. I like the straight handlebar, front suspension and wider tyres, hence gravel bike is a non starter. The Boardman is now worn out and I've upgraded to the Talon. With tubolito inners, weight is less than 13kg. I've added seat post suspension for further comfort. Never got on with 29 for bikepacking and gearing with the single chain ring is actually ideal.
Thanks for the video. I just got my son a Talon 2. He’s 6 foot 2 so when I called all my local shops that was the only XL entry level bike available. Looks like I got lucky !
i ride a Trek Marlin 4 2017, and i thought it was pretty nice until I felt a full carbon FSR bike (Cannondale Trigger 3 2019). my friend also has the Trek Marlin 6, so i hope to buy one of those soon.
Just bought my very first mtb the Talon 2 a couple days ago. I was looking for the Marlin 6 but at this point of the year most of the local bike shops here are out of stock. But luck have served me well and I found an XS Talon 2 (which is perfect for my size) for roughly below 500$ (converted to USD) and it had the UK groupset components. Looking at the price range, for me I struck a great deal! Thank you for these types of videos! It's a pain to look through their websites for hours for their comparisons. Also, let me know which parts should I uprgade first.
I literally asked this exact comparison question just today. And lo and behold, there's a video! Nice! Although I added the Cannondale Trail in my question. I am leaning toward the Talon however.
Which one would you choose between these 2021 models that MSRP between $750 to $850? Trek Marlin 7, Giant Talon 1, Jamis Highpoint A2 or Kona Lava Dome?
what about tapered heattubes? Any of them has it? I assume it is good for fork upgradability. Second - what about possibility to install a drop post in all of those?
Giant makes frames for trek and specialized so there's not much of a difference in frames but the giant talon beats beats all at certain price groups..
Newsflash, the Talon 1 does NOT come with an air fork and NOT with tubeless ready tires! I just came back from a 4 hr trip to buy this bike, just to learn that due to the global supply chain crisis they just don't include those anymore. I left without buying. Whole day for nothing. Giant customer care was less than helpful too. I'm sure it's supposed to be a good bike but without customer service and random components installed, it seems a bit risky to buy. Better choose a brand with customer service and better communication on their website.
I just bought the talon 2 on 12/31/21 and prices have increased dramatically. I paid $818 OTD. This inflation is killing us. My talon 2 Comes with ardent tires which I guess is tubeless ready!!!
What is the best all around bike? I am from Los Angeles and want a bike that I can ride in the streets but can also take on gravel, dirt roads and to hit some medium trails in the hills/mountains nothing to crazy though. In the budget range of 1000-1500$ I know it is not too much but maybe I can upgrade the bike later done the line.
I typically lean toward the middle of the range bikes for the best all around bike, since they have more speeds for road and commuting purposes. So something like the marlin 6 would be better than the marlin 7 in my personal opinion, although you can argue the other way as well. I think the rockhopper and marlin mentioned in the comparison could both work well for your purpose.
If you are intending to have bike for more than 5 years and going to ride bike, the best bike shop in a Trek bike shop and what they sell is the best bike, sometimes other brands too. Usually they offer free tune ups
I’m thinking of buying either the Talon 2 or Marlin 6. I often ride with friends in town or go one dirt trails and occasional jumping and so on and I’d like to know which of the two would be better for me.
For the trails and jumping the talon is probably better while the marlin 6 would be a bit better for around town use. I’d say the talon in this case because although you might lose some incremental gears, it shouldn’t be too noticeable unless you are riding for longer periods of time on the road.
just a question for whoever is willing to answer, but does the giant talon 2 come with a one-by drive train in canada as well? or does it have a two-by?
Hello Talalipop. My query is more about the way you buy than the brand or model to be bought. I definitely get carried away by the design, and in this sense I like Trek more than the rest of the brands, I have no experience in riding bikes off paved roads, but I do not want to miss an opportunity to share with my son if the case comes. So the Marlin model was the one that caught my attention. Then the Marlin 5 was chosen, a little for the color and later because I think its price and performance ratio is ideal. I live in Venezuela and here it is complicated to think about authorized agents and those things, fortunately I have a sister who lives in the USA. The question is the following: Can I get these bikes on credit from a store in the USA or must the purchase be for the full price?
I know Trek offers financing for bikes to play less up front, though I don’t know all of those details specifically too well. Trek also does ship bikes to most countries, though I know lots of bikes are out of stock right now.
I bought a Talon 2 just recently for my son. He loves riding it. Compared to his ‘98 dual sus hand me down I gave him. It’s in the concrete color. I like it a lot. Different animal compared to my Stance.
