I'm glad somebody mentioned that scary Mario Sunshine video, I remember also watching it and getting scarred for my entire childhood.
In the 80s, your average 8 year old was watching Nightmare on Elm Street & Child's Play. Childhood trauma occurred when you rented an 18+ anime with a rape scene in it.

I actually remember that Club Penguin video! It wasn't about the Rainbow Puffle, but it was about getting a Beta Hat. I guess this guy made a series of videos like this, because it also said to get closer to the screen. He was using a robotic text to speech voice as well. The jumpscare was a loud scream and a picture of Jeff the Killer. I've never seen that picture before, so I literally jumped out of my chair. Of course, the video also had an Unregistered Hypercam 2 logo in the top left.
I'm sure the video you remember did exist, that sounds familiar too! I didn't go into detail with it in the video, but the jumpscare in the rainbow Puffle video was most likely a loud scream, can't remember, but I do remember the image on screen was of old, cracked dolls or something. It was a group of these old dilapidated dolls, I can clearly remember it. Most likely it's gone now though, as if 2008 me could find it but 2018 can't, and it was titled something so basic, I doubt I'd be able to find it again. Love stuff like this though, thanks for sharing!

@@PatMacYT I remember this one video that was call Club Penguin Hacks Working 2015, which oddly had that same loud scream with jeff the killer on it. I think that was the name of the video, but there could've been a series of them.

I want to see a remake of the original Smash 64 commercial with updated costumes and effects for Ultimate, though I heavily doubt it’s going to happen, then again it IS basically the 20th anniversary game and celebrating everything Smash Bros has been over the years so there’s a small chance it might happen.

I can't believe im not the only one who saw the scary mario commercial. There was a similar video I once saw way before the 3DS came out that was titled "all portrait ghost photos + luigi's mansion 2 commercial!!" and after showing all the portraits for the ghosts, a screen that said "now the moment you've been waiting for... heh heh" popped up and there was a jump scare. It actually said 'heh heh' unironically. I was a smart kid.

Did KCL not do the Mario & Sonic Olympics commercials? Those used mascot costumes
I believe those were handled by SEGA themselves, not KCL. That’s why the newer ones used the modern Sonic costume we see everywhere. Now that you mention it, that’d make for a fun sequel video to this!

YES I REMEMBER THE RAINBOW PUFFLE VIDEO! I’ve seriously been trying to find that for years it scared my little 5 year old heart so bad that i literally turned off the computer and didn’t touch it for 3 days. You don’t know how happy I am someone remembers this. Thank you..
It would be nice to see costumes again. I'm sure if they did adverts with them, the costumes could be used again for some Nintendo Direct and Treehouse shenanigans or something. Also, they would have been great for a Super Mario Party advert, like seeing Goomba puzzled over how to do a minigame without arms or the like.
I love the charm old Nintendo commercials had, wish they'd go back to costumes and original animations, instead of just people playing the console and games.
I don't remember ever seeing adverts like these in the UK which is saddening. I'd love to see something wacky and charming like the ones here.

Sadly, those new commercials are the only way to Nintendo to look mature. Have you noticed kids liking Nintendo more and saying it's cool?
I would be more tempted not to skip them if they were fun like these.

When RUclips algorithm finally recommends something good. Great video, I still remember many of these (Cartoon Network in Latin America was the one channel that always played them). A few details I picked here:
1. The Kirby commercial was filmed in Universal Studios Hollywood (you can tell from the tunnel crossroad, that now has the King Kong 360 attraction on the tour, and Courthouse Square that was featured in Back to the Future).
2. The Super Mario Strikers was POPULAR here in Latin America since all the region loves football like crazy and got airtime even in 2006 thanks to the World Cup in Germany.
PS. Yes that Smash commercial was key in asking for the game in summer of '99 back when I was 6 years old.
The part where Kirby walks across the “finger manhole” was filmed on Brownstone Street which has been used for several productions like Gone Girl, the “Smooth Criminal” music video, the 1982 Annie movie when she first meets her dog Sandy, and Bruce Almighty when Jim Carrey’s character takes the dog outside the house after it pees all over the inside.

I'm not from the USA, but i feel very nostalgic for this commercials. I hadn't the opportunity to watch them on TV, but i remember watching this on RUclips. It would be great to have another commercial like this, Maybe an Ad based on Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Not going to lie my friend sent me this video on twitter and literally the second I realized what it was I immediately stopped what I was doing and started watching! Not only had I not seen a lot of these so just watching them for the first time alone was fun, but this was also so interesting! I miss when Nintendo did creative and surreal commercials, instead of just showing regular people playing their hardware.
When I watched the vid “scary mario commercial” I almost didn’t want to play mario sunshine again but then my mom came with me crying in the Conner and she knew that whenever i watched the smash commercial I will forget about my scares and troubles and laugh and she showed me it I was better

Literally gave me nightmares for 2 months when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade.
The guy who created it had many different videos with jump scares aimed at children. He kept making RUclips channels and kept getting removed for violating the terms of service. I want to say his name was fmunk, but that's only from memory.
My parents took action to get the Rainbow Puffle video and channel taken down, so sorry, that's probably why you can't find it.
Thanks for bringing it up in the video though! It's sort of nice to know that I was not alone. I did not know the video was that popular. I haven't seen anyone else bring it up at all.
Posted this before I saw the comment about the cracked dolls. Did it start with one and then multiply, possibly reaching out their hands? I ran away from the screen as soon as the scream played, so I did not see most of it. I am pretty sure mine was a clown though, and it was definitely on Rainbow Puffles like the one you viewed. Could have likely been different video by the same user. That could be why titOH209 remembered a different but similar video as well.
@@Postaku I love getting comments like this, and yours has been the most comprehensive in regards to this Rainbow Puffle video. I only remember it being dolls, but clowns/zombies also make sense. I was pretty young at the time and like you ran away from it as soon as I could so I only saw it for a little bit. But I remember the set up was at the Town Center area with the coffee shop and whatnot, and it said to look closely inbetween one of the buildings for it to appear (similar to the White Puffle appearing at the Dojo way back when). I'm not sure if the video was super popular or if it was the case of me obsessively checking videos on the Rainbow Puffle haha. But it makes sense that we saw the same video considering that explains why it's gone now. That's so funny your parents took action on it, good on them!

when i was a kid, i was into world of warcraft. i remember seeing a video named something like "secret teldrassil easter egg" and it showed a guy walking onto a branch in-game. it then said to look closely at the end of it, and there would be a message on it. there was a screamer that genuinely freaked me out for a solid week. i still searched for the branch though.

The attention to detail on finger is truly gorgeous. It is so ahead of its time and I feel is the most complex and beautiful mascot suit of all time. If every mascot company took a look at finger maybe they could learn a thing or two about fantastic design because mascot design peaked with the amazing, life changing finger.
I honestly love these commercials. You could tell not only did they love the properties they made the commercials for but they also wanted to express themselves and made the commercials as memorable as humanly possible. I highly doubt you wouldnt wanna buy any of these games if you saw the commercials for them back in the day.

I used to see a few of these ads when I was younger, and I've always had a soft spot in my heart for these uncanny ads. Glad to see a video looking back on not only the ads themselves, but the production shots as well. You did a great job here!

I remember alot of them, One that got me was this video where a guy said his dog can talk, so he held the dog infront of the camera and told it to say something, Before a screaming blue ghost girl popped up.
And one more I remember was this video where it was called "Find The Monkeys" Or something like that, It was just an image of a Forrest, But at the end a picture of a Monkey dressed as a jester pops up with spooky lighting and a loud scream lol.

I have an arguably worse story with the Sunshine ad. Way back in... 2011, I wanna say? In a long-forgotten, sorta-prototype version of the cringe community? It was called the Commentary Community, the "The world's a special place" clip was frequently used to mock people. Every time I see it, I get reminded of those days, and volt instantly.
I also may or may not have destroyed a big part of that community by an argument with my friend, and even though we hated each other got like a year, we got back together and have been close buddies since, making the community crumble to dust for nothing... Oops?

As soon as you mentioned the “scary mario commercial,” i was relieved. I’m thankful that i wasn’t the only one who was scared by it as a child. But while we’re on the subject of jumpscare’s on youtube, let me introduce a couple of one’s I remember from my childhood.
I don’t remember exactly what this one was about, but i remember it was about homer simpson from the simpsons. It started with text that said “homer has a secret message. Look very close at his portrait.” And it ended with a photo of an ugly baby. I had the volume turned down all the way, cause this was when i was smart enough to know when a jumpscare was coming.
Another one i remember was “Goombella is so cute.” It’s just a 7 second photo of goombella from paper mario, that ended with a jumpscare of goombella with a poorly photoshopped (scary) smile. After watching that video i never looked at her upon playing TTYD the same way ever again.

As for the Kirby one, a lot of people used their finger instead of the stylus with the DS. The one that came with the system was small and got uncomfortable after a while. I'm sure plenty of people played the game with just their finger.

This was an awesome video, thanks for making it! I'm surprised to see the behind the scenes photos of the costumes in production though. Pre-covid I did promo work for a company contracted out by Nintendo and one year I had to wear a Mario mascot costume in a Christmas parade and they were soooo strict about the entire costume. After the parade I got locked out of the dressing room which was in a private corridor and wasn't allowed to take any of the costume off until someone came to unlock the dressing room, not even the giant head. They let me take the Mario gloves off but I had to keep my actual hands in my pockets so no one could see them if they wandered in. I'm in Australia so it was like 40 degrees celsius lol, so hot. Besides that it was awesome, one of the funnest things I've got to do.
