- If you were around for the release of Super Smash Bros For The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, you probably remember just how insane the hype for amiibo was. These NFC-based Nintendo figures captured the attentions of both collectors and non-collectors alike, becoming a huge, albeit short-lived, phenomenon. One aspect of amiibo history I never see brought up are the many amiibo prototypes and samples that have leaked over the years.
With every figure line, there will always be early passes of the products. Stuff like one of a kind early tests of the molds, unpainted sculpts, and designs that look completely different from the final products, and of course, amiibo are no different! So, let's talk about them!

@16:33 I have a Ness story from May 29th (or "Amiibogeddon", as we were calling it then!) The day prior, I attended a Smash tourney and just happened to run into a friend of a friend who worked at a particular Gamestop location. He lived and worked fairly far away from me, but Smash locals would attract people from well around a 50-mile or so radius. He let me know his Gamestop had exactly one Ness in stock that would be up the following day. As a diehard EarthBound fan (not an amiibo completist, though - I just really wanted a Ness), I took his word on it and drove (some ~40 miles!) to his Gamestop location and waited there circa 5 am to make *absolutely sure* I'd be first in line. I think online hype had led me to believe there might be a massive line of people waiting outside, but ultimately I was the only one standing there for five hours... leading to me getting interrogated by the police. Apparently somebody going through the drive-thru at the Starbucks down the street thought I looked suspicious waiting there and called the heat on me. The officer didn't have any problem after I explained what I was doing, and went on his merry way, but he did not-so-surreptitiously remain in the parking lot for another half hour to keep his eye on me.
Ultimately, I managed to snag the only Ness on release day, so it was all worth it. I have him displayed on top of my complete-in-box EarthBound to this day, and I got a nice story out of it. Considering Ness himself ran afoul of police, I like to think of this as something that makes him and I one of soul, though I didn't have to deal with any "Super Ultra Mambo-Tango-Foxtrot martial arts".

There's actually a range of bootleg amiibo with NFC functionality. However, they come in card form and have some strange, but nicely drawn artwork that only superficially resembles the characters they're based on (mostly likely to avoid copyright infringement)
For example: Mario looks like Fix-it Felix jr., Wario has a mullet, Waluigi looks like a sassy & flamboyant french stereotype, Wedding Mario is straight up a short Bishōnen, Wedding Bowser looks like a pimp, Yoshi is cross between a little green alien & Sonic, all the Links wear the tunic of the wild (Toon Botw Link is super cute), all the inklings are just kids now, King Dedede is a fancy looking royal canary, Bandana Waddle Dee is a magical girl themed Waddle Dee & Warp Star Kirby is just horrific to look at.

Just search up "bootleg amiibo cards" on stuff like Google images & eBay, Larryinc64 posted some on twitter. Wario definitely looks like Ron Jeremy.
Olimar and Pkimin as the bootleg look creepy to me.

I bought a German Villager for $80 in early 2015. I don't know if it was worth it or not. On one hand I have the original Villager (he was redesigned a year or two ago), and on the other I spent $80 on a Villager Amiibo.

Prototypes and factory samples are some of my absolute favorite things to hear about! I was never really into amiibo collecting, but boy do I remember all my friends going crazy for them back in the day. Matter of fact the only amiibo I do have were all gifts from them: Waluigi and Daisy from the Super Mario set, Blathers and Celeste from the Animal Crossing set, and the standalone Chibi-Robo. They all sit proudly on my desk as a fond memory of those crazy days!
Wow, what a video, It's brought the best nostalgic factoids, with this series. And this TOTALLY holds the grudge to the Angry Birds telepods days. I'm I've been to collect more of these and look for the best ones to play the game on my own Wii U. Thanks so much, man!!!

I'm not your average amiibo collector. My only goal for collecting is getting every variation of Mario. I have Mario Party (Normal and Gold) and the 8-bit Mario Maker ones. All i'm missing is Silver Mario, Smash Mario, and Wedding Mario.

Oh wow, the Splatoon launch day. I remember going to Target to get a Pac-Man amiibo, and picking up Splatoon as well. I wasn't planning on getting it since I didn't like the Testfire, but I still did, for some reason. I'm glad I did though, since I ended up loving the game once I got used to it.

Has it really been such 4 years since the Amiibo boom started? Man... I feel old. Though it's pretty nice seeing some unpainted prototypes, including the T-posed Donkey Kong Skylander... so surreal.
I'll probably buy the new Smash amiibo figures... sometimes after the holidays... mayb I can finally get a Megaman Amiibo after not having one for so long... I'm still a bit salty about not getting the Golden variant that came with Legacy Collection for 3DS. My latest Amiibo I have is the giant Detective Pikachu Amiibo I bought from the Pokémon Center in Japan... and that trip with my brother and his wife was months ago!
Here's to more Amiibo in 2019... and better uses of the dang things other than just bonus in games...
I have a few things to say about this vid
1) Nice. I never knew about the prototypes floating around. I was too busy getting scalped trying to get the amiibo of my favorite character 😭
2) Damn your sister is so nice, you had the game plan laid out for her and she came through with almost all the amiibo 😂
3) I didn't have a sister to help me get amiibo but I did have r/amiibo that helped me get a Jigglypuff and a Rosalina. Good stuff
4) Oh man I can't wait for the Simon and Snake amiibo, THE CRAZE SHALL BEGIN ANEW

Thank you so much! I really want to make videos on the Ocarina of Time plushes and the old Animal Crossing sets with the human villagers cause those are my favorite. As for sources, it’s just me from seeing images and listings from over the years lol. I’ve been collecting stuff for like 6 years so I’ve come to know a lot of sets really well. When I got to the part where you brought up the gold and silver Mario, I was immediately reminded of this one time I went to Gamestop to pick up some event Pokémon cards for Sun and Moon. They had a gold Mario amiibo on the shelf, and this was the ONE time I went to a Gamestop WITHOUT my wallet or any money on hand at all. I was pissed at that, and as such have always made sure to carry some money on me whenever going there or other stores that I know to sell amiibo.

I was in the amiibo community at the time and the story about Gold + Silver Mario is a bit different. Sometime around the announcement of the Super Mario series of amiibo, CSPIA product sheets of BOTH amiibo were posted online by Nintendo, only being delisted and never deleted from the server, which made it a bit odd when Silver Mario didn't show up alongside his golden friend. It was believed he was simply canceled until these packaging tests showed up and being officially announced to launch alongside Smash Wave 4 (aka Gamestop dying hard). Being in the center of the collecting scene at the time was pure insanity.
But either way great video as usual!

The day that gold Mario released was my birthday, I wasn't even aware it existed until June, but then, a year later somewhere around the release of star wars rogue one, my local mall gamestop had two gold Mario amiibos on a shelf and I convinced my mom to get it for me. Best Christmas gift ever. I even named it first gold because it was my first amiibo.
God I forgot how rare the Ness amiibo was. I got it from a Toys R Us that was going out of business early in 2018 for like $6.

I like the Gold and Silver Mario purely because it gives them something to make exclusive.
During the beginning, many main Amiibos were made exclusive and were difficult to get.
I was always thinking during then that they should make alts of them and make those exclusives instead.

I was at Walmart with my gramma I was like 15, I saw them on the shelves and I showed them to her and I said if nothing for Christmas but these I would be happy and my gramma says “shhh don’t tell your mom” and let me get 3 even tho it was almost Christmas, and then got the rest of the original release for me for Christmas. Gold Mario was a nightmare. Our store was supposed to receive 20 but we only found 7. One of the night managers has stolen the other boxes and got caught at the loading dock handing them off to someone who drove off. (He was fired, fined and blacklisted) This all happened about an hour or so before we opened. I remember hearing the stampede of people running towards my department. Knowing I only had 7 of those shiney little bastards by my feet. (Not that 20 would have been any better) There was easily over 40 people surrounding the counter. We had to call security for crowd control. The website kept lagging, and the phone rang nonstop. Many people threatened to sue and the store owner grew genuinely concerned.
That was the day I decided I hated Amiibos.
I remember wave 4. I also remember telling people what I got and getting a tidal wave of hate for it too. Good times.
I remember these days I decided to wait and it was worth it I found shulk and lucario and even gold Mario all in stores.
I was walking around a toysrus a couple of years ago and I saw a silver Mario amiibo and I physically stopped in my tracks and bought it in a heartbeat

Man I miss the amiibo craze, it was huge and I collected them all and it was crazy. I remember walking into a Toys R Us (rip) on day 1 and seeing the holy trinity and passing them up. I got them later of course, though.

I got a Gold Mario for Christmas because they apparently restocked them at some point in 2016 and I got a Silver Mario at Best Buy and it was the last one there. Best Amiibo score for me, actually Christmas 2015 got me half the smash amiibo roster
