It's called Kata, a series of punches and blocks. It's working on techniques and basics first, creating a good foundation. If you MMA idiots knew anything you wouldn't be so disrespectful. You could all learn something from Lyoto!
+Chantelle M There's nothing in this kata that Machida has transferred to his MMA except strong legs. You can bet he's not doing Sochin when he's training for a big fight... And given that this is a 3rd or 4th dan kata, it can hardly be said to represent "basics".
+Mat Broomfield I was explaining what kata is. But I agree he is moving away from his karate roots, he used to have an upright stance and now he leans in which is exactly what you shouldn't do. He should go back to his Shotokan style and maybe start winning again. I hope.

Well, in all fairness, GSP studied kyokushin, and their kata are not pretty to begin with, not as sexy as Goju or other branches. Then again, kyokushin's kata are designed to faciliate kumite, which is their main focus. And Mas Oyama was big strong guy, so his kata wouldn't look as pretty anyway.
Apparently he had a little problem with stretching his back leg in zenkutsu-dachi. Despite that, it was a great execution of Sochin, with great kime and zanchin.

I disagree - his KATA is probably average at best (I'd say his brothers is much better) but his kumite is amazing (which is the more important thing for MMA). Do these karate guys you speak of know how to fight on the ground? And I really don't think karate is effective in MMA unless it's used the same way as Lyoto uses it.

In all his MMA demo vids I see him do Sochin. I guess we know what his favorite kata is.
His favorite kata is Tekki shodan by the way.
I recently asked him via Instagram what was his favourite Kata, and why. He answered in his stories: "Sochin, because it is a strong Kata".
