A really awesome thing that Trent did with this song is he released it free license as him just singing and created a competition to create the beats for it. He then supported the ones he thought were the best by promoting them on the albums website. Some really awesome versions got released. What you're hearing is from an album that wasn't received very well. I also recommend you go back to his older stuff - Terrible Lie, March of the Pigs, Closer, Hurt. And yes NiN is AWESOME live.
I’ll add two instrumentals that I love a lot: La Mer and Just Like You Imagined.
Trent does a lot of really amazing instrumentals, the kinds that just build and build. Melodies on top of melodies and bit crushers to give it that classic Trent noise.
I listened to The Downward Spiral and The Fragile at least 5 times a week for about 3 years during my sad loser-like early 20s. Late 90s music was a mixed bag, but Nine Inch Nails delivered nothing but gold. Those two albums in particular are absolute masterpieces IMO. Aside from starf*ckers, that song is no good and doesn’t belong at all.
The 90s was a great era to be a sad depressed loser on a path of self destruction. Grunge and then Korn and deftones etc… music hit peak melancholy back then.

Oh man- NINs who catalog is full of songs like this. The next one, with a video, should be "Perfect Drug". It gives you a whole feel for what the "Goth" aesthetic is about. For samples, hit "Me, I'm not"- has the best 808 since "Paul Revere" in it. Keep on keeping on, cousin.
Try "The Collector" off this album or The Hand that Feeds or Right Where it Belongs.
