Thanks for the sponsor. I was planning on finding a university of filming when i graduate but i didn't really know many of them. And considering you were there, i should become as good as you are. Thanks for the sponsor again. Very thankful.
With nose and scar wax you should also cover it in Liquid Latex. it will keep it on and in once piece a lot longer and is actually on the instructions on the bottom of the tub.
You can go full practical by putting a small button under the wax, tied to a piece of monofilament, when it's time for the hole to open, yank the monofilament, which in turn will rip a small round hole (size of the button) out of the wax.
I remember seeing something on a DVD's special features once where they did the trick almost exactly as you have, except they hid a plain old shirt button under the scar wax attached to a piece of fishing line. To shoot the actor, a stage hand pulled the button abruptly from off camera. As a bonus, there was blood under the wax, that came flying and spilling out.
Of course, you could do it the old fashion way by painting a silver dollar sized circle of dark red, tying fishing line to a button and placing it in the circle, covering it all with nose wax but pull the fishing line through the wax, and ripping out the button with the fishing line offscreen.
i was about to search for a tutorial on this exact thing then saw you'd just uploaded this, it's like the fifth time this has happened, i'm 100% convinced you guys can read my mind! useful for me though so thanks ;D
Hey ryan! have you ever covered set design? like for say short films and stuff? actually building a set like they do in the movies?? that would be really interesting!!
that's pretty sweet-looking. I would never notice that the bullet hole coverup was just the skin over it, but when you said it, i was like "OHHH thats how they did it!" Great job Ryan and the Guys!
I'm liking these shorter episodes quite a bit! They somewhat force you to trim the fat and get right to the training, which needs to be as fast and efficient as possible.
Just get a cheap foundation honey, it'll be cheaper than a decent body paint, be just as effective and a lot easier to work with for someone inexperienced (this is probs too late though haha)
Sheesh, how is this almost ten years old? I’m on the tail end of my film school experience. Because of this, the Film Riot my rabbit hole is wild I’m on this evening is surreal.
Also, I would use a little black makeup in the hole before the blood. That will give it depth and make it look like we can see through the hole in to Josh's head.
Wonderful video you are very good at what you do and excellent at your craft sir I was just wondering what program are you using to do that do all the editing and cutting with ? You're top notch with that as well
Hi Ryan! I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to do a "The Flash" effect. If you haven't seen the show, when he runs, there is a lightning trail behind him. Is there a way to pull this off in After Effects?
I thought you would photograph his forehead before the application, and use it in post, so he'd be in the same lighting as you would have him in the actual shot with makeup applied.
I got your Film Maker's Complete Bundle With the Black Friday deals, which were great btw. I was wondering if you could do a video on how to use your music pack well. Like show how to mix the full track and stingers, and maybe even build your own arrangement with the stems. Thanks
Your videos are awesome, so informative but I get lost when you go thru the steps of acquiring each effect. I need to mess around with this editing program myself -- perhaps watch this video several times till I get it right. Thanks for all you do. Makes me want to get out and film already.
I know this came out 5 years ago but I cant figure out the masking tool. I cant get it to work as seen in this video. I've watched other tutorials but to no avail... any suggestions?
Hello there! Awesome videos! Greetings from a land far away called Greece! One request please. Can you show us the ways you could achieve a mirror shot without any crew in the reflection? Thank you! Keep making amazing videos.
awesome, but i'd like to point out that the blood dripping down on his forehead is lagging behind the actual bullet hole (While he falls). Other than that, amazing.
In the movie RoboCop made in 2014 they used a video transition in the scene where he was dreaming dancing with his wife then wakes up in the lab with the Doctor standing in front of him, oh my god that transition they used from the dancing scene to the lab was so fucking bad ass, i must learn how to do that!
COOL! I was just thinking (my head hurts now) that ifn ya did the headshot/jerk and drop motion fast and quick enuff - ya might be able to get away with having your victim stand dead still, while someone plants a red dot on his or her forehead. OR something along those lines - no tracking elements needed, just proper editing. BUT I dont do this stuff - its just what crossed my mind. Your method is obviously WAY COOLER though!
Hey Ryan! I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to shoot someone with an arrow from some different angles not just a 90 degrees shot. I have videocopilot's element 3d so maybe you could pull it off using that. By the way, I love film riot! Thanks
Awesome stuff, though I'm wondering why there wasn't more impact particle effects, like blood spatter or torn off skin pieces? Is it because the bullet would actually go straight through with no fuzz in real life, or because it would be too much of a hazzle to add all of those things?
***** Are you referring to my comment or the video? Either way, it doesn't really help to just make a statement like that, you need to point at more specific things.
***** Yeah, but you wouldn't be able to see the brain spatter anyways, as there was no wall behind Josh. As for blood, I agree with you regarding the impact, but not afterwards. There is actually a brain inside his head, not a pool of blood.
i have a recipe that we used in our movie "Deathplay" (made by my husband Tonie Rombin) For those who can not or cant get scarwax or dermawax for this take two spoons of hairwax and put it in the microwave for 20 sek. then take coffe and red paint (paint for food, dont know the name of it in english) and blend it in make the color werry dark so mix and match. then take a black eyeliner pen and make a big black circle in the forhead of your actor. Smear the wax over the hole and take a cuetip and make a hol in the center så the black shows through. then take a spoon and dip it in oil and smear out the corners to blend with the actors skin. Make a composition of instant coffe and red food color for blood and drip it into the hole. let the actor shake hes head (headbang) to make the blood come out of the hole and land randomly in the face. THE go to youtube and type Filmriot in the search bar and watch all the episodes....done ;-)
What do you call bullets flying through the air, like the glowy blasts zooming past? Just like you see in war ground scenes or something similar.. I've spent hours researching trying to find out so I can look up a way to make them, but I can't find anything. :( If there are tutorials anywhere, that would be fantastic.
so was that a real gun or a fake gun? I'm trying to figure out how to actually fire the gun and make the spark come out so it looks like a real gunshot. how did you pull that off?..
Thanks for the sponsor. I was planning on finding a university of filming when i graduate but i didn't really know many of them. And considering you were there, i should become as good as you are. Thanks for the sponsor again. Very thankful.
It's hilarious how Josh is always the one that get shot or hit in the head with a baseball bat or drop kicked lol
Ben Nye the fake blood guy?
dumb idiot too bad this didnt get many likes
dumb idiot
i lold
I dont get it.
Ben Nye the Makeup guy!
You guys are always so helpful. If it wasn't for your videos I wouldn't have an idea how to go about my film project I'm doing. Thanks a lot guys.
I like how you combine practical and digital effects in this show
With nose and scar wax you should also cover it in Liquid Latex. it will keep it on and in once piece a lot longer and is actually on the instructions on the bottom of the tub.

We just used this technique in our latest short film, a Sci-Fi Comedy called Takeover. Worked like a charm! Thanks for the vid!
I love your effects!
Nice to see a fellow Full Sail Grad ......doing something as solid as this show.
you got some awesome stuff..off to learning to basics first!
Haha dude, I watch your videos! That was funny seeing you in these comments lol!
6Foot4Honda oh heeeeeey
the description is the best one ive seen in a long time
I love your videos! I've been thinking about getting into filmmaking and I'm getting after effects very soon. Keep up the great work!

Awesome tutorial!
Can you do one that Getting ng Stabbed
No people were harmed during this Film
Damn, now I have to find a free version of after effects to do this. THEN I have to watch tutorials to learn how to use it. *Shit*
Black Magic Fusion is a free effects software: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion
Paul Ocone Thanks man, is it good, like as good as after effects? Easy to learn?
Soz I’m late hitfilm express is fabulous and is almost the same as after affrects
@@unnoticed6802lmao 6 years late
I wonder if he ever completed his quest...
i was about to search for a tutorial on this exact thing then saw you'd just uploaded this, it's like the fifth time this has happened, i'm 100% convinced you guys can read my mind! useful for me though so thanks ;D
Hey ryan! have you ever covered set design? like for say short films and stuff? actually building a set like they do in the movies?? that would be really interesting!!
Great video guys. Love the no fluff or BS tutorials. Thanks!
“You can go fully practical”
*hmmmm*
That program is better than anything I could imagine.
Wtf is this, it is too good.
That is for Hollywood lol.
that's pretty sweet-looking.
"If you give this effect a SHOT" HAHAHAHA
No fair!! I've got to go out and spend extra cash on brown paint cause that wax thing won't match my skin! Ahhhh!
Just get a cheap foundation honey, it'll be cheaper than a decent body paint, be just as effective and a lot easier to work with for someone inexperienced (this is probs too late though haha)
This looks way easier than I expected. Good tip!
First question:) can you show us how you ligjt your green screen ?
Ryan?
Would love to see that.
They did at least 5 videos on that, look it up.
LB films *light?
Aiden8r Please don't be like that, it's not even only for my own advantage.
Yes
I feel like it's been a while since you did a tutorial like this. Thanks for tips Ryan!
Sheesh, how is this almost ten years old? I’m on the tail end of my film school experience. Because of this, the Film Riot my rabbit hole is wild I’m on this evening is surreal.

Vaseline works very well for nose and scar wax as well.
When will there be a new sketch?! ;D
It has been a while
Uhh six years ago
Yes! I've been waiting for this one so long!
Wonderful video you are very good at what you do and excellent at your craft sir I was just wondering what program are you using to do that do all the editing and cutting with ? You're top notch with that as well

If you haven't seen the show, when he runs, there is a lightning trail behind him.
Is there a way to pull this off in After Effects?
wow these film makers really put a lot of work into doing movies
Can I complement you on how well lit your scene was? Nothing like "spectacular" but super solid bro!
I thought you would photograph his forehead before the application, and use it in post, so he'd be in the same lighting as you would have him in the actual shot with makeup applied.
I always like when the bullet hole is not completely centered on the guys head, it makes it feel more realistic
Good work guys and well done on the million subs I've followed you since I started with after effect 6 ,keep it up
Yay it's back up!
Hey mate, great tutorial, I want too ask - What program are you editing in, After Effects?
Super 8 reveal when Josh falls down is really dope... Hahaha! Awesome!
Thanks you so much Ryan! Your The Reason I Started Making Movies! Keep Up The Great Work! :)
Your the best film riot
omg I need to go to this school looks amazingly fun
What program do u use? Cause these effects are great!!!
I got your Film Maker's Complete Bundle With the Black Friday deals, which were great btw. I was wondering if you could do a video on how to use your music pack well. Like show how to mix the full track and stingers, and maybe even build your own arrangement with the stems. Thanks

Hey, I love watching your show. Could you possibly make a video about lighting?
Thanks, Alex
I cant wait till you guys get back to more smaller tutorials
Great tutorial! I will be using this in my new video that is coming out soon.
I know this came out 5 years ago but I cant figure out the masking tool. I cant get it to work as seen in this video. I've watched other tutorials but to no avail... any suggestions?
Awesome! reminded me of the good ol Bloobtober stuff
That is so cool! I may actually do that on my next short.
Love your videos!:) They are a great help for every situation!
Greetings from Germany!:))
Everyone and their mom wants to be able to pull this off! Great video!
ben nye the bloody guy
First things first, that was very informative episode.
Wilson deserves to be on Ryan's head next time.
How about exit wounds? They're larger and messier so I was wondering how you'd do that.
Tbh, I feel like the old clip you showed looked more violent...
R.I.P "That Guy," never forgotten... except your name.
Fast but easy compositing technique.
Could you do an episode on camera cranes Ryan? There aren't many videos covering it on youtube...
Another entertaining episode! You guys are awesome! =)

New subscriber here, I want to see all the shorts & movies you talk about on this show. Where do I go to see your work?
On this channel and their Triune Films channel!
Paul Ocone thanks, I appreciate it!

5:32 "Give this effect a shot" hue hue hue
Very clever. So better to remove fx then to add it.Cool.thanks mate
Hey Ryan! I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to shoot someone with an arrow from some different angles not just a 90 degrees shot. I have videocopilot's element 3d so maybe you could pull it off using that. By the way, I love film riot! Thanks

Almost three years ago, this was the first filmriot video i watched
RONIN IN THE BACKGROUND 😍
What program do you use for editing? Love your video
Hi Ryan,
Any possibility that you can do a comparison between avid vs fcp x vs premier pro from a professional point of view.
Thanks....
Ady
this is incredible. which software do you use?
you don't necessarily need mineral oil, just wet your fingers with water.
Hey, I'm wearing my Batman shirt too Ryan! Dope.
Can you guys make a "how to" video about Schufftan process using mirrors?
i have a recipe that we used in our movie "Deathplay" (made by my husband Tonie Rombin)
For those who can not or cant get scarwax or dermawax for this
take two spoons of hairwax and put it in the microwave for 20 sek.
then take coffe and red paint (paint for food, dont know the name of it in english) and blend it in make the color werry dark so mix and match.
then take a black eyeliner pen and make a big black circle in the forhead of your actor. Smear the wax over the hole and take a cuetip and make a hol in the center så the black shows through. then take a spoon and dip it in oil and smear out the corners to blend with the actors skin. Fantastic stuff as always
best tutorial video
Hey why was it private for a while? Is this a re-upload? Whatever, great video as always!
very well done...
so was that a real gun or a fake gun? I'm trying to figure out how to actually fire the gun and make the spark come out so it looks like a real gunshot. how did you pull that off?..
That was a prop hand gun, the sparks coming out was done in editing, they are called muzzle flares.
Can you show how to do a slow motion head shot effect like in wanted? VFX lovin
thanks for that nice toturial
Can't help but be curious. How many takes do you have to do Ryan?
I am 9000% confused by after effects. Could you do a video on the basics.
there is plenty of comprehensive tutorielihs lhyoop afhter on damen llhuthubes ...
please visit videocopilot.net to get the basics. there are a lot of tutorial on that site
Most morbid intro yet. Ha ha! It's for all the times Josh interrupts during Ryan's bits. =D
Holy shit thank you! I'm writing a script that calls for this so this is so awesome
I just used a real gun and my friend for some reason she’s not moving
cool ! can you film a tutorial but shoot me
what video editing software do you use ??
