I am at Full Sail right now and I swear to God that you are following me along my curriculum. Nearly every single episode for like the past three months has been almost directly related to the subjects I'm learning about! I feel like I've got a secret tutor :D
Oh god, Ryan Booth's Cinematography and Ryan Connolly's directing together in one short film, I don't know if the community can handle the awesomeness. Excited for the release!
Just what I needed to see! I'm going into production in two weeks on my first budgeted short film so it's great to always touch basis on these things, even if some of them are the fundamentals! :)
That's awesome! I hope that everything goes smooth, and that you enjoy the process from beginning to end, don't let it stress you too much. Let a small level of stress drive you to be efficient and task oriented, but make sure it doesn't drain you and as a result the atmosphere of the entire project. Remember: This is what you love (Hopefully), love doing it!!! Blessings on you mate!
You guys are my favorite channel on youtube, literally seam like good hearted people who are just trying your best to make it and help others along the way. A true inspiration to me as a young film maker and my crew. So thank you all for helping me and all of us along the way.
I am glad to see you are feeling better Ryan! And thank you for this! I loved your suggestion for how to break down the shotlist and categorizing things. I am working on my first short and it is a massive undertaking and such suggestions, although seemingly obvious, is a huge help to me. So, thanks again!
I'm surprised you mentioned your leatherman! I'm in a very small film group and I ALWAYS have my skeletool on my hip at every shoot. IT is probably the most handy, lifesaving tool out there!
Film Riot Break a leg boys (and girl(s)) on your shoot. Solid advice in that there video. I don't know how you have the ability to focus your attention with the seemingly thousands of things going on in your biz and personal life but man you get it done. Hat's off to you! The 600w dimmers are a great idea for practical lights on location - prolly not as important in the days before our cameras could see in the dark, but now, man, a great way to paint that light! :) Sounds like your cold is bye bye too. :)
Extremely. However, Other films that we have done didn't use almost any of that gear, we are progressing and showing you the growth. When we shoot Film Riot sketches we usually have one cam, a shotgun mic on a mic stand and maybe two lights, if any. You start with what you have and work up from there.
Film Riot I film most of my stuff with a 7D, three point lighting system, and a shotgun mic. I really don't need a lot more to film, anything beyond that is really just lavishing and in Indiana it's not like I have a huge excited crew/team to work with on a regular basis. I'll always be looking at DIY ways to do things like sliders and such because it's how I was shaped as a filmmaker. :P
***** I'm based in Muncie, I film in Indy, New Castle, Muncie and I'm aiming for some Gary/Chicago stuff, hopefully this year. :P You're more than welcome to join in if you'd like! ^_^
+Nathanseals Hey Guys! I'm based in Indy too! My youtube channel doesn't do my Filmmaking justice cause its just vlogs and stuff but if you need help or are interested in working together hit me up! always glad to help! Finally finished film school so I'm doing a lot
Thanks! Just showing off your equipment was very helpful. I've thought about doing a short film myself and you've already shown me the kind of stuff I'll need. Thanks! PS: That is a seriously frickin' large Super 8 poster.
Just got a pair of 4' 4Bank Kino lights. He's not lying, they are nuts. I've never had a light that useful. They come in a great case, but it weighs about 90 lbs, not including the stands.
It's always so so good to have your tips! There's always simple things that I would not think of and feel like a dumb ass when on the location! Thanks Ryan!
Have you ever had the problem of your tungsten lights smoking? Haha! My Lowel pro light had a thin stream of smoke coming out of it for about 8 minutes the other day, I am guessing it is just paint or debris being burned, but I am a little concerned. Thanks!
Whats the short about?? or did I just miss that part? This was a good episode but easily could've been 12-15min, didn't even go over budgeting, scheduling etc. An in-depth look into all these aspects specifically talking about the new short film would be really awesome!! The BTS stuff on Proximity was excellent.
Hi, Ryan! I have great admiration and respect for your work. I'm following you for two years. A question: What do you consider the need to search for the actors time, before or after having everything ready including locations? Thanks a lot for your attention!
Hey fellas, off topic but unsure where to post... I want to desaturate colors in post, but maintain the integrity of the the blacks. Is it just select, invert, then apply desired effect?
Hey Ryan!! I'm new to the filming/video editing scene and hope to work on multiple short films throughout this year. I love your stuff and have watched since you did Film State (Which I miss:(), but I'm pumped to watch your videos here and get the advice I need to make my short films!!
If you want to write a script, get Trelby. It's open source, very simple and fun to use. It features an incredibly large database of names if don't know how to name your characters. Another alternative is the old version of Celtx, which has storyboard capabilities but it's a little more complicated. Just don't use the online version, they'll steal your ideas...guaranteed!!!
Can you show us setting up a scene for your short film and maybe.. just maybe show us the script so that we can get an ideal on how it suppose to be written. (Highlights included) thanks!!
Question: Why are all saying 2,35:1 and 2,39:1 are the most used aspect ratios for films, and the most films I watched are 2,4:1 exactly (Resolution for HD: 1920x800) ?
How would you compare Fade In to Adobe Story? (I'm assuming your comment about the look and feel was in regards to that. Story is a beast for what it does, but damn is it a complicated one). I've used Celtx for a while, but it seems lacking in some ways, especially now that they've trimmed their features to the free version.
C-47s are useful for putting up gels/diffusion, or holding up anything that doesn't need one of those big clamps. Gaff tape as well, and it has a multitude of other uses. The Leatherman also has a multitude of uses. Needless, to say, if you have a set that has lights, rigging, or even just a tripod, these will come in handy.
when will we feel we gotta work hard as possible we got to work on it I don't know what to get to the next level so you do what you gotta do and leave the problems behind and film your behind off
Can you make an episode for m how they did intros for shows like Goliath on amazon prime. I really like the way the intro and how it uses real people and cgi.
Good luck with your new short, and thanks for sharing all this goodness.
Dave Dugdale!
Thanks, Dave.
Dave's here, now we can get started...seriously, I love your videos Dave!
Daaaaaave!
+Dave Dugdale DAVE MY MAN
So So Good... It's So So Good!
That voice XD

Thank you Ryan!!! The biggest film I've done yet will be shot tomorrow, so this was super helpful!
Just what I needed to see! I'm going into production in two weeks on my first budgeted short film so it's great to always touch basis on these things, even if some of them are the fundamentals! :)
Good luck!!

Whistlingduckpro Troy Huizar Thanks guys! It should be uploaded on my channel in a month!

How much are those clamps you mounted the baby on?
So, I watched "Whiplash" after your recommendation yesterday. Don't think I didn't notice that second drummers name.... RYAN CONNOLLY.
Yes!! I was in the theater thinking "ohhmaahhgaad"
Gaaahhh. I seriously need to watch it.
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, Josh is the drummer in the family.
Whaaa?!?!?!?
I am glad to see you are feeling better Ryan! And thank you for this! I loved your suggestion for how to break down the shotlist and categorizing things. Only Film Riot can make something cool out of a candy cane and a cabin hahaha. Looking forward to watch this project! I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
HEY BUDDY
How about Hansel and Gretel
Let's Play: HyperYod
Smart! Didn't think about that.
Wow it's soooo awesome to see Dave Dugdale and all the coolest Indie Film Makers checking in!!!! #FilmRiot
This was so well needed! I'm directing my first film in the next coming weeks and this helped me so much! Stay classy, Film Riot.

I have no reason to comment here, but I'm doing it anyway.
Hi NerdSync
FoddyFogHorn ! Hello!
***** Awesome! Thanks, Craig!
Some people just wanna watch the world burn...
Just like me, lol
Very helpful video. Too much for me but I now know where to go fur every resource I'd need for a small short film.
I'm so glad someone shares my love for the Leatherman
New short film? Amazing! Can't wait!
Ryan's back and better than ever!!!
4:42 We need an episode where Josh is the host.
Filmmaking is really expensive lol.
FACT.
Extremely. However, Other films that we have done didn't use almost any of that gear, we are progressing and showing you the growth. Finally finished film school so I'm doing a lot
NICE!
I'm starting a short film as well (around 17-20 minutes). And was wondering a good way to prep. This helps a lot!
making of episode after that would be great, to show how all preparation work in action.
When i was looking for screenwriting software to migrate to from Celtx, Fade In was the only software that i knew i ACTUALLY wanted.
I'm happy that you feel better. Good luck with your shoot.
Thanks! Just showing off your equipment was very helpful. I've thought about doing a short film myself and you've already shown me the kind of stuff I'll need. Thanks!
PS: That is a seriously frickin' large Super 8 poster.
That was the greatest ad you guys have done in terms of comedy. i died.
Just got a pair of 4' 4Bank Kino lights. He's not lying, they are nuts. I've never had a light that useful. They come in a great case, but it weighs about 90 lbs, not including the stands.

Thanks Ryan! I'm making an 80s Macbeth film and this helped a lot!
As we're just starting out, this is really cool and informative! Thanks, as always!
I've been watching film riot since freshman year of high school and 4:30 is that hardest Josh has made me laugh.
All about that prep, bout that prep; no script!
You are filming behind the scenes, right?
Can't wait to see what you guys do!
Thanks so much for all the helpful videos, I know it take alot of time and effort.
so so good

Good luck Ryan. I found this very helpful so ill have to remember this next time I shoot.
I'm super pumped about this!!!
Extra useful as always! Great job Riot! Good luck on the project... So so good :)
Have you ever had the problem of your tungsten lights smoking? Haha! My Lowel pro light had a thin stream of smoke coming out of it for about 8 minutes the other day, I am guessing it is just paint or debris being burned, but I am a little concerned. Thanks!
Stop giving your lights cigarettes
great episode!
Where can I buy that diffusion pop-out panel? 6:39
You guys are awesome! I'm making a short film but having trouble make sense out of my idea!
Whats the short about?? or did I just miss that part? Theres a app Called shot Designer which is a camera blocking, viewfinder and shotlister app.
I loooooooove it!!
4:27 was that a Bill Cosby impression from Josh? It was pretty good if it was.
Great video Ryan, some awesome tips ill be taking into consideration for planning my new short film!!
"Don't forget to feed your cats and crew"
For some reason I laughed out loud at the "So so good" part. Caught me off guard for sure.
Awesome episode :) I can't wait to see it the short film!!!!!

Hi, Ryan! I have great admiration and respect for your work. I'm following you for two years. A question: What do you consider the need to search for the actors time, before or after having everything ready including locations? Thanks a lot for your attention!
Don't let Ryan handle the C-Stands!
Thanks for the Episode !! BAMMIE WHEIM
Thank you for the tips +Film Riot !
Hey fellas, off topic but unsure where to post... I want to desaturate colors in post, but maintain the integrity of the the blacks. Is it just select, invert, then apply desired effect?
What did you use to put your Mac on on your desk? It seems very interesting in order to keep your head up when you write a lot!
Hey Ryan!! I'm new to the filming/video editing scene and hope to work on multiple short films throughout this year. I love your stuff and have watched since you did Film State (Which I miss:(), but I'm pumped to watch your videos here and get the advice I need to make my short films!!
put your body in the shnoop shnoop! 😂😂😂😂 killed me off!!!!!
This infomercial was great!

I use that highlighter method too!
This is very helpful! Thanks Ryan.
Thanks so much. Thinking of making a short film and you guys and your videos are such a massive help. Thanks so much
2:47 ROY NEARY ROCKS!!!
Cool lighting kit setup. It's just too bad that lights are so expensive to buy.
Moritz Holzinger For starters, it's 2.35:1 and 2.3:19 and 2.40;1... no commas. Secondly, 2.35:1 is more common.
Loved it! Learned so much!
I watch this before every shoot!
Gaffer Tape and C47s are life!
anybody know what song he uses for transitions, like at 00:49
Looks like your feeling better. Hope that bug is gone. Another great episode.
Hahaha put your body in it!!! I laughed so much!!!! Josh seems to be a very funny guy
Hey Ryan Connolly when you mentioned custom wrapper I was waiting for a cut away of Josh becoming a "Custom Rapper". Awww dang it. #disappointed
Thanks man! Helped a lot. But the way you did this video reminded me so much of Variant Comics (that's a good thing)
Hey Ryan,
What are your main tips when writing a script?
great tips, thankyou film riot.
So much work!!
What kind of light is that at 6:09 ?
It's a Lowel Pro
Sho Sho good.
It's sho sho good.
There are some things, that i cannot really figure out why you need, like clothespins, (gaff tape) and a swiss knife. what do you use it all for?
C-47s are useful for putting up gels/diffusion, or holding up anything that doesn't need one of those big clamps. Gaff tape as well, and it has a multitude of other uses. The Leatherman also has a multitude of uses. Needless, to say, if you have a set that has lights, rigging, or even just a tripod, these will come in handy.
Paul Ocone Ahh okay, very useful knowledge, thanks man!
What would you recommend for a minimalist guerrilla shoot?
What do you want us to recommend? Your question is extremely vague.
when will we feel we gotta work hard as possible we got to work on it I don't know what to get to the next level so you do what you gotta do and leave the problems behind and film your behind off
Hey Ryan, how do I delete noises in the background of a video?
Examples: cars, wind, and people
You'd probably have to ADR it, or reshoot the video.
Check out Izotope RX3
Whats a shnoopshnoop?😂😂
Ryan!! Are you gonna do another live video chat? that was the coolest thing ever!
you need to start linking the products that you talk about in the descripton plz
My biggest problem is landing these locations so far. I really don't know how to go about it where I come off as professional.
I love this!!!! Thank you so much!
Can you make an episode for m how they did intros for shows like Goliath on amazon prime. I really like the way the intro and how it uses real people and cgi.
Bammie Wham in your next project! Action!
Good timing as I'm doing a short film as well
Funny, I'm shooting a short tomorrow.
What's that stand you have your laptop sitting on?
