My only problem is with the short film I am planning to shoot is supposed to have many scenes outside and I am worried about people thinking the guns are real and having them call the cops on me... :)
I know this was six years ago, but try to let everyone know with a letter/email at least a week before and maybe talk to the police beforehand as well AND put up signs on when youre filming
This is why I love this show. It’s like a filmmaker’s variety show. One week it’s all about cinematography, the next week it might be about DIY lights or props. This week it's cheap guns and maybe next week, who knows. Love those fire assets, are they simulations?
I recommend spraying matte black instead, because the shiny-ness of the toy guns give the cheapness away. And also brushing the corners of the guns with silver paint to give the old worn-out look. I live in a country where airsoft is illegal so I have to do this a lot. Btw awesome episode! Emily was awesome :3
Of course, I'd be careful when painting over the orange tip, people could easily mistake it for a real gun, especially cops. I would add some matte finish to it, so it doesn't look so shiny.
Careful with painting over the orange tips of the guns. In some states and provinces it's actually illegal to do so because it can make some harmless situations very very dangerous. A good alternative to the paint is using black electrical tape or semi-permanent black marker as these are removable after shooting.
Awesome tutorial, I suddenly remembered a lot of my ideas have been tucked away in my notebook after I realized I was going to need some guns. And the knife technique really opened my eyes :)
Film Riot Oh? But you see, then they would most likely try to escape. Did I not specify what sorts of ideas I had? Joking, of course, just had to make the joke with that reply :) The police aren't too high-alert where I live/shoot, and there aren't that many people around, but I will inform them if I don't think it's obvious that we're filming.
Film Riot Good call, the tragic news about the 12 year old playing with a fake gun in the park and being shot by the cops because they could not tell if it was real or fake (no fake indicators). I guess the rule / message here is that if you are making these weapons look real, the police will think they are real and in the States that might mean an armed response before dialogue. So if filming outdoors in a public location let someone know or make is VERY clear you are FILMING a scene.
Andy001z Wow, that's just awful. How can anybody who is considered sane think that was the right call? Even in the extremely unlikely case that the kid would hit somebody IF it was a real gun, for a kid to hit an adult is much better, both statistically and morally, than the other way around. I feel truly sorry for you, having such a paranoid police force. Of course it's not as easy as saying that, there have been a lot of tragedies without the police being there, which has to do with sociological conditions. I won't try to push my views onto anybody, but I do believe there will be fewer such cases with a less capitalist system. Then again, 22nd July here in Norway proved that some people have issues, caused by personal matters nobody could control...
Ok first of all, THANK YOU EMILY! BATTLEFIELD IS SO MUCH BETTER! (before this war starts, if you haven't played on PC you have no say in the matter) Also a quick tip I found while shooting our most recent video (trailer to come soon) is that when I was editing the gun sounds a huge thing is to make it sound like it was played back in the room and not just anywhere, it's like blending compositions in after effects, so if your character is in a hall, don't just put a sound effect, add some reverb on that sweet cookie sound and it will sell the effect wayyyy better than anything you composite. If you make a unique copy of the clip in Audition you can reuse the reverbed sound or the regular one. IT IS A PURE LIFE SAVER!!!!
Spring powered Airsoft guns can be a good, cheap option, especially since they have moving slides/bolts and removable magazines. Some of the spring powered Airsoft pistols are even made of metal, like some of the Airsoft 1911's that you can buy on Amazon.com
this was very helpful! I did a shoot where I had my actor use a prop longsword. I bought a cheap nerf sword and spray painted the heck out of it, but I didn't think to do the metallic edge thing.
For knife blades and similar metallic surfaces, aluminium tape gives you an awesome surface. Also, if he tape surface looks too shiny on camera you can dull it with steel wool or high grit sanding paper.
Some great tips, especially about the rubber gun. Ive broken one of my pistols when an acto had to drop it on a hard floor. Also nice obscure reference from Deep Star Six.
SuperSamStuff, I don't know if this will help. But my brother and I are working on a short film with swords in it and we intentionally made them weird, space age swords so that the audience had nothing real to compare it too. We can sell the props as real swords to the audience without making them realistic. We haven't begun filming yet so I don't know if this will actually work but it's just a thought I had.
The gun Emily is using looks a lot like a $6 gun that can be found at wal-mart. I think the youtuber Knoptop did a review on this same gun a while back. This sounds like a gun similar to what you are describing.
Yeah the 15 buck pistol is a Beretta. Its in Australia too but the gunfire sounds like a 50 cal. Still pretty cool. They also have a double-barrel shotgun
This was perfect for my next short film. Thank you! And I was just wondering for some reason; Ryan did you ever watch "The Sopranos"? Great TV show and they used these gun and knife tricks all the time on that show. Thanks again!
Ryan you need to do movie reviews! Maybe start another channel for those that want to watch? Make it simple so they don't take much effort/time to make! To start off what are you thoughts on Interstellar? Plz thumbs up my comment if u want him to see it and do movie reviews!
Haha, I used the exact same AK47 in my first film that I made a couple of months ago. I just uploaded that same short film onto my channel, I clearly did not hide the plastic-look as well as Film Riot did, but, it did make for a good, and cheap film prop!
Nothing wrong with saying a girl is pretty even if you're an adult, but when that adult has let's call them other intentions it is more of a problem them saying it.
I know the US is a gun country, but when doing a 'shoot' (HA!) outside in public, isn't there some guidance on letter the authorities know, like the police, so you don't get an unnitentional new scene added to your film?
Yes, you should notify the police/contact your local film commission to find out permits you need. Of course, they live in Texas, which is pretty... big on guns. Even so, for a shoot in public in Texas, you should find out what permissions you need.
Paul Ocone Thanks for your reply. I'm in the UK where there is very strict gun control - not even our police routinely carry guns, so if we wanted to do a gun scene we would have to make completely sure all the appropriate authorities, neighbours and passers by knew what was going on.
Great episode guys! Except how they held the guns, you want the stock against the shoulder area. If you hold it through the armpit. The gun would probably go flying behind you!
Negative KP. Depending on your training you can shoot passably well in CQ. Of course, if your of the spray and pray school of thought, your comment is well taken.
Deimante Zeizyte uhh hate to burst your bubble dude but Sun Tzu definitely didnt invent fighting or war for that matter... not even close haha. The human race has been fighting since the dawn of their creation, and animals were fighting and killing before that even. As for war, people waged war between tribes before even the written word existed, and colonies of ants fought wars far before then.
I think Nerf guns is good for acting I seen a hell lot of PDK films , I love it. Laser Tag guns can be suitable for acting too all gotta do is modify the sound effect.
In most movies, they don't even give an f about the realisticity of putting a recoil in a gunshot even in powerful rifles! And now I'm having a hard time finding realistic action movies such as "Extraction" and "Kate" both from Netflix and I'm finding some more.
The prop gun that Emily uses is also available at the Dollar General Store for 5 dollars (if you have those in your area). I have also seen them in Kmart for about that same price. I think Emily should use a crossbow next!! Pull that one off Ryan...it a be cool.
Pretty irresponsible not giving a warning as to why the guns have an orange tip. Most people know it's to signify it's fake but people can be stupid, removing the orange cap means you can now get in wayyyyy more trouble if you're not careful. I think a lot of your viewers are younger and so couldn't hurt to give a quick "Hey! Don't be stupid with this stuff".
I understand how, in the heat of production, Ry might have missed this. So, let me just add another voice saying, it is definitely worth emphasizing this point. In fact, it may be worth an episode. Everybody, EV-ER-Y-BO-DYYYY who has ever worked with these sorts of props has a story about how police, passerby's and other such fun folk were left out of the loop, and how mayhem ensued. Those cheesy orange tips on toy guns are there for a reason. If you modify them or take them off, it can prove both dangerous and expensive if you are not very, very careful. And, as I already suggested, everyone always thinks they have taken enough precautions. And everybody ends up wishing they had taken more precautions, eventually.
Omg I have that black knife! lol actually got it for chrstmas last year and I wasn't sure if I should spray the blade silver cause I liked it black, but now I know what to do!
Hey Film Riot, love your stuff! I'm getting into film-making and I really love the cinematography and all that and so I was wondering what the best entry-level camera would be for shooting films. (And I mean really entry-level, my budget's tight). Thanks, a bunch and keep up the good work!
Regarding props on set, I've always wondered why firearms used in films are real when everything else is more or less a nonfunctional fabrication. Is it possible for the best prop makers in the industry to design and build prop firearms that look, feel, and only APPEAR to operate like actual firearms, (i.e. muzzle flash, recoil, proper weight, load/unload clips and PROP cartridges, etc.), only they fundamentally operate in such a completely different manor that projectile discharge isn't even a functional possibility, even if the props malfunction? Has this already been done for a film and I just missed it? If so, why has this new tech in prop firearm design and operation NOT become the film industry standard?
Hay Ryan, I was wondering if you could do a video centered around the different types of muzzle flashes for different genres of a movie. Ik you did a muzzle flash tutorial a few years ago, but the flashes you've used in this video look a lot more updates. Thanks!
I got a rubber gun a few weeks before this video was posted, and when it was tone for the hand-to-hand Monday challenge, it saved my life. Of course mine is pink because for some reason that was cheaper than the black, so I had to spray paint the shit out of it. Lesson to all: make sure you have spray paint meant for rubber!
Hey Filmriot! I really wanna warn you guys! DO NOT PAINT THE ORANGE TIP OFF YOUR GUN! As required by Federal Law this Airsoft gun is sold with at least a 1/4 orange tip. It is illegal to remove the orange tip. there are very very strict laws for this, you can get fined up to 10.000 dollars. Like this message so they will see this
It is generally required for manufacturers of airsoft or novelty guns to be shipped with an orange or red tip, but there are no requirements to keep them that way for the consumer, or at least it is that way here in Texas (which is where they live). Also, they have said numerous times to warn or inform others in your area that you are handling fake weapons, and to also inform your local law enforcement.
here in Australia we use mostly toy guns for cosplaying and indie filmmaking because we're not allowed airsoft. there are a few groups on the net you can go to if you want to learn how to modify your toy guns to look good enough for close up and even make them work close to a proper gun minus the ability to fire bullets.
Skilled craftman can modify those toys to make them act more realistic. Btw Airsoft guns are not allowed, but how the part side of those? Your could order pretty much whole GBB pistol, modify it so it cant shoot bb's and classify it as prop gun? Other idea is to order new gbb pistol, but ask shop to modify pistol for you, if you have problems with customs.
pattlock Those are pretty good if your just for movie making and you cant have airsoft guns in your country. If you can get airsoft guns into your country, then dont even look into that direction. Didnt see anything related real custom gun work.. buuut i have to say that magpull pts stock was pretty cheap in there^^
I built a badass sci-fi chemical railgun prop with working lights from a NERF Longshot. What sucks is I made it for your Found Footage Monday Challenge and the CG in it had a 4 day render time so I couldn't make the deadline. :P
Love Film Riot! You may have covered this elsewhere, but using toy guns in public, painted in realistic colours is unlawful in some countries, for example UK. 50% of the guns surface must be painted in a range of unusual colours (like blue, orange, red, etc). We have been shooting a sci-fi film and painted water pistols to look like futuristic weapons, the rules even applied to this! Worth bearing in mind ... even if they're plastic!
I think what would be a good update is to first spray the whole gun with that silver metallic paint, then put a matte black paint over it and take a metal wire brush thingy to make it look more authentic to wear and tear.
Ive watched all your episodes and love them, This is the short film i made using all your techniques, Not half as good as yours but learning lots! The Blunderbies , A Short film
Your lighting skills are just getting better all the time. At one stage the comedy sketches looked a little flat but in the new episodes you are really nailing it! I expect the C100 helps a bit as well :) Any chance you could do an episode where you light an entire scene from start to finish? Like something more filmic? A lot of your lighting tutorials are a bit vague. I would love you to do a kind of film school on set thing?
Cool episode. You didn't mention the lighting fx on the actors (espcially on Josh while Arris is shooting), which also really helped to sell the shot :P awesome
My only problem is with the short film I am planning to shoot is supposed to have many scenes outside and I am worried about people thinking the guns are real and having them call the cops on me... :)
Call or email your neighbors and tell them you will be filming, don't be alarmed if there is an armed man in my lawn.
Or call local police department and tell them you will be using realistic Gun props for your movie

Would you rather them use a real gun???!
Actually it's only illegal to sell them without the tip, you can remove them at your own discretion
10$ isn't that bad
Would you guys make a iPhone/Android app in the future? That would be awesome for film makers on low budget! :)
here in Australia we use mostly toy guns for cosplaying and indie filmmaking because we're not allowed airsoft. there are a few groups on the net you can go to if you want to learn how to modify your toy guns to look good enough for close up and even make them work close to a proper gun minus the ability to fire bullets.
Skilled craftman can modify those toys to make them act more realistic.
Btw Airsoft guns are not allowed, but how the part side of those? Your could order pretty much whole GBB pistol, modify it so it cant shoot bb's and classify it as prop gun? Other idea is to order new gbb pistol, but ask shop to modify pistol for you, if you have problems with customs.
check out Black tactical a Singapore website really into toy gun modding
pattlock Those are pretty good if your just for movie making and you cant have airsoft guns in your country.
Finally someone dat likes battlefield wohoo
Thanks for this guys. Have a great Thanksgiving Next week.
another thing you could do is buy martial arts training weapons on amazon, they are quite expensive but they look very good.
I'm with Emily on that one! Show them COD fish what's WHAT! LOL
It's 1 in the morning I can't sleep, thanks guys for being around!
Cool episode. You didn't mention the lighting fx on the actors (espcially on Josh while Arris is shooting), which also really helped to sell the shot :P awesome
Deep Star Six LOL nice ref. I just watched that on Netflix
Love it! Fav and will never forget!
Oh god thank you for this! I have been looking for something like this for so long!
Hey Ryan cant wait for the nwxt episode.

Gotta love how the game was still playing in the background
What's the shotgun called? Or can you leave me the link to it on amazon?
May I ask what camera and supplies you use for your videos? :) Do you use a boom? Please reply! :D
Thank you so much. I've been asking this for months
Excelent!!! Thanks guys!

So that lord of battle sounds are in the package that you guys sell or its separate
Emily was hilarious as always
How were you all able to paint the guns and use them legally? Did you get permits? I want to do the same thing for short films.
Now I can rob a bank without the teller saying: _"That's just your hand pointing in your jacket pocket."_ 👈
*"We've called the police."* 🙄
