RIP John. Such an incredible voice, songwriter, and artist. What a tragic loss so young.
Get Back, I've Got a Feeling, and Dig a Pony (all from the roof top concert) are also great.
The band was having issues at this time, and would break up in little more than a year. At the time they had no way of knowing this would be their last public performance together. Given all that, the joy they had just playing together like the early years is so apparent. They were able to put all the B.S. behind them, for a while at least.

I just commented (before you replayed it) but I forgot to mention, this was a spur-of-the-moment gig, and it weas a COLD morning (6:00am), so the clothes they were wearing were whatever they could grab before going on top of that roof. So, they are wearing their girlfriend's clothes, which amounted to women's winter coats. The fact that it was 6 o'clock in the morning and NOT approved is WHY the cops were there. I believe John's statement, "I would like to say on behalf of the group and ourselves ... I hope we passed the audition" was perfect for the moment. Cheeky and humorous, just as we would expect !!! Well done, guys !!!

Steph, great reaction! Yes, that rooftop concert was the "grand finale" of the "Let it Be" film, from 1970, as well as the "Get Back" film/TV Series (on Disney +), from 2021. They had tried to arrange a more formal concert, once that would be filmed and a documentary released about that performance. However, the Let it Be sessions were extremely fraught, with lots of ups and downs, and they ran out of time and options for something more standard/officially produced. Therefore, they decided to have a short concert on the roof of the building within which they were recording the album and practicing (all the while filming for the documentary). It was great fun, although it was a cold January day in 1969, and the city Police were having to respond to noise complaints, as you saw. The film "Get Back" (directed by Peter Jackson) is very, very good. You really get pulled in by the genius not only of their musicianship but also of their friendship, their brotherhood -- through all the ups and downs. It is such a journey to go through! You should watch it and bond with The Beatles!

  • @thomastimlin1724

Note the moving notes beneath John's singing on George's guitar and Paul's bass being doubled. Called a "countermelody." Genius - it moves the song along better and gives variety to it. I think George was laughing at the camera man on his back trying to get a weird shot of George from below and Paul cracking up at the sight of it.

They got together again to record their final, and greatest album Abbey Road. You can see the entire performance in their documentary "Get Back", or a condensed version in their 1970 movie, "Let It Be". This would be the last time the Beatles would perform live as a band. The original plan for GET BACK was to make a movie about them making a new album. Having quit playing live concerts three years earlier in 1966, the Beatles had made several albums and hit singles between 1966 and 1968 that required extensive overdubs of additional instruments and effects that would have been impossible to pull off live during the 1960s. For GET BACK (1969), the idea was for the Beatles to get back to their rock 'n roll roots and record new songs that could be performed live before an audience. The band initially planned to end the movie with a live concert and perhaps follow with a concert tour, but several members of the band opposed returning to touring (or even a one-off concert). The final compromise was to perform an unannounced show on the roof of their company's office building in London.

John was young when he married his first wife (Cynthia). When he met Yoko, John found his muse, his soul mate. Their love consumed him. Btw, there's a wonderful organ in this song, played by Billy Preston, the 'black' Beatle. Billy started playing with the Beatles near the end of their time together, adding keyboards to the mix. You get a couple peeks of Billy in the video.

Billy Preston’s contributions to this song and the entire sessions adds sooooo much.. it’s the special sauce! Without the keyboard in this track it’s a completely different song. The great Billy Preston on keys. John had a tragic childhood and was cruel to his Father, who was shunted out of his life by his irresponsible, adulterous wife, Julia. Johns' grandfather was a musician who played in minstrel shows in the US in the latter 1800s. This is a pretty deep Beatles track popularized by the recent movie. They had other songs that were much bigger hits in the ‘60s to 1970 and quite a few put to then new music video (we’d call it today). “Revolution” is a famous rocker filmed at the same time as “Hey Jude”, and I’ve seen “A Day in the Life” from their classic Sgt Peppers. “Hey Bulldog” is another rocker making the RUclips circuit , then you can find their older stuff live. Their 1967 “All You Need is Love” simulcast (the first global television simulcast ever) may be out there somewhere l
The video you reviewed here was from a one-off impromptu live concert, as the band stopped touring as a band in 1966 for various reasons, but kept making more studio-only music for a few years later until their breakup (about a year after this was originally filmed)

But this is the first time I've watched an MVid of theirs - so I didn't know Sir PM was actually a leftie. Learn something everyday - dint we'all?
Also of interest, in last few days I've started re-reading Forsyth's, Odessa File. It starts as John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The novel's protagonist describes how he saw the Beatles in Hamburg in the early 60's , made his money writing a feature on them.
One of life's strange coincidences, they were in Germany 5 days before JFK was shot :
Hamburg: They played several gigs at the Indra Club starting in August 1960, followed by performances at the Kaiserkeller and Star-Club until December 1962.
1963 Tour: The Beatles also performed in Germany on November 17, 1963, as part of their European tour, which included concerts in various cities.
These performances in Hamburg were crucial to their development as a band before their rise to fame.

But several years ago Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson was allowed to go through hours and hours of raw footage for the original film. Jackson used new technology to recover and digitally remaster the footage that came out crystal clear. He also digitally remastered & remixed the sound. You can see some of the footage how people in the street below, Savile Row, London reacted to this surprise concert on RUclips.

Steph, very nice reaction. Yoko was not the bad guy. She was very difficult to get along with. The guys were use to women who put them first. John admitted to treating women badly. His ideal woman was Bridgette Bardot from France. He wanted his woman to be blonde, his first wife dyed her hair blonde. He freely admitted that like many people his first son was an accident. Paul was engaged to an actress and he constantly cheated on her. George married a model and they had issues. Ringo’s wife like John’s wife was a fan from Liverpool. George admitted at a dinner party in the early 1970’s that he was sleeping with Ringo’s wife. Breaking up two marriages. As to this rooftop concert, the director wanted a gigantic concert but Ringo had 3 young children and said, going in to the project that he did not want to go outside of England as he wanted to be with his kids. Paul had gone to America and seen the Jefferson Airplane give a rooftop concert. This gave him an idea when the big concert ideas did not pan out.

John and Cynthia got married when they were both very young, and she got pregnant. In those days, that meant you automatically got married. Cynthia was hoping for a nice calm husband who would be sitting by the fire in the evening in his 'jumper" and smoking a pipe. John was not a homebody, and she had the unfortunate timing of meeting him right before the world would take him away. By 1966, the Beatles had over 140 legitimate paternity cases pending that they settled out of court. Most of those pregnant girls were barely 18. Yoko was exotic, strong, and demanding, the opposite of Cynthia who was the girl next door. All kids do dumb things, the Beatles were just under a microscope the whole time, exacerbating the whole process.

The real travesty was the way John and Yoko treated his son Julian. Paul ended up being more of a father figure to him than his real father ever was.

In the part when George laughs, is because John on the first take, got wrong that verse, he forgot the lyrics and that caused hillarity on everyone, that time. And on the actual take, John makes sure to read the lyrics well (because there was a guy in front and below of him, who was layed on the floor with a big paper with the lyrics written on), then, all the group was expecting how was be done this time, but even he did it well, the memory, specially on George, lead them to laugh again.

Meeting your soul mate is a whole other ballgame. Like being in love for the first time. Almost... religious. Better.

The reason the police were there is exactly because people passing by did realise t was the Beatles and quickly several hundred people gathered in the surrounding streets blocking the traffic. The police wanted to halt the performance but I thing ven they realised what a mistake that would have been .

The people casually standing around were employees of the music studio where the Beatles worked (downstairs)...so they weren't strictly speaking an "audience"...which explains their nonchalant attitude.

This was a second take; the reason george was laughing i believe was because john forgot the lyrics and just sung nonsence😂😂😂

Yes, the line, "I'm in love for the first time," has always struck me as unnecessarily cold. Even if he'd never been in love with Cynthia, there was still no reason to share that with the world.
