The TESLA of Vans(?) FIRST DRIVE! The

  • This video has been done with the support of Canoo and is all taken at face value and incorporating my real lived (all be it brief) experience with both the vehicle and the people of Canoo. My impression that this is the Tesla of Vans is based on the way that Tesla changed the landscape for electric cars. My feeling this has the potential to do the same for Vans...
    The feedback has been honestly given and well received. They are clear that some things have to change ahead of a UK launch. Their model allows for this and has been evidenced by the way they have won accounts in the US. Not least the United States Postal Service!
    Realistically this vehicle will be available in 2025 but given the quality of the drive many people may be asking for this sooner rather than later!
    Great range and charging speed as standard also with a high level of configurability which is due to their aim being to be an extension of your business!
    Watch this space for more on Canoo as they build a platform from which to launch here in the UK.

      Unfortunately a significant margin of their budget is blown on their CEO's salary. They are trying to survive by getting government contractual orders because Canoo is corrupt and mismanaged. Which is unfortunate, because the concept is solid.

      @@ArizonaPoet No, you don't get "perks" when your company is a start up and is solidly in the red. He's a billionaire, he wants to fly in his private plane, he should be paying that out of his own pocket until they actually make money or fly commercial like anyone else does. Walmart is one of the largest and most profitable publicly traded companies and doesn't even pay for the pens that corporate officers use in meetings. Companies don't make money buy paying their CEO's "perks" for not making the company any money. This shows that the company is mismanaging funds and not doing everything possible to maximize their return on investment.

    The configurability bodes very well for campervans. The 190 looks like it might actually be big enough (unlike the SWB Buzz which really is a bit too tiddly (like this 130 size) at 3.8m3. the 4.8m3 is only slightly smaller than a SWB vivaro B (5.2) for example. The drive-by-wire and all that unconstrained space should make for some really interesting possibilities. Like what do we do with all that front-space? 'Storage' seems like a good start. 80kWh is bigger than the SWB buzz and PSA vans, but smaller than the Buz LWB. So depends on efficiency of drivetrain and aero for how that compares on real-world range. I look forward to some Bjorn tests.
    Was there any mention of V2G? This is important for campers which spend a lot of time on the drive.
    And of course when will it actually arrive and what sort of price?
    I hope that Cannoo's attitude to configurable hardware and making things their customers actually want extends to software configuarability. How are they to deal with in terms of changing stuff (or even better letting us change stuff ourselves in order to add camping-mode functions that they probably haven't bothered with yet)?
    I'm guessing we'll have to wait at least another year before this thing actually turns up?

    • @electricvanman
      @electricvanman  2 месяца назад +3

      Yes probably a year for full UK entry and then maybe a little longer before wider availability for Camper style conversions. That said when they come there is V2G capability so there should plenty of options on that front.

    • @xxwookey
      @xxwookey 2 месяца назад +4

      @@electricvanman I don't mind doing my own conversion - in fact I think I'd prefer to, but it's a massive time investment so I'm still waiting for the right base. And of course getting changes to the base to suit camper applications requires more than just one-offs. I don't know if canoo have already thought about this for the US market, so may have something in their design stash.
      So you are saying that they already do V2G? Or have just promised it? That's very good news if so.

    A hell of a lot of van users wont need anywhere near a ton of load carrying capability. The opening door would be a lot better to use than the sliding one too, especially if converted to a camper. Not as good in tight spaces though I agree.
    I also like my vans to be fun. Most arent, but you can make changes to improve them. Why should they just be boring when you can spend every day of your working week in them. More fun vans please!
    Im very interested in these. I think the modular ability in the rear is fantastic and really well thought out. Same applies to the cab area. Range is sufficient too and better than the other small electric van alternatives.. even the mediums too, apart from the buzz.

      The average daily mileage here in the UK of a working van is around 80 miles. But somewhere between 100 and 150 miles Will be suffice for at least half of the market. The charging speed is quite high also which means a quick boost of 50 or 75 miles would be perfectly possible in less than 15 minutes.

      @simongordonx 2 месяца назад +1

      As stated
      Round town.
      With traffic as it is. A 400 mile range would make it a more feasible alternative. Winter driving with heating on would also make things difficult. Don't get me wrong, it looks nice, but I am a professional van driver, a trip from Leicester to Exeter would be a 2 day trip, not a single day, as of present.
      Even a trip to London would add hours of charge time to the journey.
      Thus, a hybrid would work.
      This vehicle needs more real-world thought.
      Maybe it should be a Recreational Vehicle.

    two things that are simultaneously great, and troubling. The forward visibility is great - I would just worry about road debris penetrating the passenger cabin. I would prefer a flat screen connected to a forward looking camera, with a reinforced metal front "shield" instead (especially on American roads and roads in the developing world were a stray piece of rebar on the road can make for a very bad day). Also, the drive-by-wire looks like it may induce a video game effect which may take some getting used to - not sure if the steering has any artificially induced feedback to make it feel more connected to the wheels despite DBW. I do love that these vehicles were designed with the second and third owners in mind when it comes to maintenance.

I think eventually, every new vehicle will have DBW steering. Many vehicles have had DBW brakes for some time and customers don't even realize. I'm just curious what it feels like when you hit an irregularity in the road while in the middle of a hard corner - normally this gets translated back to the driver via the steering wheel. I was just curious if you noticed any artificial feedback during your test. The Korean's (KIA) in particular are tearing the EV van/small truck picture out of the same book but I would rather buy a product produced in the US if it's competitive.
