Thanks Doug for another considered review. Really like the EV3’s exterior and interior. This could well be a replacement for our ID3, at the end of the year.
Kia also announced that they will be building this car in Mexico to qualify for the US ev tax credits and will be priced at $30k for the base model (not sure if that includes the $7,500 credit in that price or not) either way a nice thing to see more cost effective cars coming to the North American market instead of getting another $100k+ truck or three row SUV.
I would recommend you lease at the moment. I have a friend who works for Audi and they are replacing EV battery cells at 3k a pop under warranty at the moment. Its still very new tech. Honda have gone hybrid 1500cc engine with EV battery that gets charged by the engine. 60 ish MPG I believe. Honda and Toyota do not believe long term Japan can produce enough green electricity for all these EVs. Personally I'm still firmly on the fence regarding full EV's

Excellent review & car. Disappointed that remains FWD and probably prone to torque steer especially in the wet. Will salivate over a potential GT or “N” spec AWD version in the future. Ioniq 5N is nice but just too big. This is perfectly sized for a hot EV. Only other disappointment is the slowish charge speeds. Other 400v cars now do 150-170kW, (and Tesla 240+ kW with 400v!), so no excuse really but the charge curve is more relevant than charge speed, so let’s see.
Although I like this EV3 (almost bought the EV6 GT, but opted for the Model S), the lack of AWD and the low charging speed are a deal breaker for me. Does it have NACS charging capabilities?
At this price point? Can't think of any. Tesla is the $30-40k EV standard of course but the lack of physical buttons plus me hating elon musk both make me want to pursue an EV3.
Very nice and will sell well, Kia are a force to be reckoned with. Charging speed is low, could have done better. Better than an EV6? No way, not even close. I will be keeping my EV6 which is better looking than the newer facelift version.
I'd buy the 250mile one if it had faster charging, I think under 20mins 10% to 80% would make having a longer range vehicle less of an issue. Seems a bit daft to not have the same charging speeds as the EV9 and EV6. Why not offer faster charging as an option to both the short and long range models for those that can afford it?
I’m very interested in this if it comes out as an AWD with at least 300 hp. I’m after a hot hatch and this could be it. The Volvo EX 30 has gone minimalist and that’s a deal breaker for me. I just see cost cutting. Other than the dysfunctional location of the climate controls this seems like a very sensible mixture of style and functional design. This is a bit small, but if I’m getting more range while maintaining good horsepower, I’d be willing to sacrifice the space. I actually like driving a smaller car. All that said I’d probably prefer the EV 5 but Kia isn’t bringing that to the US any time soon.
Nice interior. However, I personally am not so keen on the exterior design. From the side it looks more like a military utility vehicle. Can't imagine the box-like shape does much to improve efficiency.
Cd figure of 0.26 - so, surprisingly aerodynamic - SUVs usually above 0.35. Saloons between .25 and .3. Designers have much better understanding of aerodynamics in recent times, with computer modelling and the likes.
It's like they designed it without considering the steering wheel. They should make that part of the steering wheel clear or put a tiny QLED screen there so you can see what's behind it.
For the refresh or update KIA should have the AC fixed on the bottom of the LCD screen instead of in that weird awkward space. But I'm loving everything else about this SUV.
Great video. Really like the idea of being able to use a laptop whilst driving, it saves so much time as you can work whilst driving, particularly on motorways, which are boring, and especially useful to watch videos or play games in traffic. OMG! I just leased a new Niro EV Wave -- is this EV3 smaller than the Niro? The Soul is a big smaller and I found the shape so frumpy. I really do love my Niro EV and have had it for just one week.
KIA seem to have come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years. Strangely I like the look of this EV if they carry the proto type styling through to the production model that is!! However in your, 11 degrees C, EV testing at Mill brook I noticed the figures for these vehicles in the UK at least are around 100 miles less than the official figures so 255 miles becomes a true figure of around 155 miles realistic range.
Had me until the slow charging. I love my Ev6 fast charging. Kind of leaning towards the updated 2025 Ev6, ev9 or maybe even lucid as our next car when this lease is up.
When a 6lb battery can move a 3000lb vehicle 20/25 miles in snow, freezing cold, sizzling heat, up or down a mountain and still run the heater , AC, radio , power steering and other misc. accessories, like a convertible top movement or cell phone charging then Ev will have a chance, Maybe. There will still be charging issues , battery replacement issues and of course the ridiculous cost issues. Basically that's the E=mc2 of electric vehicles.
Still a bit confused by these leccy cars' estimated range. Is the mileage of 255 and 350 miles (depending on battery) based on a full 100 percent charge? Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've seen and read you shouldn't charge more than 80 percent, which would give mileages nearer to 204 and 280 miles! Am I missing something here? Filled up my petrol XCeed this morning and got an estimated range of 440 miles, this includes the last 20 percent I can use if I want!! If this is the case, it's a bit misleading from electric car manufacturers.
It's not misleading at all. When you need the full range for long trips, you charge to 100%, however 80 to 90% daily is better for battery longevity. Few people actually drive over 100 miles / 150 kms daily, and many EV owners charge at home overnight.
Do you know if standard and long range versions will be available at launch? Range for these? What will be braked towing limit.? I’ve got great variation on reviews. Local dealers don’t know. Kia uk refer me to dealers. Grr.
Yeah Now the EV6 Wind is basically the same price as a Tesla 3 in the US. With non Tesla DC charging absolutely trash in the US I don't see how Kia thinks they're competing with these price points. Especially with all the 12 volt battery issues along with other electrical issues causing EV6 and EV9s to freeze up and need some electrical connections to be reseated.
what is it about motor journalist and climate controls ? It's AUTOMATIC you set the temperature ONCE and never touch it again. so how cares about where on the screen it is?
