  • Comparison of the Gen 5 Glock 17 and Glock 19. What are the benefits of the longer slide and extended grip. If I had to choose either the G17 or G19, which would I choose? The Glock platform is awesome and affordable, so which should you choose and when is the Glock 17 better than the Glock 19.

The Glock 17 is the reason Glock is a brand. If I could only own one pistol it'd be the 17. If I could own two pistols it'd be two Glock 17s.

I’ll take a 19 over. I got the option for my Sheriffs office it be issued a 17 or 19 and I chose a 19. Especially because we are required by law to carry off duty and I am not going to try concealing a 17 😂

The 19x/45 is better. Shorter slide for quicker draw for conceal carry, the extra half inch barrel in the 17 has marginal difference in velocity to were it’s un noticeable. And the 19x/45 has the extra 2 rounds like the 17. The 17 is useless and only exist for nostalgia at this point. There’s no point to own a 17 to me when the 19x/45 exist

Most of the difference in the 2 is pretty negligible. I personally prefer the 19. Maybe it's just a mental thing it just seemed to fit me and ballence better. On the other hand, my friend who has considerably larger hands like the 19x/45/17 grip size. There really is a glock for everybody. If anyone has a chance to try out multiple models, you will probably fall in love with one or the other.

The glock 17 barrel is only half and inch longer and when compared your gaining maybe around 30 fps is that in that extra length. The longer 17 doesn’t add any value over a 19 other than have +2 higher round capacity

Something that I have not seen anyone mention when comparing the G17, G19X and G45 to the G19 is magazine "compatibility". The G19's 15 round mags are useless in the G17, 19X and G45 but not the other way around.

The preference for the G19 might be an American thing.
Globally the G17 is far more widely sold than the G19, but that might be due to government or Defense procurements.
In its home market Austria the G17 outsells the G19 at least 2:1. Then again concealed carry there is rare, and the Austrians respect the G17 for it starting Glock pistols and it’s role in the Austrian armed forces.
