If you want a "down on the farm," Lancaster County, Amish Family recipe you can use or not, Caraway seeds if you like, (I like the Caraway), but you need a yellow / strong onion, and Granny Smith Apple because the "eating" apples are too mild. The apple is to add more sour to the kraut not sweetness. If you don't rinse the kraut, it's a more authentic flavor, but more salty. This is Guistwite, Shelly family, 1940s way of cooking. 😊
My Mother always made this with potato dumplings as a side. With pork gravey. Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight. I hope it's half as good as Mom's.
Wow....this really grabs me. I've got a bone in shoulder roast I'm sure I can make work. Thank you for sharing . You are such a bright happy person. I really enjoy your videos. God bless all here.
Love the videos! Being from "Pennsylvania Dutch country" (York, Pa.), our family tradition also always is to have knepp with our pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day. (Knepp are basically big dough balls cooked on top of the sauerkraut, -- but SO good with the sauerkraut and sauerkraut "broth". )
My mother-in-law made potatoe dumplings, then fried with chopped bacon. Served with pork roast & sauerkraut. Must be a PA thing. Called sauerkraut & collies
I almost added the Caraway seeds this year! I know I would like the flavor. I learned my family is all about tradition!! Moving forward, this is the recipe I'll use. Thanks Anne✅
Try cooking it in the oven with potatoes and a bit of Carraway seeds. Grandma used to make it that way. Dont forget to get a fatcap. It gets all crispy.
Looks delicious! We always serve pork and kraut for New Years! We lived in PA years ago and everyone in my family made a version from kielbasa, pork loin, chops. Can’t wait to try yours!
Melissa Newman this is called a Boneless Pork Pot Roast. Check their website because I think some of their meat is available in local stores…it says there’s a location in McMurray that carries their products.
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for trying it out for your family and sharing the results. I hope it becomes a new tradition for your family--we love it!
This looks so amazing! Thanks so much for sharing. I really like that you added apples & sweet onions. Can't wait to try this! I plan to freeze dry it to have ready for a quick meal or an emergency. 😊
The pork looks so tender and flavorful! I didn't really like sauerkraut or other pickled foods growing up too, but I really developed a taste for it later on, and turns out its really good for you! Happy New Year! Hope you and your family have a great 2020! Looks like you are already off to a great start with this delicious pork meal!
Hello Anne!! I make sauerkraut the same way!! This year I tried Apple Castle's cabbage (they make it there), omg so good! You need to have MaryLynn send you some!!
I've never heard of it being served over noodles, but hey...w/ever works! :) Yes...the only thing missing is heaping that on top of some buttery potatoes!
Using this recipe but with homemade sauerkraut given to me in a jar. The jar doesn’t have any sauerkraut juice in it so I suppose I will add 1 cup of water. Not sure if I should do less or more than that. Any suggestive help would be appreciated.
Terry Tarbeck thanks! I haven’t tried it, but I think that would be just fine considering the apple pieces totally break down by the end anyway! Let me know if you make it 😊
Haha well I don't have a browning feature in my slow cooker so it saves me from having to wash another pan. With a pork roast or pork shoulder though, it breaks down into super tender pieces of meat, so unlike a pork loin it's not as essential to lock in those juices. I know it adds extra flavor though!
Ask your mother-in-law about Ham pot-pie note it is nothing like those frozen chicken pot pies from the market its another Pa Dish mostly had after a big ham dinner
Also, chicken pot pie, beef pot pie. Anytime you cook a meat and have broth, you can make pot pie with the leftover meat and broth! (or from scratch!). And as you said, Josh, not like the frozen pies. Some people here call it "slippery pot pie" because it is made with pot pie noodles -- not pot pie in a pie with crust.
Thank you so much for helping a single dad to learn to make this for new years!
Happy New Year!
try adding some Caraway seeds next time also...brings in a great flavor as well. PA native here
Ooh great tip, thanks!

Pork roast, kraut, caraway seed and a 12 oz beer. Cook low and slow in the oven. 😋
Missed it this year. Grew up in Lancaster county so I am very familiar with it.
My Mother always made this with potato dumplings as a side. With pork gravey. Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight. I hope it's half as good as Mom's.
YUM!
I'm cooking it with potatoe dumplings or collies on the side too. Homemade collies then fried with bacon served with pork & sauerkraut
Omg apples n brown sugar n onions WOW deff. A make!!
It's SO good!
Having this tomorrow with my Mommy and daddy going to be bussin bussin

God bless all here.
Thank you!
Looks Amazing! Happy New Year!👍❤️
Yum! I like the addition of the apples. We always have this on New Years day as well, to bring good luck to the New Year!
Happy New Year!
Thanks for watching! Yes, the apples and onions are subtle, but I like the flavor better than just straight sauerkraut. Happy New Year!

Looking into that for next New Year's Day...YUM!

I never knew people had "traditional" New Year's dinners. We usually only have holiday dinners for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Made this yesterday for my family and it was amazing. Thank you for the recipe. I used a pork loin and it was sooooo freaking good!
Happy new year! That’s awesome! We ate it too 🙌🏻

Oooh sounds delicious. Noted about the fatcap!!

YUM! I don't think you can go wrong whatever meat you choose! We had Kielbasa and hot dogs at my mother-in-law's house this year, and it was SO good.
One of my favorite meals!!! Can't wait to make it in a couple days
It's SO good! I typically only eat this on New Year's Day, so I was happy to have an excuse to make it an extra time this year!
@@AnnesFamilyRecipe Do you know what cut this is? I would love to drive to Logan but it's over a hour from me. I'm not finding a pot roast at GE
Melissa Newman this is called a Boneless Pork Pot Roast. Check their website because I think some of their meat is available in local stores…it says there’s a location in McMurray that carries their products.
You could substitute a pork shoulder aka a pork butt. I know GE & Aldi carries those!
Thank you so much! I’ll keep my eye out for Logan Family Farm in the grocery store. I’ll have to take a road trip someday soon. Love your videos!
That looks so delicious and so tender. Happy New Year🥳
Happy New Year, Catherine!
Need to boil some bow tie pasta and then fry them in oil and butter and pile this on top. Looks Amazing 😻
oh my gosh that sounds SO good!
I’ve never heard of this! Looks good
Thanks! It is and very simple, too!
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I prepared it for my family for New Years Day. It was a hit!!
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for trying it out for your family and sharing the results. I hope it becomes a new tradition for your family--we love it!
Yum! This sounds and looks delicious!
Thanks!
Thanks for a great recipe. You are so wonderful a cook.
Hello Anne, Happy New Year to you and your Family!!! What a delicious Meal!!!
Happy New Year, Ellen!
This looks so amazing! Thanks so much for sharing. I really like that you added apples & sweet onions. Can't wait to try this! I plan to freeze dry it to have ready for a quick meal or an emergency. 😊
Sounds perfect-hope you enjoy the results!
That looks so easy. I will have to try it.
Yes--that's the best part. So much flavor from so little effort!
Looks delicious! Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thanks Rhonda! Same to you!

Thanks, same to you! Yes, I just tried Kimchi for the first time this year and liked that, too.

Yum! We usually make sandwiches but I think rice, noodles or potatoes would be awesome to soak up that sauce!
My mom always put caraway seeds in hers. Looks so yummy 😋

I think that will be enough! The cabbage will release some moisture as it cooks. Plus you can always add more if needed as it cooks.
Cool video. Great choice of music. Can I use applesauce instead of Gala apples?
Terry Tarbeck thanks! I haven’t tried it, but I think that would be just fine considering the apple pieces totally break down by the end anyway! Let me know if you make it 😊
YUMMY❤
❤
People from Pennsyltucky never brown the meat first for some reason
Haha well I don't have a browning feature in my slow cooker so it saves me from having to wash another pan. Ohh I'm on it! My sister might have some insight too--she lives in Lancaster County and tries all kinds of PA Dutch recipes.
U can buy that at any store with that amount of fat it will come out just as tender just ask your local butcher
Good tip--thanks! It was absolutely falling apart--so good!
She's way too excited.
I mean it does taste REALLY good.
I know people like this but it stinks up the house sooooo bad. Not worth it sorry
Lol you have a point! We power through though for that tender, delicious pork!
