An old soul. Simple as. Writes songs from the heart and with meaning and emotes it with as much soul as Otis Redding, as much restraint as Smokey Robinson and with real conversational language akin to early 90's David Gray, but with his own unique voice. A true inspiration in these times of fake posturing and mind numbing blandness. He makes me feel like my childhood heroes did. Carry on the good shit Ray.
I think this guy has got the BEST voice I have heard in a long time! I have had troubles with my husband and I just put this music on and it is like the world stops and it is just us, this music heals my soul!!!!
Dear mom: Ray LaMontagne holds a really, really special place in my heart. This musical genius was working in a shoe factory when he heard a Stephen Stills song one morning, and suddenly decided in a flash of inspiration to quit his job and pick up a guitar. I can't get over the thought of how ballsy that was, and what a bohemoth of an artist he became from the simple decision one day to just go for it. His music is absolutely transcendent for me now, and he is to my later years what Dave Matthews was to my earlier years. This song will just never leave my mind after Bob and I slow-danced to it in the living room the day he moved out of our perfect little house on Cargil Lane. One of those moments you can never forget.
I used to listen to this song on repeat during quarantine and now I get emotional once I listen to it again after two years remembering that hard time 😭
Heard him for the first time last week... Can't believe this song is almost 10 years old... What cave was I under -_- Absolutely in love with his music!!!
I think real musicians like Ray, Brandie Carlile, Michael Grimm, etc... that don't sell their souls to huge music labels don't get the exposure they deserve in the regular media! Irrelevant tho cause their music/voice/art speak for the artists they are.
Ray got major radio play in Maine . I got his cd .. but no one I knew heard about him yet and I was such a spaz and wanted them to hear him. He definitely blows my mind.
You know its a good musician when their live music is consistently better than the studio version, i think ray is one of the greats of our time. (PS no price would be too high for these versions on vinyl!!!)
+Jordan Kahlbau Its not vinyl, but I have a high quality audio version of this whole concert, email me rosslev@gmail.com if you would like to have it too.
+Jordan Kahlbau i also feel the same way about Passenger, i prefer his live versions to some originals. They should do a song together on cd and live of course.
it is so important that he says "you will shelter me and I will shelter you" because he's saying in order for this to be healthy, I'm not convincing you to love me, we will both shelter each other
@@allisonsingsromance4167 doesn't HAVE to be about lovers per se. To me it's about humanity helping each other get through this painful world, in general.
This song is the best of us devoted to the ones we love the most. It is friendship, love, an offering of all of who we are to the best of all we've known. Articulated and set to music by a masterpiece of a musician.
my sister sent this to me a few months ago. i added it to my favorites and it came on one night when we were sitting in my room drunk. i cried like a baby and she held me. this is now our song i think :)
I was introduced to ray la montagne about 10 years ago by a beautiful Scottish girl at a café! She goes you don't know real music until you hear this.... she gave me a copy of his first album and I've been hooked ever since! Too bad I moved back home and never got to see her again : (
Following the release of his first album I became an obsessive fan, he came to Glasgow and me and the wife were there. A solitary figure came walking on to the stage with his guitar and the minute he opened his mouth to sing me and my wife just welled up, a special ability, almost supernatural performance. I saw him twice after that both times great but nothing could top the first time we saw him. Spiritual.
Why is this man not mainstream and a HUGE star??? He has tons of talent and amazing songs!! He should be a household name, but so many I talk to have never heard of him..I SAY TO THAT...WHAT!?!?! NO WAY!?!?!? Once they listen, they are hooked!!
Heidi Sweeden ikr, with all that talent he should be huge! I just recently discovered him myself, I saw him on Love for Levon doing Tears of Rage, and that's all it took I instantly fell in love with that voice :)
Rare genius. And difficult to capture with relatively simple things like video cameras and a few placed microphones. Even a well crafted, warm, recording studio where producer Ethan Johns created a comfortable space to lay down perfect takes of songs like "Trouble" and "Hold You in my Arms" still require the live charge of a songwriting and performance force that only the brilliant positive charged wires from a Ray Lamontagne can provide. Those live wires, connected to the musician's bare soul are priceless. But congrats, and props, etc to BBC 4 for capturing the magic on a soundstage across the pond where so many top performances have inspired so many more. Having seen Ray several times, his onstage comfort level translates over directly into the listener's enjoyment. Exponentially. Ray and this collection of players delivers the goods; we are indeed fortunate the gear was rolling. Hard to picture a world where a minute of this wouldn't connect to the listener on a deep level where the good stuff resonates. Brilliant.
I had the privilege of seeing him live years back. I ended up going by myself because nobody knew his music in my circle. I was so happy and moved I cried!!! Amazzzzzing and truly talented, he's a gem!
BY FAR one of the best live performers I have ever listened to. His voice is perfect. This is the best relaxing music. It appeals to a wide variety of music-listeners, from pop to classic rock and everything in between. Absolutely amazing. Love it.
This man captures you with his soul...His voice stops you in your tracks and makes you pay attention...brings tears to my eyes and heals the heart...Love Shelter...Love Ray!
This song and performance are top-to-bottom brilliant, loved this track for like 13 years now. But you know that part that gets me? This is clearly a post-breakup song if you listen to the verses. This is about two people who stay friends/love each other, even after the romance is done, hearts were broken, etc. Definitely gets me in the feels, esp. since it came out early in my ex-wife (and still friends) and I'z relationship, and we used to love it back then, with no clue how prescient it would eventually become.
This is so so good.... totally unspoilt, I love the sound of the electric guitar, and of course Ray's unique voice is such an amazing instrument, beautiful song, 2 wounded souls giving each other comfort in this crazy harsh world, I love how the violins seep in, it really is a tip top performance, Rays voice is so damn cool! I never forget when I first heard Mr Lamontagne, I was in a pub getting ready to do a gig, I think it was called The Eagle, our slide guitar player knew the landlord, and asked him to play Ray's "Trouble" album .....blew me away man......I think Ray's voice could touch the heart of a worn out street dog ....pure soul power ...... been a fan ever since ....
I never heard of this singer before now...sent by a friend. What a terrific voice!,The music is equally wonderful. I just closed my eyes and soaked it all in.
I cannot get over this song. like everyone else here- how did I not hear of this guy before today!?! I will listen daily- and it will leave me in the best mood, such soul and heart bein poured out of his mouth. you. will. shelter me. my love. and i, i will shelter you. beautiful
Found Ray about 8 years ago, i will never let him go. Gritty, deep, a sound that was familiar from day one, a sound that was already inside yet not heard. Thanks for sharing ;-)
This is one of the best pieces of recorded music in history! The first song itself is so powerful and the performance by every musician is genuinely outstanding! Thankfully this exists and long may music like this be made x
I completely agree with you. It was recorded in England by the BBC and the whole session was originally here on RUclips but sadly it's been cut and copied. I believe it's perfection.
I remember listening to this, heart broken over my ex almost 10 years ago. Ray has that ability to take you back to a single day or time. Damn you man 😭😭😭

Happy that I have other;s who feel as I do about Ray. He is amazing! Absolutely PURE. Being pure, is a very difficult thing to be and to do in the world. He doesn't shove himself down anyone"s throat. He is a true artist in a unique way. I would have loved to grow up with him and be in his family. They must have been cool to turn out such a lovely beautiful man.
He's got it! Period! Beautiful Soul! Would love to hear him and Amos Lee together, old violin, ah their both incredibly soulful singer's, real! Rare these day's!
I saw him live about 11 years ago at Newcastle City Hall. No one would come with me as they’d never heard of him so I bribed my 15 year old to go and I swear she was rocking up the aisle to Three More Days. Loved it 😍
Ray is like the only artist that I seek out the live videos rather than the studio stuff. I've got all his albums, and they're all incredible, but these songs are just so much better when Ray does them live. They are so much more powerful, and his voice.... live his voice just seems to have so much more soul. I swear he is like an exorsist casting the soul from within him out. I bet if you paused the video at certain times, you might actually be able to see the soul escaping. But who in their right God Damn mind would want to pause Ray Lamontagne?
This voice reaches deep in my soul... Your lyrics are so intense and written with such beautiful emotion... Love Love this performer.!!! Thank you Ray for sharing your wonderful talent!!!
Completely fullfills the emptiness and void left from a distructive relationship. Ray you have done what your calling demands of you. you are undeniabely one of the most heart moving singers to ever be conceived by the hand of God.
Stripped back, stark and utterly beautiful, this man's a gem worth digging for and such a shame there's so much shite music in the mainstream when u have this available
There are artists that transcend their perceived genres and can't be denied by anyone. They don't come around too often. Take it from someone who would usually be listening to hip-hop or R&B tell you this guy and the Avett Brothers are undeniably brilliant. This is authentic American music. You could hear all the traditions jazz, blues, rock, gospel, mountain music, it's refreshing.
He’s not underrated. He’s your favorite singer’s favorite singer.

What an amazing man. Ray is so underrated in the musical world, but does he care? No, he doesn't.
Very underrated. I just looked up guitar tabs for a song of his and noticed 100s of his other songs. Wth people?!

Sounds like 300% better than on the records...
Amaing work, Ray !
I saw him Live a few years ago in Burlington Vermont. I cried through almost the whole show. Truly moving
