It's interesting that spending a bit more on an iron is a better investment than spending more on a fancier sewing machine. I completely agree, and I've heard from many other sewists who also agree, it's just interesting. I'm still sewing (well, sewing again) with my 35-year-old basic machine and it does everything I need it to do.
I know right? I always feel like a basic sewing machine even without bells and whistles is made to last…but an iron doesn’t follow the same rules lol. My dad always told me to get a good Iron, toaster, and blender…you’ll never go wrong lol.
I bought a new duvet cover at a thrift store and have made quite a few pillow case dresses for my Operation Christmas Child boxes. Look outside the box for fabric ideas.
PDF patterns are a wonderful invention! I started sewing back in the 60’s! Back then there was only one size in a pattern. There was no information in the way of adjustments either. No FBA, no forward shoulder or sway back adjustment. Just length. Patterns have come such a long way. I so appreciate pattern testers and Sewing RUclips channels! The one thing my first sewing teacher in the 7th grade taught me was the importance of ironing after every step.
Donna, You are truly a person who understands how things have changed over the years. How amazing all of the wonderful additions we have access to now! thank you for commenting.
You are delightful to watch. I wish I had known a lot of these things before I started. Haven't made garments in 40 years, but am going to try. I've been making quilts for the past 30 years. Thank you and Ellie and Mac for the videos, great advice.
Love the list! I should really look at a new iron for my room. I have a very big rule in the craft room. "Don't sew when your tired!" My husband even quotes it at me. I use to love to just puss through and finish because I was so close, but I always ended up having to rip out stitches, or wreaking something and having to come back and fix it later.
You are adorable girl. Spot on for all 10. I taught myself even though my dad was a tailor before I was born. I still have fitting issues that make me cry if I don’t get them right. That’s why I haven’t sewn my own clothes in a very long time. Mostly love sewing bags and quilts now. Sewing machine have come a long way in my years. Just make things that make you happy.
I use previous sewing projects that I no longer use or wear. Like a dress I made for a specific event. I needed a new skirt so I pulled off the top and added elastic to the skirt. The original fabric was $10 per yard and looked great, but now it has a whole new use and cost $0.
OH YES! This is a fantastic idea. I feel like many sewists can go digging into that pile of items that have served their purpose and create new purposes for it. :-)
I am so glad I found you. I JUST started making clothes. Two weeks of learning my machine, practicing how to sew straight, familiarizing myself with the pattern, pinning, cutting. I think I will try making something with scraps first. HAD NO IDEA there is pdf patterns, or groups.
Omgosh Ny.... PDF patterns pretty much scared me to no end that’s why I ended up buying heaps of paper patterns... now I’m addicted to PDF patterns lol... but I’ve got a projector on my wish list...(saving $ from buying heaps of paper and ink) but first.... a cover stitch machine is my biggest #1 wish for my sewing. I used to not pre-wash my fabric.... now it’s a must for me regardless of where I bought it from. I always use my machine on cold wash... saves $ and I can wash dark fabric with dark colours... Anyhou, thanks for sharing your Awesome tutorials with us Ny.... I always enjoy them. Cheers from Australia :)
OH HI!!! thanks for watching! I know it may seem a little daunting at first (PDF patterns)! I couldn’t understand at first how they worked. I don’t even remember my first pattern…I think it was from Ellie and Mac back when they were (little 4 a while). I honestly still print some patterns, becuase many haven’t switched over to Projector files. I also like to have my size already when I’m ready…I think my projector slightly scares me…but mostly just gives me a reason to procrastinate lol! I got mine used on ebay…not a bad purchase. :-) I hope you find one that you love when it’s time! take care…have a great week!
We share a similar journey! I’ve been sewing most of my life, and couldn’t figure out why some of my makes didn’t fit properly. The full bust adjustment was a mind blowing epiphany! Most of the useful things I’ve learned about sewing I’ve learned in the past 5 or so years (I’m largely self taught).
WOW! isn’t is amazing the little things we have learned? I think PDF companies spoil us immensely with the things they freely teach us in their blogs, vlogs and on their group pages. I feel (and I may be biased) that Ellie and Mac does such a good job of trying to cover so many adjustments…and that’s sooooooo wonderfully extra!!
Yes, I think often it’s about finding a GOOD quality iron. I have found that research is my best bet! Thanks for watching Sharon!!!! You bring me cheer!
I wish I had realized that I really only need a straight stitch and an occasional zigzag. I would have saved a fortune on the machine i bought will all the bells and whistles that i dont use.
Ny, so glad to find you. Check it out....#7 being so tired at 1in the morning you can’t remember which way to turn the wheel because you have just sewn your finger to the machine🤯🙀. Your so fun and right on the money with allll the beginner tips.
Ny, I’m a beginner sewist so I thoroughly enjoy each and every video you make. You have taught me so much! I appreciate your hard work and effort. It is noticed and valued. Thank you! ❤️🧵
A PDF pattern is a digital pattern you download from the internet (www.ellie and mac.com) and you get not only just a pattern, but you get EVERY size of that pattern, in 3 digital types…projector, print at home, and print shop. You can select and print what ever size you want, as many times as you like. Then the instructions include pictures step by step. It’s really wonderful! Totally check it out!!!
I understand why you would shop at Goodwill but I will not shop there because they are not a non profit anymore. I will not shop Hobby Lobby because of there views against the LGBTQ+ community.
You are so right to include stop sewing when you're tired!!

Awe! Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks great advice

So true about not needing all the extra stitch options on a machine! Thanks for the info
Any time!!! thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!

In 1979 my grandma bought me a new Kenmore for my 10th birthday.....I still use it exclusively... no bells or whistles but it is a workhorse!
YES! If I ever get my hands on an old workhorse, I’m going to totally not let it go!
Visit thrift stores, I got a second Kenmore sewing machine for 15.00dollars

"Your sleeve becomes a neck hole after midnight"... I'm dying. This is so true.
I’m serious…hahahahha!!
You’re so cute! I was also 5 or 6 when I started. We made our patterns out of brown paper grocery bags! YES to Barbie clothes!!
YAAAAY! I love it!! I was just making some barbie clothes last week for my little one.
Ny, you're an excellent teacher. You made me laugh and I learned. Keep up the great work. I'm a fan.

I love your videos and your energy. I agree about the iron, but even with an iron the expensive ones are not always the best.
Yes, I think often it’s about finding a GOOD quality iron. I have found that research is my best bet! Thanks for watching Sharon!!!! You bring me cheer!
This was fabulous and I am going to share it with my crafting group

I wish I had realized that I really only need a straight stitch and an occasional zigzag. I would have saved a fortune on the machine i bought will all the bells and whistles that i dont use.
I used to work at Joann fabrics and every single time someone bought a new sewing machine, they would comment that I wish I had kept my old machine.
Thanks for sharing....wish I knew to take a break, wish I knew I didn't have to buy patterns at full price....didn't know about the sales back then.
Oh my goodness! The COST of a pattern sometimes. GRIEF! that’s a good thing to know!
@@azaleasmom1 I know.....and I would buy patterns for my niece too....full price.....🤦🏾♀️

Oh gosh! I can’t!!! Your poor poor fingers!!!!!! I hope they are better and back to sewing now! (but not themselves…)
I spent more on my sewing machine for features and I only use like 2 or 3 stitches. 🥴🤣🤣
Never fails. It’s almost inevitable foe some of us, I mean we are so excited when e get started right???
I do love PDF patterns lol
Ny, I’m a beginner sewist so I thoroughly enjoy each and every video you make. You have taught me so much! I appreciate your hard work and effort. It is noticed and valued. Thank you! ❤️🧵

@@azaleasmom1 is it free?
@@lindalockhart1266 There are a few free patterns on the website, but most are at a small cost. And they usually have weekly sales. Hope this helps.

Ahh I understand this for sure. XO!
