I wish I had paid more attention when my mom tried to teach me to sew with a sewing machine! After she passed I started sewing by hand, and 20 years later I am still sewing by hand! Really slow but I really enjoy it... its fun and inclusive... so many people sew these days, I love to see their creations!:-)
If I like a pattern I line it with interfacing, and my seam ripper is my friend. I used to buy seam rippers and hem gauges almost every year for stocking stuffers for my mom
I learned to sew when I was little from my Grandmother, one day she showed me how to put in a sleeve and I thought in my head you've got to be kidding me, so what I wish I knew is that you can sew the sleeve and sides all in one swoosh and you don't have to set in a sleeve. !!!!!!!!!!!
A little late to this but just wanted to jump in on one of your subscriber's comments about having more than one project on the go. I find that when I inevitably reach a sticking point with a project, I set it aside and work on something else. By the time I come back to the original project, my emotions have levelled out and I'm not as frustrated, and sometimes I just figure out how to do it. It's like your brain 'looks away' from the problem for a bit, and then when it looks back, it can suddenly see what the problem is.
Thanks for this! I like all the tips about embracing mistakes and not working on a project when you are tired. I quit sewing for many years because I just got frustrated. But now I am back at it with a very different perspective. I'm more focused on creativity and upcycling and no longer think I need a store bought pattern to make something.
It’s not just computerized machines that can do auto button holes! I have a special foot that you put the button in, and a piece you pull down, and it works perfectly!
My mum used to occasionally make me clothes. Big problem was she would never measure me again the pattern pieces. It's a big problem when the darts in the chest area sit halfway up your boobs instead of at the bottom of them. I'm a little taller than you. Oh, and sleeves were always too short. I can't tell you how many sweaters of mine, which mum made, had inserts of 3-4 inches. They stood out badly, even when in the same fabric. On the upside, this taught me what not to do.
I hear ironing is really important for sewing. What do you use please? I just bought a few McCall's patterns (from watching your thrift flip challenge with Littletoh) and I have a better understanding now of how useful an iron is. Do you suggestions? Thank you!!
@@MaddieLynn thanks for taking the time to do these videos with your busy schedule I just looked at your pajama pants video I filed it step-by-step and made a pair
Love this!! Definitely adding it to the list, but in the meantime checkout Lauren Johnson on RUclips because she has a few videos like this for cute projects💕

I learned that measuring inseam, waist, hip, shoulders etc before hand save a lot of time

Great to know! That’s how my machine is set up too, so I’m glad machines without the screens work the same way :)
Can you make a video of beginner tool kits for sewing, please 🙏🏽
Yes!! That’s been on my list and I’ll definitely be putting it out in the fall💕

Oh my goodness!!! That’s horrible, but also definitely teaches you how to fix garments to make them fit correctly ☺️
