    I'd like to add one note of caution when using the silicone form - if you need an exact size top, make sure you add the width of the form to the dimensions of your box. I made tops for a brick BBQ and wanted a 1/2" over-hang. luckily I realized my mistake while mounting the form and was able to rebuild the boxes to compensate for the form. Thanks again!

      The fire pit should have a space between the flame and the surface. Most will probably be fine. Make sure it's outdoor rated. If your flame is at an odd angle to the concrete, there are marketed sealers that claim to be excellent even for fireplaces.

    Did you spray it with water for an hour like you do the mortar mix? Or does the water depend on the temperature and materials used?

    • @raffikkiz
      @raffikkiz 2 года назад

      Depends on the temp and material. Mostly, it is good practice to rehydrate your concrete surface when it is hot or exposed to intense heat/sun. If you have it in a shed and it's below 90 you'll probably be fine. Spraying the surface with water is always good practice though as it gives the concrete the best shot at curing without a crazy amount of cracking. Do not saturate the surface if the concrete is still naturally wet though.

    @sackclothandashes1342 Год назад

    The point of plasticizer is to reduce the water content to avoid cracks and other defects. So of you use super p you need to reduce your water content. Your mix is way too watery.

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  Год назад

      Not true with the Rapid Set product

    • @sackclothandashes1342
      @sackclothandashes1342 Год назад

      @Michael Builds plasticizer only has one purpose, that is to maintain a higher slump while reducing water content. Increased water content results in cracks, crazing and spawling. That is the nature of concrete.

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  Год назад

      @@sackclothandashes1342 I understand that. But Rapid Set has taken that same old idea and gone further with it. The ability of both their concrete materials and their plasticizers go beyond the abilities of the regular materials that you’re used to. All of your facts and knowledge are 100% correct for regular Portland based concrete and typical plasticizers. But this is not a Portland base and this is not a typical plasticizer. Rapid Set is made with a CSA (Calcium Sulfoaluminate) base. The strength is 3 times stronger and 3 time faster than any concrete you can get on the shelf. I mix according to the manufacturer recommendations and my projects have all stood the test of time and Ive never had any issues. There is not too much water in my mix.

    2 things, 1) way too wet with that flow control. You notice as you poured it from the bucket the aggregate had already settled in the bucket., which means there is a pile of agg in the middle of the table and none at the edges.
    2) a mag float is a finishing tool, depending on what kind of finish you want. Use a mag float (not a finishing trowel) until the concrete has set up enough to take a trowel finish, (usually after a couple hours for non-rapid setting concrete). A finishing trowel is a final finish tool, not early or intermediary.

    As a Milwaukee tool guy, I have no doubt that it will mix up a bucket of mortar. But why not use a corded drill? I don't needlessly run them that hard unless I have to.
    Also a palm sander works wonders for getting the air bubbles out if the mix once poured.
    And concrete will freeze even though it's set up in the cold. The water is still in the mix and will continue to get stronger over time. When it's that cold it will eventually cool down and freeze. It needs to be at least covered and not placed over frozen ground, heated if possible even.

    Can’t tell you how much I’ve learned about concrete from your videos. Thank you so much for these informative gems! A question: can you color mortar mix? Trying to plan for a “mosaic” project using terrazzo glass on a previously laid concrete (Quikcrete) base. Also, do you use acrylic fortifier when you embed the glass or overlay on older concrete?

    Just discovered your site! Also impressed with Cajun country dry pour technique. LOVE you did a test of water penetration! 40 year Gen Contractor here, recently widowed💔💔now doing everything by myself - so your site is truly an inspiration! Thank you a bunch - been wanting to do concrete countertops in our barndominium in very rural Colorado. Eager to try this!

    What you called a “star pattern” is very important when you’re forming the inside of a block-out and are pouring concrete on the outside of it.
    If you don’t form it in that “star pattern”, the two longer sides won’t hardly come out. (ESPECIALLY IF IT IS 2X LUMBER.)
    We used to call it “pig penning”.
