    I do polished concrete for a living and I can tell you when it comes to polishing by hand, slower is faster. Start with a 50 grit pad at very low speed on the grinder working in tight slow circles and gradually increase speed as you move up in grit.
    Also to explain how polishing works,
    50-grind
    100 continues grind and starts honing
    200-400 continues hone
    800 and above polish.
    For even better clarity use a concrete densifier after honing with 100 grit pad.
    And if you finish with a buffing/ burnishing pad, that slab of concrete will turn it a mirror
    Hope this helps anyone looking into starting a polished concrete project

      When it comes to polishing fireglass in concrete, like in Michaels video. Is it the same as regular glass? I am wondering If I could use glass beer bottles to get some clear and brown glass colors in my countertop build. Has anyone tried that? Do you think it would work?

    • @miloszivkovic6922
      @miloszivkovic6922 2 года назад

      Yes, its important to realise how important honing is, it gives that wet dull worn out look.

    • @Zoomy222
      @Zoomy222 2 года назад +3

      @TheReal HankTrill I have heard going above 400 grit will reduce the pours so small it cannot accept any sealer. Do you find this to be true?

    • @therealhanktrill570
      @therealhanktrill570 2 года назад +1

      @@Zoomy222 it depends on the sealer. Water based sealers can typically still be accepted depending on the viscosity. The better option is to use a stain guard. Most concrete stain guards require two applications. Burnishing after the stain guard has cured can enhance the gloss of the concrete as well. Stain guards don’t protect against acidic liquids though (vinegars, harsh cleaning products etc) so I wouldn’t recommend using stain guards for concrete countertops/ sinks

    One way I've seen to fix the position of your mosaic is to arrange your tiles/glass bits, and then take a piece of clear adhesive shelf paper and burnish it onto the tesserae. Then you flip the whole business and position it at the bottom of the mold (some people use a mold release). After you demold, you just peel off the shelf paper. Anyway, beautiful job on your polished counter. Thanks for posting the video!

    I TOTALLY ENJOYED THIS VIDEO!!! LOL! I've not watched a RUclips video that I've enjoyed as much as this one! This is such a brilliant idea! It gets me brain popping all over the place on what I can do! I was thinking about what kind of counter I wanted to build for my mini bar in my parlour room by my cook wood stove... and this idea totally resinates with me. I love glass and will be finishing a wall in the room with fretting and stain glass windows to the indoor garden room beside it. I have ideas... it just never ends! I could totally relate to your excitement about the polished top and what was accomplished. I was waiting for you to hug it... a bit of a disappointment I didn't see that. I however, would have hugged it. I love stone.. that's my true love... and I had to opportunity to hug a castle. I'm just saying... hugs are important, because it satisfies the soul. Hahaha! and that proud moment of sharing your top with the gang at the hardware store... LOL. I would have done the same thing. The people at the hardware and lumber store are always fascinated on my building experiences... after all, I did build a harp. Now, I'm renovating my entrance to look like a castle... to go with my harp. LOL! And so much more is yet to happen... I will be tuning into your channel again and again!

    Just as a fyi.. wet sanding makes your abrasive last a lot longer, and will ultimately give a better finish as the dust doesn't accumulate in the same spots allowing it to not swirl around and cause scratches, pits, etc

    Nice to see a new video. No judgment on using the tape but in my 30 years in construction I found electrical tape to be the best for taping vacuum hose to tool. Seals better than masking tape and no residue like duct tape. Also I'll bet a guy could rig up a garden hose attachment to the dust shroud if he was going to wet grind.
    As always, cool tutorial 😎

The reason for wet polishing is to keep the pads cool which equals a longer life for them. I didn't make a pattern/logo though - You one upped me!!!! But it was just so smooooothhhhh!

    A great addition to your workshop is the "Router Speed Control Dial" from Harbor Freight. On some types of motors, it can be used to adjust speed of a "router" or really any electric motor of a certain variety. I think it should work on your grinder to lower the RPM too!

    I polished quartzite edges on my pool coping starting with a diamond cup to 3000. I found using water prevents those pads from burning up. Oh and I too got a Bosch variable speed grinder.
