This video shows how to make a DIY concrete coffee table top look like marble. The top is made using Fishstone’s glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) ready-made concrete mix, which is pre-cast in a melamine form. I separated out batches of different colored concrete (from white to dark grey), mixed them together in the form, and then swirled them together by hand to get the marble-like appearance.
I also use an ancient Japanese technique called “Shou Sugi Ban” to make the base for the coffee table. I used a modernized version of shou sugi ban, employing a propane torch to char the outside of the wood. The charred wood is natural way of protecting the rest of the wood, and when finished with a penetrating oil, such as Danish oil, provides a durable surface. This technique works well on any open-grained wood, such as Douglas fir, pine, and cedar. I used inexpensive 4x4 Douglas fir lumber from my local big box store.

This table arrived well packaged and on time. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!
As someone who has worked a lot with concrete and plaster, I kept thinking "Wow, he is really overworking that concrete if he wants to get a marbleized look"! Well I gotta tell you... your finished product is GORGEOUS! It came out really beautiful with a very organic look! The base is beautiful as well... Love it!
I really love the cloudy-gray/black contrast. If a thunderstorm was a table!!! Great job.
i really want to make a concrete table and after watching a bunch of videos your method for getting the silicon perfectly into the corners with minimal mess and easy cleanup is by far the best.
I love this table!! My boyfriend and I are finally moving into a place we renovated and I'm totally getting him to make this table for our kitchen.
Thanks much! Would love to see what you make...tag me on Instagram (@modustrialmaker ) if you share pics
How did it turn out?
Looks sweet! 😍 love the alligator charred shou sugi ban method and the “marble” or “cloudy” effect goes beautifully with it. Thanks for sharing your process & almost mishaps. Awesome build as always.
+Janie Gonzalez thanks Janie! Glad you enjoyed it.
Love all of this - glad it worked out so well for you. Thank you for taking the time to explain it so well.
It looks great, the color mix added natural looking depth to the top.
Thanks much!
Mike, you did a great job with this projects and the explanations. That top looks amazing.
+DIY Creators thanks! Can't wait to see what you come up with once you get your hands on some gfrc....

Very impressed with how that turned out! Love the burnt wood
thanks much!
I keep coming back to this video every so often and get equally amazed by the reveal!!! ..... Just about the best marble look on the whole platform concerning concrete that isn't using epoxy...... Awesome project.... That base is nothing to wag a finger at either...
Thank you!
That’s a great project. The clouds effect really stands out. Sweet! Great job!
Thanks much!
Hey my man, this is an awesome vid! I've been toying with the idea of doing concrete counter tops for my house remodel, and this is by far the coolest style I've seen out there. I've watched a fair amount of different videos for concrete counter tops to get an idea for the different kind of looks I can go for and this is the only one I've seen with the "marble cloud" look. I dig it. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work!
Thanks much! Would love to see pics on the countertops when your make them
2017: The wood was pretty cheap, it only cost me $30
2021: Had to sell my car to afford the wood for the table legs
@Daniel Doyle Not on everything but on lumbar especially it’s really bad. The amount of money you would spend (on lumbar) to build 10 houses pre pandemic, would now only build 2 and a half houses :(
Turned out impressive! Thanks for sharing the techniques, particularly the Japanese wood burning.
I think it looks great. Instead of marble-look you got a cloud-ink-look, which is just as lovely. I would love to see the cloud-ink style as an outdoor garden coffee table in terracotta and cream or terracotta and beige. The alligator skin base was so sophisticated! Like seriously that’s some vogue magazine style!
Man, you do some amazing work! Beautiful...
DrZzs Very kind words...thank you!
T
“The lumber was relatively inexpensive” * sees this video was made 3 years ago * ah that explains that
This comment is so underrated .
Nowadays it is cheaper to make a table of gold.
😊
That table looks amazing, I like everything about it.
Thanks much!
At the end a cool looking table. You can call it cloudy table! Thx for the video
The top looks really good, and I am in love with the shou sugi ban base! I am going to come up with a project where I can try it out myself. Awesome video!
Thanks much! Looking forward to see what you come up with! Shou Sugi Ban is addictive. I'm already planning some more projects that employ it. I really want to try one of the variants where you apply a blue or green dye to the wood after burning it, to get the blue/green and black grain patterns.
I hadn't seen the dyed versions, but I just looked it up...WOW! Its insane! I can't wait to see that.
Yea, they are super cool, right?
🤣🤣
Why not ebonize the wood with iron acetate?
Really inspiring and giving video. I learned som great stuff here! Thank for sharing this! 🇸🇪
thanks! glad you found it useful.
Modustrial Maker how did you end up fastening the concrete to the wood?
I just relied on the weight of the concrete. But, construction adhesive works well if you want to attach it permanently
Absolutely brilliant! Great video, great narration and amazing finished piece! I’m diggin it!
Thanks Chuck!
I have watched this video like 100 times over the years because I want to do something like this for the house. I think it would be interesting in your current house build if you do some cool countertops like this so we can see the master make his own unique concrete countertops.
Looks awesome. Nice work
+z dubs thanks much!
Love the marblezation! As I learned in another DIY post, you can also affix bolts in the wet concrete to secure to the base.
Thanks! And yeah, that's an option too.
I'm selfishly glad it turned out cloudy. It looked really cool, and I want to do something similar now. Thanks!
Thanks! would love to see what you make. Tag me on instagram if you share (@modustrialmaker)
Definitley Gonna give this one a try
Very cool mate, concrete tops seem quite the rage, I’m keen to try that burnishing look myself but as it’s summer here I’ll wait a while lol
Thanks! Would love to see what you make when it cools off in the Southern hemisphere....if you share pics, definitely email them to me or tag me on instagram (@modustrialmaker).
Sweet looking table! I do see one issue, When using lag bolts like that you should have a washer as well. This will distribute the load at the head more evenly and prevent the wood from splitting.
Thanks! A washer would be a good idea
Amazing way to use the brain to create things for the good. Congratulations!
Kale Mercer
Good
Thanks!
Thanks man! My father and I just finished our own version. It’s not perfect, but it looks awesome and we had a blast making it. Heavily inspired by your wooden base. Thanks again for all the cool tips. Those cake icing metal ball tools are awesome ;)
That's so cool! Did you share pics on IG or anywhere else?
Looks really nice. Love the technique on the legs, I think it matches the "cloudy" concrete very well.
Thanks much for the kind words!
Great job on the table, it looks Awesome.
Thanks much!
Here is the translation from Russian into English 1) concrete must be vibrated after pouring. So bubbles come out of it and the mixture is compacted. Heavier dyes are also more suitable for the front side of the countertop.
2) instead of insulation, put any wooden sheet. So the tabletop can be screwed to the base.
3) after removing the form, you need to grind the countertop on the front side. This will reveal the beauty of the filler and the table will have a finished look.
4) after firing the base, it must be ground. Because burnt pieces of wood stick very poorly to it.
But the table was not bad and the work was done incredible !!! Thank you for the video!
Robin Stone спасибо большое!!!
Dude, awesome job! I love the way the finished table turned out it is absolutely amazing! Hands down one of the best looking concrete tables I've seen!
Thank you!
Surprisingly, there aren't that many good tutorials out there for this sort of exercise, thank you.
Thank you, glad you found it useful!
I love it brother!!!!!!! I do rammed earth so I'm accustomed forms. Peace
Thanks Daxx!
it looks like watery paints starting to blend together. i love it. it may not look like marble but it still looks great.
Thanks! Yea, all in all, I was happy how it turned out.
I always enjoy watching you doing what we all dream of doing....great job Mike
Thanks brother!
Why do some people always panic during a poor, 😅? You saved it though and it turned out awesome! I was debating about a wood epoxy table, but hell man im a mason. Youve just helped finalize my decision. 😊
Which concrete look do you prefer, the "marble" look or the pure white in my past videos? Comment and let me know!
I love the uniqueness of the cloudy/marble look, but the white has a clean aesthetic that's impossible to hate. I'd love to give this a shot. Haven't made the leap to working with concrete yet, but this just convinced me! Another great video!
Thanks! Would love to see what you make once it is done!
This marble look is really awesome. It fits with the color scheme of my house and I think may try it when I finally get around to making my wife's nightstand.
+Brian Easly thanks! Would love to see what you make. Email me or tag me on Instagram if you share pictures.
I like both, really. But in my own home I would probably want the white stuff.
I think that looks better than marble. Is a unique pattern, you should make more of this, try different things and colors.
And I just subscribed for more cool stuff
Thank you! Keep an eye out for the collaboration I'm doing with Jonny Builds....we are giving the marble another shot this weekend!
Modustrial Maker Nice :D
Few years later, and this stuff is still cool :)
Dude this is beautiful. That foam "mistake" made this project a pleasure to gaze at.
Thanks Kisha!
i'll be doing something like this, use it as a welding table
Your next one you can use hemp fabric soaked in Acrylic monomer,
Just 0.250" is Incredibly Strong,
0.750" nearly Unbelievable.
Nice Job, Keep Trying Something New, .!
You can smear a few dabs of silicone in the mold, still keeps the glass smooth look just really looks like actually distressed stone when cast

That cloudy look is dope!
Thanks!
OMG! I love this table!
Thanks! :)
It ended up looking more like a metallic concrete :D
Great presentation and result - I like it! Have you ever worked with AirCrete? After seeing the difficulty you had with the foam board, I'm thinking that a thin base of concrete poured for the top (as in the video), followed by a thicker slab of AirCrete would do the trick nicely and give you the weight savings you're looking for.
I hadn't heard of Aircrete, but it looks interesting. It seems like the tools needed to make it are fairly specialized though, but it is intriguing none-the-less.
Another solution (which is probably what I should have done is to build a 2x4 bridge over the form that you attach midway through the pour....sorta what I did in panic, except that with the bridge you would have support pieces outside the form instead of drilling into the sides of the form itself (this risks blowing out the melamine, but I got lucky and that didn't happen). My video for the GFRC coat rack shows the bridge technique applied to embed a french cleat in a GFRC tile, if interested.
There are ways of doing AirCrete on the cheap. After all, it's only cement mixed in the correct proportion with frothed soap bubbles or a foaming agent. It's super strong, lightweight (it floats) and seems like a perfect solution for cement/concrete furniture projects if weight reduction without sacrificing strength is an imperative.
I like that GFRC coat rack project; very creative. With so many angles and geometric shapes in play on the racks, I'm wondering if gluing larger diameter marbles to the pipe ends would enhance it by lending some round/spherical accenting. Also, it would seemingly prevent any damage caused by the pipe ends to coats or fabrics. Sorry, I don't mean to armchair quarterback your designs. Your creativity is contagious. SUBSCRIBED!
The marbles idea is cool! I don't think its armchair quarterbacking....it is just being creative. I am the same way. The minute I see something I like, I'm immediately asking myself how I could make it even better. It is actually a compliment...the more something inspires me, the more ideas I have to build from it.
I'll have to look into the Aircrete. I think you'd have to do some tests to figure out how it bonds with GFRC, but there is definitely some room for exploration with it.
Mike, I just found this vid on an easy to assemble, easy on the wallet, DIY Aircrete foam machine: ruclips.net/video/aSLJCPR1Prw/видео.html
+tswrench cool, I will check it out, probably when it warms up here a bit so I can do it outside
Beautiful, I really want to get into making concrete tops myself and love learning new things. Just had my 24x50 shop built and maybe one day can start making content myself since I have been making custom furniture now for over three years. I incorporate metal and wood but I want to add some concrete creations myself.
THAT LOOKS INCREDIBLE
That shit is BOSS!!!! Great work!
Thanks much!
I don't like it, I love it! For the wooden base, do you think you could have achieved a quite similar effect just with a dark varnish?
+Βιολογικά Προϊόντα thanks! You could get a similar color with an ebony stain, but could not get the texture you can get with shou sugi ban.
Just a question, is it right to use glue and screws when using Japanese woodworking??
Turned out great! I've been wanting to try something with concrete, this is some good inspiration.
Thanks much! Let me know if you want any tips for your project. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you come up with! Btw, I'm going to share something with you on IG from before I started filming for YT -- with your stacked plywood skills, i think it might give you some ideas that could take what I made to the next level.
Man that's a really good high end look.
Great job.
Thanks Greg!
I use a 3/4" plywood with screws goong into the concrete and have it imbedded. Soni can screw a base to the table
Awesome idea on 3/4 ply!!!! I will def incorporate that with my kitchen island/cart project
Четко, заебись! Умеете! Могёте!👍
That thing looks amazing 😍
Thanks!
That looks awesome. Watching these makes me want to learn how to do all this.
You should! It isn't too difficult, and is very addicting :)
После обжига, надо было пройти насадкой на дрель с металлической счеткой.
Тогда бы у дерева получилась великолепная структура
точно. конечно надо было бы чем-то содрать часть гари.
Definitely a neat idea. Looks good. I especially like the burnt wood look
Thanks much!
That looks awesome!
Love your proyect , the base on the table is awesome .👍
Thanks Abel!
That's awesome man
+Aidan Craig thanks!!
Just stumbled across your channel. Glad I did. This is amazing. I'm inspired to start learning about using concrete in my projects now.
Thanks! Would love to see what you create. Tag me on Instagram (@modustrialmaker) if you share pics
This is beautiful !!! OMGosh I want one
Thank you!
HOLY COW!!!!I have never seen anything like this! Great Job!!!
Thanks! The outcome was somewhat of a happy mistake :)
Great vid with verbal and written intructions!
Thanks!
Super awesome, thanks!
Great job, been following you since your first vid and you keep getting better!
Thanks much!
I know I’m late to the post but this came out beautiful, I’m definitely saving it to my playlist and hopefullly I could build this one day.
Thank you!
That looks just awesome buddy! Thx for a great video.
Thanks!
Simply Amazing!
thank you!
This piece of work is just stunning. who would think that concrete could be a luxury
Thank you!
Thanks. Turned out pretty well considering your foam issue. Still looks good.
Great job! I'm a union concrete carpenter (p3 apprentice) and I'm very much interested in getting into custom furniture and concrete related renovations. So this was a great video to get inspired for what I want to do...
Glad to hear! Inspiration is the goal -- would love to see what you make, and let me know if you have questions along the way. I'm far from an expert, but have learned a decent amount through my projects for the channel and am happy to share whatever knowledge I can.
Great job, well explained. Thanks.
Thanks Alex!
This is why i love concrete. Very versatile. Great video. I was looking for countertop ideas and this was the best one.
Thanks! I'll actually have another video out with a slightly different concrete marbling technique next week, so stay tuned :)
Modustrial Maker Im in the process starting a Kombucha brewery/Tavern in Cincinnati. Im positive from what ive seen that if I have tables like this in the tap room, that Ill be set apart. I like that from a visual standpoint you balanced the wood and concrete. It feels more hospitable.
So cool! Do you have an Instagram for the tavern so I can follow along as it is built out?
Awesome work there, love it!
Thank you!
This is awesome, I just wish you'd included more shots of the finished product for us to appreciate.
thanks Jesus!

Thanks much!
I've been toying with the idea of concrete countertops in my kitchen. This is the technique I will use. It's really a beaut! Thanks!
Thanks! Let me know if you need pointers along the way, and I'd love to see what you end up making. If you share pictures, tag me on Instagram (@modustrialmaker).
BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you!
This is great!!!! Exactly what I’m looking for!!
Thanks!
Modustrial Maker I’ve only done epoxy. But want to get into concrete since it’s more eco friendly and less expensive.
This looks amazing
Thank you!
Looks like a stormy sky and that is awesome
Thanks!
cool vid great job, thanks for sharing the unintended element... that is how it often goes, and you just work it.
Thanks Vance!
That came out great
Thank you!
Great production. I had not seen the insulation before. Smart idea.
Thanks!
Even your accidents are amazing. Great work.
Very Beautiful Table. Maybe using different size dowels to swirl the colors would help you get the look you want to achieve a little easier. I really love the fact that each creation with this technique will be completely unique.
Amazing way of making it different...
Thank you!
I don't know why I waited so long to watch this video...GREAT PROJECT!
You and everyone else, most likely the thumbnail....I'm going to send you a pic on IG of what happened when I changed the TN on April 4th....
Turned out beautiful
Thank you!
Awesome transformation. Also, impressive to look at.
Thanks Leif!
This is amazing!!! 👍🏼
Thank you!
Really classy job. One of a kind
It looks lovely , good job
