DIY Concrete Coffee Table | "Urban Decay" Table

- This week I'll show you how to make a DIY concrete coffee table with a waterfall edge that features an "urban decay" deconstructed void that I chiseled into the concrete. This void exposes the rebar frame that gives this DIY concrete coffee table its apocalyptic vibe. I made this table in Joshua Tree CA last October while at the Makesgiving event put on by Ben Uyeda from Homemade Modern, Jessie Uyeda from ijessup, and Mike Montgomery from Modern Builds. I used Quikrete 5000, and this is my first concrete project of this size. Ben Uyeda was a big help on this coffee table and he has a whole catalog of great concrete projects on his channel. I was also assisted by Mike from Modustrial Maker, Eric from Cut Werx, Chris Salomone from Foureyes Furniture, and Mike from Modern Builds. Thanks for watching this DIY "urban decay" concrete coffee table.

This is literally, EXACTLY, what I was looking for. Been trying to figure out how to incorporate more decay looks into a room I'm decorating.
Those rebar bends are SO clean 👌🏼👌🏼
Thanks brother 🙏
That is such a cool look! I could totally see a loft apartment created with a bunch of pieces like this. Makesgiving looked like such a good time!
Makesgiving was a blast!
I was relieved when you got the chisel out. Looks great.
One word ....AMAZING , the idea as well as the finish.
It does look like a found piece of something. It is pretty sweet!!
Thanks!
This table arrived well packaged and on time. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!
Seems like everything went just about like you expected. I know that’s not always the case with projects and concrete projects for sure. The table turned out cool!
An all rebar table with a glass top would look good too.
Makesgiving!
Yessss Definitely!
I love this table. It’s very unique.
That looks amazing. I love the idea of adding the rebar!
Thanks
What a terrific video. The table design is lovely, but I also learned a ton of great tricks, from using insulation, to drilling and chiseling around the rebar, to using construction adhesive for affixing a leg to concrete, to using paint buckets (etc) as weights/clamps. Thank you so much for sharing your process!!
🙏🙏
That's just awesome. I'd love to have something like this. I wonder if there is a way to do a table or something else in similar style but where you could utilize the hole. E.g. you could access some storage space or something.
Wow your famous
this is the kind of modern art I like
This is a very cool design. Makesgiving looks like it was a fun event
Wow how awesome it turned out 🤪Thank you for sharing 🥰🤗
Great build, awesome B roll at the end...
This is amazing, I love it
Love it, perfect look and strong enough to hold the coffee LOL
Gotta respect you for doing many creative ideas through the years, even though I only know you using wood since finding until now.
This is soo cool! It looks like it’s from an apocalypse!!
This turned out so cool!
Looks fantastic Jonny! 😍👌🏻 Awesome work! 👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks brother!
Beautiful. Makesgiving!
What a great project. I’m thinking about doing this and filling the void with an epoxy pour to give you the usable table space and still have the amazing design aspect! Love your videos.
Ya I though that too. Pure concrete is rough and not practical. I would suggest a complete cover of epoxy on top so that it is smooth and you don't get broken pieces that come afterwards with concrete.
I thought of placing a sheet of glass on top.
Allen Tegarden are you progressing this idea? I’d like to do the same. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That’s a smart idea Allen Tegarden! That’d be really cool to see
I was enjoying watching this video thinking some dickhead is gonna suggest using some epoxy, I was right.
10/10 wow 💕 Thanks for sharing
This is absolutely sick
Thanks!
That's so cool love it.
that's awesome!
Makesgiving! Nice job!
crazy idea, imagine if you made this but with brass rebar that after the fact you polished or polished the regular rebar and painted it gold. Would be a crazy wabi sabi vibe.
Awesome table!
makesgiving! Very nice job!
love it! want it!
I'm about to make this !!! Lol thank you
Awesome!
Makesgiving 🤙
Very interesting design!!
Makesgiving
Very cool!
Very artistic! I really like it
the whole falling apart decaying thing isnt my exactly my cup of tea but i must admit that is a very neat project and i commend for thinking outside the box
Very cool. Oh makesgiving.
Looks awesome! Makesgiving!
The best part of Makesgiving was the 4 days just prior! 😉
Great job
Great stuff Jonny!
Thanks brother!
Nice job!
This was like the Avengers assembling but for wood working/metal working on RUclips😂
😂
Beautiful job, dude! Really fantastic result! 😃
Just a tip... In case the metal bars start to get rusty, scrub it with steel wool and apply a thin layer of ferrox. Try with anything else first to see the result, the metal gets a black protective layer. 😉
Rust will add to the look.
Good advice, but I agree with @pagemonster on this one. If it rusts it will look even better imo. Thanks for watching!
Makesgiving!
Thanks for the help on this one!
Just an idea for you what I use for a concrete vibrator is my multi tool welded a 3/4 inch nut to an old blade and got a length of threaded steel bar that screws into the nut drill and tap a small hole in the nut so the bar can’t virbrate loose while being used and cut multiple lengths as needed for different projects
Your the Goat
I saw this on Facebook marketplace
That would look epic in a modern home
Agreed. Wish I could've flown home with it, but it weighs 200lbs, haha.
dang! very nice but i somehow thought you're going fill the void with some clear epoxy :)
If you ever do something like that again don't wait so long for the leg. It creates a cold joint. Max time you want to wait with concrete that stiff is 30min. The cold joint makes it considerably weaker to longitude stress. Love how it looks though!
(I worked in concrete for awhile, just giving my 2¢)
Очень круто )
Hi, I poured myself a little table like this. I've been waiting for it to dry for 2 days, I'm going to sand it on it tomorrow, but I wanted to ask if I should put on a varnish like a yacht varnish or polish to make it look shiny in the sob floor and provide protection.
Pretty epic! Just be careful where you set your coffee down.
The "spilled" coffee table
Wow, nice work, how much do you think this coffee table weighs?
Makesgiving 👍
You officially win favourite birthday video 2020🏴
Absolutely stunning work sir
Acetone will dissolve the styrene on the edges as well. I might have sandwiched the rebar in foam to avoid the extra work of chiseling out the rebar. same torch to heat the steel and press the foam in place.
How do you adjust the leg for a crappy floor?
1:32 haha he labeled the ant
I think it looks amazing, personally I think it would look better with some graffiti on it maybe running off the edge as if it was cut from a building
Graffiti was considered, but I left it off so I didn't over complicate the build. That said I think if would be super cool painted up by a true graffiti artist.
You could also patina the exposed rebar to make it look rusted...
The wax that you apply on
The concrete slab. Is it the
Wax that you use to treat
The leather?
I may have missed it, but why did you wait to form the "leg" after the top had set a bit?
Pour clear epoxy to that hole and its awsome even more
Maybe adding resin where the rebar is?
What wax where you using?
Do you need the wire for support or not?
Makesgiving :-)
According to your clip, how thick is the concrete top?
You should do that in 1 pour. You will 100% get a crack where they are joined
You had a Duluth sponsorship recently. Did they not have some full length jeans to replace those daisy dukes?
But then you'll have no reason to watch!
Approximately how much does this table weigh?
So........ It's a perfectly good coffee table with a giant hole in it?
Did I read and hear "waterfall" somewhere?
Looks nice. However I think I would’ve roughed up the top and edges to complete the post apocalyptic look to it. Idk just doesn’t seem finished... don’t get me wrong. It’s a stunning coffee table it truly is. That’s just my two cents is all.
Креативненько
How much did it weigh ?
Makesgiving
I wish you cut the foam somewhere you could vacuum up the waste..... those bits will eventually become part of the pacific garbage patch, no?
i wouldve filled the void with clear resin to give it the usability back tbh
Oof. I cringed at the big sds bit going through concrete with rebar. That's an expensive bit to replace.
Also now you have to get a 3d printing pen to "fix" the hole
шик))
Hey
Mate's gibbon
Fill it with epoxy!
Nice project but due to the opening you lost some space on the table to put thinks on. Why no closing the openings with cristal clear resin. So the character of the table would be preserved and i think it must be awesom to see a mug floating over the opening... Sorry Mr. Tegarden said it before..
Use the soil, and you won't have to tear down the middle.
1:30 HE TAGGED THE ANT WTF
makesgiving
Or find a chunk of sidewalk they are landfilling and repurpose it...
there is a big hole in the table... i propose you to reforme a litle bit and add a transparant epoxy
Wow awesome work but don't put that table at any architect's office😂
Really love all the amazing woodworking and concreate building videos from the states, but i keep seeing people cutting up all sorts of foam and platic outdoor with no means to collect all those small pieces flying around :( nice build though.
It would have even cooler if the corner had the cement curve over instead of the sharp right angle, but how does someone go about doing it? 🤔
you put the curve in the formwork
Cool. But why don't you just double up the styrofoam with the rebars between...? And viola!!! Almost no concrete to remove....
Please fill epoxy in the blank portion .....it's look like good
I thought he'd pour resin to cover the hole and then polish it
