Today on Modern Builds I'm trying a method of DIY Kintsugi using a round concrete table top and gold lead / adhesive. This was my attempt at salvaging what would've been a huge failure and I couldn't be happier with how it came out. If course this isn't 'proper kinsugi' but it was fun and a good learning experience. This table arrived well packaged and on time. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!
This might be one of my favorite projects you've ever done. There's beauty everywhere... even in the mistakes we make.
Tracey Sims wow!! Thank you 😁😁
I totally agree.
Tracey Sims I liked the saying as if you said poetry; there’s beauty everywhere.. even in the mistakes we make 🌹
Kintsugi is more than just art but a Japanese philosophy on accepting your flaws as something that’s beautiful and that adds more value. It’s uniqueness that should be celebrated rather than critiqued. Loved this build and excited to see if you do more projects like this in the future!
What you're describing is upper definition for wabi sabi. Kintsugi is a specific part of wabi sabi, where one sees a repair with a gold alloy as additional value, since someone took their time and effort into making something a whole again
Love that way of thinking. Its beautiful.
Love it!
Rosa Johnson sorry it looks terrible.
We love this!!
Dude I dig your fondant tool hack! and I’ve got a suggestion (food for thought) for your corner caulkings future.
My uncle was a carpenter and found that he combined the fondant tool with dipping it into mineral spirits to create a smoother (no drag) caulk line, but he always wanted a ball that could be free-rolling like a bearing. he found one of those essential oil roller ball containers, and exclusively used it filled with mineral spirit (so the roller was always perfectly clean and never dragged any caulk, just pressed it to the side and moved along, and of course every bit of caulk that was pressed out of the groove wasn’t connected to the inside corner caulk and pulls off perfectly). He’d bragged to everyone in his area that it was the new big thing, but those old fellas don’t know a thing about passing on a clever idea.
Thanks for your beautiful projects, you’re a great inspiration
Joshua Chevalier that is a great idea
post a tutorial??
Also, if you put the caulk down in a thick consistent bead first, then spray with foaming glass cleaner, the caulk will not adhere to the surface except where you already have the bead. This means that any excess won't stick and slides right off.
I usually mask mine regardless to get a perfect edge. Great idea with the ball roller, and mineral spirits.
This is probably my favorite thing you've done to date man. It looks so bad ass.
This was so pleasing to watch. Love that you didn’t trash the whole project and created something immensely gorgeous. This would sell for hundreds if not thousands in stores!!
It is super gorgeous! Just make sure that your seal that gold leaf. It will tarnish and or rub off. IF you want the concrete to stay matte and the gold shiny then just brush sealer onto the leaf.
I think the table breaking the way you had not planned is the perfect mistake that happened to this project, quite beautiful and satisfying to watch..
Awesome that you showed us it doesn't always work out in the beginning! Great video!
You ended up with a top-notch designer piece. Looks so expensive, but better than that, it is a one-of-a-kind piece. So, so cool!
Says don’t spoil end result.
Shows it in thumbnail
I was going to say this lol
lildscrew202 5head
Face palm.
This is proof there are no failures only other opportunities. Seriously like this!
I always taught my students that design is not always about planning every detail.
Not sure who first said it but I always reinforced that 'Design is a conscious decision making process'.
Your project reflected this outlook. You followed a process you had in your head, worked with it, consciously made changes and adapted - that is design. Congrats on a great outcome. (I wonder if adding some depressions/grooves in the wet mix might have helped generate the cracks where you wanted thm.) BB
its great to see that you stayed calm when things went wrong and tried to find a solution before tossing it away and it came out beautifully.
Hey, You need to sealed gold with protective varnish otherwise gold will oxidise after time :)
The right thing to do, I think so, is a coat of epoxy resin and then sand and polish. At least over the cracks if not the whole table.
Gold doesn't oxidise easily, at least not without the help of a strong acid. Only if it's an alloy will it tarnish in air.
Gonçalo Alegria it’s not real gold. I have experience with the stuff, it oxidizes fast and then is just dark sludge.
Thought the same. Plus the whole idea behind kintsugi is to make the cracks ‘seamless’
Yea, I would coat the whole table with a thin layer of epoxy.
This is the best part of DIY woodworking is that when we fail and we all do. It is what you do next that sets you apart. I recently messed up a build and it turned out better then I had planned Haha. This build is definitely one of my most favorite builds of yours so far. Keep up the great work
Cool project, but you may want to put a sealant of some kind on the metal leaf since you didn't use 24k gold. The stuff you used can oxidize.
What kind of sealant would work here and remain clear?
@@CNGarofalo same question!
I just adore how you save this project and nailed it. Not a waste at all.
yoooo this turned out super clean, I kinda want to make this table.
How much could it cost?
Love it! Can't help but point out the philosophy behind kintsugi: kintsukuroi. Essentially, embellishing that something has been broken to commemorate the piece while recognizing it is all the beautiful for having been broken.
This is really beautiful actually! Imagine doing a long entrance way table using that technique. Or even a dining table!!
Gold leaf is so gratifying to work with. I just recently did a woodworking project with it at the Marc Adams school of woodworking. Love the way this table turned out Mike! Way to problem solve. You ended up with a beautiful piece of art!
I’m not a builder at all but I watch these types of videos bc I find them interesting and this is probably the first time I’ve wanted to build something from a video. I wish I was able to so bad 😭😭😭
Happy accidents are sometimes the best part of building stuff. This turned out really cool.
Impeccable form with the jumps to crack.
Dude... You have given me a golden idea for our living room.
Nice build Mike, I love how you're constantly trying new materials!
This piece is absolutely gorgeous. As soon as I saw it come to life as a low-profile table I thought how cool would it look as a trio of "nesting" coffee tables to become even more of a sculptural statement? Great job!!
It might not be as much of a live edge look, but you could use a grinder to cut some relief joints and then hit the concrete and it should break along that. If that makes sense
I love the fact, how you did not took such mistake to heart but turned it into a beautiful piece of art, which in my opinion looks even better! I need to recreate this for my living room ❤️
Bro! This is your most beautiful /creative piece to date.
Can't believe how beautiful it turned out! I would have thrown it all away! Nice perseverance!
Mike this is straight 🔥
THATS freaking gorgeous! Love how you didn’t initially have the intent to use the kintsugi method on this piece which keeps it authentic to the japanese philosophy of wabi sabi.
I have a question: could you have coated the table with a clear kinda finish to protect the gold?
you should.
i paint orthodox cristian icons and use a lot of golden leaves (i use real gold for icons, and cheaper versions for sketches), you should always put a protective layer on the cured gold, because its very easy to scratch of.
@@wapnicawapnica9745 What would you use for that? Clear epoxy? Or is there something better?
Ricardo Melo it’s hard to say, because I’ve never put golden leaves on surfaces that are used so often
I would resin it
I’m fairly certain that kintsugi is more than just the act of repairing things with gold. It’s moreso about the repaired thing being more beautiful than the original thing itself. That tracks for this project. I’d love to try it out with clear resin projects.
Looks awesome! Is the gold fragile when exposed like that? I would be worried that it is going to wear away with use. Maybe some epoxy in the veins would protect it?
How's the cliché saying go...it's not about avoiding mistakes, it's how you fix them (something like that) and this is definitely an amazing example of that! I honestly think this turned out way more interesting than the original concept and hats off to you for sticking with it and not losing your...at least not on camera haha. Really great video Mike!
Epic build, refreshing to see a different approach to filling cracks.
Close to 1M subscribers. I remember subscribing and watching your videos when you had only 20K subscribers. Wooow so proud of you man.
"We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents" as Bob Ross would say :3
That’s probably the best build comeback I have ever seen. The end product is probably way better than the ended piece! 🙌🏼
Bravo my friend! Way to recover a WIN from a near failure! I love how the gold looks in those cracks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
There are only happy accidents! Looks amazing.
Nice but....... you could of atleast painted the plywood under the concrete black to match with the legs . But other than that 10/10
ye, thought the same
Beautiful! I want to make some pieces for my courtyard garden, looks like natural gold veins, lovely!
"So I'm In love with this project, especially considering that it came out of a complete failure"
Where have you been all my life. I simply love what you have done with what could have a disaster outcome to this incredible coffee table. I am inspired and will be getting my crete on over the Christmas Holiday's. Thanks guy. x
Him: I'm no gonna show you he finished project yet
Me: Fast-forwards because idowhatiwant
And that is how you turn a fail into a win. Awesome job Mike!!
Gold leaf is supposed to be applied to the adhesive with a horse tail brush and you should have taken credit for this genius idea, because it is a genius idea.
I’m binge watching these videos and I’m obsessed! I’m an architecture student and I’m really interested in interior and furniture design, I really hope to one day have my own studio. Anyways this channel has been really inspiring thank you 🙏
Hey can we get an update video on your boys clothing store?
D Addison yeah I’m building more stuff for it soon 🤙🏻
Just started m y Ryobi tool kit. I keep watching what tools you use. I love them so far (with my two tools, lol (drill and saw)) Cant wait til I have more tools!! Your videos give me so much inspiration to build things for my new house. Thanks for all your work!
I love that you accepted to promote "Care/of" Yes give detailed information about yourself to a random company that claims will personalize some vitamins, that you have no way to know if they are personalized at all, except for the name of the packaging and the information that they will be able to sell.
Dude, nice build, but be a little more informed, honest, thoughtful and careful when endorsing products. Because, it will or should hurt your channel.
Agree. Also if they're selling something you've never heard of then odds on its not something you need in your diet let alone "a vitamin".
@3:22 wee tip- use a sander against the edge of the form to vibrate the concrete- gets the bubbles out
WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME ALL THE TIME?
Loved your table!
It's "kaaw-k" it's not "cawl-k"... you can say it. We're mostly adults here. ;)
I'm glad you kept your cool when things went wrong. What a beautiful table.
"video sponsored by pseudoscience"
AMAZING TABLE! Loved all your bloopers too!
I like this way better than what it would have looked like if everything went as planned. I’m impressed that you were able to switch gears and still make something great!
Yup. Love it. Doing it, skipping the rebar given the wood support. Thank you.
wow, honestly one of the coolest diys i've ever seen.
Cool piece. I couldn't help but notice the chill tracks you used for music. It was quite enjoyable overall.
Wow!) Very stylish finish
I like how little bits of the gold leaf got into little holes in the concrete around the cracks. All just super tiny and giving it a bit of extra shine.
Good call on the concrete dye going into the water - not the mix. My first concrete form pour I mixed the concrete and then dumped a few blubs of dye. The result was actually pretty cool - gave sort of a marble effect. If you want uniform color - add dye to water. If you want a marbling effect - add dye to wet concrete and mix only moderately.
I just bumped into these videos. This dude is so cool upbeat and enthusiastic. Lovn it.
I love your video!! This is my first video and Im impressed. You are being honest and transparent! I love it! I just subscribed!
Even if you mess up or not. What matters is having fun doing it. Nothing is 100% perfect.
What a comeback, Mike. I would have thrown it in the woods for sure. Btw started on your podcast. Totally digging it!
I subscribed to you based on the mishaps and your honesty about them. Nice job in the end!
It is AMAZING! My grandma and greatgrandma loved it as well👏🌿
So cool ....!!! It blows my mind in so many ways ... You build something you broke it then fix it to make it better 🎇 I like it !!!
I was looking for more information about kintsugi and I was really liking the look of this table. I would have made my own legs out of old metal though. If the concrete were strong enough to do without the wood on the bottom, I would try setting something like a t-nut into it. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing such a great video. I’ve got some Plaster of Paris leftover and I’m wondering if I could substitute the concrete with it. 👏👍🙏🏻😊
Great comeback mike!! No fails just learnings!! Killed it as always!!!
Looks so doppe! Best accidental project ever. 🙌🏼
Thought this would be a usual video then you got a little more detailed in descriptions and when you mentioned Kintsugi you got my full attention. (Wish you could've delved a wee bit more into what Kintsugi is, but..) Absolutely beautiful outcome.
This is soooo much cooler than a river table
Big props to you and your friend that made this suggestion. It turned out awesome! Great recovery 👍🏽
This is a "Bob Ross Happy Accident" Gorgeous!
This is accidentally my favorite furniture project you've done!
This is so amazing
I might have suggested epoxy resin & led so it looks like lava cracks/kryptonite/ radio active /lightning /sparks (depending on colour)
Just found you. RUclips randomly recommended you to me. Not sure why, but I'm glad it did. You have a new subscriber.
I have to say Mike. That turned out pretty fantastic. Great save.
Perfect idea for my mosaic table to finish the edges 👌🏽 TY!
This turned out Beautiful. Every fault is fashion.
Mike, before the concrete cures you can use a knife/trowel or similar to make a 1-2cm indent into the top (ie. eventual bottom) along the intended crack line, then once it cures this will crack easily. That's how they do it for large concrete slabs to control crack locations
One of the best tables ever seen
Wow - I really love the end result. Looks modern and classy, laissez-faire chic. I'm tempted to try something similar - thanks for all the tips and info - informative and inspirational.
Ok I love the project and the creativity to work around bumps. But what are hairpin legs for and why do ppl make these small 10 inch tables. Chairs. What are these
Not quite sure how to manage to do it Every. Single. Time. But that’s another certified banger man!
no mistakes, man, just "design changes"! ha ha! great work. personally, i would have used longer legs and just painted the plywood bottom to make it less noticeable, but either way, the table top makes it legit.
The coolest recovery EVER!!!!!!
I feel so dumb, because I love kintsugi and I never thought about applying it to something else than mugs... Love your creativity, as always ! Congrats !
Brilliant! Gotta love those ancient Japanese techniques...Shousugiban, Yosegi, Shibori, Kintsugi etc!!!!!!! 👍🏽🙏🤪💥
You are talented and fun. This is a super fantastic episode.
