- In this video I will show you how to DIY pour and finish a simple concrete slab with Rapid Set Concrete Mix. This may only be a small 2'x5' slab but the possibilities are HUGE! In optimal weather conditions you can drive on Rapid Set Concrete Mix in only ONE HOUR! Since it was only 35 degrees I waited until the next day but that's still a BIG DEAL. I hope you learn and enjoy!

First video of many I’ve seen that really explains how to make a concrete slab. It even gave me the confidence to make a concrete slab I need for my dog’s kennel.
When you're working with a small area, and you're working alone, like you did in this video, mix all of your rapid set concrete at one time. This can be done in several buckets, one for each bag, or you can rent a small mixer. If you don't want to spend money on 5 gallon buckets, or a mixer, ask your local bakery if they have any that they are going to be throwing away, most bakeries will give you the buckets for free. This will prevent your rapid set concrete from hardening while you mix the next bucket. If you have any leftover concrete mix, dump it into a heavy duty plastic yard waste bag, and as it hardens, shape the concrete into somewhat of a rock shape. When the concrete dries, peel the plastic away for an accent piece in your yard or garden.
I love this recommendation.
I was just thinking something similar, pre-filling water buckets and other ways to do a sidewalk with rapid set. Great advice
@@tedkay1048 Thank you!!
@@Inkachu Thank you!!
Mask needed!
That was actually the most helpful concrete video I have watched. RUclips is plagued with PSI perfectionists.
Just like when the industry turned from copper and galvanized to PEX pipe, all the old guys who are invested come out and gripe and gripe and gripe and gripe.
* Test your work to its Requirements
* If it passes, you did well
That brought back so many memories of helping my dad do cement work. He poured2 large double wide driveways. Living out in the county we had acres for our 2 properties. He was a perfectionist with his work.
I’m confident I can do this. After watching your video thank you.
That’s what I’m talkin about! 👍🏻🎉
I did something like this at my old place for my garbage cans. My land lord loved me ! Even though I ws renting I needed to do projects just to keep my sanity and level of self worth . I did not expect the truck driving over the rapid set like that. Rapid set is the SHIZ!!
I wish I had a place closer to me that sold Rapidset. Two years ago I used the mortar mix to make countertops for a custom kitchen. I ran out of it in the middle of the project and had to drive for two hours to get more. This company makes an incredible product. I also built a set of bedroom furniture and I made concrete tops for the dresser and end tables. My wife loves it.
You are great at describing what you are doing! I also enjoy listening to you when informing us on how to do it.
I have watched thousands of videos on various topics.
How come video authors hardly respond to questions asked? I know you are busy, but if you are going to post a video, please reply to the questions asked by your viewers so we can become more educated about what you are doing and produts used.
I love your videos and your presentations, just want to see more feedback from you on questions.
Thanks for sharing!!!
😊😊😊😊
Looks great, I'm a recent first time home owner and this video is perfect for what I'm gonna do for a small resin storage shed install. All my questions answered with this video... Thanks Michael.
This is what I've been needing, thank you so much for showing me how to make a form and how to level it, and everything else. I think this is the best video ever, just easy step by step. Thanks again!
Thank you so much Wendy! I don’t know why I didn’t see this comment three weeks ago but I’m so happy I saw it eventually haha
For a job like this I use 2 inches of gravel and two inches of cement using 123 mix on the cement. I do drive my pick up on it also. All my non structural cement is laid like this and iam on 34 years of using this technique with no excessive cracking. Saves on cement on large jobs
Thats probably because you used a sand compactor first or your soil is already dense/hard as a rock. Driving over 2 on 2 Wouldn't work in SW Florida unless you pound the crap out if the sand with a gas compactor.
Most informative concrete video I have seen
I looked all over the RUclips for someone using clean fill for this project!! Thank you bro!
I loved the tool review, one by one, very very guiding and assisting. Correct good tools are 50% done in my mind.
Thank you for understanding that this woman is a beginner and I need you to explain it well…which you did! And you looked like you were having fun!
You are very welcome! ☺️
Woohoo! 🎉 I have zero experience with this and your video gave me all the confidence I need. I’m now off to Home Depot! Wish me luck!
Thank you, truly!
Awesome! Thank you for taking the time to make all these very informative videos 👍❤️🙏
You’re the man …! 👍
I’m in Texas and it’s cold AF! I’m going to do this slab for my trash cans … thanks Michael !!
im going to re make this video this winter exactly same idea except a title change. see if it really works
I`ve used this mix quite a few times ,It`s costs a bit more than regular cement mix but it preforms very well in the long run and finishes very good the only con I ever had was that it`s has a brownish color instead of gray.
Hey Michael, that was a great video. I really appreciated that. I enjoy just seeing how you edged the slab as I didn't know there was a special tool for that. I didn't know how that was done so that was very informative. But then again, all your videos are informative. Thanks very much and happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you so much Monty! I enjoy watching your videos more than mine though hahaha
Dude, just found your channel. You are my hero...!!! 💪🇺🇲💪🇺🇲
Well WELCOME TO THE CHANNEL ED! 👍🏻☺️
Watching this video....and im literally a professional... entertaining stuff great video
Appreciate the very instructive and entertaining video. 👍
Thank you!
You're great at packing info into your videos.
I try haha
We use this concreate mix to reset manholes, works great if you can't keep an area closed or have to pave asphalt within the hour or so.
Hey Mike, great video. I will try to pour concrete in my back yard now that I have a better understanding on how to go about it.
Another amazing project Mr. Builds!
Thank you Mr. Kerrigan 😉
"First off, don't call me Mike". "First of all, stop calling me Mike" hahahaha. Great video and information!
You said that you're not a professional, and if you're watching this video, neither are you. I've been a carpenter and concrete finisher for 32 years, so at least 1 professional watches your videos. From what I've seen, you take pride in your work, you have a good attitude, and you're a better finisher than a lot of the so-called journeyman that the union hall sends out. I'd say that makes you a professional. You just need to learn the terminology, for example, I don't know why, but we say rodding instead of screeding, so we call it a rod, or rod board instead of a screed or screed board. That industrial trowel is called a Fresno. The magnesium float is called a mag. Finishing is implied, so finishing trowels are just called trowels unless they have round corners, and those are calld pool trowels. That edger is called a shiner or a border edger. The tool you cut the joint with is called a jointer or a groover.
This is one bad ass tweaker! He does inspire me!
You are so entertaining. I'm no expert on anything like do it yourself... I watch RUclips videos on using cement for garden vases and sculptures..but they never tell you what kind of cement to use... mortar or whatever...so I'm lost .however I like your lesson plans and again you are informative and entertaining. Thank you.
Thank you so much Debbie! I definitely want to do some concrete planters next summer. And I will tell you everything I use haha
Cement is just Portland, mortar is Portland cement and sand, concrete is mortar with aggregate (stones) of varying size depending on the thickness of your concrete. Use mortar for all decorative USES. (Grout is just mortar with a flow control type of liquifier aka water reducer).
@@chadwessels1441 thank you. Very helpful.
Great info Michael. Thank you for discussing the different tools you used.
Hell yeah! Thank you!
Thanks so much I now feel like I can do it by myself. I do need some of the tools but I think I can better yet I know I can Thanks so much very helpful.
That’s what I’m talkin about! ☺️👍🏻
Terrific work on that concrete slab Mike! You always make it look easy. 👍👍👏👏
Haha thank you!
@@MichaelBuilds "First of all, don't call me Mike." LOL I am a DIY video aficionado. You have the most fun and funny (and very informative) videos. Thanks.
I really enjoy your concrete work...it's pretty solid!!! LOL!
Ahhhh! Get it?!? Lol 😂
Thanks Mike. Very helpful and entertaining. Sorry Mike!
Thank you. Nice and simple. I need to put down short concrete walkway that's under a deck and I'm concerned about the lack direct sunlight. Hope it dries OK.
Great job that slab is going to keep your wood, dry and organized! ~Cara 😊
I love you guys! Great work! Very inspiring! Wish I lived in La and you were neighbors!
😂👍🏻
Looks great for such a fast curing concrete!
But in real life situation I think most people with a budget would buy regular concrete mix bags for this project since the cost (at least in Canada) is over 5X more for rapidset. Would be a$150 CAD project instead of $30.
I understand that it is a sponsor and you do great projects with them.
Keep the great works and projects!
I was thinking the same thing
Great point, and you don't need to be a Cannuk to realize the "kicker" while standing at Home Depot and looking at the price tags, ahahah
good video, nice story telling
A very professional result.
have you ever tried pouring the concrete dry filling up the area that you formed then mysting the top with water hose.. letting that top set the spray in couple hours with more water then completely saturating the concrete completely with water and letting it set... it will work and wont crack and you dont have to set there and mix anything.
I’ve never tried that before because it’s been drilled into my head that that is the wrong way to do it… like borderline sacrilegious lol. But ever since that couple down in Louisiana did that RUclips video proving that it doesn’t crack… I’m thinking I need to do a video on this subject lol 😂
@@MichaelBuilds Lol! you should it would be good for your lady followers who want to do concrete projects but dont want to handle the mixing part. the only downside is the time isnt a quick 20 mins. It would take a day or so of spraying and letting it sit then spraying again. :)
@@MichaelBuilds also i am glad i found your channel again i was subscribed along time ago and youtube unsubcribed me for some reason. i love your videos. Have an amazing week!
Wow! Look at you go! Over 300k subs now! Congratulations! I have been subbed since day one! Love your work....
I love hearing from my OG’s! 👍🏻😉🙏
This is quite a coincidence, I am currently upgrading the pads for my hives. I'm near AA so can relate to the current weather hiccups
Rapidset is an awesome product. Just need to understand how FAST everything will set up. I use Rapidset Mortar for doing stucco work on concrete block foundations as well as ICF.
I did a 5x9 section in my back yard I pour the dry bag then sprayed it with water.. it came out good it was for my dogs, so far it hasn’t cracked it’s been about 9 months since I did it
Nice! 👍🏻😊
I think you did an overall top job explaining how to finish concrete. 1) no need for a trowel if you are broom finishing, 2) always joint your concrete first before brooming and then do a final pass like you did with the edger, 3) GREAT explanation of the difference on contraction vs expansion joints.
Led me to think
Chad if this was a bigger job where you put the mesh? Does it go on the bottom or middle? Does it matter?
"don't call me Mike" haha. That's my biggest pet peeve. I hate it when people call me Mike.
Honestly halfway thru the pour i was scared for you. Good save! It turned out great for what it will be used for.
Interesting. I had to tell my wife about that. Never seen anyone do that in cold weather and snowing. 🙂
If you are watching this video then well neither you are... ha ha ha ha, you are absolutely right, thanks for sharing, it is exactly what I needed.
Rapid set is awesome for small projects. I wouldn't use this for huge jobs unless you have help!
That’s the truth! Lol
@@MichaelBuilds that stuff is definatly impressive. I have to drive a hundred miles to get to my nearest Home Depot.
Looking pretty good again Mike, 👌
Excellent information. Thank you!
"First of all, don't call me Mike" - hilarious...
Lol 😂
Awesome and timely. I was just wondering about pouring a 10x8 slab but its winter......so thanks for showing it can be done.
For 3rd slab not bad. Push your luck with quickset and that many bags 😉.
I noticed you didn’t tap the sides or oil the frame which can be a @#& with Portland based when removing.
Remember, strength of concrete is dependent on water to concrete ratio. You had a “soupy mix” which is fine for what your doing. If less water was used, you may be fighting time.
Good job for 3rd slab and yes it’ll work great for its purpose and ya didn’t have to bring in a handyman or small contractor to do the work 👍
Michael, can you do a curving garden border video?
I need this for my breakdance practice
Awesome job my friend! Looks great, I love a nice looking log store, can't wait to see the finished article :-)
Love it! I'm going to try to make one of these.
Thank you 😊 🙏
I absolutely loved this video! Thank you! Did you start working the edging immediately or did you have to wait a little bit. What are the signs you are looking for to start working the edging? 🤔
Work it immediately. You don’t have time to wait with this stuff haha
I love Rapidset except for 1 huge issue... the cost... I thought about casting my own pavers 2'x2' x 1.25" and it would cost about the same if I bought a really nice 2' x 2' x 3/4" thick porcelain paver... I do like other uses for it but it sure would be great if the cost wasn't so damn high at $15 a bag
I've done thousands of footers for foundations. We used metal(reusable) stakes with nails{less reusable) and you just angle the skreet board to get around the stakes sticking up. Never had one we could drive on in an hour though 😜
Thanks for sharing, that's actually a pretty useful tip
5 quarts of water seems to make a lot more sense then quickcretes recommended 3 for an 80 lb bag.
Great job, Mike! (Sorry Michael, I couldn't resist!
Could you pour a whole driveway or steps with this type of concrete ?
Hey mike. Hope all is well. What’s the best concrete brand or type of concrete to use to expand (widen) a drive way? Thanks
Omg thank you! I love this!
Hey Michael!!! Another great video! And I see my preferred name! Yaaay! Thank you!💕
Hey, I was wondering if you would ever make a video of counter tops that we don't flip. How to make them smooth and sealed. Thank you for you amazing work! 😍🥰😁
You are welcome! I was excited for you to see it haha. I will absolutely do a “pour in place” this summer. It one of the only projects that my channel is missing.
@@MichaelBuilds Yeah and I was excited to see my name! I feel special! Thanks again! 😁
@@MichaelBuilds You could do that at my place After we reserface the cabinates ..., LOL
You make it seem super easy, that's great 👍
Interesting I did a small section just like you but dry and just water it ever hour for times I didn't want to mix. It worked
how's your dry pour holding up you park cars on it?
Nice job Michael 👏
Can u use this over my existing concrete? Like damaged areas , especially just doing a top layer. To make it look new again.
Thanks Mike.
Roger that! 👍🏻☺️
I think I'll try this --- soon ...
i usually mix some gravel with the concrete mix.
Great video!!! I'm doing some 20x20x2 pavers, do I still need to put rock down or can I just tamp and wet the earth? Thanks!
Craftily Shrewed
Good job my man 👍🏾
Try dry pour if you haven't. Seems less messy & easier. Cajun living has a video on it.
I did lol 😂

@@MichaelBuilds Can you make a video dry pouring with rapid set?
Great job made me laugh your not a pro and if your watch neither are you. I'm a PE (Professional Engineer) and was a ACI Concrete Special Inspector. I have watched and inspected a lot of Pros, your work was far better than a lot of them. But what got me watching in the first place was my not being around this particular Rapid Set Mix so i watched and was impressed. Bubbles along the edge use Quikcrete, extra ridges use a grinder to pretty it up. Great job.
Thanks Mike. I mean Micheal 😊
I'm still waiting for the truck test. Only saw a Ford
LOL 😂 That’s my wife’s truck hahaha I’m still savin up for my 85’ Chevy K-10
Thanks Mike! ❤
👍🏻☺️
MIKE!!! 🤣Great job buddy ;)
18 bucks a bag is a little salty. Use the red bags from quickcrete in cold weather mixed 2 to 1 with yellow bag
Can you DIY a small driveway with this? My current drive is made of rocks, and trying to snow blow during winter can cause issues...like flying rocks.
Thanks! You do your projects so cool!!
Thank You for the video. The biggest screw up for me is always the amount of water issue. So it is 5 quarts of water per 60 pound bag? I could not tell how big the bags were. And 5 60 pound bags per 10 square feet? Thank You in advance for your respopnse.
This is very informative. Thank you.
Michael: Most guys in the trades would think your concrete was a little too "wet" but I saw you mix according to the directions. Do the directions mention adding more retarder and less water for a stronger pour? Just wondering. Thanks.
Not to wet for that mix ,if you mix it like the other guy says it will set up in 10 minutes hard.
Sure it looks too wet. The author might have messed up the proportions, he looked too adventurous. Seems you are one of some 100 commentators who wrote about it. The more water the less strength to the slab. The water seeped into the ground in this case and there was no "sea of mud", but with the water some of the cement gone also and it weakened the final product.
MIKE it’s a wood pile slab looks fine
☃️🔥 Michael Builds Ford Tough 🔥☃️
YAY!!! Another great "How to" video. At what point (is it the dept of concrete ?) do you add rebar? Or does the compacted terrain mitigate the need for reinforcement?
Lol 😂
You would actually have to rebar already set up and elevated to the mid point in the form before you pour.
Great work Mike
Thank you. very helpful.
Michael!!!! Can you use rapid flow on an incline??? In need to redo part of the sidewalk w/an incline …
Great job 👏🏻
Hay Mike that Looks Great. Looking forward to the wood bin. I'm doing our backyard over. We will have a Fire Pit. That bin may work with our backyard. Have a GREAT Thanksgiving.
