I do a lot of similar masonry work and I found that if you take the eraser off of a regular pencil, then you can use the "eraser end" of a pencil to make the lines between the rocks when carving rock-type patterns into cement. It effectively gets the cement out while simultaneously smoothing out the cement. I also use a piece of 60 grit sandpaper to "stamp" the cement when doing a brick pattern. The sandpaper impression makes the brick carvings look more natural, if that's the look you're going for. Just wanted to share with everyone!!

Mike Bonfiglio - Thanks for the tips on stamping with different tool ideas - Pencil/60 grit & others size grits too. As a thought, you could spray the backs with a waterproof sealant that you can then wash with minimal deterioration?

Nice video. When I was in my younger 20's a older stucco guy taught me his brick trick. First apply the stucco layer in the natural grey color. Then we would add some dyed (red, orange, black, purple) mix thin layer over the top to it to look like brick (different shades for different types of brick) Then you can add some rake lines with a rake tool if desired too, to look like raked brick. Now take a level to get straight lines and use a tool we would make from a handle and wire rolled into a loop at one end to carve out the mortar joints, this makes cleaner lines than a round over joint tool. You need to cut in deep enough to get thru the dyed layer and into the grey layer so your joints look like real mortar. When almost dry use a whisk broom or paint brush to fine tune the rough edges if wanted. Most people would never even know it was stucco and not real brick when finished. Oh.. and I been doing it over 40 years 😊hehehe.

I have built a cinder block mailbox, with rebar and filled the centers with cement, like 2 years ago. I have heard the gossip girls comment negatively as the sashay past on their futile exercise walks, as I left it completely unfinished aesthetically. It serves me in my rural area, to prevent turdburds from smashing my postbox, they would definitely not have fun hitting it. Your video inspires me to finally make it look respectable, thank you!

I built a cinder block pizza oven (4' x 6' footprint, 7' tall) and now I know how to finish it!! Since I built the oven, I have been reviewing lots of YT vids on how to stucco- put out there by guys in the business with 30 yrs experience (HA!) and none have given the concise info I needed until yours. It is rare to find a teacher that is able to show how it actually feels to mix, layer and parge the product. Thanks so much. The brick with part plaster look is really cool in industrial looking apartments and flats but until you see it all together and complete it's hard to imagine. Michael thank you so much , I can't put a price tag on information like this . So many guys aren't willing to share knowledge and skills. You are truly a Craftsmen and our younger kids need to learn these skills or anything working with your hands , as a head hunter friend of mine told me these are the jobs that will pay the huge salaries very soon. I know 2 HVAC guys who both make over 150 thousand a year. LEARN A SKILL OR A TRADE YOUNG PEOPLE, IT PAYS WELL AND YOU FEEL GREAT ABOUT YOURSELF AT THE WND OF THE DAY BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE CAN DO THIS , BUT ALMOST ANYONE CAN PUNCH KEYS ON A COMPUTER AND THIA STUFF USUALLY PAYS BETTER.

I've been doing this type of work for over 50 years. Yeah, I'm that old. Never used a premix, though. I like it. You did a great video. I'm definitely going to try it out...on cooler days. I like the lack of extra lime required for bonding and copying what the old-timers of my early days called Keene's cement, which gave the mortar an ability to be polished. Very nice.
    Cool video. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Mike, pretty cool. Watching you I couldn't help but think about some of your other vids creating molds and how they could apply to this, i.e. "Stamping" patterns for use on larger areas. Can you combine the entire process, coming up with a pattern for either walls or flat surfaces, making the mold, then applying the mold to the mortar or whatever type of material you choose to use to create a finished larger area?

Well done. I did similar work in the film industry for years (not 30 years, but yeah, it sounds good. ...it was 17 years). The stone work is very good. The bricks could be dressed out a bit more realistically in a couple of ways. One, use a flat stick of wood or ruler to mark dimension of the brick (especially the vertical thickness), and especially if it's a larger wall (for those doing a large section), use a 1x4 or other strait board to then make the horizontal "mortar joints" parallel. Two, I usually pop some edges off some corners, especially if it's replicating old brick, and round off to soften hard edges (old brick was soft clay and would have eroded over the decades/centuries). You can thin some mortar and use a "pastry bag" to have mortar bulging in spots instead of clean pointed brick. A couple of other thoughts before getting too long winded.... one, use fingers, but wear blue nitrile gloves. All masonry products include lime and are abrasive, especially mortar. Your fingers will be dried out and split if you don't. Secondly, just as info, if you're doing the project indoors, you can use "structolite" plaster (that's what we use in the film industry). It has perlite in the mix to give a similar texture, and is a bit easier to work with. Just don't use it outdoors because it won't last. Again, well done and thanks. Today is the first time a video of your popped up on the right.
