50 years ago we used to make all our set designs with sheet foam. In those days we just used petrol to create the weathered natural look. Then we'd paint it up to look like stone arches or log cabins. Foam is such a versatile material. You're only limited by your imagination.
@@TikiTiffany Yes, as long as you seal it well. I've had a foam sculpture outside for a few years and because it's been sealed with a few coats of all weather sealer on top of the artwork, it has not deteriorated at all.
40 years ago, I used to do sets and we used acetone to weather the foam for stone walls. I would take a brush and fling it at the styrofoam to eat out spots. Then we used at least 3 shades of gray.
I would like to do this on my basement walls. Our basement is a finished 2 bedroom apartment. The only problem is it has block walls on the exterior and my husband and I disagree about insulating them because likes the painted blocks and the painting technique that was done on them. The outside of the house is real slate rock so I think, especially in the living room it would give me the insulation I want and him the look he wants. It's a win win for us! Thank you so much for this idea to end our 6 year disagreement. ❤️
This is great for my RV!! I did NOT want to do stick on tile; it doesn’t hold up. But tile is WAY too heavy in an RV and fragile! What a great lightweight alternative for my shower !! 🚿 thanks guys-!

Hi Ronda! Tx for this unlock! ;P These kind of panels would have a very functional purpose built even from thicker foam and glued to external walls of the house or garage, offering a better insulation by increasing the R value of that wall, also you don't need to worry about re painting or changing a wallpaper. Also in shower panels or wrapping up a kitchen island is great idea, and why not, maybe even head boards for beds or big dresser doors. The small backsplash could also be carved and glued to door architrave/jamb casing/decorative trim around the door! I would not place them close to an intense source of heat though as the foam might melt if it got hot.
I am just BLOWN AWAY WITH THIS VIDEO!!!!! Wow, wow, WOW!!!! You started my wheels turning!!!! Faux Effects has so many plaster products that you could use to build up on the rocks to make the rocks different heights and textures!!! I can’t wait to experiment with my ideas. Of course I love the turquoise!!!!! Even your mica flakes would add more interest.
This is old school stuff. In fact, of bet my legs that half the buildings in your city are built out of metal studs covered in Styrofoam and rock texture paint. While the interiors are foam carved with cylinder block, wood, Stone patterns then painted. Fast growing cities have been doing this for at least two decades. Also using slick finished concrete with stains to emulate marble then epoxied over. Old old old stuff. It's cheap, fast and often stands up to tornadoes. Almost every modern (built in the last two to three decades) hospital, doctors office, federal building is built out of this decorated foam. It's also good against hurricanes. As long as the plates are attached to the studs etc.
Your rock wall is one of the best I've seen doing my research of creating faux rocks. I'm going to use this technique on the back wall of my aquarium. With fish safe materials, of course. I especially like the glove technique. The rocks came out so real looking. THANK YOU for the awesome inspiration.
It's mind boggling what can be done! Thank you both for sharing this technique as it will open so many doors for others! What you both did looks amazing, on just a simple piece of foam!!!!!
Came across this by accident whilst searching for vivarium decoration. Love the whole process and outcome, as for where to use. I am making backgrounds for my 7 Leopard Gecko vivariums enclisures. I am from England, so I need to find equivalent products for some of the materials. It's a great tutorial, thank you 😊
I love the added turquoise! My favorite side is the spray can rub as it looks much more like stone. It’s a great project and excellent look. Keep up the wonderful ideas.
Wow, mind blowing! You ladies ROCKED this project out of the park. I love it! Since I am remodeling a house that I grew in, and, have been redoing all of the bedrooms, I now have the perfect project to use for an art piece over one of the beds. Believe I will be using the spray paint technique although, I do like the acrylic paint look as well.
Lot of great effort and materials used! I cant say its a uplifting and pleasing look, as it looks like a dungeon look, but for such a look it is good work. I think as mentioned in the start, a lighter, gray mortar look would be much better than black. And yes, the turquoise helped, but very muddy dark dungeon look.
I live in a tiny apartment and I think that by using this to surround the balcony doors, cover the whole wall, 12foot including the glass doors, I think that it would help give the illusion of spaciousness and grandeur. Nice, when you live in a tiny box of an apartment. Just imagine,it's even better if you are involved with SCA or play D&D. Even better, you can take it with you when you move of you are careful installing it.😍
Really cool explanations. I think this is helpful not only for houses and walls, but also for terrarium builders. There’s a huge number of people who would be interested in this out there!
I absolutely love this faux rock wall I'd have to say the side with the turquoise gives it a natural weathered look great job ladies, I'm definitely gonna try this out and have it as my accent wall 😉
WOW..who would have known this was not real Rock! I think I like the side with the spray paint better. Both looks great though..loved the torques. Great job Ladies.
Stunning! I would like suggestions on mounting and on how to interlock panels (that would be a great video!). We’re going to attempt this for our bedroom wall. Since I’m currently not sure how to do an interlocking panel, we are planning on doing a wood ‘grid’ and placing each panel inside the ‘block’. As for that turquoise…. I have a birth ‘defect’ that gives me an extra cone in both eyes, so I see color a bit different and pick up more colors on the spectrum than ‘normal’ people do. If you could see what see, you would be even more impressed with the turquoise as I pick up a tinted green and blue. It’s gorgeous!
I love the faux rock foam board. Who would ever had thought you could do that. I am going to make a pet door in my slidiing glass door and am going to try this. Thanks for such good ideas.
So glad I found this channel. I've been planning this project for about a year now and just came across this video. I have learned you can also use a hair dryer or heat gun to "roughen up" the foam board. Then, if you very lightly spray it with water prior to the hair dryer or heat gun, it makes it look even better. Fantastic rock wall !!!!!
I would do it on the outside of my mobile house when I redo it to my tastes. And make it look like lapis lazuli on the larger stones, with sodalite and turquoise for the smaller ones. With antique ivory for the grout.
QUESTIONS: Where can this be installed? How? How to care for and maintain? One side began to look a bit like wood and the other stone. They are all beautiful. Knowing where these can and can not be used would be helpful! The process is almost too easy! Thanks for another easy, budget friendly way to update/DIY our surroundings.
Great question. I wouldn’t install them to extremely high heat or outside where they are exposed to direct sunlight. UV causes both the epoxy and the insulation foam to get brittle and crack.

I carve foam with a wood burner and then kiss it worth a torch to give it character. I put up a "stone wall" in my garage behind my forge. Just have to make sure it does not get hot! The flame kiss gives it a similar finish to what you have there and cause the foam to become very hard.

I happened upon this technique about 25 years ago while making Halloween decorations. I wanted to make "headstones" out of 2" Styrofoam. I cut the basic shape and started to carve out the "names/dates" . It was horrible and so time consuming! So, I decided to spray paint over it to hide how bad it was. VOILA! I saw it eating up the Styrofoam and it left a beautiful, old, weathered texture. Bright idea...just paint the names/dates and let the paint melt the styro. Looked carved. Knocked out 5 more in less time than the first hand carved. I had the best ever decor that year. I've been pricing faux stone for my living room and can't get below 4000 bucks.
