- This week, we hosted a Mock Rock taster course at the Zoo for staff from Zoos around the country to tak epart in and learn the basics of how to create artificial rock and trees from cement.
In this video, there are timelapses of mock rock creation showing all of the stages involved. Also, get a sneak peak in our new reptile & invertebrate area that we are working on.

Love it! We've been building artifical rock for 40 years and I've never heard it referred as mock rock BUT I LOVE that term!! Great stuff! We need more of the craft online!
What mix/ material do you use to build them? Do you do a wire mesh substrate?
Awesome inspiration for my RC rockcrawling course.
Thank you for sharing
SO, glad you filmed that Maxine. We often get asked about the rocks and I'll feel really confident in explaining what it is and how it's constructed. Brilliant! X
So very cool! I want to do this in my yard!
Some of the coolest projects are in the back yard!
This guy is an artist. The trees are amazingly real. Much admiration Aiden, that you are sharing your expertise!
Fully agree! Clearly a talented artist
Hey a friend/ really great zoo keeper I met at Safari Zoo mentioned he is moving to work at Northuberland Zoo. Great guy, really nice, full of knowledge and experience!
We know who you mean! Great addition to the team :-)
@@NorthumberlandZoo Absolutely! We'll definitely make a visit sometime and say hi to you all 😀
What a fantastic talent and well done NZ for sharing this and the amazing uses of Mock rock around in the zoo.
We agree!
Aiden is so talented. It's great that he is happy to share his knowlege.
What an art that is! Aidan has done an amazing job and it's pretty special that he's shared his skills and knowledge. The mock rock in the parrot house is brilliant. Really interesting video!!! Thank you
Excellent video. Aidan does a great job. They look so real.
Thanks from Fance...!!!
Really cool video! It’s amazing how many people are out there making fake rocks and things. I remember dreaming about doing this in a zoo as a kid!
Critter corner.
Aidan must have looked at ALOT of rocks!!
Too many.
WoW ... interesting, informative and SO creative ... loved seeing the process.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would have loved to attend this!
Im gojng to have to pay you guys a visit now i know you are only up the road!
Wow came out nice
Прекрасная работа. Молодцы 🎉
That’s really cool
Thats what i needed!!!
Thanks this viv helped me a lot:)
Very generous of Aidan to share his expertise, looks like it was a super interesting workshop. Are the extra poles coming out of the side of the new tree for a branch?
Yup stucco is cool in so many ways
Fascinating. Extremely talented
Such a great artist, so great to see others build!
Aadan lol I have been doing this stuff for years 😁
Awesome! We are rock artists too! Where do you work out of? We are always trying to make faux rock artist friends
Actually i kind of looked it at 9.27 most, cos the trees here have so much moss on it. Maybe that might be a fun look for the bottem part a bit if you spray is different collours of green :)
Good
Beutiful concrete work!!! What do you guys use as a waterproof sealer for rock work thats sumberged?
There are a few sealers out there, we use kryton, just make sure anything below waterlevel is backfilled
What is the bonding agent used? It just said “bonding agent”. Thanks! I’m building a monitor room right now lol
Really good work. Im also artist.
Love the it what kind of tool is that that you are using to attach the mesh to the rebar?
Its a little pneumatic hog ring gun, saves loads of time!
I was searching for this question perfect
Or just tie wire if you build with rebar, can't find a hog tie gun that does 10mm rebar lol
Super cool thanks!! Are the rods epoxied or glued into the floor and wall ? Or are they just sat in the drilled holes?
They are just shoved into the holes and the weight of the structure/concrete holds them in place.
If you are outside it's a good idea to epoxy them in :)
@@Rockscapes cool thanks so much
Are there any plans for an online version of the course? I help run an animal sanctuary in the US, but would love to learn to make these for our animals!
Great idea - I’ll see about making a video playlist just about mock rocking 🤓 thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Such a great plan!! These videos will for sure help! We try to show the step by step process as well if you ever have questions!
What kind of color did he used on the stones ?
We used off-the-shelf masonry paint, light grey, dark grey and a white dry brush to add the scratched details.
Concrete stains and acids work great but you've got to be careful with the acid
Dec 31: This week, there’s a new video, longer. I figure I’ll watch the earlier version first!
Suggestion for a name for your critter enclosure - A Northumberland Bug's Life?
How was he attaching the mesh to the rebar?
Using a hog-ring pneumatic gun. You can also use cable ties 👍🏻
Is that a standard mortar or did he ad something to the mix?
It is a cement mix with added plasticiser and fibres - this is what makes the mix workable and carvable!
Do you have ratios/products please?
what tool is he using to tie the metal lathe together?
It is a pneumatic hog ring gun 👍
And where is the continuation of the video? What happened? What have you done?
Good point! I’ll do a follow up soon 👍
I’m a theme park enthusiast and I’ve stumbled on this video search for rock work, and it’s something I’ve wanted to learn. Would you open this workshop up to hobbyists like myself? If so, how much would it cost to take the course?
That’s a great idea and you aren’t the only one who has suggested it, I’ll aim to make a playlist on RUclips about the process - watch this space 🤓
@@NorthumberlandZoo Ahhh you're amazing! I really would pay for masterclasses on this. Your work is certainly up there with major competitors like Universal Rocks and AAB. Looking forward to any potential updates :D
Such a great idea, what would you be trying to build?
@@Rockscapes I'm a huge fan of Big Thunder Mountain, Disneyland Paris, and I'd love to be able to replicate those rocks. Trees are another one, faux wood beams, bricks. That sorta stuff.
@@erolhuseyin6460 killer! We've done some theme work, lots of faux wood and rock. Bare wood you can get away with just brush and carving, actual bark you'll want to make a stamp
What are the structure rods he is using?
Just 6mm steel rods, joined together with zipties 👍
What brand of mud/cement and model?
The cement is just standard - builders sand works best and mix in a little bit of plasticiser which is what helps keep the mix together and hold shapes!
Looking at the room made completely of wood. I propose it😊s called WOODLAND. You can send my prize in the post if you like.
Thanks for moving so fast on the tree and bridge!! I guess the reason was so you could film yourself more, I did not enjoy your video
