🌟 About this video
So last year, I made this video reviewing 5 fragrances from Penhaligons:
✨Trying Penhaligon's fragrances: Halfeti, Luna, Elizabethan Rose, Empressa and The Favourite • Penhaligons Fragrances...
Since then, Penhaligon's fragrances have released the Potions and Remedies range and the apothecary style packaging attracted me! But were these perfumes living up to expectations?
I review and rank all of the fragrances in the Penhaligon's Potions and Remedies range and compare them to other fragrances that they remind me of.
But what about you, did you try anything from the Penhaligons Potions and Remedies and do any of them remind you of anything? Do you have any other suggestions for me to try from Penhaligons?
Special thanks to @roseandjones8390 and @ems_h.eartnotes for some of the samples.

For the price I must be wowed too. I absolutely agree !!!!!
Yes, these are not cheap! 🥰
Yup... Like Rolls Royce, Bentley, British Gas, BT, our Water companies, our government is owned by Russian and American Oligarchs... Not sure we own anything 😂 so I guess that makes Penhaligons even more "British" by actually not being
Bang on Jon! 😂 Nothing is British, even things that look very British, we sold everything 🤣
@@dr.claire.perfume worryingly... Am I the only "British" thing left 😱 altho less than 300yrs ago half my family migrated 🤣🤣
🤣
1870s wow! I love how their bottles hold on to the traditional packaging. But weird that it is not British anymore but this is the same through out so many industries kind of annoying. A Balm of Calm great name. Vra Vra Vroom sounds like it smells good. A frosting wow, but with florals hmmm. I think the blend of the woodiness and creaminess may be nice. I don't usually like sweet fragrances I tend to like more musky spicy scents. Yes they are a bit pricy. But a sample set could be an affordable way to try them out. Have to say love the names. A Kiss of Bliss such fun names. I never smelled Baby Cat. Peppery Rose ooooo. Great review here. 👍😍😊
They are worth trying if you come across them. I think they are quite loved. They definitely got the packaging spot on and I think the range is quite broad so that most people will find something that they enjoy. Thanks for watching 🥰
A kiss of bliss was an immediate love for me. I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I got home. I decided to get a sample which I’ve been loving so much. I think I will get the full bottle.
I think it's far and away the most interesting fragrance here. It stood out. I struggle with textures in fragrances sometimes and that one has a lot of texture so that's why it wasn't for me but I can totally see why someone would love it. Thanks for watching 🥰
I love Penhaligon’s fragrances and have found them to be very high quality! I wish Penhaligon’s had more of a presence here in the U.S. My husband and I have been sampling the Portrait collection and it’s stunning. Very unique.
I haven't tried many so far from the Portraits. I need to get some samples because trying in store I just find I spray too many of them at once and forget which I've tried. 😂 I would have thought that Penhaligon's would see the US market as sizeable enough to have a store presence in larger cities, but perhaps not?! If not, that's a shame. 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume In South Florida the major luxury department stores don’t carry them at the fragrance counters, however they will order for you. The Portrait collection is very unisex and so beautifully calibrated. A little goes a long way and is never overwhelming.
@@deborahg427 aah ok, well at least if you can sample them than actually purchasing a bottle is still a possibility. My brother lives in Clearwater but I've never been, I visited when he lived in Fort Lauderdale though and also when he lived in OK. 🥰
Thank you for making this video!
No worries! I hope it was useful! 🥰
Excellent overview!!
Thank you 🥰
Thank you for these reviews, Claire. Balm of calm appeals and thankfully it doesn't contain ambroxan so I will try that one. All my Penhaligon's are classics sometimes discontinued, Violetta, Cornubia, Victorian Posy, Hammam Bouquet, this one still exists, I'm no longer their target audience I think😀
Oh I remember Victorian Posy! I tried that in around the mid 2000s! It was pretty 😍 I agree, their focus, style and market has seemingly shifted in the last 10 years... I guess they are extremely successful though, especially in places like China. Thanks for watching 🥰
I so want to try this line! Thanks for this ❤
Aah no problem! I hope you get to sample them ☺️
Great review Claire! Very in depth! I'd heard of quite a few of these before, but it was good to hear a more detailed description of each! I haven't tried any of these yet, but I've really always wanted to try the Portraits collection, maybe someday I'll get the discovery set 😊😊
Thanks! Yes, I've not tried more than one of the Portraits collection. I can't say Penhaligon's have rocked my world so far, apart from with Solaris, I really enjoyed that one. 🥰
Yes I agree with the comparisons of Balm of Calm to Gris Charnel and Jazz Club. In fact I wore Jazz Club for bed the other night and wondered if I had sprayed Gris Charnel, I never found those two similar until then
Wow, I'm glad it's not just me! 🤣
Ooooo, been wanting more info on this line! 🎉
I agree about saffron if it’s in large doses. It’s so close to the leather I don’t like.
Yes, I love leather but with labdanum or gentler use of ibq, not so much saffron based leathers! Thanks for watching 🥰
I am here!
As time goes on, my interest in this line diminishes
10:48 Remind me to message you later
Fab video Claire. You’ve made these sound somewhat appealing 😂😂
Yeah... I can't say these rocked my world for their price point, but they weren't bad at all and there is truly something for most people here I think! ☺️
Good morning Claire ☕️
Morning Frances, happy Easter 🐰🐣
Thank you for your thorough descriptions. With your reviews, I not only understand which scents you like, and why you like them, but also, which scents may appeal to me, even though they are not your favorite.
That's good! That's what I aim for 😊 I hope you get to sample these if you are interested in them. Thanks for watching 🥰
Hi Claire. I’ve never sampled any Penhaligons. There prices are too much for me. But I appreciate your descriptions.
Thanks! I know, they are pricey aren't they?! Happy Easter 🐰🐣
Great review, Claire! I have two full bottles, Eau The Audacity and A Kiss of Bliss. Agree that ETA is extremely similar to Babycat (which we can't get here at a decent price...everyone who went to Europe and bought a bottle there is now selling them at outrageous prices). Thank goodness I don't get the fishiness with AKoB! I like all of them, actually, so hope they stick around for a while.
Kiss of Bliss is the standout amongst the line. I personally don't enjoy it, but it's far and away the most unusual and inventive.
I don't understand YSL's seemingly large supply problems with Babycat in the US. It's plentiful here 🤷♀️ they are nuts not to get their act together on that one...
I wish you Happy Easter !!♥️♥️♥️
Happy Easter to you too 🐣🐰🌱
I’m interested in buying this discovery set after watching your review. The packaging draws me in, as does all of Penhaligons. I have Clandestine Clara, I love to wear it in winter. Would like to see a review of the Portraits collection.
Fab! Happy that you found interest from this ☺️ none are really me, but I appreciate them, even the one that I don't love is so distinctive that that completely redeems it for me, I can totally see why people would be engaged by it and want to wear it.
I didn't try many at all from the Portraits collection, I will look into getting some samples. Thanks for watching 🥰
I just bought my first Penhaligons, Eau the Audacity, it was a blind buy but i have tried babycat dupes riffaquat and it reminds me of Babylon a lil, i love this scent profile, love at first sniff. Warm beautiful comforting scent that lasts all day
Yes! It's a really appealing profile I think, striking but familiar, people love it because it's a nice twist of vanilla and they will compliment you and think you smell great! Thanks for watching 🥰
I really love the thumbnail... like you in your lab 🧪
Thank you 😂 I try to make them pretty 🥰
Im about to move out of my vanilla favourite fragrances 🤦♀️so thankful for them during my unfortunate lack of smell LOL
it will be interesting to see what takes my fancy ? It will be an experimental video in the making !!
The few selection of Penhaligons I have tried out have been successful to me.
Dont think I have tried any of these yet ?
Loves this video ❤
Thank you ❤️ I think you'd like Liquid Love for sure, and perhaps also Vra Vra Vroom. 🥰
Such a shame Penhaligon's have been bought out by a conglomerate, especially as its such a long established british fragrance house.
Liquid Love sounds pretty for Spring but I've got a big decant of Delina and planning to get Rose Silence by Miller Harris sometime this year and Penhaligon's is very spendy so I'll hold fire on that. It does sound beautiful though.
I went to John Lewis in Cambridge last week and wanted to test Replica Sailing Day as you thought i might like it but couldn't find a tester unfortunately.
Wishing you a lovely Easter weekend Claire 💖
Penhaligons were sold in 2015, so it was a while ago. I think even Atkinson's has been bought now, there's only Floris left!
I think if you've got/get those two, then Liquid Love would be redundant.
That's a shame that they didn't have a tester... I hope you get to try it 😊
Happy Easter to you too 🐰
Thanks Claire. I don't own any Penhaligons. I do have Babycat & I love it❤
Babycat is very smooth in comparison to Eau the Audacity, it's well worth the extra money 🥰
You have just crushed my soul 😮 Not British WHAT !!
🤣 sorry
💟Good afternoon beautiful !! I'm here for that ❤
Good afternoon! Hope you are well! 🥰
Hoping your new job is going well, Dr. Claire.
Thank you! I've not started yet as I have to give three months' notice, but I will start it finally in late May ☺️ I'm looking forward to it 🥰
So curious about this collection
Yes! Me too! The apothecary lab look totally got me interested! 😂
I haven't really been able to get into Penhaligons for some reason. I find that all the ones I've tried always lean quite masculine on me. Very informative review as always!
If you haven't tried Solaris, I'd try that one, you might like it ☺️
I sure will. Thanks!
Hello Claire! I’ve been traveling and am regretfully behind on my beloved YT frag content 😟 I think I sniffed something from this house when I was in London 18 months ago, but don’t recall which one it was. 🤷🏼♀️ Don’t have any samples from this house so this is quite helpful. Thank you - I always appreciate the level of detail you provide. The aesthetic of this line, in particular, sort of appeals to me….but agree, I want to be wowed too. Hope you are well! P.S. loved Angel Violette and have tracked down a full bottle tester 💜
Oh me too! I had Easter off, I visited my mum back in the dark ages with no WiFi... I can't say I love Penhaligon's. The only one that I thought was good so far was Solaris, I'd give that house room.
Well done on Angel Violette. I didn't get to mine yet. I just had a disaster: my laptop died. All my video plans, videos and editing software is gone 🤦♀️ no videos for a few weeks after tomorrow I think 🤦♀️
@@dr.claire.perfume on no Claire that is terrible news! I am so sorry! We will all understand if it takes a few weeks to get back up and going. That’s gotta so frustrating for you! Ugh! 🤬😡🤯
@@jillshorten3457 yeah, it's just sinking in. 🤦♀️
You have very beautiful
dark-blue eyes, I love them 💙💙
Thank you! ☺️
I have a bottle of A Kiss Of Bliss. I absolutely love it
Exactly! It's distinctive and going to be love or hate! I never smelt anything else quite like it. It's the most unusual and stand out of the line. 🥰
I like the range but not owned any yet. Please do a video on black pepper in perfumes
The range definitely has breadth of style and I love that they got different perfumers to formulate each one!
I tried A Balm of Calm and thought it was just OK. I didn't get ANY similarity to Jazz Club however 😂 despite a shared rum note. The bottles are very cool and the names and theme cool.
Yes the bottles are fab! I don't know whether it's because I very recently reviewed Jazz Club for another video, but Balm of Calm made me immediately think of it, even more so than Gris Charnel. 🤷♀️ Thanks for watching 🥰
Good one!
I bought the sample set too, then ordered my bottle of Eau the Audacity.
(🙋♀️ I am one of those locked out of Babycat at least until I get overseas again… or Selfridges online restocks & I’m lucky). Incense-vanilla is not my idea of springtime so I’m getting in a few wears before things heat up.
I liked A Kiss of Bliss, Liquid Love & A Balm of Calm next best & they’re still under consideration. Maybe at a lower price point I would’ve felt more enthusiastic! 🤷♀️
Vra Vra Vroom didn’t work for me at all either. 🙅♀️
1 Yes, 3 Maybes & 1 No. And the tiny bottles have enough to test drive further. Not bad for a sample set!
That's a pretty good hit rate! Do any other Penhaligon's fragrances work for you? I do think they have made a good range here. Even as much as I don't love Kiss of Bliss, I see that it is distinctive and interesting.
I have no idea what YSL are up to but they are really losing out with their stock issues...
Thanks for watching 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume True, YSL is throwing away money at this point! 🤷♀️ I run hot & cold on the three “maybe” Penhaligon’s - like it, next time don’t….We’ll see. The Potions & Remedies bottles are adorable as is the idea of the line. I’m new to the brand & I’ve only quickie-sniffed a few other bottles as I rushed through a store. Plan to check out more next time. I just recall wanting to test Halfeti; without spraying on skin or even a strip it’s not fair to judge, but my initial thought was “meh”.
I had a discovery set with Halfeti in and for me, it was the best of the 5 but it's a DNA that has been done over and over. Luna was much more distinctive. My friend Jon loves that one. I think my own favourite so far has been Solaris. Good luck in your Penhaligon's investigations. They are a pricey brand so it's worth making sure that you truly love it before investing. You are right! 🥰
Hi Claire! Penhaligons is not sold in Canada anymore, unfortunately. I wish I owned at least one of their fragrances. Xo!
That's a shame! It seems like many brands are hard to come by in Canada nowadays. 🥰
I'm in Canada. Scent split is in the states but I order 2 ml samples from them. They have Penhaligons there.
@@patriciat5323 good to know to help others, thanks!
I get really annoyed with brands that only offer 100 ml bottles. I have a lot of perfumes, more than I could ever go through. It’s rare for me to go through a 50 ml bottle, there’s no reason for me to buy a 100 ml unless it’s something I am utterly obsessed with. Which ironically that is the case with Missing Person and Phlur does not even offer large bottles. Haha, oh the irony…
Yes! I totally agree! If you have a collection of fragrances, you don't need or tend to want 100ml... It is money sitting on a shelf. They should sell 30ml at least, or travels like with some of the rest of their collection. Thanks for watching 🥰
the cartoons always remind me of Monty Python lol I did buy a discovery set and there were nice ones but nothing that compelled me to by a full bottle.
Yes same! I was putting the images in for this video and thought it's exactly the same style! 🥰
I am wishing that one day you'll be able to curate your own creation collection & collaborate with your favorite Perfumers & so we can sniff "your visions of preferred scent".
You are scientist therefore u have a different take or ways.
I think I just like realism with a twist. And something with a smooth feel. I'd love something silky and cool feeling. I also like twist around gourmands, e.g. dark by Akro to me is really interesting, similarly Cacao Porcelana. They have gourmand elements but aren't overly sweet.I would also love something with lime or lime blossom and purple florals. And perhaps a white floral leather or suede 🥰
The Victorian advertisement cartoons, they were sooo pretty !
They are nice aren't they?! 🥰
Wait what what... They are how much 😱
😱 yep! Don't look, it's lots... And no smaller sizes 🤷♀️
@@dr.claire.perfume 🤣 Well cos who wouldn't want an endless supply of them
Err 👀
I got vra vra vroom last Oct. because of its brightness almost like champagne-ish, osmanthus ginger ale. The sweetness i got is like honeyish.
Yes! I think if you enjoy apricotty osmanthus it's a great choice ☺️ champagne is a fab description 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume maybe.
Or maybe it reminded me from a good memory i can't recall. I just realized upon collecting scents that i tend to like citruses' blossoms or flowers ( hybrid of sweet citrus + floral accord).
Actually when my boyfriend & i test the collection, he was the first who appreciated vravravroom & upon testing, i start to appreciate it. Not my favorite but this is d first scent in my collection with prominent osmanthus magnolia. Eau de Audacity was my first choice but i got this.
I think Eau the Audacity is a good smokey vanilla. It's probably the most universally appealing of the collection. I would be interested to see which was their biggest seller, I would bet it is Eau the Audacity.
The creamy apricot curd thing with vra vra vroom was really lovely! It's the one I would describe as the prettiest of the collection. 🥰
Hey there,
Just a quick note, I think the perfumer's name is Dominic Ropion, not Ropinion. Also, I have to agree, the line didn't exactly blow me away either.
I really enjoy your videos! Your honest reviews and unique content always keep me coming back for more. Keep up the great work!
P.S. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Etat Libre d'Orange range!
Oh sorry, I love Dominique Ropion's fragrances in general so I'm sorry I said it wrong. I filmed this at midnight and really was struggling to get my words out in general as I was tired. 😂 It probably took me three times as long to do because of that, but I've had very limited time to film lately sadly. 🤦♀️
Yeah this line is absolutely fine but it's mostly fragrances that are a well trodden path.
I've tried you or someone like you and enjoyed it. I will look into getting more samples as I'd love to try more ☺️ thanks for watching 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume No worries, happens to the best of us! I'm always mixing up names too. I figured since you're a fellow fan of his work (like me), you'd appreciate the heads up.
I absolutely adore your videos! The effort and research you pour into them really shines through.
As for Etat Libre d'Orange, they're a bit hit or miss for me, but I dig how avant-garde and unique their line is.
@@laurajl7039 Thank you ❤️
This is it isn't it?! You don't expect to love everything, but some loves and some hates are much more interesting than a sea of meh 😂 Love and hate is really how brands hook me in, it keeps me interested and trying things to try to find more loves ☺️
Happy Easter 🐣 have a fab weekend 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume Happy Easter, Claire 🐰 🐣!
Thank you 😊
I’ve always been fascinated with the line but the prices scare me!
They aren't cheap are they?! I think they are worth sniffing if you can sample at low cost. 🥰
I only own Malabah by Penhaligon.🥰 It’s contains notes of tea, cardamom, ginger, amber, rose, musk, and sandalwood.
Sounds really like something I'd enjoy ☺️ I did try lots in store a few weeks back but too many so I can't remember which was which 😂 I will go back and try it 🥰
@dr.claire.perfume. Sorry. As far as I know, they no longer sell it. However, I have seen it on eBay.
@@lu_re7198 aah ok! I did go in to my local store on Friday and didn't see it... So that would explain it! 🥰
🎉🎉🎉
🥰
I have something in my collection with saffron? I think it’s a dossier and that does not work for me 🥴
Saffron is a tricky note isn't it? It's not too bad with Eau the audacity at all. ☺️
I thought Penhaligon is British cause it still looks very British. Then you have 2-3 big houses Floris, Creed Aventus and Roja Dave. I wonder if there a fragrance smells like a Earl Gray tea :). Since you cannot tolerate iso e super, ambroxan and cashmeran, the number of fragrances you could truly enjoy will be somewhat limited.
Yes it does look British! Of course it doesn't matter at all, I really like the quirky imagery they use, it's fun 😊
I've not tried any Roja as yet, I own a Floris and I have just bought a Creed discovery set to try them properly, I have tried a few in store and not got along with many, so we'll see!
And yes, the big one that I really struggle with is iso E super. I can smell it when it's with other things but not on its own 🤣 it's weird! Ambrox is a strange thing too, I absolutely love some very heavy ambrox fragrances and others I really don't enjoy, I can only imagine there are perhaps different types?
I can‘t find the discovery set on the Penhaligon‘s webpage accessible in EU :(
That's rubbish isn't it? I did try changing the website to EU to see if it was visible, but the website took me back to UK settings with £ currency 🤷♀️ I hope if you want to try these, you can find samples through a distributor, perhaps Sephora might carry them?
@@dr.claire.perfume Regrettably, I have never seen Penhaligon perfumes in local Sephora either. But I‘ll keep looking.
Good luck 🍀
Never tried any from this brand. They seem too expensive 😮
Yes they are. I think they are somewhat overpriced! 🥰
A Balm of Calm is for men.
I think the collection is unisex marketed but I guess it's personal choice. Thanks for watching 🥰
Hi claire My love, you are cuter with your hair down, you look gorgeous, I love you my dear.
Thanks for watching 🥰
A Kiss of Bliss is so great on paper, that's where it ends. So gross on skin.
It wasn't for me either 🤣 unusual though! Thanks for watching 🥰
Less real ingredients, more synthetic ingredients to save money and the prices go up, more lines being released, yep they've been purchased by money grabbers.
I only paid more attention to Penhaligon's quite late in the day I think, when they'd already been purchased by Puig, but I do remember trying some samples in the late 2000s and enjoying them. The newer ranges haven't had any loves for me other than Solaris, I'd recommend that one at least. I do consider this range to be incredibly overpriced. And I think them not having any choice other than the 100ml bottles isn't on! Thanks for watching 🥰
So disappointed, really loved the vintage British feel to it and it’s not real…
Well it was a British brand until 2015, I'm sure it maintains that heritage still. It does still feel British and it still has the warrant. Thanks for watching 🥰
I haven't tried any Penhaligon so far, I think. You'd think such an historical British house would be easy to find in Canada, but no. And they're pricy so I'm not blindbuying...
That's crazy! Canada is a huge market for fragrance! You'd think Penhaligon's would have a distributor there... I'd say Solaris is the only one I've felt like there was a possibility of me wanting to buy so far and I've tried a few now 😊
@dr.claire.perfume Well some big online stores sometimes have a few fragrances but they're full bottles... I don't want to risk blindbuying bottles that expensive! 🫤
No! I completely understand that! My blind buy limit is relatively low. I don't like the risk either. 🤷♀️
