@billhatcher9303 as far as i know, it was customary at that time for the choir to stand in front of the orchesta. this apparently ensures that the choir can be heard much more clearly and is not ‘swallowed up’ by the orchesta.

This piece was not written for the „Corno da Tirarsi“. only for „Corno“ in A. it has No(Zero) notes not otherwise used in Bachs other works for Corno, or Corno da Caccia. (Like the Brandenburg concerto, Christmas oratorium, Quoniam etc.)

Wonderful, thank you. Looking at the audience it seems there are not many listeners younger than 60 or so. This saddens me a bit. I'm sure if more people listened to Bach the world would be a better place. On the other hand, in orchestras like this there is a fair percentage of (relatively) young people, and that is something to be grateful for.

Apart from the tirarsi I can tell you why. This recording was outdated when it was published.
In the year 2000 Andrew Parrott published a marvelous book called "The Essential Bach Choir", in this book he is proving that worked at max with 8 singers. Unfortunately most germans and Swiss musicians still don't follow his results which were groundbreaking.

comments about the age of the audience and possible inauthenticity of the performance practice are wide of the mark. These performances take place when younger people are at work, sometimes spread over more than one day if something needs to be repeated (others have commented on the disappearance/reappearance of daylight, even changes in clothing of the performers). It is not surprising that only retired people are available to listen. This does not excuse the absence of younger listeners from public concerts of classical music, at least in Western Europe (it is a different matter in the Far East). What IS heartening about the audience response to these and analogous performances is thay they are listened to avidly in countries where classical music scarcely exists, least of all that of Bach. There is hope.
An INTELLIGENT comment on performance practice here will generally draw an informed response from Kapellmeister Lutz.

It should be a "corno ca tirarsi" - only Bach wrote for this instrument. No original or technical drawing has survived, so the "reconstruction" depends on the instrument maker. Indeed BWV 136 is written for "corno", not "corno da tirarsi". I believe in a failed transfer, like BWV 105 (wich is also unplayable for any kind of baroque corno) it looks more like a typical "cornetto"-part. The ambitus / range fits exactly and any Stadtpfeiffer (=musicans / trumpeter in Leipzig) had to know how to play the cornetto too.

There were slide trumpets which predate valved ones. Like a trombone you can get every note on one partial or the other. The long trumpets you see in some of these performances were limited to certain notes and three were multiple models to play in different keys.

    • @matthirt7863

I believe this is the elusive "corno da tirarsi" ("slide horn"), an instrument only ever asked for by name by J. S. Bach (and only during his Leipzig period). Very little is known about this instrument which was extensively researched by Olivier Picon (who plays it here) and reconstructed by Rainer Egger with Picon and others. It is assumed this instrument was played by famed Stadtpfeifer Gottfried Reiche (Bach's principal trumpeter during his first 11 years in Leipzig) and also used on a significant number of cantatas asking for a "corno" with parts which are not playable on a natural horn. After Reiche's death, Bach never wrote parts for this instrument again which makes it plausible it was a specialty instrument only Reiche could play at a high level. The reconstructed instrument used here bears a striking resemblance to the (albeit slide-less) "trumpet horn" Reiche holds in the famous Haussman portrait.

    • @andrewhale337
      @andrewhale337 Месяц назад

This instrument was designed by the player, an experiment to demonstrate the elusive „Corno da Tirarsi“ ((Slide trumpet, or Thurmerhorn) What is elusive to me is why he plays this piece, written for CORNO IN A, on this instrument!! (the piece contains no notes otherwise asked for by Bach on other works of his for the Corno da Caccia like his Quoniam from the b-minor mass!)
      Nice playing though!

It is the mysterious corno da tirarsi (literally "slide horn") that appears in several of Bach's cantatas in slower passages for chorus. It was capable of playing non-harmonic notes prior to the development of hand-stopping technique in 1745 or valves in 1815. Although we do not know the exact configuration of Bach's corno da tirarsi, a brass instrument maker from Basel, Switzerland, Rainer Egger of the firm A. Egger developed this instrument as one possible solution several years ago utilizing the corpus of a jaegertrompete ("hunter's trumpet) modeled after the Haas trumpet in Elias Gottlob Haussman's famous 1727 portrait of Gottfried Reiche, one of the most famous of 18th century trumpeters, who played for Bach in Leipzig, and attached to a modern double slide mechanism. Is it truly Bach's instrument? No one knows for sure.

What is that Frankenstein's monster of a contraption being used for the part marked in the score as 'corno'? Handstopping may not be authentic, and fingerholes are probably modern inventions, but from the imagination of whom has this slide horn been dreamed up?

    • @simonhunt1805

      Found this: www.bachkantaten.ch/Daten10/10/x.Corno.da.Tirarsi/Picon.2010.Corno.da.Tirarsi.pdf
Yes a slide horn did exist and is connected with Gottfried Reich whose protrait appears with a a coiled trumpet, presumably the model for the Dizzy Gillespie slide horn used in this recording (and played brilliantly by the way). While the final chorale melody score for 'corno' could not be played on a natural horn, the first movement could and should be played on a natural horn. Bit of a cheat I think.

Corno da tirarsi? Ernsthaft?

Music great and touchy with a phantastic interpretation. BUT: THE UGLY AND DISTURBING ADVERTISMENTS ARE REALLY NOT THE PLACE: THROW THEM IN THE TRASH CAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
