Marc, You are so right, in my case I was about 12 years old and ensured I stood close as possible to our school grand piano during Morning School Assembly as our science teacher Mr Morris, a gifted musician would each day play different pieces by Bach and other composers as we filed into the School hall every morning. I remember being particularly captivated by ‘Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring’ and I began to recognise and learn individual pieces. I looked forward to hearing him play, it became an obsession and I could feel the notes of the school’s Bluthner Grand piano resonate around me. This was particularly so when the lid was raised. I’d watch the action hammers and dampers lift and fall as he played. The pupils were never allowed to actually touch the piano, it was regarded as a special item of school equipment and was always kept under a heavy padded cover when not in use. My reverence for instrument was duly recognised by Mr Morris and I became school Monitor with responsibility for removing the cover before School Assemblies and replacing it after the service. In time I was allowed to actually play the piano and learned to play several favourite pieces by Bach and Beethoven strictly under his supervision. It was the first piano I had the pleasure of learning to play and did so for many hours over the years after school had finished. It sounded wonderful in the large school hall. 65 years ago I was given the score of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata by another teacher and still have it in my collection today.
