- This is a fairly scratched up looking 78 I own of the 1942 Arthur Fields version of "Der Fuehrer's Face". I'm not sure how much of a rarity this version is and I'd love to know more about it, so if anyone has information, please share here. Recorded from my Audio-Technica PL120 direct drive professional turntable, fed straight into my Mac. I used Audacity for the audio and iMovie for the video. Enjoy!
Arthur Fields was a baritone singer who was popular during World War I and into the 20's. His real name was Abraham Finkelstein, from New York. As a songwriter, he wrote the words for "Abba Dabba Honeymoon." He retired from recording shortly after this disc was made. He lived his later years in a Florida nursing home, where he perished in a fire in 1953.
I thought for a while that I might be the only one who had a copy of this...now I find out there are four more...and mine is a re-issue (on Varsity!) But it is a classic piece of history and thanks for putting it up!
thank you for sharing it with me
Glad to share! I couldn't resist when I saw it. I mean, 10 cents? :)
even scratched up this version is more fun than modern 4K video with Spike Jones voice and altered lyrics - shame Disney never made blu ray of the cartoon with proper sound from master archive tapes

Maybe someday they will.
Recorded in July 1942, and originally issued on HIT 7023; this is the Varsity reissue.
This song was composed for the Donald duck short ´´Der Fuehrer's face``, but was published before the short came out.
Great rendition.
I've got this recording on HIT label, among Fields' final commercial recordings.
Just finished listening to a news report from “Democracy Now !” about a reclusive Billionaires named “Cordelia Scave May” whose funding a Modern Day Eugenic’s Movement. So frustrating that what ol “Arthur Fields, Spike Jones, & Walt Disney” were all trying to make fun of and rip to shreds is still lurking about like the Big Bad Wolf in an old Disney or Warner Cartoon !
Wonderful!
I have this on Hit as well, such fun history!
Thanks for sharing this!!
Glad to share.
I love this version!!!
*Donald duck led me here.*
Interesting; this is a very late Fields recording - his heyday was in the 1920's. I wonder if he still had a hit with this?

Apparently, the Oct 31 1942 Billboard issue says Fields himself denied even making the record, and the singer here is imitating Fields if anything...
The links might be blocked, but the Billboard article was easily found
Dis ist My favorite cover
are you using a 78 stylus?
No, I only have a few 78s so it didn't really make sense to buy a special cartridge for them. It could sound better, I'm sure, with a 78 specific cartridge.
New version to me.
What's the line after "Hirohito is our friend," and what or whom was it referring to? I had a little trouble making it out.
Michael Palmieri he says ''and Laval he is our friend'' who was the Prime Minister of fascist France
@@brandonsabattis6878
I see. Thanks for the info.
No petein is the fascist french leader
@@milesal-ramahi452 the marchel was head of state laval was council president. prime Minister after admiral darlan was turned, and murdered
It refering to Axis leaders but funny that they consider emperor Hirohito as Aryan friend
spike jones is the one used for the Donald Duck one
This version of "Der Fuhrer's Face" has some of the same lyrics used in Spike Jones' take on it (as well as the one heard in the Walt Disney cartoon of the same name), but it also contains different lyrics, like the lines referring to Mussolini and Hirohito, the ones about getting "more meat," and the part about how "Der Fuhrer" (Hitler) "could be wrong" about the war not lasting too long.
I'm part German
Good for you
